I remember waiting almost the entire year for the New Year's holidays. I remember saving money and keeping that for buying New Year cards. And that was the most unforgettable memory of my childhood instead of getting pocket money. I remember those beautiful little cards and the small envelopes in which I used to put those cards. In fact, the biggest and the best card was for our teacher, the second-best for the best friend, and the rest was for others, including my brothers and sisters. I remember spending a whole week in happiness and bringing home a lot of New Year cards. Nowadays when I see those cards I am reminded of my childhood. And I still buy one for myself. I hope many of you do. And on this occasion, we will hand out New Year cards, chocolates, and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little presents. After that, we will move on to our musical journey.

The British coastline has a wild beauty in the colder months but still offers amazing wildlife, views and fresh air. Our guide looks at the best beaches from some counties in the UK to visit in the winter months.
Hauxley Bay, Northumberland
When freezing Scandinavian winds blow across the North Sea, Hauxley Beach can be bleak (荒凉的) indeed. Waves beat the sand, uncovering 8000-year-old remains of trees that grew well in the Doggerland forest that once linked Britain with Europe.
Robin Hood’s Bay, Yorkshire
Robin Hood’s Bay is a hidden bit of history, with its raw cliffs (悬崖), red-roofed cottages and unusual architecture. The beach itself is one of the UK’s best spots for fossil (化石) hunting. Perfect to visit in winter, you can enjoy a walk along the cliffs or beach to take in the historical village and impressive views and end in one of the many cosy bars.
Embleton Bay, Northumberland
A beautiful long stretch of beach overlooked by the impressive ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle, Embleton Bay is a perfect winter beach. On a clear cold morning the ruins can be seen perfectly from the beach and the beach itself backs onto sand hills, famous for the flowers, grasses and birds.
Heysham, Lancashire
The village of Heysham has some wonderful views to enjoy this winter. The town backs directly onto the cliffs and beaches creating some different beautiful views. The famous graves in the ruins of St. Patrick’s Chapel are also worth a visit and look particularly ghostly covered in a winter mist.

At 40, actor Hou Xiang still plays the role of child on screen. His body, frozen in time since age 9, stands at 1.3 meters tall with a childlike face — a result of premature birth complications that damaged his hormone (激素) system, as diagnosed by doctors. Tears flowed for his mother, but young Hou Xiang still believed that he’d catch up with peers someday.
Life is cruel. While classmates grew taller and taller, he remained small. At 15, friends towered over him; at 18, entering art school, he was mistaken by his roommates for a lost child looking for parents. He was forced to declare, “I’m a freshman too,” with his voice carrying unspoken frustration. At 19, playing the role of “Huang Feihong” in the Home with Kids made him famous — a role that brought joy yet bittersweet awareness: directors valued him only for his “childlike” appearance, not his adulthood.
Life off-screen proved harder. Romantic expectations faltered (动摇) when his girlfriend’s parents asked, “How old is this child?” Post-marriage, strangers said, “That’s her son.” While someone online laughed at their “mismatched” union, his wife’s steadfast reply — “I love the person, not the appearance” — became his beacon. Hou Xiang states, “Being cast means I’m still useful.”
Hou Xiang has proven through four decades that life has no fixed pattern. When he declares “I can” before the camera, and when his wife melts prejudice (偏见) with love, they both show us respect for difference. This mirror reflects how we should regard others’ choices — not with a single standard, but with the understanding that each life writes its own answer.
24. What caused Hou Xiang to keep a childlike appearance even at the age of 40?
A. A genetic disease from his parents.
B. An accident during his childhood.
C. A lack of nutrition when he was young.
D. Birth complications damaging his hormone system.
25. What mainly limited Hou's on-screen roles?
A. His lack of professional training.
B. His unique physical appearance.
C. His preference for certain characters.
D. His unwillingness to grow up.
26. What challenge did Hou Xiang face in his real life?
A. Strangers mistook him for his wife's son.
B. His parents were strongly against his marriage.
C. His wife regretted marrying him after a few years.
D. He couldn't find a girlfriend because of his appearance.
27. What message does Hou Xiang's story mainly convey?
A. Blood is thicker than water.
B. Actions speak louder than words.
C. Don't put all eggs in one basket.
D. Every living soul has its unique spark.
【答案】24. D 25. B 26. A 27. D
【解析】

