August Lamm, a writer, artist and former art influencer, hasn’t owned a smartphone since 2022. Her journey to give up the smartphone began shortly after graduating from college, when she started posting pictures of her art online and got hundreds of thousands of followers. “Everything that I shared online — about my love life or my vacations or my house — all these pictures and words were feeding into my business so they would result in sales,” Lamm said. Finally, she said, the pressure to keep that up became too much, and she reached a breaking point.
At first, Lamm tried to put her phone in a drawer and didn’t look at it for a whole day, which she said “was very inconvenient to everyone in my life”. It took her about a year to quit her smartphone and fully devote herself to the dumbphone lifestyle, which offers only basic calling and texting.
Still, there are certain things that may feel impossible to navigate without smartphones, since they are more than just texting and surfing social media. In 2025, these smartphones function as virtual wallets, health trackers, identification tools, and even personal assistants. However, Lamm has found solutions to the challenges. “You work out these problems by asking,” Lamm said, “like asking the parking company if they can give you another choice when you can’t use parking meter (计时器), and a lot of the time they will”.
When it comes to her career, Lamm says she earns more money now than she ever did as an influencer online. That’s because now she only does the actual work, rather than spending hours and hours crafting posts. “When I stopped posting, I found out income sources that existed before social media: agencies, magazines, galleries, publishers,” she said. “If I hadn’t spent thousands of hours trying to build a following, I could have spent that time going to galleries, taking classes, meeting people, making connections, organizing events, submitting to exhibitions and otherwise making a name for myself in the real world. I could have improved more quickly if I had not arranged online visibility above creative development.”
4. What made August Lamm decide to give up the smartphone?
A. The sense of duty to help her followers. B. Her addiction to the smartphone.
C. Her pressure from the busy college life. D. The anxiety from social networking.
5. Why does the author mention the situations in 2025 in paragraph 3?
A. To explain people can live well without smartphones.
B. To stress the difficulty of solutions to phone addiction.
C. To give the fact that people are often distracted by phones.
D. To state the close connection between man and smartphones.
6. How can we best describe August Lamm according to the text?
A. Strict and hard-working. B. Determined and adaptable.
C. Fashionable and knowledgeable. D. Generous and kind-hearted.
7. What message does August Lamm want to express in the last paragraph?
A. Social media do more harm than good. B. Dumbphones are making a comeback.
C. One can be less dependent on social media. D. Use smartphones only when necessary.

