If we need to select a key expression for recent years, “weight management” could be the most popular one. Designed to encourage healthy living habits among staff workers, a “million-yuan weight loss” activity started by Shenzhen-based technology company Insta360 has attracted public attention. The company is offering all employees who register 500 yuan in cash for every half kilogram they lose.
This year, a post-2000s employee surnamed Xie signed up for the activity and lost 20 kilograms in just 90 days, earning 20,000 yuan in cash and winning the title of “weight-loss champion.” Xie said that during the competition she strictly controlled her diet and exercised for an hour and a half every day, finally achieving an amazing change.
When asked how she stayed determined and whether she had considered giving up, she smiled and said, “I think now is the best time in my life to become the best I can be — not just for beauty, but also for health.” She also shared actor Qin Hao’s weight-loss method in the company group chat to encourage colleagues caught in a stop with their weight loss.
Since the event began, the company’s “million-yuan weight loss” challenge has been held for seven rounds, awarding about 2 million yuan in total prizes. Over the past year, 99 employees have taken part, losing a total of 950 kilograms and sharing 1 million yuan in cash rewards. “We hope the ‘million-yuan weight loss’ challenge promotes healthy living and encourages employees to pay more attention to their health outside of work. It’s also a way to inspire everyone to face work and life with a positive attitude,” the event organizer said.
The challenge also includes a “betting” rule — participants who regain weight must pay 800 yuan for each half kilogram gained. So far, no one has regained weight and been penalized, Nanfang Daily reported.
24. What is the purpose of the “million-yuan weight loss” campaign?
A. To make Insta360 famous.
B. To share useful tips of weight-loss.
C. To encourage the staff to earn more money.
D. To help the employees develop healthy living habits.
25. Which of the following can be inferred about the employee Xie?
A. She cared more about beauty. B. She kept going without giving up.
C. She shared her method with no one. D. She was the first one to win the title.
26. How much weight have the employees taking part lost on average over the past year?
A. Nearly 7 kg. B. Around 8.5 kg. C. About 9.6 kg. D. Over 10 kg.
27. What does the underlined word “penalized” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Admired. B. Punished. C. Cheated. D. Honored.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. C 27. B

South Africa is attracting more Chinese tourists with its unique travel experiences. Visitors can track lions and leopards from an open safari vehicle see whales jump out of the ocean, and watch cute penguins walk along the beach. “It’s exciting to see these wild animals. For years, people have wondered where potatoes come from. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery. They found that an ancient genetic (基因的) mix about 9 million years ago created the potato, which is now the world’s third-largest food crop. Amazingly, the tomato has been discovered as the “mother” of the potato.
The study was done by a research team from the Agricultural Genomics Institute in Shenzhen. They worked with a researcher from Lanzhou University and scientists from Canada and the U.K.
Their findings show that the potato came from an ancient mix between a tomato plant and a potato-like species about 9 million years ago. This gene mixing also led to the development of a new part: the tuber (块茎). Published in the top journal Cell, these findings offer a new idea for the genetic breeding of potatoes.
Potatoes, the world’s most important tuber crop, are native to South America. Because they are healthy and can grow in many different conditions, they have spread worldwide.
Huang Sanwen, the study’s lead author, explained that the origin of potatoes had long been a scientific mystery. To solve this mystery, the research team studied the genes of 101 different potatoes and 349 more samples from farmed potatoes and 56 wild potato species. This was like doing a huge DNA test for all potatoes. They discovered that all potatoes examined carried stable, balanced mix of genes from both Etuberosum (a wild potato-like plant) and the tomato plant. This led them to conclude that potatoes are the mixed “children” of these two species.
To confirm this idea, the team figured out when the three species separated. Their results showed that Etuberosum and tomato started to separate around 14 million years ago. Then, 5 million years later, they mixed together. This event led to the earliest potato plants that could grow tubers around 9 million years ago.
32. What led to the creation of the potato?
A. An ancient natural gene mixing. B. Human agricultural activities.
C. The change of growing conditions. D. Its worldwide spread as a crop.
33. What do we know about the tuber?
A. It makes the potato healthy. B. It is the largest part of the plant.
C. It existed in tomato plants long ago. D. It appeared after a certain gene mixing.
34. What does paragraph 5 mainly talk about?
A. A huge DNA test on potatoes. B. The two parent plants of potatoes.
C. The number of potatoes used in the study. D. The process of solving a scientific mystery.
35. Where can you probably find the text?
A. In a novel. B. In a history book.
C. In a science magazine. D. In a tourist brochure.

