Wetlands, the “Earth’s kidneys,” are vital for a healthy planet. They clean our water and provide homes for wildlife. But for a long time, humans saw them as useless land, filling them in for farms and cities, which caused water pollution and loss of animal homes.
Thankfully, the story is changing. People now understand the importance of wetlands and are working to bring them back. A great example is the creation of wetland parks in China, like the Xixi National Wetland Park in Hangzhou. It shows how humans and nature can live in harmony.
Protecting wetlands starts with us. We can begin by learning about the wetlands near us and the life they support. A visit to a wetland park can help us see their beauty and understand their value firsthand. In our daily lives, saving water is also a powerful way to help, as using less water means more clean water can flow to these areas. Finally, sharing what we’ve learned with friends and family can spread the message of conservation further.
By taking these steps, we can all be part of protecting these wonderful places. Protecting wetlands is not just about saving nature, it is about protecting our own future.

How Animal Migration Helps Ecosystems
Many animals move from one place to another at certain times of the year—this is called migration. Migration is not just a journey for the animals, it plays a vital role in keeping ecosystems healthy.
For example, in Africa, millions of wildebeests migrate across the plains. As they move, they eat old grass, which allows new grass to grow. Their droppings also fertilize the soil. When predators like lions hunt the wildebeests, they keep the herd’s numbers balanced.
Birds that migrate help spread seeds. As they eat fruits, the seeds pass through their bodies and are dropped in new areas. This helps plants grow in different places, creating more homes for other animals. Even insects like butterflies migrate to carry pollen, which helps flowers reproduce.
However, migration is becoming harder for many animals. Climate change is altering weather patterns, and human buildings block their paths. Protecting migration routes is crucial to save both the animals and the ecosystems they support.
1. What is migration according to the passage?
A. Animals’ daily activities in their home.
B. Animals’ movement between places at certain times.
C. Animals’ fight against predators.
D. Animals’ way of communicating with each other.
2. The underlined word “fertilize” in Paragraph 2 means ________ in Chinese.
A. 污染 B. 破坏 C. 肥沃 D. 占用
3. Why is migration important for ecosystems?
A. It helps animals find better homes. B. It stops predators from growing too fast.
C. It balances nature in many ways. D. It allows humans to study animal behavior.
4. How do migrating birds help plants?
A. They eat harmful insects on plants. B. They carry seeds to new areas.
C. They build nests in tall trees. D. They drink water from plant leaves.
5. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. Human activities make migration easier. B. Climate change has no effect on migration.
C. Protecting migration routes is necessary. D. Most animals have stopped migrating.
D
As winter draws near, many of the cold-blooded animals hibernate(冬眠)till spring comes. And everybody knows they will be awake in a few months, crawling and walking around and looking for food,
But do you also know that some animals go to a summer sleep, which is called aestivation(夏眠)? Most animals are active during the summer, singing and dancing freely. The aestivating animals, however, will have a long sleep in a cool place to stay away from the dry and hot summer days.
In Southeast Africa, there is a kind of porcupine(豪猪). Its body is covered with sharp stings(刺). This creature usually eats earthworms as its main food. As the hot days come, the earthworms go deep under the mud(泥)to keep themselves alive. During this time the porcupine can’t find any to live on , so it lies down to aestivate for months without eating. It comes out again when the cool autumn days arrive.
An unusual kind of tree frog in South Africa will climb up a tree during the summer. Here it hides itself in a cool place to have its summer sleep.
The most interesting thing about the aestivating(夏眠)animal is that while it sleeps, its body temperature drops just as the hibernating animal’s body temperature drops in winter.
1. Why do porcupines aestivate?
A. Because they are not active animals.
B. Because the weather is too hot and dry.
C. Because they have nothing to eat during the summer.
D. Because their body temperature is not high enough.
2. When does the porcupine in Southeast Africa start and end its aestivation?
A. Its aestivation starts in January and ends in March.
B. Its aestivation starts in March and ends in April.
C. Its aestivation starts in August and ends in October.
D. Its aestivation starts in November and ends in February the next year.
3. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Hibernating animals are active in summer.
B. Porcupines in Southeast Africa live mainly on earthworms.
C. One kind of tree frog in South Africa sleeps inside trees in summer.
D. The body temperature of an aestivating animal in summer is as low as that in winter.
4. What can we conclude(推断出)from the passage?
A. Aestivating animals are fewer than hibernating animals.
B. The aestivating animal is as cold as the hibernating animal.
C. Some animals have formed a habit to get through a difficult time.
D. The body temperature of the animals all over the world keeps changing.

