The following are some examples of 15-minute cities. Melbourne, Australia Melbourne, Australia’s fastest-growing city, is working to ensure it continues to meet the needs of its communities and futureproof its services and facilities. This won’t be without its challenges. Melbourne is one of the largest cities by land area in the world, and one that has already well-established city facilities that will need to be improved and updated. Shanghai, China It’s not just in the West and Australia that the governments and cities have committed to the fifteen-minute model. Shanghai became the first Chinese city to adopt this urban planning approach, in an attempt to fight its fast growth. By 2035, the city plans to have 99% of public service facilities accessible within 15 minutes’ walking distance, and 90% of green space accessible within five minutes. Milan, Italy Milan is often regarded as the model for how to put this planning model into practice, alongside Paris and Barcelona. According to research by Nature Cities, a “universal framework for 15-minute cities”, residents can expect a journey of less than 10 minutes to access their needs in the majority of the city. Barcelona, Spain Barcelona is viewed by many as the model for a 15-minute city. Work is already underway to improve its walkways and cycle lanes, and digital twins — digital replicas (复制) of systems and environments — are being used to help simulate how planning and structure changes will impact the city. 1. What challenge does Melbourne face when building a 15-minute city? A. Limiting its city population. B. Updating its city facilities. C. Locating itself on water area. D. Rebuilding a sense of community. 2. Why does Shanghai commit to the 15-minute model? A. To increase its green space. B. To encourage citizens to do walking. C. To try to cope with its rapid spreading. D. To compete with other international cities. 3. What do Milan and Barcelona have in common in building a 15-minute city? A. They value environmental protection. B. They set good examples for other cities. C. More advanced walkways are being built. D. Residents can explore them in 10 minutes. B For many, Olympic success is defined by gold, silver, and bronze. But author Doug Levy challenges that idea in his new book, Hero Redefined: Profiles of Olympic Athletes Under the Radar. Levy, who grew up on both the East and West Coasts, understands the power of different perspectives. His book, released on Jan. 28, profiles thirteen Olympic athletes from six continents, sharing their battles against injury, adversity (逆境) and even other factors. His research focused on competitors who didn’t necessarily win medals but demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and sportsmanship. “I’ve always loved the Olympics,” Levy said. “But I’ve felt we only get part of the picture of what truly happens. We focus so much on the medalists — who absolutely deserve it — that we miss the deeper, often more heroic journeys happening behind the scenes.” Among the featured stories is that of Manteo Mitchell, who finished his relay race despite breaking his leg halfway, and Gabriela Andersen Schiess and John Stephen Akhwari, whose determination carried them to the finish line in marathons against all odds. The book also explores the broader impact of the Olympics, with two additional chapters dedicated to the efforts behind bringing and restoring Olympic venues. It also challenges traditional definitions of heroism, urging readers to reconsider what it means to be a true role model. “True heroes don’t seek attention or applause,” Levy said. “They just do what they believe is right, whether it’s on the Olympic stage or in everyday life — like teachers, healthcare workers, and delivery drivers who kept the world running during the pandemic.” Levy acknowledged that some readers may question his choice of athletes, but he hopes the book inspires people to look beyond medals when considering an athlete’s legacy. As the Paris 2024 Olympics fade into memory and the world looks ahead to the 2026 Winter Games, Hero Redefined offers a fresh perspective on what it truly means to compete on the world’s biggest stage. For more information, visit http://www.authordouglevy.com. 4. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. Levy’s insight of Olympic spirit. B. The release of Levy’s latest book. C. Levy’s life experience in America. D. The traditional description of medalists. 5. Why does the author mention the athletes in Paragraph 3? A. To define a concept. B. To share some hints. C. To lead in a new topic. D. To introduce some examples. 6. What does the underlined word “acknowledged” in Paragraph 5 mean? A. Admitted. B. Suspected. C. Promised. D. Realized. 7. Where is the text probably taken from? A. A science magazine. B. A travel blog. C. A sports ad. D. An online newspaper. C A new study gives “funny or die” a whole new meaning. Published in April in the journal Psychosomatic Medicine, the research found that women with a strong sense of humor tend to live longer — even when they get sick, especially from heart disease or infections. For men, having a joyful personality also helped protect against infections. Norwegian researchers followed 53,556 women and men over 15 years. They wanted to see if a sense of humor could affect how long people live. The team used a detailed questionnaire to measure different parts of humor — like how people think, socialize, and feel about funny situations. They then looked at deaths from several diseases, including heart disease, infections, cancer, and lung disease. The results showed that women who scored high in the “thinking” part of humor had: ·A 48% lower risk of dying from any cause, ·A 73% lower risk of dying from heart disease, ·And an 83% lower risk of dying from infections. For men, the benefit was only seen in infections — those with high humor scores had a 74% lower risk of dying from them. Researchers think this difference between men and women might be because men’s sense of humor slightly decreased as they got older. Also, the social and emotional parts of humor didn’t show any clear effect on how long people lived. According to Sven Svebak, a professor who co-authored the study, the thinking part of humor is a stable personality trait (特性). It affects how people understand everyday events. This can help reduce social conflicts and stress and prevent stress hormones like cortisol(皮质醇) from rising too much. When cortisol stays high for a long time, it weakens the immune system. Although genes partly decide our sense of humor, it’s also shaped by life experiences. Svebak says children who don’t see adults using humor to deal with problems may not use it themselves when they grow up. But don’t worry if your childhood wasn’t filled with laughter — studies show it’s never too late to learn to laugh at life’s absurdities (荒谬). 8. How did the researchers carry out their study? A. By assigning tasks. B. By doing an interview. C. By doing field research. D. By designing questions. 