Over the years, it had grown into two shops with 11 workers, but Allamby had become uneasy, longing for something more. Therefore, at the age of 34, he decided to go for his bachelor’s degree in business management. After taking classes part-time over the next five years, Allamby was told he had to take biology to get his degree, which later turned out to be the best thing that ever happened. Biology classes reawakened a childhood dream that he had hidden somewhere deep within himself. Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed (医学预科的) path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd (讨厌的人),” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead. But a different Carl Allamby walked into that biology class at age 39. He was ready to live his dream. With the support of his family he soon decided to skip business school to take science classes. Becoming a doctor was late and he would become a nurse instead, he reasoned. But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him “Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way.” The professor was right and Allamby did very well. In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General. “How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life?” he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.” 24. Why was taking biology “the best thing that ever happened” to Allamby? A. It ensured him a bachelor’s degree. B. It developed his potential to become a doctor. C. It brought about positive transition in his life. D. It satisfied his childhood curiosity about doctors. 25. What is the author’s purpose in writing Para. 3? A. To describe Allamby’s difficulty in school. B. To introduce Allamby’s family background. C. To explain why Allamby once gave up his dream. D. To show how Allamby struggled in his childhood. 26. What do we know from the chemistry professor’s words? A. He appreciated Allamby’s courage. B. He recognized Allamby’s capability. C. He suggested Allamby should aim lower. D. He thought Allamby was too old to be a doctor. 27. What does Allamby’s story mainly tell us? A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Education holds the key to success. C. A tough man can bear great suffering. D. It’s never too late to pursue your dream. C 25. C 26. B 27. 根据第五段“In 2015, Allamby cut ties with his past, and then he started at Northeast Ohio Medical University. In 2019, Carl Allamby became Carl Allamby, MD. He took a job in emergency medicine at Cleveland Clinic Akron General.(在2015年,Allamby与他的过去断绝了联系,然后他开始在东北俄亥俄医科大学工作。2019年,Carl Allamby成为Carl Allamby医学博士。他在克利夫兰诊所阿克伦总医院找到了一份急诊医学工作)”可推知,学生物学对Allamby来说是“发生过的最好的事情”是因为这给他的生活带来了积极的转变。故选C项。 【25题详解】 推理判断题。根据第三段“Born in East Cleveland, Ohio, Allamby was raised by his stay-at-home mother and a father who sold home goods door-to-door. His school didn’t offer the advanced science classes that might have led him on a premed path. Even if it had, doing well in school could prove dangerous. “You could get into a lot of trouble just for being the class nerd,” Allamby said. So he set aside the thoughts of becoming a doctor and started fixing cars instead.(Allamby出生在俄亥俄州的东克利夫兰,他的母亲是全职主妇,父亲是挨家挨户推销家居用品的。他的学校没有提供可能让他走上医学预科之路的高级科学课程。即便如此,在学校表现良好也可能是危险的。“如果你只是班里的书呆子,你可能会惹上很多麻烦,”Allamby说。所以他把当医生的念头搁在一边,开始修车)”可推知,作者写第3段的目的是来解释为什么Allamby曾经放弃了他的梦想。故选C项。 【26题详解】 细节理解题。根据第四段中“But Allamby’s chemistry professor told him ”Why not a doctor? You have a great talent for the work. You will go a long way.” 根据最后一段““How many people can do something so brand-new at such a late stage in their life?” he said. “My age and past career are all good reasons why I shouldn’t be here. And yet, here I am.”(“有多少人能在生命的晚期做一些如此全新的事情?” C Final exams are around the corner - but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least effort. This may be because their brains aren’t developed enough to properly assess how high the stakes (利害关系) are, and adapt their behaviour accordingly. Catherine Insel, at Harvard University, and her team asked adolescents between the ages of 13 and 20 to play a game while monitoring their brains. In some rounds of the game, participants could earn 20 cents for a correct response, while an incorrect one would cost them 10 cents. But in rounds with higher stakes, correct responses were worth a dollar, and wrong answers lost the participants 50 cents. The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t - their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. And the older the volunteers were, the more improved their performance was. When the team looked at the brain activity of the volunteers, they found that their ability to improve their performance was linked to how developed their brains were. A region in the brain, which continues to develop until we are at least 25 years old, seemed to be particularly important. The findings explain why some teenagers are so unconcerned when it comes to hazardous behaviors. They are much likely to drive dangerously, for instance, especially when one of their friends is nearby. Insel thinks schools should reconsider the way they test performance in teenagers. “This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year. It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example. 