B As wildfires spread across Los Angeles, the J. Paul Getty Museum proved its strong disaster readiness. With fire within six feet of the Getty Villa on January 7, the museum’s strong protective measures became a great example of strength to hold on. The Getty Museum’s workers took turns working day and night and checked the hilltops surrounding both the Getty Villa and the Getty Center. The older Getty Villa, home to thousands of old and valuable objects, is located in the Pacific Palisades, while the Getty Center in Brentwood houses famous artworks like Vincent van Gogh’s Irises. Carrying with fire extinguishers (灭火器), the workers checked the grounds for fire, carefully protecting the museum’s valuable collections. The museum’s survival against the fires was unusual among the deadly damage that killed dozens and destroyed thousands of homes. With $9.1 billion and years of experience in fighting wildfires, the Getty had used millions in ways to stop fires, like fire-resistant (防火的) architecture. When the fire endangered the Getty Villa, President Katherine Fleming watched anxiously from the Getty Center’s command station, tracking the fire’s progress. The villa, built with walls and roofs that don’t burn easily, remained unharmed though the fire was very close. The same was true for its priceless collection of 40,000 valuable objects. Meanwhile, the Getty Center’s architecture, designed by Richard Meier with keeping safe in fire in mind, features 1.2 million square feet of stone and open spaces to stop fire from spreading. The museum’s complex irrigation (灌溉) system was started quickly, wetting the grounds and further protecting the treasures. In the case of Getty, planning ahead protected its treasures. Such preparedness — from fire-resistant designs to quick-response systems — sets a model. In the future, as more disasters driven by the climate emergency must happen, the attention of normal people is important: public awareness and support for such protective measures will become increasingly important. 4. What is the main idea of paragraph 2? A. Locations of the Getty Museum sites. B. Valuable collections at the Getty Villa. C. Daily training and duties of the museum. D. Fire prevention efforts by museum workers. 5. Why did the Getty Villa survive the fire? A. It was far from the fire area. B. Its structure resisted fire well. C. All artworks were taken away. D. Workers put out the fire quickly. 6. What does the author want to imply in the last paragraph? A. Climate change is a big danger now. B. The Getty’s success is hard to copy. C. Museums should avoid dangerous areas. D. Early planning helps deal with disasters. 7. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Getty’s Preparation Beats Wildfires. B. LA Fires Destroy Museums. C. Van Gogh’s Art Saves Getty. D. Cheap Designs Stop Fires. C In one high school biology class, almost four in every 10 low-income students would fail the course. But with some simple practices to reduce test anxiety (焦虑), researchers cut that number in half. Christopher Rozek is a psychologist at Stanford University. He studies how stress and other things can affect learning. Reducing test anxiety had raised test scores in several small studies, so Rozek and his team decided to test it on a larger scale. Rozek’s group wanted to know if short stress-relief (缓解压力) activities before an exam would affect a student’s grade. They tested 1,175 biology students at a large, public high school in Illinois. At this school, a little more than half of low-income students fail their biology finals. Only 6 percent of high-income students fail. They divided the students into four groups. One group spent 10 minutes free-writing about their fears. This was designed to clear the kids’ heads so that they could then focus on the exam. Another group read how the body responds to stress and how these can actually help with attention. Then they answered reading comprehension questions. Students in a third group did both of these reading and writing activities. A fourth group, called the active control group, read a passage that told them to just ignore (忽视) their worries. Afterward, the students all took their final test in biology. A total of 205 low-income students did one or both stress-relieving activities. On average, these students scored higher on the exam than their classmates in the control group. Indeed, 82 percent of them passed the class. Only 61 percent of the lower-income students in the control group passed. Whether a student read or free-wrote about managing stress, or both, seemed negligible. All methods worked equally well at helping students pass their tests. Nearly all the high-income kids passed the class whether they did the activities or not. These students may be less nervous before exams. Or they may have already learned ways to deal with the stress, Rozek says. 8. Why did Rozek’s team do the study? A. To make biology tests simpler. B. To stop students’ fear of exams. C. To test stress relief on a bigger group. D. To develop new teaching methods for biology. 9. What did the third group of students do? A. Forget their exam worries. B. Only wrote about their fears. C. Read and wrote about stress. D. Just answered reading questions. 