【24题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段中的“His body, frozen in time since age 9, stands at 1.3 meters tall with a childlike face — a result of premature birth complications that damaged his hormone (激素) system, as diagnosed by doctors.(经医生诊断,由于早产并发症损害了他的激素系统,他的身体从9岁起就定格了,身高1.3米,面容稚气)”可知,侯祥40岁仍保持孩童外貌的原因是早产并发症损害了他的激素系统。故选D项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段中的“At 19, playing the role of “Huang Feihong” in the Home with Kids made him famous — a role that brought joy yet bittersweet awareness: directors valued him only for his “childlike” appearance, not his adulthood.(19岁时,他在《家有儿女》中饰演“黄飞鸿”一角,这让他一举成名——这个角色带来了快乐,也带来了苦涩的认知:导演们只看重他“孩童般”的外表,而非他的成年身份)”可知,限制侯祥银幕角色的主要因素是他独特的外貌,只能出演孩童类角色。故选B项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Post-marriage, strangers said, “That’s her son.”(结婚后,陌生人会说:“那是她的儿子。”)”可知,侯祥在现实生活中面临的挑战是陌生人误将他当作妻子的儿子。故选A项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是最后一段中的“Hou Xiang has proven through four decades that life has no fixed pattern. When he declares “I can” before the camera, and when his wife melts prejudice (偏见) with love, they both show us respect for difference. This mirror reflects how we should regard others’ choices — not with a single standard, but with the understanding that each life writes its own answer.(侯祥用四十年的人生证明,生活没有固定的模式。当他在镜头前宣称 “我能行”,当他的妻子用爱消融偏见时,两人都向我们展现了对差异的尊重。这面镜子映照出我们应如何看待他人的选择—— 不应以单一标准衡量,而应理解每个生命都在书写属于自己的答案)”可知,侯祥的故事主要传达“每个生命都有其独特光芒”的道理,即使面临身体局限,也能活出自身价值。故选D项。
C
It’s very common to lose touch with someone you consider a friend. In a 2024 study, 90 percent of participants admitted they had let an old friendship go. Most further claimed that they were not sure whether their friend would actually like to hear from them again.
But that wasn’t the only obstacle. In two follow-up studies, the research team identified a group of about 1,000 participants altogether who were in a good spot to reach out. They had someone in mind they thought would be glad to hear from them. They wished to reconnect as well and had contact information. Surprisingly, even after being prompted by the study, only a third of this group actually reached out.
Why might that be? One possibility is that the old friend felt like a stranger, and you aren’t comfortable talking to strangers. When the team introduced an exercise that made people feel less shy about talking to a stranger, they also became more likely to reach out to the old friend.
There are many other possibilities. You might be shy in general. You might be busy and tired in your free time. You might be satisfied with your family life or feel you need to give your spouse or children more of your attention. Perhaps you are a little embarrassed by how your life has turned out. In any of those circumstances, why should you push yourself to make the effort?
Why reaching out to old friends is worth it. Most of us understand that strong relationships make us happier and healthier. You might think that one or two stable bonds are enough. However, research suggests that people with a bigger network tend to be happier, especially in later life.
It also helps to have a diverse network of people who live in different places, know you in different ways, or vary in age or interests. Although having a strong marriage or tie with a sibling is priceless, it’s best to be able to turn to a range of people to fill different needs. A diversified friend group is like having a diversified group of mutual funds. When one goes down, the other might be going up.
If you’re feeling excited about seeing your old camp buddies, reach out.
28. According to the passage, what was the surprising finding of the follow-up studies?
A. People were too shy to talk to strangers.
B. About 90% of people have let an old friendship go.
C. Most people don’t have their old friends’ contact information.
D. Only about 30% of the participants actually contacted their old friend.
29. What does “spouse” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. A close old friend.
B. A husband or wife.
C. A parent or child.
D. A teacher or classmate.
30. What is the author’s attitude towards reconnecting old friends?
A. Supportive. B. Opposed. C. Neutral. D. Indifferent.
31. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Family bonds are considered more important than friendships.
B. Career achievements outweigh maintaining social connections.
C. Reconnecting with past companions benefits personal well-being.
D. People should avoid rebuilding former relationships intentionally.
【答案】28. D 29. B 30. A 31. C

