Because of the bad weather, a number of train journeys are running late and some have been cancelled. These include all train journeys heading north and east. The heavy snow falling on the tracks could cause great safety risks, so our rail workers are trying hard to clear them, but the snow is expected to last for hours. The service will return to Normal once the snow cleaning is done. Strong winds in the west of london have also blown trees down. This has caused many power cuts. The only train journeys that are still running are the ones heading to the south of the city, but they may also be cancelled if the weather gets any worse. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Sadly, this is out of our control. I wish everyone a safe journey home. If anyone wants to change the schedule, please head to the ticket counter. El Calafate, Argentina Each day, buses leave El Calafate for the Perito Moreno glacier — an easily reachable ice formation and one of the few advancing glaciers in the world. A system of boardwalks takes visitors to different viewpoints, allowing them to be amazed at this bright, blue-white wall of ice. Futaleufú, Chile Picture this: you and your rafting team are waiting for the guide’s signal to paddle as hard as you can. Massive river waves crash against the boat, and white-water spray soaks you completely. You wipe your eyes and enjoy the warm sun while the Northern Hemisphere(北半球)is in deep winter, and there are many local guesthouses for your stay. Cueva de las Manos, Argentina Located in a remote canyon, accessible by tour or private car, a boardwalk guides you past a large rock face covered with ancient art. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is among South America’s most well-known rock art locations, featuring over 800 outlines of human hands and images of animals. Punta Tombo, Argentina You can smell the penguins before you see them. The sight of nearly a million Magellanic penguins — some in caves, some swimming in the sea, others standing nearby — makes a strong impression. The long, thin island also brings in gulls, flightless steamer ducks. 21. What is the highlight of the tour to El Calafate? A. Creating icy artworks. B. Viewing moving glaciers. C. Joining daily bus groups. D. Walking across the icy boardwalks. 22. When is a good time for the rafting trip in Futaleufú? A. December. B. April. C. July. D. September. 23. Which tour best suits those interested in observing animals? A. Futaleufú, Chile. B. El Calafate, Argentina. C. Punta Tombo, Argentina. D. Cueva de las Manos, Argentina. B One day last January, my classroom was full of nervous atmosphere as 15 teenagers prepared to lock their smartphones in a cabinet (柜子) and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks. The ceremony kicked off a mini-course I taught called Logging Off. During the school year, I taught high school chemistry, but this mini-course gave my students and me a chance to examine the role of technology in our lives. When the time came to power down, many students were eager to be free of their phones, while others held onto their phones and their emotions seemed to range from worry (“How will I talk with my friends?”) to expectation (“I can’t wait to read more books.”). Over the next few days, the students showed a surprising source of anxiety. Without their phones, they weren’t sure what to do when there was nothing to do. That’s when it hit me: I long for the kind of time alone with my thoughts that my students feared. I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong, imagine myself living abroad, or stare at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life. As we closed in on the final days of the course, I noticed a change in the kids’ attitude. Their anxiety faded. They went for walks, composed music, and played board games. They experienced life in the moment. On the last day, when I returned their phones, I expected the kids to power up immediately and go straight to social media. Instead, most of them left the classroom with screens still dark, saying they wanted to see how long they could wait. I know the pull of the digital world is strong, but I’m hoping the brief break from connectivity with phones has shown my students that they have a choice in what to do in their downtime, while they’re waiting in line for coffee or walking home. I hope they seize the precious chance to daydream. 24. What did the author’s students decide to do? A. Put more effort into chemistry learning. B. Live without the Internet for the school year. C. Put their phones aside for a period of time. D. Stop themselves from connecting each other. 25. What is paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Students’ thoughts about technology. B. Students’ expectations of the mini-course. C. Students’ emotions at the end of the mini-course. D. Students’ different reactions at the beginning stage. 26. What does the author like doing in her moments alone? A. Making up stories. B. Imagining her future life. C. Preparing for overseas travel. D. Reflecting on a funny conversation. 