Huang is a shooter from Zhejiang. At the 19th Asian Games, she competed in the 10 m air rifle (步枪) women’s individual (个人), team and mixed team events. (24-25九年级上·四川资阳·期末)阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到答题卡相应的位置上。请注意词数要求。
China is such a big country. Are the north and the south very different?
I think the biggest difference between the north and the south is the language. Each place in China has its dialect (方言). Luckily, China has done a good job in teaching people putonghua. It is reported that the Putonghua popularity rate (率) has increased from 70 percent to 80 percent in the past ten years. How amazing it is that so many people can speak one language!
Besides, I think the food is quite different. I grew up in Tianjin, which is famous for baozi and jianbing. In 2012, my parents took me to travel in Hunan. I was surprised by the rice there. It was not as sweet or glutinous (黏的) as that in the north. This is because of the difference in water and soil conditions.
You can find some differences in traditional Chinese poems. China’s poet Su Shi once wrote about the West Lake in Hangzhou: “The brimming waves delight the eye on sunny days; The dimming hills present a rare view in rainy haze. (水光潋滟晴方好,山色空蒙雨亦奇。)” Hangzhou is warm and wet, with beautiful lake scenery. But if you read poems about the north, the scenes are quite different..
1.What’s the biggest difference between the north and the south in China? (No more than 1 word)
2.How has the Putonghua popularity rate changed in the past ten years? (No more than 9 words)
3.Where did the author grow up? (No more than 2 words)
4.Why is the rice in the south different from that in the north? (No more than 11 words)
5.Who once wrote a poem about the West Lake? (No more than 2 words)

Listening shows others that they are important. It’s a sign of respect. If someone listens to you carefully when you are talking, it shows that they are really interested in what you are saying.
How do you practice listening? Here are some suggestions:
Turn off your computer or your smart phone. Your computer or your smart phone will distract you from your listening.
Face the person you are speaking with. Facing the person you are speaking with will help you focus completely on listening. It will also make the person feel that you find what he is saying important.
Mind your body language. Leaning towards the speaker will show interest. Crossing your arms in front of your chest shows disagreement. Looking around the room shows you have no interest. Looking at that speaker in the eye tells him that he is important.
Listen completely. Do not start making comments (评论) after the first few words. Do not start thinking about your reply in your mind. Pay attention to the speaker. Really listen to what he is telling you.

Passage 2
(23-24九年级上·四川成都·期末)
Creative ideas are bringing nature into city areas all around the world. Here are some cities that have found ways to let the plants in, which is good for their populations and the environment.
Liverpool
A living wall is how the city of Liverpool has made room for nature in its busy city center. Without planting space, it turned the concrete (混凝土的) surface of the St. John’s Shopping Center into a 65-meter living wall. It is perfectly located to help take in some of the pollution produced by the nearby bus station.
In 2021, two beehives (蜂箱) were put on the rooftop of the shopping center, each housing 20,000 bees. The bees don’t just pollinate (授粉) on the living wall. They are active within a five-kilometer-wide circle around their hives, helping the environment of the wider community.
Singapore
Singapore plans to be “a city of nature.” In February 2021, the city announced (宣告) its “Green Plan 2030.” It’s a program to make the city as environmentally friendly as possible. Singapore already has over 400 parks and 4 nature protected areas. It has also promised to plant a million trees across the country and further increase parkland by 50 percent. The hope is that by 2030, no family will be more than a ten-minute walk from a green space.
New York City
The High Line on the West side of Manhattan is a two-kilometer long public park. It is built along the remains of a railway line. The railway line closed in the early 1980s. It faced being pulled down before people wanted to put the place to good use. In 2003, people decided to make it an above-street level garden. It is now a city greenway with over 150, 000 flowers and trees.
The projects from all over the world show just how possible it is to include nature into city. Some of the projects are big, while others have a far more localized influence—but all are inspirational ways to give the whole planet a helping hand.

