Imagine a potter(陶工), sitting quietly on a small chair, holding soft clay(黏土) in his hands, sculpting it as he spins the pottery wheel. The clay’s fate is completely in the potter’s hands. A skilled potter would turn it into a beautiful container but the same clay, when handed to a green hand, may be ruined.
Just as the potter shapes clay into containers, our lives are shaped by the hands of our surroundings — the people we meet, the places we go, each conversation and every experience shape us into who we are.
Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the top 5 people you spend your most time with.” Now think about the company you keep — the ones who share your joys, wipe tears away and share your dreams. Every part of you is nothing but their average.
Back in middle school, most of my classmates didn’t quite match my level of intellect (智力). More often than not, I stood out from them; although it felt really satisfying, it somehow lacked the challenge I desired. It wasn’t until I started high school that I found what I was searching for.
High school did feel frightening at first. I found myself surrounded by brighter, wiser and prettier faces than I ever imagined. I felt inadequate compared to them, but it was in that discomfort that I found growth.
To grow, you got to be with people who stand out in areas where you fall short, those who inspire you to learn and improve. Just as tough competition pushes athletes to stand out, great people bring out the best in you. So, find your people, people who’ll inspire and uplift you, who have qualities you want. They wouldn’t simply hand you success but force you to lift yourself higher and higher.
But if negativity surrounds you, don’t expect positive changes in your life. If you’re always with people who see nothing but reasons why things can’t be done, then that will also become your reality.
4. What does the author compare our surroundings to?
A. The potter. B. The clay. C. The pottery wheel. D. The container.
5. Which of the following best describes the author’s high school?
A. Dull. B. Painful. C. Rewarding. D. Thrilling.
6. Who does the author suggest readers be with in order to grow?
A. People who motivate them to advance.
B. People who match their level of intellect.
C. People who work in the same area as they do.
D. People who share happiness and sorrow with them.
7. What is the message conveyed in the text?
A. Toughness leads to success. B. Positivity outweighs hard work.
C. Birds of a feather gather together. D. Success loves a successful company.
C
How good are you at maths? Some people love the challenge of algebra (代数) or enjoy working out number puzzles. Maths is all around us, from working out how to split (分摊) the bill after a meal to calculating (计算) your household bills. But many dread the moment they have to deal with numbers and figures, and feel a real sense of worry and confusion. It can seem depressing, but this “maths anxiety (焦虑)” is perfectly normal, and you’re definitely not alone.
Research traces maths anxiety back to school experiences. Nervous teachers may unintentionally pass their fears to students. Data from 34 countries reveals striking numbers: 31% of teens feel nervous about solving problems, 33% stress over homework, and nearly 60% fear complex (复杂的) classes. Shulamit Kahn, a Boston University expert, argues that positive role models — especially female teachers — are critical to building confidence in young learners.
Writing for BBC Future, David Robson says, “It’s not clear why maths causes so much fear compared to geography. But the fact that there’s only one correct answer — there’s no room for bluffing — might make you more worried about underperforming (表现不佳). And once we suppose we’re not a ‘maths person’, we avoid solving things that we probably could do.”
The seed of maths anxiety may come from many sources, but some experts suggest that expressing our fears can loosen their hold on us and we should encourage children to see a maths test as a challenge, not a threat. In fact, we need to think positively about maths and give it a second chance.
8. What doesn’t lead to students’ maths anxiety according to paragraph 2?
A. Personal character. B. Homework stress.
C. Complex classes. D. Nervous teachers.
9. What does the underlined word “bluffing” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Stopping to solve the problem.
B. Shouting to express maths anxiety.
C. Acting like you know the answer.
D. Copying answers from others secretly.
10. What can we do to reduce maths anxiety according to the experts?
A. Avoid difficult maths tests.
B Voice our fears and try again.
C. Start with simple maths problems.
D. Forget it and move on to harder problems.
11. What is the author’s main purpose in writing this text?
A. To prove maths is harder than geography.
B. To blame teachers for causing math anxiety.
C. To stress biological reasons for maths anxiety.
D. To explain maths anxiety and provide solutions.
D
In today’s digital age, there exists a phenomenon (现象) where excessive learning can lead to inaction, a state of being overwhelmed by too much information.
Consider a situation where you’re eager to achieve a particular goal. You begin by conducting extensive research, diving deep into the subject. As you take in more information, it paradoxically (矛盾地) feels like your understanding weakens. Each new concept (理念) or strategy reveals further layers, making the goal seem more complex and out of reach.
This situation is a common trap: the endless pursuit (追求) of more information. Although there’s nothing wrong with learning a lot, issues arise when this effort gets in the way of practical application. If learning continuously prevents you from starting, you’ll find yourself stuck, unable to achieve your desired outcomes.
An alternative and more effective approach to achieving goals is to strike a balance between learning and doing. Gather essential information, then jump into action rapidly, even if you feel somewhat unprepared. This is often the best way to learn, as hands-on experience provides insights that theoretical (理论的) knowledge alone cannot.
The comparison with a baby learning to walk is a good example here. A baby doesn’t learn to walk by sitting and analyzing the process. Instead, it learns by attempting to walk, falling, and then understanding from each fall what works and what doesn’t. Through repeated effort, walking is eventually grasped. This method is applicable to goal achievement too. By taking action, learning from the outcomes, and adjusting accordingly, you gradually move closer to your goals.
In summary, while the pursuit of knowledge is valuable, it’s important not to let it become a barrier to action. Learning should be a stepping stone to doing, not an end in itself. It’s through the interplay of gathering knowledge and applying it that we can truly progress towards our ambitions.
12. What stops people from achieving the goal?
A. The distraction caused by unrelated tasks.
B. The inability to find related information.
C. The confusion caused by the information.
D. The desire to learn basic concept or strategy.
13. What does the author try to advocate in paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Sticking to continuous learning. B. Taking practical action without delay.
C. Gaining as much knowledge as possible. D. Focusing on theoretical knowledge in study.
14. Why is the example “baby learning to walk” mentioned in Paragraph 5?
A. To compare different learning styles.
B. To show the importance of making mistakes.
C. To stress the need for parental guidance.
D. To illustrate learning through action and experience.
15. What makes the best title for the passage?
A. The Balance of Learning and Doing. B. The Process of Accessing Information.
C. The Pursuit of Advanced Knowledge. D. The Significance of Hands-on Experience.