One of the top sources of added sugar in children’s diets in America is in their breakfast cereal (麦片). A study published in the American Journal of Preventive Medicine shows that advertising drives sales of high-sugar cereals when it’s aimed directly at kids under 12 — but not when it is designed for adults.
In the study, researchers looked at all cereals bought by 77,000 U.S. households over a nine-year period, between 2008 and 2017. They also looked at Nielsen ratings data, which closely tracked all the ads that people in a household saw — both children and adults. The study showed a clear connection: more ads for children led to more sugary cereal being bought by families. But ads for adults did not lead to more buying. And these extensive data also showed that behaviors that were learned in childhood could track into adulthood, which could lead to poor health outcomes over a lifetime.
The study is the first to directly compare the influence of food ads aimed at children with those aimed at adults. The findings offer new evidence of how food marketing turns children into the “final weapon” in influencing family spending because they continuously ask their parents to buy an idea known as “pester power”.
The food industry started the Children’s Food and Beverage Advertising Initiative, a voluntary effort to police itself. The 21 participating food companies made a promise to cut back on marketing unhealthy foods to children under 12 — later revised to under 13. A new study conducted in 2024 showed that children’s contact with cereal ads on TV programming has dropped sharply.
But Lindsay Smith Taillie, a food policy researcher at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, says these voluntary efforts aren’t making a difference. Advertisements, like kids’ eyeballs, are moving online, making it even harder to know what marketing children are shown, Taillie notes.
8 What mainly drives children to buy sugary cereal?
A. Nutritional value promotion. B. Family breakfast traditions.
C. Kid-focused marketing strategies. D. Adult-centered advertisements.
9. What does the underlined phrase “pester power” in paragraph 3 mean?
A Parents’ unconditional love. B. Children’s uncontrolled spending.
C. Parents’ growing spending. D. Children’s repeated buying requests.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. An expectation for further study. B. A limitation of the research method.
C The follow-up influence of the study. D. The potential application of the findings.
11. What is Taillie’s attitude toward the voluntary efforts?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain.
D
When Eugenie George first heard that her friend passed an exam, her heart sank. She’d failed that test weeks earlier, and needed more work to advance her own career. But instead of anxiety, she called her friend. “I congratulated her and told her she inspired me,” she says. She was surprised when it changed her attitude, so she could share her friend’s happiness and experience her own, in turn.
Finding pleasure in another person’s good fortune is what social scientists call freudenfreude, a term that describes the joy we feel when someone else succeeds, even if it isn’t directly connected with us. Freudenfreude is like social glue, says Catherine Chambliss, a professor of psychology at Ursinus College in Pennsylvania. It makes relationships “closer and more enjoyable”. Sharing in someone else’s joy can also improve life satisfaction and resilience(适应力) and help people cooperate during a disagreement.
While the benefits of freudenfreude are plentiful, it doesn’t always come easily. Sometimes, your loss might last, making freudenfreude feel out of reach. If you were raised in a family that paired winning with self-worth, Chambliss says, you might misread someone else’s victory as your own personal shortcoming. And factors such as mental health and overall wellbeing(幸福) can also affect your ability to participate in someone else’s joy. Still, freudenfreude is worthwhile and there are ways to encourage the feeling.
Instead of an automatic response, freudenfreude is often an active process. To help people strengthen joy-sharing muscles, Chambliss and her colleagues developed a programme called FreudenfreudeEnhancement Training (FET). They found that depressed people who used the practices for two weeks had an easier time expressing freudenfreude, which built up their relationships and improved their mood.
Jean Grae, an artist, supports friends in this mindset. When someone gets a new opportunity or reaches a milestone, she makes sure to celebrate. Grae says she’s especially moved when anyone considered ‘other’ succeeds. “It’s truly inspirational,” she says, “because it lifts us all up and makes us shine.”
12. What do we know about Eugenie George?
A. She took pride in passing her exam. B. She shared her success with her friend.
C. She was pleased with her friend’s success. D. She was annoyed at her failure in an exam.
13. What does paragraph 3 mainly focus on about freudenfreude?
A. Its great benefits. B. Its disadvantages.
C. Reasons for its absence. D. Ways of improving it.
14. Why is Freudenfreude Enhancement Training (FET) held?
A. To test the effect of freudenfreude. B. To help people apply freudenfreude.
C. To get people to know freudenfreude. D. To show the advantages of freudenfreude.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. How to experience freudenfreude?
B. Let’s share what leads to freudenfreude.
C. Freudenfreude: View others’ success as our own.
D. A win-win: Freudenfreude brings our own pleasure.

【答案】4. D 5. D 6. B 7. C

8. What mainly drives children to buy sugary cereal?
A. Nutritional value promotion. B. Family breakfast traditions.
C. Kid-focused marketing strategies. D. Adult-centered advertisements.
9. What does the underlined phrase “pester power” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Parents’ unconditional love. B. Children’s uncontrolled spending.
C. Parents’ growing spending. D. Children’s repeated buying requests.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. An expectation for further study. B. A limitation of the research method.
C. The follow-up influence of the study. D. The potential application of the findings.
11. What is Taillie’s attitude toward the voluntary efforts?
A. Negative. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Uncertain.

I’m sorry to hear about your recent health struggles. It’s completely understandable to feel frustrated when your body doesn’t seem to cooperate, so I’d like to offer some advice that might help.
Firstly, prioritize a balanced and nutritious diet. Make a conscious effort to include more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains in your meals, as they are packed with essential vitamins and minerals that help boost the immune system. Moreover, it is strongly recommended that you establish a sustainable exercise routine, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling. Whatever activity you choose, make sure to work out at least 30 minutes every day, which will not only build your physical strength but also relieve stress and uplift your mood. Last but not least, you’d better ensure adequate and high-quality sleep. Only when you secure seven to eight hours of uninterrupted rest each night can your body fully repair itself.