28. Why did the researchers set different bets in the game? A. To meet the needs of different participants. B. To create the varied risk levels of the game. C. To better monitor participants’ brains. D. To teach how to make money. 29. What does the underlined word “hazardous” probably mean? A. Addictive. B. Abusive. C. Risky. D. Specific. 30. What should be kept in mind while assessing students’ performance? A. Examination is not a good means of evaluating students. B. The items in exams should not be too difficult. C. It should not be judged by only one exam. D. Exam-focused education should not be adopted. 31. What is Insel’s attitude to teenagers’ putting effort into “unimportant” tasks? A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Favorable. B 29. C 30. C 31. 根据第三段“The team found that while the older volunteers performed better in the high stakes rounds, the younger ones didn’t - their performance didn’t change in line with whether the stakes were low or high. 根据划线词后面的举例“They are much likely to drive dangerously, for instance (例如,他们更有可能危险驾驶)”可知,一些青少年对危险行为如此漠不关心。 根据倒数第二段““This study suggests it’s not a good idea to evaluate school performance in a single final exam”, she says. A better idea would be to use a variety of smaller tests, conducted throughout the year. 根据最后一段“It’s not all bad news for teens, though. Teenagers put the same amount of effort into tasks that aren’t “important”, and start to prefer hobbies to school. It could be a good thing, allowing teenagers to learn complex social skills, for example. D。 D The problem of robocalls has gotten so bad that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don’t know. By next year, half of the calls we receive will be scams (欺诈). We are finally waking up to the severity of the problem by supporting and developing a group of tools, apps and approaches intended to prevent scammers from getting through. Unfortunately, it’s too little, too late. By the time these “solutions” (解决方案) become widely available, scammers will have moved onto cleverer means. In the near future, it’s not just going to be the number you see on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voice you’re hearing is actually real. That’s because there are a number of powerful voice manipulation (处理) and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use. At this year’s I/O Conference, a company showed a new voice technology able to produce such a convincing human-sounding voice that it was able to speak to a receptionist and book a reservation without detection. These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse. The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches (数据泄露) of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother’s name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they’re able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people. This means, for example, that a scammer could call you from what looks to be a familiar number and talk to you using a voice that sounds exactly like your bank teller’s, tricking you into “confirming” your address, mother’s name, and card number. Scammers follow money, so companies will be the worst hit. A lot of business is still done over the phone, and much of it is based on trust and existing relationships. Voice manipulation technologies may weaken that gradually. We need to deal with the insecure nature of our telecom networks. Phone carriers and consumers need to work together to find ways of determining and communicating what is real. That might mean either developing a uniform way to mark videos and images, showing when and who they were made by, or abandoning phone calls altogether and moving towards data-based communications — using a apps like FaceTime or WhatsApp, which can be tied to your identity. Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out. 32. Taking advantage of the new technologies, scammers can . A. spread information widely B. damage databases easily C. start campaigns rapidly D. aim at targets precisely 33. What does the passage imply? A. Honesty is the best policy. B. Technologies can be double-edged. C. There are more solutions than problems. D. Credibility holds the key to development. 34. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage? A. Where the Problem of Robocalls Is Rooted B. Who Is to Blame for the Problem of Robocalls C. Why Robocalls Are About to Get More Dangerous D. How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of Technology 【答案】32. D 33. B 34. 根据第三段中“The reason that robocalls are a headache has less to do with amount than precision. A decade of data breaches (数据泄露) of personal information has led to a situation where scammers can easily learn your mother’s name, and far more. Armed with this knowledge, they’re able to carry out individually targeted campaigns to cheat people.(自动语音呼叫之所以令人头疼,与其说是因为数量庞大,不如说是因为精准度高。 根据第二段中“That’s because there are a number of powerful voice manipulation (处理) and automation technologies that are about to become widely available for anyone to use.(这是因为,一系列强大的语音处理和自动化技术即将普及,任何人都可以使用)”第三段中“These developments are likely to make our current problems with robocalls much worse.(这些发展可能会使我们目前自动语音电话的问题更加严重)”以及最后一段中“Credibility is hard to earn but easy to lose, and the problem is only going to get harder from here on out.(信誉很难赢得,但很容易失去,而且问题只会越来越难解决)”可知,科技既带来了便利,也带来了问题,即科技是一把双刃剑。 