“Look how stupid he is!” A 7-year-old said to her dad Daniel Funke, pointing to a picture of a famous person on the Internet. The photo showed the man signing his name—with his pen turned upside down.
Of course, the photo was not the original one. It had been changed to look like him using the pen the wrong way. Funke quickly pointed out the mistake, and his daughter got an on-the-spot education in fake (假的) news. By then, however, many people had already shared it on social media.
“The pitfalls of sharing misinformation and fake news can be very serious,” says Laeeq Khan, who heads the Social Media Analytics Lab at Ohio University in Athens. Sharing something that’s not true can cost people their lives, he notes. Last year, people in India used a messaging app, WhatsApp, to spread fake stories about a kidnapping ring(绑架团伙). The lies caused violent attacks in which people died.
Fake news stories hurt people in other ways, too. For example, fake reports lead some parents to refuse vaccines(疫苗) for their children. Yet without vaccines, children can get deadly diseases.
Fake news can even hurt people who aren’t its target(目标). “About seven in ten Americans were telling us that fake news has a big influence on the confidence in our government,” says Jeffrey Gottfried. He’s a journalism and media-research expert at Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C.. Researchers there did a survey in the United States about the influence of made-up news. About half the people in the survey said they had shared misinformation online. Most of them said they didn’t realize it at the time.
Besides causing serious results, sharing a fake story makes it harder for people to tell what’s real. And when people find out a story is not real, they may not trust other information from a person who spread it. Therefore, it’s important to do fact-checking before sharing news stories.
34. What is the purpose of the first two paragraphs?
A. To bring up the topic of the text.
B. To tell an interesting news story.
C. To provide the main idea of the text.
D. To list people’s popular online behavior.
35. What does the underlined word “pitfalls” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Mistakes. B. Problems. C. Advantages. D. Possibilities
36. What will probably be discussed if the text is continued?
A. The ways to check whether a news story is real.
B. What people should do when they discover fake news.
C. What makes it hard for people to spot misinformation.
D. The reasons why we should think twice before sharing news.
37. What does the text mainly talk about?
A. The causes of fake news. B. The bad effects of fake news.
C. The person of making fake news. D. The process of making fake news.