9. Which part of humor has clearly affected people’s life according to the study? A. The social part. B. The cultural part. C. The thinking part. D. The emotional part. 10. What can be inferred about our sense of humor according to Svebak? A. Genes alone play a key role. B. It can be acquired when we grow up. C. It must be developed since childhood. D. It is rarely shaped by life experiences. 11. What can be a suitable title for the text? A. Laugh Lots, Live Longer B. Art of Growing Young C. The Best Medicine for Us D. Be Funny or Die Young D We often have a strong desire to feel listened to and understood. And when we don’t feel like our point-of-view is being heard, we can quickly become lonely, sad, frustrated, or even angry. This is one of the biggest contributors to conflict in our relationships and society as a whole. A recent study published in the journal of Experimental Social Psychology looked into this phenomenon. They studied the tension between Palestinians and Israelis, as well as Mexican immigrants and white Arizonians. What they found was that when individuals were given a chance to share their stories and experiences with people from the other side, it helped improve their attitude about the “opposing group”. This effect was even stronger when it was a member of the “disempowered group” being heard by someone from the “dominant (主导的) group”. Disempowered groups often feel like their voice isn’t being heard. They think their values and needs aren’t being considered, and whether in real cases or tests, this can cause anger toward the more dominant group, who often has more of a stronghold over public debate. However, when the dominant group makes an effort to hear things from another point-of-view, the disempowered group begins to feel that their values and needs are being listened to. This can be a great starting point for easing conflict and tension. There has been a lot of research showing the positive benefits of perspective-taking in our relationships. This is one of the first studies to show that “perspective giving” — the opportunity to share our experiences with others — can be just as helpful in building stronger relationships. However, researchers don’t recommend that the disempowered group does all the talking. Instead, they believe that this is evidence that each group should have an equal opportunity to share their viewpoints. When we don’t have chances to express ourselves, it can often lead to negative consequences for everyone involved. Being heard is important to both ourselves and others. It’s a part of healthy communication, and it leads to solutions we won’t find if we just ignore one another. 12. What phenomenon does the author point out in Paragraph 1? A. We can easily form our own point-of-view. B. Conflict often occurs in our daily relationships. C. We often fail to bring our feelings under control. D Our relationship will be hurt when we feel ignored. 13. How did the researchers draw their conclusion in terms of conflict and tension? A. By making assumptions. B. By surveying public opinions. C. By studying decades of historical records. D. By conducting experiments and observations. 14. Which can be helpful in strengthening relationships according to the study? A Having a debate in public. B. Doing all the talking to be heard. C. Getting a chance to share viewpoints. D. Forcing views of one’s own on others. 15. What is the passage mainly about? A. The power of being heard. B. Some tips about winning respect. C. The importance of voicing your attitude. D. The suggestions on how to communicate. Tips to Help You See the Bright Side of Life If you struggle to see the bright side of life, you’re not alone — many people struggle to look past life’s negative moments to see the more positive aspects of their situations. ____16____. We invited a mix of our friends and her own, wanting to celebrate this milestone with everyone who mattered. I had spent days preparing all of her favorite foods, while my husband’s task was to be the master of ceremonies and ensure the mood was light and joyful. The house was filled with laughter and conversation. Everything seemed to be going perfectly. There was, however, one thing I hadn’t fully planned for: my father, a man of few but weighty words. He had never quite approved of Sarah’s choice to study art history. He believed a “practical degree” was the only path to success. My plan was to have my husband give a short, heartfelt toast (祝酒), avoiding any possible embarrassment. I had even gently reminded my father beforehand that this was a day for celebration, not debate. He had simply grunted (嘟哝) in response, which I took as agreement. The toast was going beautifully. My husband was speaking about Sarah’s passion and determination when my father, glass in hand, stood up unexpectedly. “I’d like to add something,” he announced. My heart sank. What followed was a long speech about “the real world” and “finding a proper job”, which cast a visible shadow over Sarah’s face. The joyful atmosphere in the room grew tense and quiet. It was a deeply uncomfortable moment. I couldn’t let him ruin Sarah’s achievement, yet I didn’t want to publicly embarrass my elderly father. I quickly stepped in, thanked him, and guided the conversation back to the cake. He sat down, unhappy, and spent the rest of the party in stony silence. He left soon after without saying a proper goodbye. A week went by, and I hadn’t heard from him. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Instead of another phone call, I decided to bridge the gap differently. _______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 高二英语试题 注意事项: 1. How much is the shirt? Could you tell me what aspects we should focus on, like the person’s achievements, personality or the challenges they faced? Also, I wonder if there are any particular books we should choose from. Another thing is the deadline. When should we hand in the report? I hope it won’t be too soon as I need some time to prepare. Thank you for your understanding and help! One possible version: A week went by, and I hadn’t heard from him. I called, hoping to smooth things over, but his reply was curt: “I see where I’m not wanted.” I was stunned. From my perspective, I had protected my daughter on her special day. However, over the next few days, my initial defensiveness gave way to reflection. His awkward speech, I realized, wasn’t meant to hurt Sarah, but was his clumsy way of expressing concern for her future. Instead of another phone call, I decided to bridge the gap differently. The following weekend, I took Sarah to visit him at his home. She spent the next hour walking him through her research on art preservation, explaining how it combined her love for art with valuable historical science — a truly practical application. As he slowly turned the pages of her work, his stern expression softened into one of genuine interest. Then, he did something he rarely did — he apologized. “I’m sorry Sarah. I am proud of you.” Sometimes, the most important toasts are the unspoken ones of forgiveness and the quiet willingness to see each other in a new light.
