Going against the tendency of flooding to well-known yet crowded tourist attractions on vacation, a growing number of holidaymakers in China are spending their holidays at lesser-known places to look for special and relaxing holiday experiences. “Reverse (反向) tourism” has appeared as a new trend among young holidaymakers in China.
During the public holidays, large numbers of vacationers, especially youth who long to escape their busy city lives, avoid popular holiday tourist attractions in order to get off the beaten track and enjoy some peace and quietness.
According to data from online travel agency Qunar, the number of rooms booked at hotels in less-traveled cities during the holiday was up 30 percent year on year. Bookings for four-and five-star hotels in less-traveled places, including Linxia in Gansu Province and Shizuishan in Ningxia, all increased at least 10 times from the same period of the past year. Even 12.5 percent of youth who normally have little time for themselves simply had a time in a hotel to make the much-awaited holiday more relaxing.
Besides crowds, some vacationers chose less-traveled places to save on the cost of trips to popular attractions, which often includes expensive tickets, meals and hotel stays. What’s more, lesser-known attractions are able to offer more natural experiences, according to social media posts. And unlike popular attractions, some undeveloped places with little online attention can offer more surprises.
Jiang Han, a senior researcher at the Beijing-based public policy think tank Pangoal, said that reverse tourism will become one of the future directions for the market and is an opportunity for growth which can match the camping economy.
4. Why do most young holidaymakers prefer reverse tourism?
A. They don’t like long-distance traveling. B. They care much about the spending.
C. They enjoy a special and peaceful holiday. D. They want to be different from others.
5. Which destination may a reverse tourist choose?
A. A famous place of interest during holidays. B. A popular and impressive vacation.
C. A developed attraction to enjoy themselves. D. A lesser-known place for leisure.
6. How is Paragraph 3 developed?
A. By listing reasons. B. By offering data.
C. By comparing opinions. D. By following time order.
7. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Reverse tourism will become a new trend.
B. The future of reverse tourism is uncertain.
C. Popular tourist spots are facing challenges.
D. Reverse tourism will be more popular than camping.

Driving in busy traffic can be very stressful. Walkers can show up suddenly, cars can pull out of parking spaces without warning, and roads get slippery when it rains or snows. For a human driver, it’s already hard to know when to stop or speed up in these situations — even harder for a driverless car. But some car companies and a few tech firms are trying to convince drivers to let driverless cars take the wheel.
There’s no doubt that the biggest expected benefit of driverless cars is safer driving. Driverless systems will have sensors. These sensors can find safety risks that human drivers might miss. Many car companies already have systems that admonish drivers when their car gets too close to other cars (which is dangerous). Driverless systems also work better in terms of efficiency. They don’t waste as much fuel as human drivers do. And with the help of advanced GPS, they always take the fastest route.
Completely driverless cars won’t be sold for a few more years. But the technology behind them is already being used step by step. Here are two examples: Mercedes-Benz has a feature called “Active Lane Keeping Assist” and Ford has “Traffic Jam Assist”. For Mercedes’ feature — when the car crosses the lane lines, the system makes the steering wheel shake to warn the driver. For Ford’s feature — the system helps the car keep up with other cars, and it stays in its own lane. This system is made to reduce traffic jams on busy roads.
Some car companies say they will make driverless cars in the next ten years. But critics don’t believe this easily. They warn that a completely driverless car must be able to make quick decisions — even in the most complicated traffic situations. Also, the car’s computer needs to be smart enough to know when to ask the driver to take over (to stop an accident from happening).
Governments won’t fully approve driverless cars until they are proven safe. Until then, you can expect car companies to add smarter and smarter features to their new cars.
8. How does the author introduce the topic?
A. By listing driving challenges first. B. By comparing two kinds of drivers.
C. By explaining driverless technology. D. By introducing carmakers’ plans.
9. What does the underlined word “admonish” in the second paragraph mean?
A. Oppose. B. Warn. C. Evaluate. D. Improve.
10. What do the two listed examples indicate in Paragraph 3?
A. Fully driverless cars are nearby. B. Carmakers hesitate to invest.
C. Technology develops bit by bit. D. All driverless issues are fixed.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Driverless Cars: Fully Approved B. Driverless Tech: Advancing with Benefits
C. Robotic Drivers vs. Human Drivers D. The Future of Fully Autonomous Cars