27. What did most students do when they got their phones back? A. They kept their phones off. B. They went straight back to social media. C. They made changes to their phone screens. D. They had their phones recharged immediately. C In a track meet, all runners have the same goal: go faster. But a new study in the journal Current Biology shows that speeding up might require us to fight against our natural biology. By putting together data from runners monitored in a lab with 37,000 runs recorded on wearable fitness trackers, scientists have found that humans tend to run at a speed that saves caloric(卡路里)loss—something that racers seeking to increase their speed will have to get over. The research group have been studying the mechanics of running in labs for 15 years but hadn’t gotten a chance to study running in the wild before. “We joined the two datasets to gain new insights and combine the more disorganized wearable data with the gold standard lab experiments to learn about how people run out,” says co-author Jennifer Hicks. What surprised the team was the consistency(一致性)they found across the combined datasets. “We had thought that people ran faster for shorter distances and then would slow their pace for longer distances,” says first author Jessica Selinger. But this wasn’t the case. Most runners studied held onto the same speed, whether they were going a short run or a long one over ten kilometers. From an evolutionary(进化)standpoint, it makes sense that people would run at the speed that uses the least amount of energy. This caloric saving is something that has been observed across the animal kingdom. But humans’ reasons for running have changed, and if the goal is speed, there are some tricks runners can use. It has been proven that listening to faster-paced music or running with faster partners helps speed up. Hicks hopes that having large pools of fitness data from wearables will help researchers learn more about people. “You can look at connections with the built environment and access to free-time resources and start to layer all this data to better understand how to improve physical activity and health more clearly.” says Hicks. 28. What do runners have to overcome during the race? A. Natural requirement. B. Speed increase. C. Energy-saving tendency. D. Biological science. 29. What was the team’s earlier idea about running? A. People would slow their breath in the long run. B. People would control their ability when running. C. People would run faster and faster in the short run. D. People would change their speeds for different distances. 30. Why are “music” and “partners” mentioned in paragraph 4? A. To offer tips on speed increase. B. To prove the advantages of running. C. To explain the importance of fast running. D. To uncover the change in human running goals. 31. What’s Hicks’ attitude to the data from wearables? A. Unclear. B. Favorable. C. Doubtful. D. Critical. D In the past few decades, researchers have uncovered and road-tested a host of techniques that deepen learning but remain largely unknown outside scientific circles. These approaches aren’t smarter plans that require computer software, cleverly-designed tools, or medicine. On the contrary, they are all small changes, changes in how we study or practice that we can apply individually, in our own lives, right now. The hardest part in doing so may be trusting that they work. That requires a break from disbelief because this research challenges everything we’ve been told about how to learn best. Consider the popular advice to seek out a “quiet place” and make that a dedicated(专用) study area. This seems beyond obvious. It’s easier to concentrate without noise, and settling in at the same desk is a signal to the brain that says “it’s time to work”. Yet we work more effectively, scientists have found, when we continually change our study routines and give up any “dedicated space” in favor of varied locations. Sticking to one learning routine, in other words, slows us down. Moreover, studies find that the brain picks up patterns more efficiently when presented with a mixed bag of related tasks than when it’s force-fed just one, no matter the age of the student or the subject area. The science of learning casts a different light on the growing alarm over distraction and our addiction to digital media. Distractions can of course disturb some kinds of learning, such as reading, in particular when concentration or continued attention is needed. Yet we now know that a brief distraction can help when we’re stuck on a math problem or tied up in a creative knot (结) and need to shake it off. In short, it is not that there is a right way or wrong way to learn. It’s that there are different strategies, each uniquely suited to catching a particular type of information. A good hunter tailors the trap to the prey(猎物). 32. What’s the author’s greatest worry about the new discovery of learning techniques? A. They remain unknown to the public. B. Learners will doubt their effectiveness. C. Learners will benefit little from them. D. They originate from smarter secrets. 