【36题详解】
前文提到“Teens need about 9 to 11 hours of sleep to be their healthiest and do their best in school.(青少年需要9-11小时睡眠以保持健康和学业良好。)”,后文讲“That can have a bad effect on everything from your ability to concentrate in class to your mood around your family and friends. (这可能会对你在课堂上集中注意力的能力和你在家人和朋友身边的情绪产生不好的影响。)”。空格处需体现“需求与现实的矛盾”,用转折词衔接。选项C“However, most teens aren’t getting enough sleep.(然而,多数青少年睡眠不足。)”中However表转折,既呼应前文“睡眠需求”,又解释了后文“不良影响”的原因。故选C。
【37题详解】
空处为本段小标题,概括整段内容。本段核心为“When you go to bed around the same time every night, your body gets used to the schedule and you fall asleep more easily. (当你每天晚上在同一时间上床睡觉时,你身体会习惯这个时间表,你会更容易入睡。)”,强调“规律就寝时间”。选项B“Set a regular bedtime(设定规律的就寝时间)”与其他小标题对称且精准概括段落核心。故选B。
【38题详解】
前文提到“Divide the hour into three 20-minute parts. Start with 20 minutes to prepare for the next day (you can pack your backpack and lay out your clothes). This helps you go to bed with a calm mindset and saves you time in the morning. Then set aside 20 minutes for personal care. (把一个小时分成三个20分钟的时间段。从20分钟开始为第二天做准备(你可以打包你的背包和准备你的衣服)。这有助于你以平静的心态上床睡觉,节省你早上的时间。然后留出20分钟做个人护理。)”,空格处需衔接“最后20分钟”的安排。选项G“For the last 20 minutes, do something relaxing to help you fall asleep.(最后20分钟,做些放松的事以助入睡。)”中the last 20 minutes承接前文的时间顺序。故选G。

(你的新睡眠习惯可能需要两周或更长时间才能发挥作用。)”可知,空格处需给出对应解决建议。选项F“So wake at your usual time, and you will stay well rested all week.(按平时时间起床,确保一周休息良好。)”是针对前面两句问题的合理建议。故选F。
【40题详解】

After I had pictured it over and over again in my mind, the big day finally arrived: my first day at senior high! I woke up early and rushed out of the door in my eagerness to get to know my new school. On the way, the morning breeze brushing my cheeks like a friendly hello, I kept wondering what my new teachers would be like — maybe strict but kind, or funny and easy to talk to?
The campus was still quiet when I arrived, so I decided to explore a bit. Anxious and excited, I told myself, “Lee, you will have a good beginning.” Some birds singing, I walked past the gym and stopped to look at the noticeboard. I was looking at the photos on the noticeboard when I heard a voice behind me. “New here?” Turning around suddenly, I crashed straight into someone. Then I heard the sound of a cup hitting the ground, and immediately saw the spilled coffee. Looking up, my face burning, I saw a handsome and young man with brown hair. His clean white shirt now had a dark brown mark, and it was spreading across his chest. “Oh, no!” I yelped. All the excitement about the new day disappeared, replaced by panic (惊慌)。
He quickly pulled out a tissue to wipe up the coffee stain on the floor. “It’s all right,” he said, “accidents happen.” I froze there, forgetting to help, “I... I am terribly sorry. I was just wondering what life is going to be like here.” “Don’t worry,” he gave me a smile. “You’ll soon find out.” He picked up the pieces of the cup and said goodbye to me.
How true his words were! When my head teacher stepped into the classroom, I was surprised to see the same handsome man I had met earlier.
“Good morning, everyone. Before we start, please come to the front one by one and introduce yourself to the class. I’ll go first. My family name is Brown....” Hearing his words, my heart began to beat wildly.

【答案】参考范文
I tried to turn on my brain but the engine just wouldn’t start. I should say my name, of course. But what else? What could I say to make a good first impression to erase the memory of that coffee stain? I was organizing my words in my head when my turn came. With butterflies in my stomach, I dragged my feet to the front. Glancing at Mr Brown’s encouraging smile, I cleared my throat, “Hello, I’m Lee. This morning, I accidentally spilled coffee on our head teacher. Sorry again, Mr Brown.” Instead of a proper self-introduction, I blurted out an apology.
My words made everyone laugh and all eyes turned to Mr Brown’s white shirt. To my surprise, Mr Brown chuckled along with the class. “The coffee stain,” he said, his eyes twinkling, “has become our class’s first shared memory.” His response immediately eased my tension. He continued by comparing the accident to our learning journey, suggesting that sometimes the most imperfect beginning makes the best story, and that we should embrace such unexpected moments in senior high.

South Africa is attracting more Chinese tourists with its unique travel experiences. Visitors can track lions and leopards from an open safari vehicle, see whales jump out of the ocean, and watch cute penguins walk along the beach. “It’s exciting to see these wild animals. I escaped the busy city life and felt the power of life,” said Wu Qian, a Beijing office worker, who recently visited the country.

To attract more Chinese tourists, South Africa started the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme in February to make visa applications easier and faster. A total of 47 Chinese travel agencies have joined the program. They can apply for visas online and get them within 24 hours. This is one of South Africa’s strategies to welcome more Chinese visitors, along with adding more flights.

She believes that the growth of Chinese tourists will help the South African tourism industry recover. According to her, special services are available for high-end tourists, family travelers, and study tour groups. Beyond famous attractions like wildlife reserves and Table Mountain, South Africa also offers rich food culture and historical heritage.
South Africa is also attracting Chinese tourists through Chinese social media platforms by inviting Chinese famous people, influencers and South Africans living in China to create content.
