Besides, students from Calhoun, Pike, Greene, and Jersey counties receive a 10% reduction on tuition.(学生可以选择任意数量和时间段来上课。 B。 B Jim Fullan is often mistaken as a player’s dad. Sometimes people even think he’s a coach. But the 57-year-old man is actually just part of the team. His return to the baseball field has been a long time coming. Fullan retired (退休) last year to reach his goal of playing college baseball. “I never took the opportunity to play in college or continue to try,” he says. “It was always on my mind.” Fullan applied to several Pennsylvania community colleges to get his degree and spoke to a couple of baseball coaches to learn about the programs. But they refused him. It wasn’t until he went to a few of the Montgomery County Community College Mustangs’ games last spring that he felt he found support. He introduced himself to the coaches and they accepted the idea of him becoming a special student and an athlete. Fullan showed up for the tryout last fall. The tryout made him anxious, particularly because he didn’t know how he was going to be received by his much younger teammates. There is truly a big age gap (差距). But he immediately caught the attention of the young who admired his determination (决心). With 25 players trying out, only 18 made the cut. That total included Fullan. When not attending class, Fullan is putting in work on the field. He’s not using age as an excuse. He attends all of the daily three-hour practices from Monday to Friday. Fullan says it is a daily challenge to keep up with his younger teammates so he has to get to practice early before they arrive. Actually, Fullan is able to pass along his wealth of knowledge from decades of life experience to his teammates. This enables him to develop good relationships with the team. His story has been an inspiration to many away from the baseball field, including Kelly Dunbar, director of athletics at Montgomery County Community College. “I admire his courage to keep his dream alive,” she says, “because many people don’t do that these days.” 4. What can be learned about Fullan from the first two paragraphs? A. He hoped to re-experience college life. B. He tried to achieve a long-standing dream. C. He coached young players after retirement. D. He surprised others with his athletic abilities. 5. What made Fullan worried during his tryout? A The difficulty of keeping focused. B. Serious competition among players. C. The thought of making simple mistakes. D. Uncertainty about teammates’ attitudes. 6. How does Fullan benefit his teammates with his presence? A. By sharing his life wisdom. B. By providing job opportunities. C. By driving detailed training plans. D. By offering practical baseball skills. 7. What message does the author mainly convey in the text? A. There are challenges for older athletes. B. Opportunities lie in proper preparation. C. It’s never too late to follow your dreams. D. Attention should be given to physical fitness. B 5. D 6. A 7. 根据第一段“Fullan retired (退休) last year to reach his goal of playing college baseball. “I never took the opportunity to play in college or continue to try,” he says. “It was always on my mind.”(富兰去年退休是为了实现自己参加大学棒球比赛的目标。“我从未抓住过参加大学比赛的机会,也从未再尝试过,”他说,“这件事一直萦绕在我的心头。”)”可知,富兰试图实现一个长久以来的梦想。故选B。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据第三段“The tryout made him anxious, particularly because he didn’t know how he was going to be received by his much younger teammates.(这次试训让他感到很紧张,尤其是因为他不知道自己会被比他年轻很多的队友们如何看待)”可知,他担心年轻队友对自己的态度,不确定能否被接纳。 根据倒数第二段“Actually, Fullan is able to pass along his wealth of knowledge from decades of life experience to his teammates.(实际上,富兰能够将自己数十年人生经验中积累的丰富知识传授给他的队友们)”可知,他将数十年的人生智慧分享给队友,帮助队友成长,故选A。 根据最后一段“His story has been an inspiration to many away from the baseball field, including Kelly Dunbar, director of athletics at Montgomery County Community College. “I admire his courage to keep his dream alive,” she says, “because many people don’t do that these days.”(他的故事激励了许多远离棒球场的人,其中包括蒙哥马利县社区学院的体育部主任凯利·邓巴。 C。 C Social relationships are considered important for human happiness, but it is common that many of us lose touch with friends and family that we were once close to. As old friends who had reconnected, Professor Lara Aknin and Dr. Gillian Sandstrom wanted to find out what stops other people from doing the same. Sandstrom said, “We live in a time when people have fewer close friends.” The researchers looked at the attitudes of almost 2,500 participants to reconnect with old friends, the barriers (阻碍) and the reasons for doing so. “We found that 90% of the participants had lost touch with someone they still cared about. Yet, 70% were neutral (中立的), or even negative, about the idea of getting back in touch at that moment, even when they felt warm about the friendship,” said Aknin. The researchers also studied how many people were willing to actually reach out to an old friend. Even when participants wanted to reconnect, thought the friend would be thankful, had their contact information, and were given time to write and send a message, only about a third actually sent it. The top reported barriers included fears that one’s old friend might not want to hear from them, and that it would be “too uncomfortable after all this time” and feeling “ashamed”. Being too busy — both the old friend and the participant — was the lowest reported reason for not reaching out. Notably, the