Modern English teaching follows the idea of student-oriented teaching and emphasizes the cultivation of students' creativity. Students should discover, analyze and solve the problems on their own. Students' actual performance should be taken into consideration. Therefore, I design tasks of different forms with varying degrees of difficulty. Students are encouraged to participate in the activities with their creative ability being improved. Besides, the ideological and political education is implanted into classroom teaching, so as to strengthen students' awareness of the importance of festivals and recognizing the common spirit.
Analysis of teaching materials
What: This article is selected from unit1 Festivals and Celebrations of English Textbook for senior high school students published by PEP. It’s crucially designed for strengthening students’ awareness of festivals.
Why: This article intends to enhance students’ cultural awareness so that they would voluntarily cherish our traditional festival and respect others. More importantly, by learning this article, students’ cultural confidence can be cultivated.
How: This article introduces common spirit from different festivals by putting forward one typical examples which are designed for explaining the author’s idea and enhancing cultural awareness.
Analysis of target students
Students are from senior high school. On the one hand, Some students have good English foundation and high enthusiasm for learning, while others weak English foundation and limited vocabulary. On the other hand, Most of them are able to obtain direct information through reading though their ability is relatively weak to express themselves correctly and smoothly in English. They are active in voicing their opinions. Besides, it should be noted that some of them are unfamiliar with most festivals.
Teaching objectives
Through learning the text, students will be able:
1. To understand and introduce the reason, traditions and expectations of festivals in their own words. (Language ability)
2. To develop a critical thinking to understand the importance of festival and learn to exchange cultures. (Thinking quality)
3. To apply some basic reading skills such as skimming and scanning to analyze and locate some information about festivals. (Learning ability)
4. To strengthen awareness of cultural confidence in Chinese festivals. (Cultural awareness)
