Have you ever watched a tennis game broadcast (播出) in English? If you have, then you ____31____ (probable) have noticed that the score “40-0” is read as “Forty to love” instead of “Forty to zero.” ____32____ neither side scores a point (that is, 0-0), then the score will be “Love-all.”
So how did “love” become a word for “zero” in tennis?
Most people believe this expression ____33____ (come) from French. It is said that the French use the word “l’oeuf” (it means “the egg”) to mean a score of zero. This is similar to calling a score of zero “a duck’s egg” ____34____ British English. When tennis was introduced into England from France, Englishmen also called a score of zero “l’oeuf.” However, some tennis fans didn’t know ____35____ (France). They mispronounced the French word as the English word “love” (the two words are close in pronunciation). Over time, “love” ended up with a new ____36____ (mean): a score of zero.
This is ____37____ (popular) explanation for the term’s origin (起源). Unluckily, researchers haven’t yet found proof (证明) that the French people ever used the word “l’oeuf” to mean “zero.” According to ____38____ (they) studies, the French always call the number “zero.”
Another explanation has been more widely accepted among some researchers. It says this usage came from the expression “to play for love.” Players who fail to score any points don’t care. They play for their love of the game, not just for a wish to win. The researchers have found written records ____39____ (support) this explanation. But most of ____40____ records are about card games, rather than tennis. So far, nobody knows for sure how “love” came to mean “zero” in tennis. More studies are needed to solve this puzzle (不解之谜).

Have you visited any traditional Chinese gardens? If you compare them to some Western gardens, you may find that traditional Chinese gardens look more like natural landscape. This is one of their main features (特征).
Chinese gardens have a long history. As early as 1500 BC, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇帝的) gardens and private gardens. There are over 3, 000 ancient buildings and more than 400, 000 plants in the garden. You can also see a great deal of priceless historical treasure. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum.”
As for private gardens, the most famous one is the Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园) in Suzhou. It has an area of 41, 000 square meters. When you stand in the garden, it looks like a beautiful picture from any angle (角度). And the whole garden looks different in different seasons.
The traditional Chinese gardens have been designed to look naturally formed. In fact, Chinese gardens are in some ways very much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The two have influenced and developed alongside one another. Both of them show the importance of nature in Chinese culture.

三、语篇填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
阅读短文,在空白处填入一个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
【答案】31. probably
32. If 33. comes
34. in 35. French
36. meaning
37. the most popular
38. their 39. supporting
40. the
【解析】

【31题详解】
句意:如果你看过,那么你可能已经注意到比分“40-0”会被读作“Forty to love”而不是“Forty to zero”。“probable”是形容词,此处需用副词“probably”修饰谓语动词“have noticed”,作状语。故填probably。
【32题详解】
句意:如果双方都没有得分(也就是 0-0),那么比分会是“Love-all”。此处引导条件状语从句,表“如果”,首字母需大写。故填If。
【33题详解】
句意:大多数人认为这种表达来自法语。句子描述客观事实,用一般现在时;主语“this expression”是第三人称单数,谓语动词“come”用第三人称单数形式“comes”。故填comes。
【34题详解】
句意:这和英式英语中把零分称为“a duck’s egg”类似。“in+某种英语变体”表示“在某种英语中”,固定用法。故填in。
【35题详解】
句意:然而,一些网球迷不懂法语。此处指“法语”,用名词“French”,作动词“know”的宾语。故填French。
【36题详解】
句意:久而久之,“love”最终有了一个新含义:零分。“mean”是动词,此处需用名词“meaning”,由“a”修饰,用单数形式。故填meaning。
【37题详解】
句意:这是关于这个术语起源最普遍的解释。结合语境,此处隐含与其他解释的对比,需用“popular”的最高级形式,前面加定冠词“the”。故填the most popular。
【38题详解】
句意:根据他们的研究,法国人一直把这个数字称为“zero”。“they”是人称代词主格,此处需用“their”修饰名词“studies”,作定语。故填their。
【39题详解】
句意:研究人员找到了支持这一解释的书面记录。“records”与“support”是主动关系,用现在分词“supporting”作后置定语,修饰“written records”。故填supporting。
【40题详解】
句意:但这些记录大多与纸牌游戏有关,而非网球。此处“records”特指前文提到的“written records”,表特指,用定冠词“the”。故填the。

Chinese gardens have a long history. As early as 1500 BC, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇帝的) gardens and private gardens. The Summer Palace (颐和园) in Beijing is China’s most famous imperial garden. It covers about three million square meters. Kunming Lake takes up almost three-fourths of the garden’s total area. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum.”

Last Sunday, I decided to cook a meal for my parents to show my thanks. They always work hard for me, but I never did anything for them. I prepared tomato and egg soup—their favorite. Though I made the kitchen messy, the soup turned out delicious. When my parents came home, they were surprised and happy. We enjoyed the meal together.
This experience made me understand that love is about giving. I will help do chores more often to make my parents feel loved.