10. What does the underlined word “negligible” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Insignificant. B. Incorrect. C. Indirect. D. Informal. 11. What can we infer about high-income students? A. They had no test anxiety at all. B. They need more stress-relief help. C. They disliked the stress-relief tasks. D. They are less affected by test anxiety. D Many of us start exercising in the hope of losing unwanted pounds. Unquestionably, aiming to be more active is a good thing. But if the main reason is to lose weight, your decision could very well come to nothing. For starters, exercise is typically a poor strategy for weight loss that may disappoint them. Take walking for example. A 150-pound person who walks for 30 minutes will burn, on average, around 140 calories. That’s equal to one can of soda — not exactly a great return on your hard work of time and effort. It’s much easier just to skip the soda. When exercise is added to a diet, the results are equally unimpressive. Researchers found that a combination of dieting and exercising produced no greater weight loss than dieting alone after six months. At 12 months, the diet-and-exercise combination showed an advance, but it was slight — about 4 pounds on average. In studies where exercise has produced meaningful weight loss, participants burned at least 400 to 500 calories per workout on five or more days a week. To achieve that, a 150-pound person would need to walk a minimum of 90 minutes or run 30 minutes per day. In short, these workouts need to go well beyond what most of us are willing or able to do. And even if we manage to make that much effort, our bodies often compensate (弥补) by increasing desire for food and slowing down metabolism (新陈代谢), which over time limits how many pounds we lose. When exercise fails to meet our weight-loss expectations, we often stop working out. Perhaps the biggest problem with exercising to drop pounds is that it turns physical activity into punishment — a price we have to pay for a slimmer body. How many times have you heard someone say “I’ll need to do extra exercise” after eating too much? We treat exercise as a form of self-punishment for being “bad”. In this case, we’re unlikely to keep doing it for very long. The conclusion is that we’re more likely to treat exercise positively and actually do it when we focus on our well-being rather than our weight. 12. What does the author think of exercise for weight loss? A. Strange. B. Useless. C. High-risk. D. Popular. 13. What can we learn about the combination of dieting and exercising? A. It’s much less effective than dieting alone. B. It’s much more useful within six months. C. It shows little advantage after six months. D. It has impressive advance after a year. 14. Why does the body’s compensation mechanism affect weight loss? A. It increases people’s hunger and slows down metabolism. B. It takes people shorter time to burn more calories. C. It helps people to do more exercise to lose weight. D. It makes people pay more attention to their well-being. 15. What is the author’s recommended approach to exercise? A. Use exercise as a warning. B. Focus on health rather than weight. C. Avoid exercise when you’re upset. D. Combine proper exercise with diet. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Lessons that are Learned from the Olympics The Olympic Games are enjoyed by everyone all over the world. ___16___ But we just watch the Game? After class, I told my mother everything, almost crying. My mom smiled, patted my shoulder, and comforted me until I felt better. She looked into my eyes and said, “Don’t worry, dear. They just don’t know you well. Show them your best side. When they see how good you are, they will want to be your friend.” At that time, I didn’t fully believe her, but she was right. I’m writing to invite you to our school’s fun sports meet! It will be held on December 5th on the school playground. Unlike regular sports meets, there are various interesting games like three-legged races, tug-of-war and balloon-popping relays. They’re more about fun and teamwork than competition. It’ll be a great chance to have fun, bond with classmates and experience campus life. Would you like to join us? I’m sure we’ll have a wonderful time! I’m looking forward to your reply. Yours sincerely, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】 After a week, the big day of the speech contest finally arrived. My hands trembled as I stepped onto the stage, but I took a deep breath and began speaking. To my surprise, my voice sounded clear and confident. As I shared my thoughts, I noticed my classmates listening intently. Their encouraging smiles gave me strength, and I finished my speech with a flourish. The applause that followed was overwhelming, and I felt a warmth spread through my chest. How excited I was! As I went off the stage, I heard someone call my name. Turning around, I saw a group of classmates waving at me. “You were amazing!” one of them said, while another added, “We had no idea you were so good!” Their genuine admiration made me smile. From that day on, they started including me in their activities, and I no longer felt alone. We shared joy with each other. My mother’s words had come true — showing my best side had finally helped me find my place.