About a decade ago, when you logged into social platforms, you’d likely see posts in order by time. These days, users are hit with a flood of content recommended by an algorithm (算法). “The algorithms monitor the data of all the users and then try to determine what each person is most likely to engage with,” explains New Yorker writer Kyle Chayka.” So, you have this feed that’s constantly trying to anticipate what you’re going to click on.”
In his new book, Filterworld, Chayka explores how algorithmic recommendations shape our culture and behavior. While the Internet has lowered barriers, allowing anyone to publish and be heard without institutional approval, Chayka emphasizes that succeeding in this environment means adapting to algorithmic expectations, often at the cost of originality or depth. It’s not enough to have a unique voice or vision; creators must also consider how well their work fits into an ecosystem that favors quick engagement and broad appeal. He argues that this kind of machine-guided recommendation has flattened our likes and tastes, resulting in a more uniform cultural experience.
Another concern Chayka raises is how this system affects the way we consume culture. He acknowledges that passive consumption has its role — not every interaction with media has to be deeply intellectual. But he worries about the kind of passivity users are being pushed into, where they are unconsciously encouraged not to think too hard about the culture they’re engaging with. Instead of following their own preferences, users are encouraged to stay within the boundaries that the algorithm believes are most clickable. Chayka warns that this dynamic could lead us to abandon great works of art simply because they don’t immediately engage or entertain.
What emerges from Filterworld is not a call to reject technology completely, but a reminder of the subtle ways in which digital systems shape our cultural landscape. Chayka invites readers to reflect on their digital habits and to resist the pressures of algorithmic recommendations. In a world increasingly shaped by machines, preserving the richness and depth of culture may depend on our willingness to make more conscious, less convenient choices.
12. Why are the algorithms widely applied on social platforms?
A. To determine hot topics. B. To predict user preferences.
C. To guarantee the accuracy of data. D. To identify the order of displayed posts.
13. What is Chayka’s attitude towards algorithmic recommendations?
A. Supportive. B. Neutral. C. Critical. D. Indifferent.
14. What is Chayka’s concern about the way we consume culture?
A. People might miss out on appreciating valuable artworks.
B. People might be less engaged with the interaction on media.
C. People might become more critical of the entertaining content.
D. People might lose interest in most clickable content.
15. Where is the passage probably from?
A. A fiction novel. B. A science magazine. C. A news report. D. A research paper.

After an exhausting day, Jack strolled down the street, laughing as he thought about his students. Jack was an honorable and thoughtful teacher, and his pupils also took good care of him.
All of a sudden, a familiar figure appeared in Jack’s eyes. It was Mark, his high school teacher. Excited, Jack stepped forward and said warmly, “Hello, Mark.” Taking out his presbyopic glasses (老花镜), Mark looked at the enthusiastic youth in front of him. After a short hesitation, he said, “Sorry? Have we seen each other before?”
Without any disappointment, Jack introduced himself in delight, “I’m sorry, Mark. I’m Jack Smith, from Class 2, Grade 8, graduating from Kenton Junior High School in 2001. Now I am a teacher.” Mark was confused but happy at the same time, and he started to ask a bunch of questions. “Why can’t I remember you? Are you a teacher now?” Despite his limited vision, Mark had an excellent memory to recall nearly all his students.
“Actually, you were in charge of our class for only one day, and there was an accident on that day. I was able to become a teacher thanks to your inspiration.”
The old Mark, curious, kept raising questions such as when they met, how he had inspired Jack to be a teacher, and so on.
“One day, a friend of mine came in with a nice new watch. I was so crazy about it that I decided to take it and I did. After a short while, my friend found it missing and immediately reported it to the teacher, you, who happened to be in charge of our class for that day because our teacher was ill.”
A mixture of emotions flashed in Jack’s eyes on recalling the shameful history. That day, Mark came and told the whole class that someone in the class could not find his watch and whoever took it, please return it.

【答案】Dear Jim,
Knowing that you’re interested in students’ voluntary labour, I’m writing to share something about it.
Aimed to promote the all-round development of the students, a labor practice took place on Guangming Farm last month. Each student took an active part in the activities, teaming up to have all the tasks finished efficiently. Throughout the three days, we gained a lot.
The practice left a deep impression on us. Not only did it enrich our school life, but it further developed our love for work.
Best wishes.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】范文
Jack was too frightened to hand it in. His fingers twisted against his shirt, and his eyes were glued to the floor as his cheeks burned red. The stolen watch, heavy in his pocket, felt like a hot stone burning his skin. He’d replayed the moment a hundred times — sneaking it from the desk, heart pounding, yet unable to resist its shiny face. Now, he could no longer bear the bitter shame and struggled to decide to tell the truth to his teacher in the office after class, afraid the mistake would erase all the teacher’s trust.
Instead of punishing him, Mark praised gently. “Although you took the watch, I am delighted that you are still brave enough to hand it in. Every child deserves a chance to correct his or her mistakes,” he said, placing a warm hand on Jack’s shoulder. He didn’t ask for the watch, just smiled. That night, Jack slipped it back, leaving a note of apology. Years later, as Jack stood in his own classroom, he remembered that smile — why he chose to guide, not scold, when his students made mistakes.