Ants are good navigators (导航员). They often travel long distances to search for food and carry it back to their nests. But how do they do it?
An international team of scientists, including researchers at the University of Edinburgh, UK, has recently come up with an explanation According to the findings, ants use visual (视觉的) memories of their environments and the sun’s position to find their way home. And they can even do it while traveling backwards.
The researchers studied a group of desert ants in Seville, Spain. The study’s purpose was to find out how ants navigate when they carry pieces of food of different sizes.
To make it work, the scientists first trained the ants to follow a particular path back home, including a challenging 90-degree turn. Then the ants were given either a small or a large piece of food to test their navigational skills.
Ants with small pieces of food walked forward and cleared the 90-degree turn just fine. However, those with larger pieces sometimes had to turn backwards to drag them. Generally, these ants would set of in the correct direction. But if they stayed too long in the backward position, they would miss the correct turn to reach the nest. Interestingly, not ail of the backward-walking ants were that stubborn. Some would drop the food occasionally (偶尔) to check their surroundings. So after turning back to pick up their food, the ants would find themselves back on the nest.
Researchers believe the ants were taking advantage of a mix of different information to navigate backwards. This may include local landmarks (地标), the position of the sun, and their position in the environment. To prove this, they used a mirror to make it look like the sun was on the other side of the sky. In that case, the backward ants would turn toward the opposite direction.
Barbara Webb, a professor from the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics, said the findings could help people make smarter robots in future.
“Understanding their behavior gives us new insights into brain function and has inspired us to build robot systems that mimic (模仿) their functions,” she told the BBC.
Scientists have been able to copy the neural (神经的) network in the ant’s brain. The hope is to invent robots that can explore by themselves in natural areas such as forests.
38. According to the new study ants ________.
A. mainly depend on local landmarks to guide them home
B. cannot navigate well when they are carrying food with them
C. prefer to travel in groups to avoid being lost on long-distance journeys
D. use the sun’s position and visual memories of their surroundings to navigate
39. What can be concluded about the ants in the study?
A. They were motivated by food to follow a particular path.
B. They were sure to lose their way when making.
C. They could not find the correct way back once lost.
D. They sometimes got lost if they traveled backwards for too long.
40. What is the article mainly about?
A. How scientists test ants’ navigational skills.
B. The link between ants’ traveling habits and brain functions.
C. Ants’ navigational skills and their possible application.
D. Different ways ants carry food pieces of various sizes.
41. What inspiration does the researchers get from their findings?
A. Robots can be used to explore the forest.
B. Ants’ neural network can be moved into robots.
C. Findings help understand humans’ brain function better.
D. People can make cleverer robots imitating ants’ brain functions
D
A group of graduates, well established in their careers, were talking at a reunion and decided to visit their old university professor, now retired. During their visit, the conversation turned to complaints about stress in their work and lives.
Offering his guests hot chocolate, the professor went into the kitchen and returned with a large pot of hot chocolate and other things including cups-porcelain (瓷杯子), glass, crystal (水晶杯), some plain looking, some expensive, some elegant — telling them to help themselves to the hot chocolate.
When they all had a cup of hot chocolate in hand, the professor said: “I notice that all the nice looking and expensive cups were taken, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. The cup that you’re drinking from adds nothing to the quality of the hot chocolate. In most cases it is just more expensive, and in some cases even hides what we drink. What all of you really wanted was hot chocolate, not the cup; but you consciously went for the best cups… And then you began eyeing each other’s cups. Now consider this: Life is the hot chocolate; your job, money and position in society are the cups. They are just tools to hold and contain life. The cup you have does not define, nor change the quality of life you have. Sometimes, by concentrating only on the cup, we fail to enjoy the hot chocolate we have. The happiest people don’t have the best of everything. They just make the best of everything that they have. Live simply. Love generously. Care deeply. Speak kindly. Thanks for your blessings in 2024. And enjoy your hot chocolate in 2025!”
42. When did they decide to go to see their professor?
A. After the reunion. B. Before they graduated.
C. During the get-together. D. Just after the professor retired.
43. Why did the professor offer them different cups?
A. Because cups were not enough for everyone.
B. Because cups were beautiful.
C. Because hot chocolate should be contained in different cups.
D. Because the professor wanted to teach them something.
44. What caused the professor to say those words?
A. Their complaints. B. Their reunion. C. Their visit. D. Their graduation.
45. What is the purpose of the professor’s words?
A. To tell them life is not easy, so try their best to be happy.
B. To educate them that the happiest people don’t have the best of everything.
C. To use different cups to tell them they should try different things in life.
D. To wish them to be grateful for their life and make the best of everything that they have.
第Ⅱ卷
五、阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
Years ago, I took a class on writing for children. In this class, the students turned in a manuscript every week. One week I wrote a story that I really liked. It was about a small boy who was constant(经常地)in trouble. At this point, I made a mistake beginning writers often make. I fell in love with my first draft. I typed it up, and sent the manuscript out to five publishers.
For some reason, the teacher decided to read this story in class. At first, I thought she'd chosen the story because it was so good. But the teacher stopped after the first paragraph and pointed out the problems. The characters were flat, and the plot wasn't logical(合逻辑的). She couldn't find one good thing to say. I wanted to hide myself. How could I have been stupid enough to think the story was good? After that, I dropped out of the class.
As the weeks went by, one by one, all the manuscripts came back. Only one copy never came back, and I figured it had been lost in the mail. I decided that, based on what my teacher said, the story was a loser. I was not made for writing. A year later, I got a call from the fifth publisher. An editor had read my story and wanted to publish it! I put down the phone and danced around the room. The publisher, Follett, did publish my book, The Grumpus Under the Rug. It has sold more than 40,000 copies.
So who was right? Did the teacher have a point? Well, yes, because the characters were flat. Was the editor who took the story wrong to publish it? Well, no, because, despite its shortcomings, the story did have kid appeal. Stories are like people, and they are imperfect. You have to find a way to believe in yourself, even if others don't. You may think successful writers have some special talent that allows them to avoid all this heartbreak. They don't. They just stick with their own dreams.
46. What does the underlined word probably mean in Paragraph 2? (1 word)
47. What was the author considering doing before getting the editor's call? (no more than 5 words)
48. What did the fifth publisher think of the author's story? (no more than 10 words)
49. Why are some writers successful according to the author? (no more than 10 words)
50. What will you do if you meet with difficulties? Please explain. (no more than 20 words)

