The giant panda is known as panda bear or simply panda, and it is also a bear native to south central China. It is the only kind in China, and its main living places are Sichuan, Shaanxi and the mountains of Gansu.
Panda is one of the cutest animals in the world. It has two large black patches(斑块)around eyes, a round face and fat body. It can be 1.2-1.8 meters long, 10-12 cm in tail length and 80-120kg in weight and even weigh up to 180 kg. Though pandas belong to the animals which mainly feed on meat, over 99% of its food is bamboo. The panda in the wild is between 18 and 20 years old, but can be over 30 in captivity(圈养).
The panda has been living on Earth for at least eight million years. It’s known as the “living fossil(化石)” and the “national treasure of China”. It has made a big difference to the development of foreign friendly relations. A report showed the wild panda population had increased to 1,864 by the end of 2013. By the end of 2015, there were 422 pandas in captivity in China.

The Sky Dancer of the Forest
Deep in the rainforests of Australia lives one of nature’s most magical creatures—the sugar glider. This tiny animal isn’t a bird, but it flies through the night sky using skin flaps between its legs, making it the most graceful glider in the animal kingdom. Can you imagine seeing a furry squirrel-like creature soaring silently between trees?
Scientists have discovered a fascinating connection between sugar gliders and humans. They’re the most efficient seed dispersers for eucalyptus trees—trees that provide the strongest natural medicine humans use against colds. Sadly, these forests are shrinking at the fastest rate in history due to logging.
This is why protecting sugar gliders matters. They’re not just cute animals, they’re guardians of the most important forest ecosystem. Without them, eucalyptus seeds wouldn’t travel far, and soon we’d lose the most valuable natural pharmacy on Earth. Last year, I joined a youth project planting “glider highways”—trees connecting isolated forests. Seeing a glider reclaim its path was the proudest moment of my life.
Now I understand the true importance of tiny creatures. Sugar gliders teach us that the smallest beings often hold the greatest power to keep nature balanced. After all, aren’t humans and forests the closest partners in survival?
1. What makes sugar gliders unique?
A. They produce eucalyptus medicine. B. They can glide between trees.
C. They are the largest forest animals. D. They build highways for humans.
2. Why is protecting sugar gliders crucial?
A. They cure human diseases directly. B. They maintain vital seed dispersal.
C. They prevent forest logging. D. They are the fastest growing species.
3. What does “importance” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. Medical value of eucalyptus trees. B. Role of small creatures in ecosystems.
C. Need for youth conservation projects. D. Speed of rainforest destruction.
4. What is the main purpose of “glider highways”?
A. To help humans travel through forests. B. To connect fragmented habitats.
C. To plant more eucalyptus trees. D. To study animal flight patterns.
C
Animals are important to us and they are our friends. But some of them are in great danger now. What can we do to help save them?
Don’t eat meat from wild animals. Some of us like to eat meat. But do you know some meat comes from endangered animals? To save these animals, we must stop eating their meat.
Don’t wear clothes made of fur. Sometimes people kill animals for fur. If we stop buying clothes made of fur, people will not kill animals. Everyone should remember this.
Save the environment. Many wild animals are in great danger because they are losing their homes. People need more houses, so they cut down more and more trees. They also make air and water dirty.
Give money to Animal Helpers. The group does everything to help save animals. But it often needs money. So save some money and give it to the group to help animals in danger. Or you can just join them to help save endangered animals.
Tell people to save animals. Not all people know animals are our friends. Not everybody understand the importance of saving animals. Saving animals is something we should do together. So you can tell them stories about these lovely animals. This way, they may start to care.
1. Why do some people kill animals according to the passage?

③Because they don’t like animals. ④Because they sell the fur for money.
A. ①② B. ③④ C. ①④ D. ②③
2. The underlined word “this” in Paragraph 3 refers to(指的是)________.

The Dead Sea is located in the Jordan Rift Valley in southwest Asia. It is about 50 kilometers long and 15 kilometers wide at its widest point. It sits at about 430 meters below sea level, making it the lowest point on Earth’s land.
What’s interesting is that the Dead Sea isn’t actually a sea. It’s a lake with a salt concentration(浓度)of more than 30 percent, which is about eight times saltier than typical seawater. This makes it one of the saltiest bodies of water on Earth.
The Dead Sea stays so salty due to its special natural conditions. Each year, it receives very little rainfall, and only a small amount of fresh water flows into it. And the hot weather around the Dead Sea causes the fresh water to evaporate(蒸发)quickly, which makes the salt concentration even higher. For these reasons, it is also known as the Salt Sea.
If you were to swim in the Dead Sea, you wouldn’t see any sea life-no plants or animals. The high salt concentration makes it impossible for them to survive there. That’s actually why it’s called the Dead Sea.
However, don’t let the name or not having any sea life scare you. Even if you fall into the Dead Sea and can’t swim, you won’t die. The high concentration of salt in the Dead Sea allows anyone to float well, without the need for life buoys(救生圈). In fact, many people visit the Dead Sea every year on vacation. If you walk along the shore(海岸), you’ll likely see many people floating in the water, reading books or magazines.
1. Where is the Dead Sea?
A. In the middle of a desert. B. On top of a high mountain.
C. In a rift valley in Asia. D. In a deep valley in America.
2. Why did the Dead Sea get its name from “dead”?
A. It has no living things. B. No water runs into it.
C. It has very little rainfall. D. No people live around it.
3. What can we infer (推断) from the last paragraph?
A. Swimming in the Dead Sea is tiring.
B. The Dead Sea is a popular place for tourists.
C. The salt in the Dead Sea is bad for people’s skin.
D. The Dead Sea is dangerous for people who can’t swim.
4. What’s the purpose of this passage?
A. To show how the Dead Sea formed.
B. To explain how the Dead Sea got its name.
C. To let people know more about the Dead Sea.
D. To teach people how to float in the Dead Sea.