Children are natural scientists. They ask big questions, notice tiny details, and learn best through hands-on exploration. ___16___ From growing seeds to using the sun’s energy, students don’t just learn science, they experience it. Here are my favorite go-to nature experiments that spark curiosity.
Grow a bean in a cup
___17___ I typically use this activity to reinforce our botany (植物学) lessons on plant parts and the life cycle of a plant, giving students a concrete, visual way to connect what they’ve learned in class to real plant growth. To try this experiment yourself, you’ll need clear plastic cups, damp paper towels, and bean seeds.
Students put the paper towels into their cups, followed by the seeds, and then the magic happens. ___18___ I encourage students to check on their seeds, using measuring tapes to track growth and sketching anything new they notice. While most students’ seeds will grow quickly, it is a good idea to have backup cups just in case, so that no students feel left out.
Watch the water cycle in a bag
When I taught fifth grade, one of the most eye-opening experiments we did during our weather unit was the water cycle in a bag. I used it to bring vocabulary like evaporation (蒸发) and condensation (冷凝) to life. ___19___ To set it up, you’ll need zip-top plastic bags, water, permanent markers, and a few drops of blue food coloring for a clear visual effect.
Students start by drawing the sun, clouds, and a body of water on their bags with markers. Then they add water, seal the bags, and tape them to a sunny window. Over time, they watch water evaporate, condense, and “rain” inside the bag. I ask students to make daily observations using key vocabulary. ___20___
A. Within days, roots and shoots appear.
B. Students start by tearing leaves into small pieces.
C. For extra support, I model sentences or provide starters.
D. That’s why nature experiments hold a significant place in my teaching.
E. I use this experiment with my fourth and fifth graders during our lessons.
F. This activity lets students see these processes happening right before their eyes.
G. One of my favorite science experiments in fourth grade is growing beans in a cup.

Honesty Strengthening the Friendship
Linda complained, “I can’t believe Ms. Carter gave us another essay due Friday,” turning to face Clara, who was busy tucking (塞) a note into her notebook. Clara looked up, with her eyes lighting up with that familiar eagerness Linda had come to both rely on and dislike. “I know! But maybe we could work on it together? My mom’s making pizzas tonight-you could stay over.”
Linda hesitated. The truth was she’d already promised her cousin to go shopping, but the thought of disappointing Clara made her feel guilty. “Oh, I can’t,” she lied. “I have to look after my little brother. He’s got a fever.” Clara’s forehead creased (皱眉), “Oh no! Is he okay? Do you need me to bring over soup or something? My grandma is good at making chicken soup.” “No, he’ll be fine,” Linda replied, hurrying toward the exit. She didn’t miss the way Clara’s smile gradually disappeared as she walked away.
It wasn’t the first time. Last month, when Clara had tearfully expressed she was struggling with her parents’ breaking up, Linda had nodded along without really paying attention, checking her phone for texts from the popular crowd. When Clara had noticed and asked if something was wrong, Linda had lied her battery was dying-even though she’d just charged it that morning.
Today, as Linda went shopping with her cousin, her phone made a noise. It was a message from Clara. “Hey, I just wanted to say I made more soup than needed. Tell me if you want me to bring some over.” Nervous and guilty, Linda typed, “Thanks, but my dad already got food to take home. Maybe another time?” Then she turned off her phone and forced a laugh as her cousin held up a fashionable sweater.
At night, Linda thought about the empty soup pot in Clara’s kitchen. She’d always brushed off Clara’s kindness with half-hearted lies. A heavy feeling settled in her chest.

Badminton VS skipping rope
As for which sport is suitable for the break-time, I strongly recommend badminton as the ideal break-time activity over skipping rope. My choice is based on several key advantages.
Firstly, badminton fosters valuable social interaction. It requires a partner, encouraging students to play together, communicate, and build teamwork during the short break, turning exercise into a shared, enjoyable social experience. Secondly, badminton is highly adaptable. You don’t need a full court; any small open space, even a hallway, suffices for a quick rally. It offers fun, fitness, and friendship efficiently within the break-time limit.

【答案】 Linda didn’t know whether she should apologize to Clara. The lies felt like weights in her stomach-each one like a sharp reminder of how she’d taken Clara’s kindness for granted. What if Clara refused to forgive her? The thought of losing the only person who’d always been there even when Linda was too busy chasing popularity to notice Clara’s kindness, made her chest achy. But she knew she couldn’t keep hiding behind half-truths. Clara deserved honesty, even if she might be hurt.
At dawn, she headed to Clara’s house, hands shaking. When Clara opened the door, her eyes were soft. Linda’s throat tightened. “I’m sorry,” she whispered with her voice breaking. “About the essay, about your mom…about everything. I lied because I was scared of disappointing you, but I only made it worse.” Clara stepped aside, silent. She said finally, “I’m just glad you told me the truth. That’s all that matters.” Upon hearing the words, Linda hugged Clara with tears blurring the view. Suddenly, she came to realize that some lies fade away but honesty can deepen their friendship.
