New Gene Therapy Partially Restores Sight to Blind Man
Researchers inserted genes that code for light-sensitive proteins in seaweed into the man’s retina(视网膜), and now he reports limited but much improved vision. Researchers say they 1 (restore)limited vision in a blind man using a new type of gene therapy. The study, published this week in the journal Nature Medicine, used a gene for light—detecting proteins taken from a type of seaweed 2 (rebuild)nerve cells in the man’s eye. “Seeing for the first time that it did work, 3 only in one patient and in one eye is exciting,“ Ehud Isacoff, a neuroscientist at the University of California tells Carl Zimmer of the New York Times.
The man’s restored vision can’t be described as full vision, as he still can’t see colours or pick out faces or letters. But 4 the 58-year-old man who suffers from a genetic disease called retinitis pigmentosa(色素性视网膜炎), could only barely detect light before the procedure, he can now perceive and count objects. The study presents the first instance of the new technique, called optogenetics, successfully 5 (use)to treat a human patient.
To partially restore the man’s sight, researchers inserted the gene that codes for light-sensitive proteins 6 (find)in seaweed and bacteria into the cells at the back of one of his eyes. With the genetic instructions for making opsins(视蛋白)inserted into his eye, these new opsins in the man’s eye send electrical signals to his brain 7 they are exposed to light and subsequently change shape. The catch is that these opsins only respond to amber coloured light, which is 8 the special glasses were necessary. Getting this system to work also required some seven months of training the volunteer’s brain to recognize and make sense of the new signals it was getting. This practice involved wearing the glasses at home and on walks. 9 the seven-month mark, the man, who lives in France, excitedly realized he could see the white stripes of a crosswalk.
Botond Roska, a neuroscientist and gene therapist, holds the belief 10 their technique is not a cure for blindness: ”For now, all we can say is that there is one patient with a functional difference.” Still, he believes this clinical result is “a milestone on the road to even better outcomes”.

六、书面表达
My mom only had one eye. I didn’t know why and she never told me what had happened to her. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment.
She ran a small shop at a flea market (跳蚤市场) and collected old clothes and some other things to sell for the money we needed. Once during elementary school, it was a field day, and my mom came. I was so embarrassed and wondered how she could do this to me. I threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school, my schoolmates asked me, “Your mom only has one eye?!” and they laughed at me.
I was so angry with my mom and wished that she would just disappear from my world. So I said to my mom, “If you’re only going to make me a joke, why don’t you just stay far away from me?” My mom did not respond. I felt a little bad, but at the same time, I felt so good to have said what I wanted to say. Maybe it was because my mom hadn’t punished me, I didn’t think that I had hurt her feelings very badly.
For the words I had said to her earlier, there was something pinching (掐) at me in the corner of my heart. Even so, I hated my one-eyed mom and our terrible poverty (贫困). I told myself that I would become successful in the near future, so I studied very hard. Later, I got accepted by Seoul University. I left my mom and went to Seoul to study.
Then I got married there. I bought a house of my own. Then I had kids, too. I was living happily as a successful man. I enjoyed the life in Seoul because it was a place that didn’t remind me of my mom and my past. This kind of happiness was getting bigger and bigger until one day someone knocked at my door.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】
Dear Sir/Madam,
I’ve heard that our school is going to make minor adjustments to the fourth course given on Thursday afternoon. So I’m writing to state my recommendation for the course on subject expansion.
The reason why I’m in favour of subject expansion is a combination of factors. To start with, it’s essential for us to figure out what we’re going to do in the near future. Subject expansion enables students to get to know more about specific subjects, allowing us to find our true interests and potential career paths. What’s more, despite the fact that art appreciation courses are really great, they can’t possibly benefit everyone because some students prefer to play basketball rather than watch some artistic works. However, things aren’t the same when it comes to subject expansion, where everyone can choose whatever they want to take part in. It literally benefits every student. Therefore, I believe subject expansion will be a wiser choice.
As far as I’m concerned, subject expansion must include multiple subjects, ranging from history to PE, in order to meet students’ needs. At the same time, what teachers teach in subject expansion should be related to the majors and occupations associated with this subject and, most importantly, the satisfaction one could gain from studying this subject, so that students can have a clearer understanding of their interests and make more sensible choices about the careers they might take.
In a nutshell, I genuinely believe that subject expansion will become a huge success. Hopefully you can take my suggestions into your consideration!
Yours,
Zhang Hua

【答案】
It was my mom still with her one eye! It felt as if the whole sky was falling apart on me. My little girl ran away, scared of my mom’s eye. I screamed at her and said that I didn’t know her, asking how she dared to come to my house and scare my daughter. In response to this, my mom quietly answered, “Oh, I’m so sorry.” She said she might have gotten the wrong address, and she disappeared out of sight.
I felt relieved (如释重负) about my mom’s leaving, but days later, a letter about her lost eye turned my world upside down. The secret was out: my mom gave me her eye when I was young, as mine was lost in an accident. Overwhelming (压倒性的) shame crushed me. I broke down. Tears blurred my sight. She saw my whole world with one eye, while I, with two, was blind to her love. Her one eye, once a shame, now glowed like stars. I must find her to beg for forgiveness, and finally told her, “Mom, I love you.”