33. Which of the following do researchers probably think can help us study? A. Focusing on a single task. B. Having a fixed study place. C. Depending on digital media. D. Making a flexible study schedule. 34. What does the author mean by saying “A good hunter tailors the trap to the prey” in paragraph 4? A. Learning strategies develop with time. B. Each learning strategy has its disadvantages. C. Choosing proper learning strategies matters. D. Mastering various learning strategies always wins. 35. What does the text mainly talk about? A. Some strategies for fast learning. B. Some surprising facts about learning methods. C. Some new findings about humans’ brain activity. D. Some discoveries in learning assistance technologies. Remember that it’s okay to be imperfect—it’s a natural part of personal growth. Embracing imperfections can lead to greater self-acceptance and happiness. 36 ) ●Rethink your mistakes. View unsatisfying results as valuable learning experiences, not failures. 37 Try to gain something from a mistake, whether it is a deeper understanding on a certain thing or a comprehensive outlook in the long term. And you can have better adaptability through the process. ●Practice self-compassion (自我同情). Be warm towards yourself when it comes to pain and personal shortcomings, rather than ignoring them or hurting yourself with self-criticism. 38 Acknowledge your efforts and recognize that making mistakes is acceptable. And allowing yourself to take your time in a period doesn’t mean you are worse or lower than others. ●Develop a growth mindset. 39 This is a long-lasting way to help you improve. You will have a clearer idea of what to do and not to do for next similar occasions. Realize that skills and abilities can be achieved through efforts and perseverance, which is good for greater advancement. ● 40 Providing what you need for your own health or protection is not about being selfish. Actively following these schedules can also develop a sense of balance, peace and calm. Therefore, when an uncontrollable accident happens one day, you will be more ready to react with a better body condition. A. Build a habit of self-care. B. Start a regular workout schedule. C. Given your interest in Chinese history and culture, I highly recommend Beijing as your destination. Here is a suggested 3-day plan. You can start with Tian’anmen Square and then admire the Forbidden City, a magnificent palace for over 500 years which is also known as a “Chinese Treasure House.” The following day, take a high-speed train to explore and be amazed by China’s ancient defense systems—the breathtaking Great Wall. Finally, a relaxing walk through traditional Beijing Hutong will help you fully experience the local culture. I believe this trip will be a memorable experience for your family. Feel free to ask if you need help. Wishing you all a fantastic journey in China. Text 1 M: I’m a bit worried. I heard there were bears in this forest. W: Don’t be silly. There aren’t bears. There aren’t any tigers either. What you really need to worry about are the flies because they’re really annoying! (1) Text 2 M: What do you think is the best thing about working from home? Saving the trip to the workplace? W: No, it’s arranging my schedule more freely! (2) But I do enjoy seeing people in the office. Text 3 W: Do you know the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, Annie Ernaux? I read one of her books The Years lately. That’s so well-written! M: Of course. This book has sold out online. She is always able to shock people with simple words. That’s typical of her writing style. (3) Text 4 M: I was going to see the art show at the museum yesterday afternoon, but I heard it was closed. W: That’s a pity. So you went to the shopping center then? M: No, I went to the zoo instead. (4) But I’m going to the museum now. Text 5 W: Oh, God! Sir, that was a terrible fall. Can I help you up? M: Please, don’t bother. I just need some air. Please, keep the people around away from me. (5) W: Sorry, sir. Let me know if you need help. Text 6 W: I can barely keep my eyes open. (6) M: Me too. (6) We should have gone to bed earlier last night. W: I know, but the film we watched was so good. It was a shame we didn’t get to see the end. (7) M: But we’ve stayed up late two nights in a row. W: Oh, yes. The night before that was your friend’s party! We went to bed even later that night! M: Well, there’s no party and no film tonight. I’ll make us a nice cup of hot chocolate later, and then we go to sleep straight off! Text 7 M: The hotel is lovely, isn’t it?Hopefully, the clouds will clear by this afternoon. (9) I’m not into rainy days like yesterday. W: Yeah, I love this hotel by the sea. If the sun comes out, it will make this view even more special. M: True, the view is wonderful. I’m glad we picked a room with an ocean view. W: How about going for a walk along the beach after breakfast? (10) You can bring your camera to take some pictures. M: Lovely. We’ll make many pleasant memories here. W: Of course! Come on, let’s go downstairs to the restaurant. (10) Text 8 W: How much more wood do we need to light the fire? M: We’ve got ten big bits of wood already. That’s more than enough to keep the fire going through the night. W: How about smaller sticks to start the fire? M: Good point. Could you find some of those? W: How many? M: Eight will be fine.