Without hesitation, I took out a wide-mouthed mug, put the lettuce stub into it, added some water, and then set it near the window. On a snowy morning, I spotted the first sign of life. A small leaf began to stretch out from its center, like a tiny green flag of hope — beaten, yet not defeated. Within just a few days, the cuts where I had removed the leaves were no longer visible; the growth was incredibly rapid. When I lifted the blossoming head out of the mug, tiny root threads fell down, reaching for the soil. Lettuce or hope? Put in the lettuce’s position, I’d likely be doubtful initially, carefully sizing up my new environment before wholeheartedly diving into the process of growing. But this lettuce didn’t need much — just a bit of water and a place near the window is enough to decide it was going to thrive again. It grew in a mug of water, in faith. This is the heart of this lettuce: alive, strong and fearless. It deserved a name .I decided to call it Monty. Monty wanted to grow, as we all do. I think I gave him a little love and freedom. Those two ingredients were all he needed to return to himself. I see joy in this lettuce. The return to self is always an expression of joy, which is life itself. With the right ingredients, this is the tendency of all living things. Monty still lives in a mug, but I’m going to transplant him outside. He deserves to become his full self. The only problem I see now is my capacity to support Monty. I hope I have enough of a green finger. I’m surprised to find myself where I am. Maybe Monty is, too. I have the same choice as he does: give in and decay (腐烂),or start again. The prospect of starting again is discouraging. But my lettuce-friend, Monty, leads the way. I can only hope to be as brave. 4. Why did the author put the stub in water? A. To hope that it would grow. B. To decorate the nice mug C. To conduct an experiment. D. To remove his bad mood. 5. What is the first sign of life in the author’s eyes? A. The remaining stub. B. The small leaf. C. The disappearing cuts. D. The tiny root threads. 6. How would the author feel if in the lettuce’s situation? A. Hesitant. B. Fearless. C. Confident. D. Annoyed. 7. Which can be a suitable title of the passage? A. Enjoy your own life to the fullest. B. Believe in yourself when in trouble. C. Never be afraid to restart yourself. D. Give freedom to the heart in a way. C For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do? Both sides want peace, but neither feels it has any power to stop the conflict. In part, this is because neither is willing to admit any responsibility for starting it. From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. And of course, the teens see it in exactly the same way, except oppositely. Both feel trapped. In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap. The first no win situation is quarrels over unimportant things. Examples include the colour of the teen’s hair, the cleanliness of the bedroom, the preferred style of clothing, the child’s failure to eat a good breakfast before school, or his tendency to sleep until noon on the weekends. Second, blaming. The goal of a blaming battle is to make the other admit that his bad attitude is the reason why everything goes wrong. Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect. Unfortunately, as long as parents and teens continue to assume that they know more than the other, they’ll continue to fight these battles forever and never make any real progress. 8. Why does the author compare the parent teen war to a border conflict? A. Both can continue for generations. B. Both are about where to draw the line. C. Neither has any clear winner. D. Neither can be put to an end. 9. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 2 mean? A. The teens accuse their parents of misleading them. B. The teens blame their parents for starting the conflict. C. The teens tend to have a full understanding of their parents. D. The teens agree with their parents on the cause of the conflict. 10. Why do parents and teens want to be right? A. To give orders to the other. B. To know more than the other. C. To gain respect from the other. D. To get the other to behave properly. 11. What will the author most probably discuss in the paragraph that follows? A. Solutions to the parent teen problems. B. Examples of the parent teen war. C. Causes of the parent teen conflicts. D. Future of the parent teen relationship. D New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems. A study conducted by researchers from the UK’s Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities. Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at them. Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners. Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences. While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning. 12. What is the text centred on? A. Why Asian children are better at math test. B. Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn. C. How learning Chinese benefits our cognition. D. How Chinese writing differs from English writing. 13. What does the study by UK’s Wellcome Trust show? A. English speakers should learn Chinese. B. Chinese has more intonations than English. C. Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity. D. Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult. 14. Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems? A. They need quite different cognitive abilities. B. Chinese writing looks like math symbols. C. Chinese children naturally do well in math. D. They share several key cognitive abilities. 