researchers found that participants believed there were only a few compelling reasons for getting in touch, with the friend’s birthday reported as the most acceptable. Reconnecting over the memory of a shared experience was the second most reported reason. Participants were least likely to consider getting in touch with an old friend to ask them for help. As part of the research, the researchers tested certain methods. They found that starting by practicing social connection with present networks was the most successful method. It increased reach-out rates by over two thirds. With this practice, they were much more likely to progress towards messaging someone they had lost touch with. 8. What did the researchers aim to study? A. Ways to have more close friends. B. Secrets to gaining human happiness. C. Challenges in renewing old friendships. D. Reasons for shorter modern friendships. 9. How did most participants find regaining old friendships? A. They saw it as popular. B. They required support for it. C. They considered it quite simple. D. They had mixed feelings about it. 10. What is the biggest trouble with people’s contacting old friends? A. Worry about being refused. B. Loss of past shared memories. C. Pressure from busy schedules. D. Fear of hurting present friends. 11. What does the underlined word “compelling” in paragraph 5 mean? A. Funny. B. Surprising. C. Powerful. D. Noticeable. C 9. D 10. A 11. 根据第二段中的“As old friends who had reconnected, Professor Lara Aknin and Dr. Gillian Sandstrom wanted to find out what stops other people from doing the same.(作为重新联系的老朋友,Lara Aknin教授和Gillian Sandstrom博士想弄清楚是什么阻止了其他人做同样的事情。)” 根据第三段中的“Yet, 70% were neutral (中立的), or even negative, about the idea of getting back in touch at that moment, even when they felt warm about the friendship(然而,70%的人对在那一刻重新联系的想法持中立甚至消极的态度,即使他们对这段友谊感到温暖)”可知,大多数人对重建旧友谊既有温情,又持中立或消极态度,这说明他们对此情感复杂。 根据第五段中的“The top reported barriers included fears that one’s old friend might not want to hear from them, and that it would be “too uncomfortable after all this time” and feeling “ashamed”.(据报告,最主要的障碍包括担心一个人的老朋友可能不想收到他们的来信,担心“过了这么久会太不舒服”,并感到“羞愧”。)” 故选A。 C。 D Chickens can communicate with each other in many ways. They use body language such as showing off their feathers, but their less expressive faces might cause people not to notice their feelings, says backyard chicken expert Tove Danovich. “In fact, they are very expressive in other ways.” Primarily, they use their loud and unique voices. Tove Danovich and her team wondered if humans were able to pick up on the basic information of chicken well-being from sound alone. They experimented with nearly 200 participants from around the world for an online survey. Each participant listened to 16 types of hen sounds, including fast clucks (咯咯声) and food calls that show excitement, as well as low calls that show negative emotions (情绪). Researchers were surprised to find that 69 percent of all participants could tell if a chicken sounded excited or displeased, regardless of their earlier knowledge of chickens. It is worth mentioning that some participants had never been around chickens before. They also found that older participants were more likely to think the chicken sound was a happy one when it was actually sad. “Honestly, it makes a lot of sense to me,” Danovich says. “We think of animals as being so different from humans, but we are just another species (物种).” Different species of birds are able to pick up on each other’s alarm calls, and other animals-including humans-can pick up on signs of danger or unhappiness in other species. “I think it’s really beneficial for animals to be able to pick up on alarm calls from the other living things around us,” she says. “And just because we think of ourselves as being very separate from the rest of the nonhuman world, it really doesn’t mean that we are.” Researchers pointed out that another understanding of chicken well-being adds to the practice of friendlier animal farming. Danovich says that studies like this remind us that chickens are just like every other species around us. Staying connected to her own backyard chickens allows Danovich to pick up on an individual chicken’s excited and mad songs, making her a better caretaker. 12. How did the researchers test participants’ ability to understand chickens? A. By watching how they behave with chickens. B. By having them describe chickens’ body language. C. By asking them to recognize different chicken voices. D. By testing their knowledge of chicken communication. 13. What greatly influenced the participants’ judgments? A. Familiarity with chickens. B. The number of chickens. C. Personal emotions. D. Age differences. 14. What does Tove Danovich mainly want to express in paragraph 4? A. Animals rely highly on sight to notice danger. B. Animals have unique methods to express discomfort. C. Humans can train animals to understand other species. D. Humans share understandings of animal warning signs. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. Explore human-chicken communication B. Connect chicken sounds with their feelings C. Improve methods of training farm animals D. Keep the natural balance of the animal world. C 13. D 14. D 15. 