基础语篇巩固练
①In a marathon, have you ever seen some special runners holding signs with different finish times? They are marathon pacers (马拉松速配员), also known as “rabbits”. They are usually experienced volunteers who guide a group of runners at a set speed.
②Their work is to help others finish the race within their goal time. Usually, there are between 10 and 15 pacers in a marathon. Each of them leads a different pace group. Many runners achieve their best finish times with pacers’ help.
③Pacers play an important part in a marathon. Firstly, they help runners save energy and avoid slowing down. For example, if you go out too fast in the first half of the race, you will run out of energy quickly and slow down in the second half. With a pacer, you don’t have to think too hard about your pace. You just need to keep up with your pacer. Besides, during the hardest part of the race, pacers give runners support by encouraging the runners to keep going.
④It’s not easy to be a marathon pacer. Take Li Jun as an example. He began his marathon journey in 2015. Then he became an active runner. Before he became a pacer, he had not only achieved many good results but also got rich experience in running. In 2018, he became a pacer for the first time, leading a group of runners towards a goal time of 3 hours and 30 minutes. “I want to help more people achieve their goals.” Li Jun said. Since then, he has continued to serve as a pacer in many marathons, becoming a guide and inspiration (激励) for many runners.
⑤Pacers are the real heroes of the marathon. They teach us that with courage and support, everyone can overcome (克服) challenges and reach their dreams.

The power of Teamwork in Sports
Sports are a great way to learn about teamwork. Whether it’s a basketball game, a soccer match, or a relay race, working together as a team is essential for success.
Take basketball, for example. A basketball team has five players on the court. Each player has a different role: the point guard controls the ball and sets up plays, the shooting guard scores points, the small forward is versatile and can do many things, the power forward rebounds and defends, and the center is tall and blocks shots. If each player only thinks about their own performance, the team will not do well. But if they pass the ball to each other, help defend, and work together, they have a better chance of winning.
In a relay race, teamwork is even more important. Each runner has to pass a baton to the next runner. If the pass is not smooth, the team might lose the race. So, the runners practice passing the baton again and again until they can do it perfectly. They also support each other, cheering each other on during the race.
Soccer is another sport where teamwork is key. The players have to communicate with each other on the field, telling each other where the opponents are and where to pass the ball. They have to trust each other, knowing that their teammates will be there to help. A single player can’t win a soccer game alone; it takes the whole team working together.
Teamwork in sports teaches us many important lessons. It teaches us to communicate with others, to trust our teammates, and to work towards a common goal. It also teaches us that winning is not everything; what’s important is how we play the game and how we support each other.
So, the next time you watch or play a sport, remember the power of teamwork. It’s what makes a good team great.

2.How many players are there on the court in a basketball team?

Team spirit means the willingness of people to work together and help each other as part of a team. With this spirit, people try hard to make their team the best of all. Everyone has experienced team spirit one way or another, whether they were part of a team or saw a group of people cheer for their favourite player.
There are different kinds of team spirit. One kind is the connection between a team of people because their efforts and cooperation (合作) are necessary in reaching a particular goal. One kind is when a group of people support a person or a team. Another is people’s natural love for and pride in their country, when a whole nation cheers for its country in competitions. Team spirit can also be seen in the workplace or in some activities.
Team spirit creates various good effects. It creates friendship and trust between people who may not get along when they don’t have such team spirit. There may also be bad effects. Too much team spirit may cause arguments or fights with other team members.
Some people don’t understand team spirit properly. They think team spirit means having to become an official member of an organization, team or fan club. Working out (锻炼) through online videos
Physical exercise is good for our mind, body and spirit. Today, working out through online videos is becoming very popular. Since the Internet is widely used, it’s very easy for us to do so. That means we can work out anytime anywhere.
One of my friends, Lin Fei followed short workout videos to do daily exercise. “With live programs, I feel like working out with my friends, which encourages me to hold on to the last minute,” she said. Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that workout videos let him feel so comfortable. “I have a fear of working out at the gym because I don’t like being watched by others. Working out at home makes working out much more enjoyable.” he said.
With their examples, I decided to give it a try. When I told my plan to my elder sister, a PE. teacher, she reminded me that workout videos could be helpful but might still carry some problems.
“Without being with someone in person, you will be less willing (愿意的) to work out to your best. Working out at the gym allows you to have advice in real time and get pushed harder.” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try. First, choose proper programs or videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. Their experiences can give you a good sight into what you can expect. Anyway, don’t be addicted (沉迷的) to it. You should try different ways to work out to be healthy.”
At her suggestions, I finally followed an online workout program with personalized (个性化的) help that is held for three months. After the first period of training, I thought it very helpful when I put in the right amount (量) of work along with a strong will. The 1st Student (Youth) Games held its rock climbing competition from Nov. 8 to 11. The host Guangxi became the biggest winner in climbing, winning three golds, three silvers and one bronze (铜牌). All the medalists were from Mashan county in Nanning.
Mashan county was once poor because of its mountainous environment. But it has given the local climbers an advantage. Many students climb mountains and trees from an early age, building strong physical fitness. Among them is 15-year-old Huang Xinyi, who won the women’s speed climbing championship.
In 2017, the first “rock climbing characteristic town” in China was set up in Mashan county. “To bring the sport closer to more students, 23 primary and middle schools in the county have climbing spaces, and each school has one rock climbing class each week,” Huang Xujin, head of Mashan county’s Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Sports and Tourism, told Teens. “A group of professional climbers, including coaches from the national climbing team and excellent climbing athletes, have been hired to guide athletes in the school,” he added.
Huang Xinyi used to love climbing tees. When she was in the 5th grade of primary school, she became interested in rock climbing and decided to take part. At school, she usually trains from 6:30 to 9:00 in the evening.
For her, climbing is a window to a wider world. “Because of climbing, I stepped out of the mountains for the first time. Competing with climbers across the country helps me become a better athlete. I hope I can achieve even greater results in more countries,” she told Teens.
Mashan county has also set up a special educational pathway (路径) for children with skills in rock climbing. “Students with good rock climbing skills can directly enter the best middle school in the county,” Huang Xujin said.
1.How many medals did Guangxi win in the rock climbing competition?
2.What advantage does the mountainous environment give many students?