An international team of scientists has made a surprising discovery: some types of bacteria (细菌) living inside tumors can actually produce a special molecule (分子) that helps our body fight cancer. We usually think such bacteria are in our gut or on our skin, but new research shows that tumors have their own unique ones that can help too.
This exciting finding was published in the journal Cell Systems. The researchers focused on a powerful molecule named 2-methylisocitrate (2-MiCit). This molecule is made by a common bacterium called E. coli, which was found living inside colorectal tumors (结直肠肿瘤). How did they find it? They first tested over 1,100 different conditions using tiny worms as a simple model. After this, they used computer models to check their discovery and confirmed that bacteria taken from real cancer patients' tumors could also produce 2-MiCit.
The most important part of the study happened when they tested 2-MiCit directly on human cancer cells in the lab and on fruit flies that had colorectal cancer. In both experiments, the molecule showed strong anti-cancer effects. It successfully killed cancer cells and even helped the sick flies live longer. Professor Filipe Cabreiro, one of the lead scientists, explained, “We are starting to understand the chemical conversation between bacteria and cancer cells. This bacterial chemical can be a powerful partner for chemotherapy (化疗) to treat cancer.”
So, how does it work? The study shows that 2-MiCit attacks the energy centers of the cancer cells. This attack causes damage to the cell’s DNA and weakens the cancer cell. Because the cancer cells are weaker, they become much easier to kill with a common chemotherapy drug called 5-FU. Using 2-MiCit and 5-FU together was much more effective at killing cancer cells than using either one by itself.
Furthermore, the scientists created a changed, stronger, man-made version of the 2-MiCit molecule. This shows that we have the potential to create new and better drugs for cancer. These findings open up new paths for cancer treatment and personalized medicine.
32. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A To discuss the side effects of a drug.
B. To explain how bacteria can be harmful.
C. To recommend a new drug which is helpful to fight cancer.
D. To introduce a new finding on how bacteria help fight cancer.
33. What can we infer from Professor Filipe Cabreiro’s words?
A. The talk between bacteria and cancer cells is fully known now.
B. The way bacteria and cancer cells interact can be used for treatment.
C. Chemotherapy is not needed for cancer treatment anymore.
D. Personal microbes are not important for personalized medicine.
34. According to the passage, how does 2-MiCit help fight cancer?
A. By replacing chemotherapy drugs.
B. By providing energy for healthy cells.
C. By damaging the DNA of cancer cells.
D. By making the walls of cancer cells stronger.
35. Which of the following is TRUE based on the passage?
A. 2-MiCit was first found in human patients.
B. Using 2-MiCit with 5-FU was less effective.
C. A more powerful version of 2-MiCit was made.
D. The research only studied bacteria on the skin.

Ladies and gentleman, you can have your seats and enjoy with us the rest of the program. The new year for me, especially when I was quite Young, was more of a festival. I remember waiting almost the entire year for the new year's holidays. I remember saving money and keeping that for buying new yeah cuts. And that was the most unforgettable memory of my childhood. Instead of getting pocket money, I remember those beautiful little cards and the small envelopes in which I used to put those cards. In fact, the biggest and the best card was for our teacher, the second best for the best friend, and the rest was for others, including my brothers and sisters. I hope many of you do. And on this occasion we will hand out new yeah cards, chocolate and flowers to everyone. Volunteers will go to you and pass you these little present.
Heysham Lancashire

If you’re feeling excited about seeing your old camp buddies reach out.
D
A. To discuss the side effects of a drug.
D Personal microbes are not important for personalized medicine.