15. How is the text mainly developed? A. By offering supporting findings. B. By comparing former research. C. By discussing problems and solutions. D. By listing advantages and disadvantages. How many times have you shrunk yourself because you fear being judged? To tell the truth, I often struggle to get along with him. Recently we have argued with each other a great deal. He is anxious about his skin because it has started to become very oily, with lots of red spots. He is always angry these days and seems less confident. I keep telling him that these changes are normal, and that things will turn out just fine. Of course, I wanted to show my concern for his condition, so I asked him to see a doctor. But then he became angry and we had a big argument. He told me that I was putting even more stress on him. In the end, I sent him to his room. He finally calmed down, but it took some time. The whole experience was really terrible and I do not want to go through the same thing again. What should I do? __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第二节(满分 25 分) 47. My friend Avery and I tried out for Alice in Wonderland several weeks ago. Avery really hoped she could get picked to be Alice. I said, “You’d make a great Alice! I don’t care what part I get as long as I’m in it.” Then she asked, “So you’d be happy to have a small part like the Dormouse?” I replied, “Exactly!” A few days later, Avery and I raced over to the theatre office, where the director had posted the cast list. “Wow!” said Avery. “You got the part of Alice and I got the part of the March Hare.” “That can’t be right,” I said. “There must be some mistake!” But I was really given the part of Alice. The reason why I’d done well during the audition (试镜) was that I was not nervous at all, because I had never thought I could get the major role. I asked her if she wanted to practise our lines after school. Avery responded, “You mean practise your lines? No, thanks. I’m busy this week.” “OK. How about someday next week?” I asked. “Sorry,” she whispered, “I’m sure I’m busy forever.” That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt about it. “Well, I’m confused,” I said. “Avery was so upset that I was picked to be Alice. She threw away our friendship.” “Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend?” said my dad. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (嫉妒的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. I guess she’ll come around before long.” Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Our play ended up going great. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 2025-2026 学年度第一学期期中质量调研 高一年级 英语试题 2025年11月 第1卷(选择题) 第一部分 听力(共两节,满分30分) 第一节 听下面5段对话。 1. 4. A 5. B 6. A 7. I can only hope to be as brave.(我惊讶地发现自己竟身处这般境地。 C。 C For many parents, raising a teenager is like fighting a long war, but years go by without any clear winner. B 9. B 10. C 11. 根据第一段的“Like a border conflict between neighbouring countries, the parent teen war is about boundaries: Where is the line between what I control and what you do?(就像邻国之间的边境冲突一样,父母与青少年之间的战争是关于界限的:在我能控制的事情和你所做的事情之间的界限在哪里呢?)” 根据第二段的“From the parents’ point of view, the only cause of their fight is their adolescents’ complete unreasonableness. 根据第三段的“Third, needing to be right. It doesn’t matter what the topic is — politics, the laws of physics, or the proper way to break an egg — the point of these arguments is to prove that you are right and the other person is wrong, for both wish to be considered an authority — someone who actually knows something —and therefore to command respect.(第三,需要证明自己是对的。 根据第三段的“In this article, I’ll describe three no win situations that commonly arise between teens and parents and then suggest some ways out of the trap.(在这篇文章中,我将描述三种通常出现在青少年和父母之间的两败俱伤的情况,然后提出一些摆脱困境的方法)”以及后面描述了三种情况可知,接下来作者很可能会讨论解决父母与青少年问题的方法。故选A。 D New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems. 12. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Dear Reader, I understand the struggle you’re facing with your teenage son. It’s common for parents and teens to have conflicts during these years of change. Firstly, try to listen more and advise less. His anger might stem from feeling misunderstood. Acknowledge his feelings and assure him that oily skin and spots are temporary. You could buy him some gentle skincare products instead. Secondly, choose calm moments for open conversations. Show trust in his ability to handle this. I hope these suggestions help ease the tension. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. Then one day, I approached her. “I know you didn’t exactly love the idea of being the March Hare, but you’re such a talented actress, and the way you say your lines is great.” “Thanks,” said Avery happily, with a big smile on her face. “Well,” I said, “I’m still struggling with a few things about my character. I’d love your help if you have any free time this week.” She smiled. “I might be free on Thursday.” And we practised carefully and passionately on Thursday. Our play ended up going great. We had so much fun, and the audience loved the perfect show. They broke into loud applause. And even though things were rough for a little while with Avery and me, they’re better than ever now! She even apologized for the way she acted at first. And I’ve learned an important lesson from this experience. Give your teammate a little time and understanding, and he or she just might come around before too long. 词汇激活 行为类 ①走近:approach/come near to ②玩得开心:have fun/enjoy oneself ③道歉:apology/make an apology 情绪类 ①高兴地:happily/delightedly ②热情地:passionately/with passion 【点睛】[高分句型1] I’d love your help if you have any free time this week.(由从属连词if引导的条件状语从句) [高分句型2] And even though things were rough for a little while with Avery and me, they’re better than ever now!(由even though引导让步状语从句) [高分句型3] She even apologized for the way she acted at first.(省略关系词的定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