通读全文,尤其是根据第一段中“In the near future, it’s not just going to be the number you see on your screen that will be in doubt. Soon you will also question whether the voice you’re hearing is actually real.(在不久的将来,你看到的屏幕上的号码将不只是受到质疑。 由此可知,“Why Robocalls Are About to Get More Dangerous(为何自动语音电话即将变得更加危险)”适合作本文最佳标题。 The Art of Slow Reading If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written. And if you are reading this online, you may not even finish a fifth. ____35____ They suggest that many of us no longer have the concentration to read articles through to their conclusion. So are we getting stupider? Actually, our online habits are damaging the mental power we need to process and understand textual information. Round-the-clock news makes us read from one article to the next without necessarily engaging fully with any of the content. Our reading is frequently interrupted by the noise of the latest email and we are now absorbing short bursts of words on Twitter and Facebook more regularly than longer texts. ____36____ But we are gradually forgetting how to sit back, think carefully, and relate all the facts to each other. ____37____ A desperate bunch of academics want us to take our time while reading, and re-reading. They ask us to switch off our computers every so often and rediscover both the joy of personal engagement with printed texts, and the ability to process them fully. What's to be done then? Most slow readers realize that total rejection of the web is extremely unrealistic. They feel that getaway from technology for a while is the answer. ____38____ Personally, I'm not sure whether I could ever go offline for long. Even while writing this article, I am switching constantly between sites, skimming too often, absorbing too little. Internet reading has become too rooted in my daily life for me to change. I read essays and articles not in hard copy but as PDFs. I suspect that many readers are in a similar position. ____39____ You can download a computer application called Freedom, which allows you to read in peace by cutting off your Internet connection. Or if you want to avoid being disturbed by the Internet, you could always download offline reader Instapaper for your iPhone. If you're still reading my article, that is slow reading. A. The Internet is probably part of the problem. B. Now some campaigns are advocating slow reading. C. These are the two findings from the recent research projects. D. But if you just occasionally want to read more slowly, help is at hand. E. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week. F. Slow reading can help connect a reader to neighborhood and become popular. G. Because of the Internet, we have become very good at collecting information. C 36. G 37. B 38. E 39. Some of them have suggested turning their computers off for one day a week.(他们中的一些人建议每周把电脑关掉一天。) They can be rich resources to improve your knowledge.”,该选项中凭空多出一个代词they,这说明什么问题? 往文中一找,前面的语境是“Volunteering brings together all kinds of people.所以they替代的就是前文的all kinds of people短语。 (come up with) In the 1960s, ________ 【答案】a group of cycling fans came up with an idea 【解析】 【详解】考查短语和时态。主语“一群自行车爱好者”用a group of cycling fans表达,谓语“想出”用come up with表达,句子陈述过去发生的事情,应用一般过去时,come用过去式came,宾语“一个主意”用an idea表达。故填a group of cycling fans came up with an idea。 41. (recommend) ________ simplified classic literature. I recommend that you (should) try 【解析】 【详解】考查虚拟语气。“推荐”使用动词recommend,“你尝试阅读简化版的经典文学作品”译为宾语从句,使用虚拟语气,谓语部分使用“(should)+动词原形”,should可省略,“尝试”使用动词try,从句结构、意义完整,应用连接词that引导,句子描述一般性事实,使用一般现在时,故填I recommend that you (should) try。 42. (cut back on)(汉译英) _______________________________________________________________________ 【答案】It is important to cut back on the use of plastic bags in daily life. It is important to do sth.,it作形式主语;表示“减少”短语为cut back on;表示“塑料袋使用”为the use of plastic bags;表示“在日常生活中”为in daily life。 It is important to cut back on the use of plastic bags in daily life. 43. (pour...into...)(汉译英) _________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】He let me pour some fuel into the rocket. 主语“他”为he,“让我”用let me,后接不带to不定式,表示“把燃料倒进火箭”为pour some fuel into the rocket。 He let me pour some fuel into the rocket. 44. (take up)(汉译英) _________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】We would (will) not take up too much of your time. 主语是we,“不会”用would not(语气更委婉)或will not,其后接动词原形构成谓语,“占用”用动词短语take up表达,宾语“你太多时间”用 too much of your time表达。 We would (will) not take up too much of your time. 45. (have access to) The thing about being a teacher is that________when they are open and eager to learn. 【答案】you have access to children’s minds 【解析】 【详解】考查固定短语。 故填you have access to children’s minds。 Dear Professor Jim, ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Yours faithfully, Li Hua 【答案】Dear Professor Jim, I’m Li Hua, a student from Grade Two of our school. B Carl Allamby started his car repair business at the tender age of 19. C Final exams are around the corner - but that won’t stop some teenagers putting in the least effort. A. Doubtful. B. Negative. C. Unclear. D. Favorable. D The problem of robocalls has gotten so bad that many people now refuse to pick up calls from numbers they don’t know. How Robocalls Are Affecting the World of Technology The Art of Slow Reading If you are reading this article in print, chances are that you will only get through half of what I have written.