Food waste is common in many schools. Students at Whitewater Middle School in the US once found 200 pounds (90.7 kg) of food had been thrown away after just one of their school’s daily meals. They said it was both unpleasant and educational.
A student said, “You don’t realize how much food waste you’re making till you see it.” To deal with this problem, Whitewater has added environmental science as a new school program this year. Teachers will lead students to do research about how food connects with the environment, poverty (贫穷) and people’s health.
Whitewater teachers make sure students know how their own eating habits are part of bigger problems. In environmental literature ( 文 学 ) classes, students read books such as Fast Food Nation: The Dark Side of the All-American Meal.
Teacher Lyman says that in language arts classes, students discuss why poor people often have less healthy food. Lyman says she wants students to ask themselves some basic questions: “What do we eat? What do we waste?

Torbjorn Pedersen is a Danish traveler who recently finished a trip around the world. But this wasn’t just any trip. Mr. Pedersen spent nearly 10 years visiting every country in the world.
Mr. Pedersen started his journey “saga” in Copenhagen, Denmark on October 10th, 2013. He made a few rules for his trip: no flying, no visiting home, and spending at least 24 hours in every country. He hoped that he could live on about $20 a day, and finish his trip in about four years.
Mr. Pedersen had many difficult experiences. He was once held at gunpoint (枪口) and thought he might die. But he also had many good experiences. Mr. Pedersen says that one reason he didn’t give up was the courage he got from people all over the world. “You might have to try 1,000 closed doors,” he says, “but there is always an open door somewhere. Never give up.”
Finally, last year, on July 26th, Mr. Pedersen arrived back in Denmark after a 33-day boat ride. About 150 people, including friends and family members, waited for him.
Mr. Pedersen says he’s looking forward to some quiet time to think about his trip. After that, he plans to write a book and share what he learned in his trip around the world.

Acupuncture, an ancient Chinese medical practice, has treated countless patients for thousands of years.
Acupuncture can date back over 2500 years. Before modern medicine came to life, ancient Chinese mainly used stone tools, the earliest form of acupuncture, to treat people when they felt the pain in their body. Over time, this practice developed into an important part of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM).
Acupuncture is a treatment that is to strengthen the body’s ability to regulate (调节) itself. As we all know, TCM gives a special importance to treating the whole body, balancing bodily functions, and improving general health and happiness. According to the rules of TCM, there are a lot of meridians (经脉) in the human body, where the qi, or life energy, moves around the body to meet the needs of the organs like hearts and stomachs. Cold or illness can result in the blocking (阻塞) of the energy, and so stimulating the specific points called acupoints can unblock qi and improve health.
Practices can be different in forms, including needle insertion, cupping and so on. Needle insertion, the most common method, is carried out by inserting hair-thin needles into needle insertion meridians, or acupoints on the body that carry the qi. Doctors use the needles to bring back the balance of yin and yang and improve the body’s natural abilities.
Looking beyond China, acupuncture has become a worldwide treatment. Over the years, acupuncture is widely used in many countries and has been modern medical practices. According to a 2023 WHO report, acupuncture is used in 113 of its 120 member countries. It is supported by ongoing scientific research. From this ancient Chinese medical practice with a rich history and deep cultural meaning, we can see a rich culture of China.

A giant panda is a kind of bear. It has a white face with black patches (块) around the eyes. It also has black ears, shoulders and legs. The rest of its body is white.
Pandas always choose bamboo forests as their homes. They live high up in the mountains of Southwest China, such as Ya’an and Pingwu in Sichuan Province.
How about their food? Pandas in the wild usually eat bamboo. In zoos, their menu includes bamboo, apples and carrots. A giant panda can eat as much as 30 kilos of bamboo a day. They need to eat a lot to stay healthy, so they spend more than 12 hours a day eating.
Sadly, giant pandas face serious problems in the wild. Losing homes is the most worrying, because some people are cutting down bamboo forests. Besides, it’s very difficult for pandas to have babies, and many baby pandas die when they are very young.
So we should take action right away. Here are some ideas. First, help pandas have more babies. Second, build more panda reserves (保护区). Third, make laws to protect pandas.