On April 24th, 2025, when China celebrated the 10th China Space Day, the Shenzhou-20 spacecraft(航天器)flew into space. Have you ever wondered how interesting life is for astronauts up there?
Astronauts live very differently in space. Because there is little gravity(重力), they cannot cook food like we do on Earth. They eat special food that is made before they go into space. There are no real beds in space, so astronauts sleep in sleeping bags that are fixed to the wall. There is no “up” or “down” in space, so they can sleep in any position(位置). To stay healthy, they use special bikes to exercise every day.
Spacewalks are also an important part of an astronaut’s job. When they go outside the space station, they wear space suits with about seven layers. These layers help protect them from very hot and very cold temperatures and from other dangers in space. During spacewalks, astronauts can fix broken parts and take care of the space station.
The Shenzhou-20 team will stay in space for about six months. One of their jobs is to study zebrafish(斑马鱼). These small fish are like humans in some ways, so they help scientists learn how low gravity changes living things. Astronauts also study microbes(微生物). These studies may help us make better medicine. All of these help China get ready to send people to the Moon before 2030.
These interesting jobs show how hard Chinese astronauts work. Their job is not easy, but it is very important. They also make young people like us want to dream big. Maybe one day, you could be an astronaut, flying in space and helping write the next part of human space history.
1. Why can’t astronauts cook like us on Earth according to the text?
A. There is low gravity. B. The food is too hot.
C. They have no kitchen. D. They don’t know how to cook.
2. What does the underlined word “layers” in Paragraph 3 mean?
A. Heavy tools for walking in space. B. Rooms where astronauts sleep.
C. Thin parts that cover and protect the body. D. Machines used to help astronauts breathe.
3. How does the writer support the idea that astronauts’ work is important in Paragraph 4?
A. By giving examples of their work in space. B. By telling a funny story about astronauts.
C. By comparing astronauts with other people. D. By asking readers some questions.
4. Which of the following do the Shenzhou-20 team do in space according to the text?
①Astronauts study fish and microbes in space. ②Astronauts sleep in fixed sleeping bags.
③Astronauts take a walk on the moon. ④Astronauts ride special bikes to exercise.
A. ①②③ B. ②③④ C. ①③④ D. ①②④
5. What is the writer’s main purpose(意图)of writing this text?
A. To teach students how to become astronauts.
B. To show space travel is only for scientists.
C. To share knowledge and encourage young readers.
D. To explain why space suits are expensive.

Cutting the Grass
A charity(慈善组织)in the UK is asking people not to cut down the grass in their garden. When spring arrives, many gardeners mow(修剪)their lawns. The activity is part of a project called “No Mow May”. It helps flowers grow wild and insects breed. The purpose of No Mow May is to keep the nature in balance. It is from the charity Plantlife. The charity is also asking people to count the types and number of wild flowers in their garden. Plantlife considers that leaving the grass uncut creates habitats(栖息地)which will help “bees, butterflies, wildlife and us”. Bees are a basic part of nature as they spread flowers. Cutting the grass means there are fewer flowers for bees and other insects to live on.
A spokesperson for Plantlife said garden lawns have the possibilities to be “biodiversity hotspots”. Last year, the charity found over 250 kinds of plants on people’s lawns. These included wild strawberries and wild eggplants. Plantlife wants people to value wild lawns more. It said people would get a nice, colorful surprise if they did not cut their grass. One gardener spoke to the BBC about the joy of wild gardens. He said people care too much about having a clean garden and use too much compost. He believes not mowing the lawn lets people reconnect with the natural world. Plantlife agreed. It said a wild garden makes you have more fun instead of your own garden.
1. What is the purpose of No Mow May?
_____________________________________
2. What does cutting the grass in your garden mean?

Even a little gift of nature can make us feel free and hopeful, such as breathing in fresh air, listening to the wind in the trees or standing at a mountain. Ralphie, who is 10, likes being close to nature on a bike with his family. He says, “It makes us feel happy and takes our mind off things because we have to focus. We are away from traffic and we hear more birdsong and see more wild animals.”
How can we feel closer to nature?
Feeling closer to nature is easy. We can build a connection(联系)with nature wherever we are using our senses. Try listening closely to birdsong, smelling flowers and feeling sand between our fingers. Paint a picture and take photos of the natural places that we like best. They may help us feel closer to the natural world.

How do you feel when you hear birds singing freely in the trees? What’s your feeling when you see butterflies dancing slowly and lightly in the wind? Whether you love researching the outdoors or watching far away, getting close to nature can take your mind off your worries and make you relax.
What is nature?
Nature means the world around us that is not man-made, including birds, mountains, trees, the sea and the stars. It’s also a force(力量)that controls things like weather. We can find nature here and there— beaches, gardens, parks, rivers, and even unexpected places like cracks(裂缝)in the stones.
Why does nature make us feel good?
Spending time in nature brings peace, joy and wonder to our lives. It takes us outdoors, gets us active and lets us care more about the environment.
It’s important to try and connect with nature, notice its beauty and how it makes us feel.