根据第二段“Tove Danovich and her team wondered if humans were able to pick up on the basic information of chicken well-being from sound alone. They experimented with nearly 200 participants from around the world for an online survey. Each participant listened to 16 types of hen sounds, including fast clucks (咯咯声) and food calls that show excitement, as well as low calls that show negative emotions (情绪).(Tove Danovich和她的团队想知道人类是否能够仅从声音中获取鸡的健康状况的基本信息。 根据第三段中“They also found that older participants were more likely to think the chicken sound was a happy one when it was actually sad.(他们还发现,年龄较大的参与者更有可能认为鸡的声音是快乐的,而实际上它是悲伤的。)” 根据第四段中“Different species of birds are able to pick up on each other’s alarm calls, and other animals-including humans-can pick up on signs of danger or unhappiness in other species.(不同种类的鸟类能够识别彼此的警报声,包括人类在内的其他动物也能识别其他物种的危险或不快信号。)” 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段“Chickens can communicate with each other in many ways. They use body language such as showing off their feathers, but their less expressive faces might cause people not to notice their feelings, says backyard chicken expert Tove Danovich. “In fact, they are very expressive in other ways.” Primarily, they use their loud and unique voices.(鸡可以通过多种方式相互交流。 Our planet is home to a wide variety of life, all connected and dependent on each other. The excitement filled the hallways as students from every class began preparing for this popular event. The competition held a special place in our school’s tradition known for its wonderful performances and creative storytelling. However, due to the busy schedule, the first play could be performed in Chinese or English. This activity set the stage for serious competition between my team and Jim’s, because we both chose to act the same classic scene from Journey to the West. Jim was once an exchange student to America with excellent English skills, which allowed him to practice their scene effortlessly in English. Meanwhile, our team shone not in language but in performance artistry. Traditional instruments like pipa and hand drums set the scene for our drama. Several talented dancers among us gracefully acted beautiful monsters (妖怪) and my own role as Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, stood out. I acted out his spirit with fair imitation (模仿) of his voice and actions, and even performed impressive movements that left audiences in amazement. The competition was serious, yet our efforts paid off when our performance earned widespread praise from the judges, leading us to the final round. But here lay the challenge: We had to translate all our lines into English, a task discouraging for our team. Helpless, I turned to Jim, who had already finished the lines in English. Unfortunately, still sad for their unexpected failure, Jim turned me down. Refusing to give up, I came up with a plan. With my heart pounding and hands sweaty, I slid into (溜进) Jim’s classroom during the lunch break when no one was around. The room was quiet, with only the soft sound of papers and noises from the hallway. I carefully took Jim’s English play, went back to my seat and decided to copy it, believing it was the only way to save our hard work. As I was busy copying, Jim appeared before me. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ On the day of the final, we were fully prepared with Jim’s lines written for us. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: As I was busy copying, Jim appeared before me. My heart skipped a beat as I looked up to see his face with a mix of surprise and disappointment. “What are you doing?” he asked, his voice firm yet sad. Caught in the act, I felt ashamed and explained my desperation and the pressure our team was under. “I understand,” he said, “but this isn’t the way. Let’s work together to make this better.” His words caught me off guard, but I saw the sincerity in his eyes. I felt grateful for his understanding and willingness to help. On the day of the final, we were fully prepared with Jim’s lines written for us. As the curtain rose, our combined efforts shone through. The English dialogue, polished by Jim, flowed smoothly, improving the performance. The traditional instruments and graceful dances added a unique charm, harmonizing perfectly with the English narrative. The audience was impressed by our interpretation of Journey to the West. When the winners were announced, we were excited to hear our team’s name. This experience taught me the value of honesty and collaboration. 词汇激活 行为类 ①解释:explain/make an explanation/account for ②一起工作:work together/collaborate/cooperate ③升起:rise/ascend 情绪类 ①惊讶:surprise/amazement/astonishment ②兴奋:excited/thrilled 【点睛】【高分句型1】My heart skipped a beat as I looked up to see his face with a mix of surprise and disappointment. B Jim Fullan is often mistaken as a player’s dad. A. The difficulty of keeping focused. C Social relationships are considered important for human happiness, but it is common that many of us lose touch with friends and family that we were once close to. 9 How did most participants find regaining old friendships? A. They saw it as popular. B. They required support for it. C. They considered it quite simple. D. D Chickens can communicate with each other in many ways. The excitement filled the hallways as students from every class began preparing for this popular event. The competition held a special place in our school’s tradition, known for its wonderful performances and creative storytelling. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