Many people know that rubbish is a big problem on the earth. What many people don’t know is that junk(垃圾)has become a problem in outer space too.
According to BBC News, there are more than 22,000 pieces of space junk floating around the earth. And these are just the things that we can see from the surface of the earth by telescopes(望远镜). There are also millions of smaller pieces of junk that we can’t see.
Objects(物体), like bits of old space rockets or satellites, move around the planet at very high speeds. They are so fast that even a very small piece can break important satellites or become a danger to astronauts. If the tiniest piece of junk crashes into a spaceship, it can damage the spaceship.
To make things worse, when two objects in space crash, they will break into many smaller pieces. For example, when a US satellite hit an old Russian satellite in 2009, they broke into thousands of pieces, increasing the amount of space junk.
To reduce additional space junk, countries have agreed that all new space tools can only stay in space for 25 years at most. Each tool must be built to fall safely into the earth’s atmosphere(大气层)after that time. In the upper parts of the atmosphere, it will burn up.
Many scientists are also suggesting different ways to clean up space junk. In the UK, scientists are testing a metal net that can be fired into space junk. The net catches the junk and then pulls it into the earth’s atmosphere to burn up. The Germans are building robots that can collect pieces of space junk and bring them back to the earth to be safely destroyed.
“The problem is becoming more challenging because we’re sending more objects into space to help people use their mobile phones and computers,” says Marco Castronuovo, an Italian space researcher.
“It’s time to act now. The longer we leave the problem, the bigger it will become,” he says.
1. What does the underlined word “these” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A. Telescopes. B. Satellites. C. Pieces of space junk. D. BBC News reports.
2. Why is space junk considered a problem?
A. Because it burns up after it enters the atmosphere.
B. Because it often blocks the view of the telescopes on the earth.
C. Because it can force(迫使)new space tools to travel at slower speeds.
D. Because it may crash into other space tools causing damage or death.
3. Countries want future space tools to be able to fall back into the earth’s atmosphere so that _____.
A. the tools can be reused later B. the tools won’t become space junk
C. the earth’s atmosphere can stay clean D. the effects of the space flight can be studied
4. How do the Germans plan to deal with space junk?
A. Catch it with nets. B. Use robots to collect it.
C. Burn it in the earth’s atmosphere. D. Send it further away from the earth.

Not all penguins live in cold places. African penguins live in the south of Africa. Like other penguins, African penguins spend most of the day feeding in the ocean, and that helps keep them cool.
Most other penguins lay their eggs in the open. However, African penguins do it in a different way. They dig holes to lay their eggs so that they are protected from the sun’s heat(高温). The baby penguins stay in the holes for about three weeks. After that, they start going out and return to the holes to stay cool and avoid dangerous animals. On land, some animals, such as dogs and cats, will eat penguins.
African penguins are in danger now. There are only about 52,000 left in the wild. One problem is that they are losing their homes. Other problems include humans picking penguin eggs for sale, competing with humans for fish, and facing the oil pollution in the ocean.

Our world is facing many dangerous situations. We must do something to protect the environment.
The greenhouse effect
When we burn fuels such as petrol and coal, a gas called CO₂ is produced. Too much of this gas pollutes the atmosphere(大气), and causes it to keep in too much heat. As a result of the greenhouse effect, the earth’s temperature is going up so quickly that the sea level is caused to become higher and higher, and in the future, you may have difficulty seeing any city in the world.
Cutting down forests
Every year, we destroy(破坏)nature by cutting down huge areas of forests. This makes the greenhouse effect worse because trees take in CO₂ and give out O₂. Cutting down trees also destroys the homes of the animals that live in our forests, and causes the surface of the soil to be more easily destroyed by rain. This can lead to floods and even more damage to the environment.
Bad habits
Many of our habits cause pollution. People often use things once and then throw them away, or leave them on the ground as litter. This creates tons of rubbish and pollutes our land and seas all the time.
In order to protect the environment, we need to take proper action. Chinese government has made laws and rules about dealing with the waste. We need to give up bad habits and try to develop good habits. We should buy and use environmentally-friendly products. To reduce air pollution, we can walk or take public transport.
If we just learn to live in new and different ways, we can make a difference.

E(时文阅读)
【答案】1. C 1. D 2. B 3. B