(11) You can find lots of sticks on the forest floor over there. W: Okay. Once we’ve made the fire, I’ll cook some food. M: Excellent, I’m really hungry. (12) The nine-mile hike during the day was so hard! W: I know. Especially when going up all those mountains. M: I was worried we wouldn’t make it to the last one! W: So was I. My leg was really hurting then. Anyway, here are the sticks. Let’s light the fire.(13) Text 9 M: I’m worried that kids these days don’t know much about our cultural heritage(文化遗产). (15) W: Really? But China’s cultural heritage is all around us. Kids regularly go to museums and places of interest to learn about it. M: Well, I just asked my class if any of them had heard of shadow puppetry(皮影戏), and only one student had. (15) W: I suppose, in an age of TVs, films, and video games, I understand why many may not be aware of it. M: When I was growing up, we would go see shadow puppet shows. I loved how they projected the figures on a screen to bring the stories to life. It really stuck with me. W: Maybe we can put on our own shadow puppet show to tell students about the history of the art form. (16) M: That’s a great idea. We can explain how it was started during the Han Dynasty and why it’s important to keep these traditional art forms alive. W: Great. Let’s meet for a coffee after school to discuss it. Text 10 This is an important message for all passengers heading out of London… (18) Because of the bad weather, a number of train journeys are running late and some have been canceled. These include all train journeys heading north and east. The heavy snow falling on the tracks could cause great safety risks. (17) So our rail workers are trying hard to clear them. But the snow is expected to last for hours. The service will return to normal once the snow cleaning is done. Strong winds in the west of London have also blown trees down. This has caused many power cuts. The only train journeys that are still running are the ones heading to the south of the city. (18) But they may also be canceled if the weather gets any worse. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause. Sadly, this is out of our control. I wish everyone a safe journey home. If anyone wants to change the schedule, please head to the ticket counter. 根据 El Calafate, Argentina 部分的 “buses leave El Calafate for the Perito Moreno glacier — an easily reachable ice formation and one of the few advancing glaciers in the world” 可知,卡拉法特之旅的核心亮点在于能观赏到莫雷诺这处罕见的推进式冰川,也就是移动的冰川。 22.A。 根据 Futaleufú, Chile 部分的 “You wipe your eyes and enjoy the warm sun while the Northern Hemisphere is in deep winter” 可知,在富塔莱乌富漂流时能享受温暖阳光,且此时北半球正值隆冬。 根据 Punta Tombo, Argentina 部分的 “nearly a million Magellanic penguins...makes a strong impression. The long, thin island also brings in gulls, flightless steamer ducks” 可知,通博角有近百万只麦哲伦企鹅,还能看到海鸥、不能飞的蒸汽鸭等动物,是非常适合喜欢观察动物的人前往的景点。 根据第一段“...lock their smartphones in a cabinet and stop all Internet use for the next two weeks.” 根据第二段 “When the time came to power down, many students were eager to be free of their phones, while others held onto their phones and their emotions seemed to range from worry (“How will I talk with my friends?”) to expectation (“I can’t wait to read more books.”).” 26. A。 根据第三段 “I use these moments to replay a difficult conversation until I know where it went wrong, imagine myself living abroad, or stare at a person sitting nearby and invent the story of her life.” 27. A。 根据最后一段“...most of them left the classroom with screens still dark...” 根据第一段 “humans tend to run at a speed that saves caloric loss—something that racers seeking to increase their speed will have to get over.” 根据第三段“We had thought that people ran faster for shorter distances and then would slow their pace for longer distances”可知,研究团队原先认为人们会“根据不同距离调整速度”。 30. A。 第四段提到“...there are some tricks runners can use.”“listening to faster-paced music or running with faster partners helps speed up”,说明提及“音乐”和“伙伴”是为了“提供提速的建议”。 31. B。 根据最后一段Hicks的话“...better understand how to improve physical activity and health...” 根据第一段 “The hardest part in doing so may be trusting that they work. That requires a break from disbelief because this research challenges everything we’ve been told about how to learn best.” 33. D。推断。根据第二段 “Yet we work more effectively, scientists have found, when we continually change our study routines and give up any ‘dedicated space’ in favor of varied locations.” 以及 “Sticking to one learning routine, in other words, slows us down.” 文章最后一句 “A good hunter tailors the trap to the prey.” 结合前文 “It’s that there are different strategies, each uniquely suited to catching a particular type of information.” 文章开篇即指出 “researchers have uncovered... a host of techniques that deepen learning but remain largely unknown outside scientific circles” 研究人员发现了一系列能深化学习但大多不为人知的技术,并随后介绍了多个挑战传统认知的学习发现,如变换学习环境、混合练习、适度分心的好处等。 下文强调 “skills and abilities can be achieved through efforts and perseverance”(技能与能力可通过努力和坚持获得),这一结果的前提是 “主动学习” 的行为。 40. A。 41.