Have you ever been in a spot where you’re chatting with someone and suddenly run out of things to say? It feels awkward, right? Well, you’re not alone. Here are some simple tips to help you keep a conversation alive and avoid those silent moments!
First, if your conversation is dying, you can continue a conversation by going back to an earlier topic. You can say, “Earlier, you said _________. Tell me more about that.” This shows you’re listening and care about the chat.
Second, add details when you talk. If someone asks about your holiday, don’t just say, “It was good.” Share a bit more, like, “It was good! I saw my family after a long time and we caught up.” This makes the chat more interesting and gives them more to ask about. Just remember, nobody likes to listen to someone who is only talking about themselves. Share a little, then let the other person share too. This keeps the chat fun for both of you.
Third, ask open-ended questions that need more than a yes or no answer. Use questions starting with who, what, when, why, where, or how. Like, “What did you do this summer?” This is not easy to end a conversation.
Lastly, show you’re interested and use good body language. Use friendly body language. Don’t cross your arms, make eye contact, and smile. Focus on the person you’re talking to. This makes them feel important and keeps the conversation flowing.
So, next time you’re talking to someone and fear the chat might stop, try these tips. They can help you keep the conversation interesting and avoid awkward silence!
1 to Keep a Chat Going
2 to an earlier topic.
This shows you’re listening and care about the chat.
Give some details.
This makes the listeners more 3 in the chat and gives them more to ask about.

Sugar painting is a traditional folk art that is very popular in Chengdu, China. You can often see folk artists making sugar paintings along the streets or in parks. Many people are fascinated by these paintings, and the artists are also well-loved by the public.
According to some studies, sugar painting began during the Ming Dynasty. People used sugar paintings to show respect to the gods. They would create animals or characters out of sugar and offer them as gifts to the gods. In the Qing Dynasty, sugar painting became even more popular. The skills of making sugar paintings improved, and the designs became more varied (多变的). Many of the patterns represented good luck, such as fish and dragons.
Sugar painting is very different from regular painting. First, because the sugar is hot and can harden quickly when it cools down, the artist must work very fast. Second, the artist has to carefully follow specific steps and draw continuous lines to form pictures of animals or other objects. To master sugar painting, the artist first practices regular painting to get familiar with the technique. Over time, the style of sugar paintings has evolved. Artists now use tools like bronze spoons and shovels, and instead of paper, they use marble slabs.

The UNESCO added “Spring Festival, social practices of the Chinese people in celebration of the traditional New Year” to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity (人类非物质文化遗产代表作名录) on December 4, 2024. The Spring Festival, also called the Chinese New Year, is the most important festival in China. It is a time for welcome the new year and spending time with family and friends. However, not all Chinese celebrate it in the same way. Some ethnic groups (少数民族) have their own traditions for this special festival.
During the Spring Festival, Zhuang people have some interesting customs. On the day of the Spring Festival, they always get up early. They believe sleeping in will make crops (庄稼) grow slowly. On that day, Zhuang people also race to get the first bucket (桶) of water from the river. They think it could bring good luck to their family for the whole year.
Over half of the Miao people live in Guizhou. They have their own New Year’s Day. There is no exact fixed date for the Miao New Year. It is often celebrated after the rice harvest and lasts for 3 to 15 days. During that time, Miao people wear traditional clothes and play the lusheng.

