Instructional Design Title: Why do we celebrate festivals? (Unit1 festivals and celebrations reading and thinking) Course type Reading and Thinking Text type Expository text Teaching grade Senior high school Teaching duration 45mins Analysis of teaching notion Modern English teaching follows the idea of student-oriented teaching and emphasizes the cultivation of students' creativity. Students should discover, analyze and solve the problems on their own. Students' actual performance should be taken into consideration. Therefore, I design tasks of different forms with varying degrees of difficulty. Students are encouraged to participate in the activities with their creative ability being improved. Besides, the ideological and political education is implanted into classroom teaching, so as to strengthen students' awareness of the importance of festivals and recognizing the common spirit. Analysis of teaching materials What: This article is selected from unit1 Festivals and Celebrations of English Textbook for senior high school students published by PEP. It’s crucially designed for strengthening students’ awareness of festivals. Why: This article intends to enhance students’ cultural awareness so that they would voluntarily cherish our traditional festival and respect others. More importantly, by learning this article, students’ cultural confidence can be cultivated. How: This article introduces common spirit from different festivals by putting forward one typical examples which are designed for explaining the author’s idea and enhancing cultural awareness. Analysis of target students Students are from senior high school. On the one hand, Some students have good English foundation and high enthusiasm for learning, while others weak English foundation and limited vocabulary. On the other hand, Most of them are able to obtain direct information through reading though their ability is relatively weak to express themselves correctly and smoothly in English. They are active in voicing their opinions. Besides, it should be noted that some of them are unfamiliar with most festivals. Teaching objectives Through learning the text, students will be able: 1. To understand and introduce the reason, traditions and expectations of festivals in their own words. (Language ability) 2. To develop a critical thinking to understand the importance of festival and learn to exchange cultures. (Thinking quality) 3. To apply some basic reading skills such as skimming and scanning to analyze and locate some information about festivals. (Learning ability) 4. To strengthen awareness of cultural confidence in Chinese festivals. (Cultural awareness) Teaching key and difficult points Teaching key points: 1. To help students identify and summarize the structure of the passage 2. To aid students learn the mind map of the introductory material 3. To cultivate students’ cultural confidence in Chinese festivals Teaching difficult points: 1. To instruct students extract useful information and classify them 2. Individual work Step 2 While-reading (35 mins) · Global-reading 1. Students read the passage quickly and find out the correct answer to answer the title. To help students have a clear understanding of the aim and structure of the text. Individual work 2. Students skim the text and divide the text into parts and conclude the main idea of each part. To train students’ reading ability of skimming and generalization of the main idea. Individual work · Detailed-reading 1. Students complete the blank form to summarize the information about festivals. To train students’ reading ability of scanning and help them understand the the theme. Individual work 2. Students answer questions about harvest festival by scanning To help students better understand different festivals among different countries and learn to sort out information. Individual work 3. Students answer questions about the changes of festivals by scanning To help students recognize the change of festivals with time going by and lead in following context. Individual work 4. Students answer questions about commercialization of festivals by scanning To aid students to realize the commercialization of festivals and develop a critical thinking. Individual work 3. Students make a conclusion of this part which includes the author’s attitude and the theme. To aid students to deepen understanding of the main idea and apply learning methods for their future study. Individual work Step 3 Post-reading (5mins) 1. Using given sentence patterns, draw your own festival of given material. To guide students to apply what we learn into real life Group work 2. introduce your work for the class from four aspects: name, time, custom, purpose. To help students strengthen awareness of cultural confidence. Group work Step 4 Homework (1min) Homework: Write a short passage and express your opinion on the “taste” of Spring Festival. To instruct students to consolidate the knowledge learned in the class Individual work Blackboard design Teaching reflection 1. After learning this lesson, students will be able to understand the main content of this text and the basic knowledge of festivals as well. 2. They may show great interest in learning this lesson, realizing the necessity and importance of festivals. 3. Teaching goals are basically achieved, except that their reading speed needs to be further improved in future studies. 4. In all, after learning this class, students have clear ideas of the importance of festivals and have great enthusiasm and creativity on festivals and celebrations.