During China’s May Day holiday this year, Jiang Xiaojuan and her husband took a special trip from Urumqi to Xiamen. They flew about 3,500 kilometres by plane, not just for fun but to enjoy their favourite sport—badminton. There are many great places to play badminton in Xiamen. After they arrived, they joined a group and played three matches.
From April 27 to May 4, Xiamen held the 2025 Sudirman Cup. It was a big badminton event (赛事). “Winning the final means so much to us fans,” Jiang said outside the stadium (体育场) shortly after cheering for China’s win in the final. For her, mixing (结合) sports with travel is a perfect way to relax. It’s good for both the body and the mind.
The city also added other interesting activities outside the sports fields. They made the tourists’ travel experiences more enjoyable.
As more and more young people live a healthy life, Chinese cities are using sports events to attract (吸引) more visitors. It’s also a great way to share their culture.
For example, at Jilin’s Chagan Lake, two exciting events happened at the same time: a 10-km marathon (马拉松) and a kite festival. When runners enjoyed their race, they could also see villages full of local culture. This let them learn more about the place.
Tourists today care more about new experiences than buying things. Sports travel brings them together and creates special moments. It also helps small places get more visitors. This great mix is making sports trips healthy, enjoyable, and full of surprises.
1.What did Jiang and her husband go to Xiamen mainly for?
2.How did Jiang probably feel about the trip to Xiamen?

The Jiangsu Football City League, also called Su Chao, has become a big hit on the Chinese Internet. Many interesting slogans (口号) like “No cheating, just real rivalries” and “Game first, friendship fourteenth” show how exciting the match is!
Organized by the Jiangsu sports department and 13 city governments, the league encourages everyone to join and play for their city’s honor. It started on May 10 and will end on Nov 2. There are 516 players from 13 teams, including students, professional players, and many amateurs (业余爱好者) aged 16 to 40. Matches mostly happen on weekends, with one round each week. Some cities offer free gifts to attract visiting fans. For example, Suqian gives free tickets to tourist spots and local snacks.
Journalist Wu talked about why this league is different. He said that in China, people usually copy big leagues from other countries because they love the World Cup so much. But Jiangsu did something new.
“Here, players are not famous stars getting paid a lot of money. They’re just common people you might know. The fans aren’t just strangers—they’re your family, friends, and neighbors. The soccer field isn’t just for professional players—it’s a place where everyone feels welcome,” Wu explained. “This league isn’t about being the best in the world. It’s about getting as many local people involved as possible. And that’s even better because it makes soccer a part of everyday life. Now, each city will have its own special soccer stories to remember.”

Compared with going to the gym, using online videos to work out is a much cheaper and time-saving choice. But it can be difficult sometimes when I’m too lazy or too busy to stick to it.
1.Which way to work out is becoming very popular today?
2.Why does Michael dislike working out at the gym?
3.What will happen to you without someone else in person?
4.What did the writer think about his first period of training?
5.Do you want to follow online videos to work out? Why or why not?