Do you enjoy traveling around? If you want to travel from New York to Beijing, the flight (航班) will take you more than 13 hours. Luckily enough, in the future, the journey might take only two hours.
At present, a company (公司) is developing something called ET3, which stands for the “Evacuated Tube Transport (真空管运输) Technology”. How does it work? The tube is only a few meters wide and capsules (密闭舱) move through it. Each capsule can hold up to six people. For international travel, the capsules can reach speeds of about 6,500 kilometers per hour.
Then you might wonder, “How is it possible for these capsules to travel at such high speeds?” Because there isn’t any air inside the tube. Moreover, each capsule weighs only 183 kilograms.
There are also other good sides of ET3. Since it runs on electricity, it is quite clean. Besides, it is much quieter than airplanes or cars. Lastly, the ET3 system, including the tube and capsules, doesn’t require a large number of building materials.
Of course, the ET3 system still has a really long way to go. On the one hand, people have to spend too much money building and operating (运行) it. On the other hand, great technological improvements are still required to make sure of the normal operation of ET3.

Many people think of pets as members of their family. When traveling for work or vacation, they often want to bring their pets along. In the past, pets had to travel in the cargo hold, a space below where the people sit. Recently, more airlines allow small pets like cats and dogs to travel with their owners in the cabin (客舱), as long as the pets are in cages. However, some people may feel uncomfortable around pets. So, should pets be allowed to fly on planes?
Yes—They Bring Joy
Pets can get stressed in the cargo hold, away from their owners. It’s also stressful for owners to leave their pets behind. Allowing pets in the cabin is good because they don’t take up much space, and owners can care for them during the flight. This also saves money since owners won’t need to use a kennel (狗窝). Pets can also make passengers and flight staff happy.
No—People Should Come First
Airplanes are not designed for pets. The noise on the plane may make pets uneasy. If an owner opens the carrier, the pet could escape and cause trouble. Also, some passengers may be afraid of pets, so it’s difficult to make them share the space with animals.

As winter comes, hands can easily get cold. Thick gloves might be a good choice, but sometimes wearing them is inconvenient. However, this was not a problem for ancient Chinese people, who had a fine tool to warm their hands: hand warmers.
There is one folk story about its invention. Emperor Yang from the Sui Dynasty visited Jiangsu in winter. Because of the cold, a local official asked craftsmen(艺人) to make a small warmer for the emperor that could be held in his hands. So, the hand warmer was created.
By the Song Dynasty, the warmers had become popular among the common people. Skills for producing the tool were widely used in the Ming and Qing Dynasties. Many poets from this period kept a record of people using hand warmers.
In the early days, copper(铜) was generally used in the production process. It was more suitable than silver, iron and porcelain because it could transfer (传导) heat better, while reducing the risk of breakage or corrosion (锈蚀).
Inside a hand warmer, there were coals, some of which were mixed with flowers, giving off a nice smell when burned.
Ancient hand warmers had different designs. Round, square and octagonal shapes were typical, and there were also some fashioned shapes which looked like pumpkins, flowers and turtle shells. The patterns on the warmers would usually be animals or symbols with good meanings, such as deer, flowers or the Chinese characters for long.

【答案】1.Language. 2.It has increased from 70 percent to 80 percent. 3.Tianjin. 4.This is because of the difference in water and soil conditions. 5.Su Shi.
【导语】本文讲述了中国南北方的差异。
1.根据“I think the biggest difference between the north and the south is the language.”可知,语言是南北方最大的差异。故答案为Language。
2.根据“It is reported that the Putonghua popularity rate (率) has increased from 70 percent to 80 percent in the past ten years.”可知,普通话受欢迎率从70%上升到了80%。故答案为It has increased from 70 percent to 80 percent.
3.根据“I grew up in Tianjin,”可知,作者在天津长大。故答案为Tianjin.
4.根据“I was surprised by the rice there. It was not as sweet or glutinous (黏的) as that in the north. This is because of the difference in water and soil conditions.”可知,是因为水和土壤不同才导致南北方大米不同。故答案为This is because of the difference in water and soil conditions.
5.根据“China’s poet Su Shi once wrote about the West Lake in Hangzhou:”可知,是苏轼写关于西湖的诗。故答案为Su Shi.

“A wise old owl sat in an oak. The more he saw, the less he spoke. The less he spoke, the more he heard. Why aren’t we like that wise old bird?” Edward H. Richards.