B

B. What people should do when they discover fake news.
C. What makes it hard for people to spot misinformation.
D. The reasons why we should think twice before sharing news.
37. What does the text mainly talk about?

The photo showed the man signing his name—with his pen turned upside down.(“你看他多傻呀!”一个7岁的小女孩指着网上一张名人的照片,对爸爸丹尼尔・芬克说道。照片里,这位名人正在签名——但他的笔拿倒了。)”和第二段“Of course, the photo was not the original one. It had been changed to look like him using the pen the wrong way. Funke quickly pointed out the mistake, and his daughter got an on-the-spot education in fake (假的) news. By then, however, many people had already shared it on social media.( 当然,这张照片并非原图。 故选A。
【35题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“Sharing something that’s not true can cost people their lives, he notes.(他指出,传播不实信息可能会危及他人生命。)”可知,分享错误信息和假新闻的问题可能非常严重,由此可知,pitfalls意为“问题”。故选B。

【答案】42. C 43. D 44. A 45. D

【答案】46. Dull/Plain.
47. Planning to give up writing.
48. Although imperfect, it appealed to kids.
49. Because they stick to their dreams.
50. When facing difficulties, I will try to overcome them and never give up, because only by persistence can we succeed.

【46题详解】
考查词义猜测。根据第二段的“The characters were flat, and the plot wasn't logical(合逻辑的). She couldn't find one good thing to say.(角色非常flat,情节也不合乎逻辑,她连一句好话都说不出来)”可知,老师认为作者的文章写得非常不好,由此推知此处是指角色是非常“平淡的”。故填Dull/Plain.
【47题详解】
考查推理判断。根据第三段的“I decided that, based on what my teacher said, the story was a loser. I was not made for writing.(根据老师的说法,我认为这个故事是失败的。我天生不适合写作)”可知,作者认为自己不适合写作。由此推知他准备放弃写作。故填:Planning to give up writing.
【48题详解】
考查推理判断。根据最后一段的“Was the editor who took the story wrong to publish it? Well, no, because, despite its shortcomings, the story did have kid appeal. Stories are like people, and they are imperfect. (是编辑弄错了发表这篇文章吗?不,因为尽管有缺点,这个故事对孩子还是有吸引力的。故事和人一样,都是不完美的) ”可推知,第五位出版商认为作者的文章虽然不完美,但能吸引孩子,因此愿意出版。故填:Although imperfect, it appealed to kids.
【49题详解】
考查推理判断。根据最后一段的“You may think successful writers have some special talent that allows them to avoid all this heartbreak. They don't. They just stick with their own dreams.(你可能会认为成功的作家有一些特殊的才能,让他们避免所有这些心碎。他们没有。他们只是坚持自己的梦想) ”可推知,作者认为一些作家之所以成功是因为他们坚持自己的梦想。故填:Because they stick to their dreams.
【50题详解】

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Jin
【答案】Dear Bob,
I’m sorry to hear you’re feeling distant from Jim. It’s completely normal to miss the closeness you once shared, especially when high school keeps you apart. Change can be tough, but remember, true friendships often evolve rather than fade away.
To bridge the gap, try to communicate more often — whether through quick texts, video calls, or sharing small moments from your day. Open up about your joys and struggles; it’s these shared experiences that keep bonds strong. Offer support when Jim needs it, and be patient if he’s busy adjusting too. Mutual understanding goes a long way.
Wishing you both all the best. Distance may test friendships, but effort and care can keep them thriving. Stay positive, and I’m sure your connection will grow even stronger.
Yours,
Li Jin
