Carl Wilhelm Scheele ranks as one of the greatest scientists of all time, but he paid a big price for this honor.
Born in 1742 in present-day Germany, Scheele learned about chemicals from his parents starting at a young age. When he was 14, he was sent away to Gothenburg (哥德堡) to become the apprentice (学徒) of a family friend. There he spent eight years studying chemistry and conducting experiments late into the night. Next, Scheele moved around the Holy Roman Empire, working for different chemists and becoming more learned in his trade. In 1767, he moved to Stockholm, where he discovered tartaric acid (酒石酸).
After three years in Stockholm, he became the director of the Locke Laboratory. It was there, while he was analyzing a strange reaction, that Scheele became the first person to identify oxygen.
He called the element “fire air” because he believed, based on the theories of his time, that a substance that made up fire was released from items when they burned. Scheele believed oxygen to be this substance, not understanding that oxygen is merely an element that facilitates (促进) the chemical reaction that is fire.
As historic as this discovery was, Scheele seldom got credit for it, largely because English scientist Joseph Priestley published findings on oxygen before Scheele, even though it is now generally accepted that Scheele made the actual discovery first.
Through his work, he thus exposed himself to many harmful materials. These chemicals had a deadly effect on Scheele, and he eventually died of kidney failure in 1786.
Sadly, in spite of his many achievements and the fact that he gave his life to chemistry, Carl Wilhelm Scheele is often forgotten in the history of science. Though he discovered many elements before other better-known scientists did, his unwillingness to both attend meetings of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and to publish his work allowed other scientists to take credit for discoveries that he had made.
4. Who first taught Chemistry to Scheele?
A. His parents. B. Joseph Priestley. C. His family friend. D. The Holy Roman Empire.
5. When did Schele probably discover oxygen?
A. In 1745. B. In 1767. C. In 1770. D. In 1789.
6. What do the underlined words “the element” refer to?
A. Oxygen. B. Tartaric acid. C. The strange reaction. D. The chemical experiment.
7. What can we learn about Scheele from the text?
A. He has been world-famous since the 1700s. B. He actually died due to his dangerous work.
C. He discovered oxygen later than Joseph Priestley. D. He thought his findings were not valuable at all.

Shannon Brescher Shea’s nine-year-old son struggled with focus and following directions at home and at school. But after riding his bike, whether around the park or to school, he felt obviously calmer. “We call it moving meditation (冥想),” says Shea, who is a family biking advocate and author in Maryland. “We saw how extremely helpful biking was for his focus, emotional regulation and ability to follow directions.”
This experience isn’t unique. Research consistently shows that physical activity contributes to improving mental health. “Exercise, no matter your age, is the single best thing you can do for every organ in your body, including your brain,” says Allan Reiss, a professor and director of Brain Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine.
And while any exercise helps a growing body of research shows bicycling is among the activities that might provide even more of a mental health boost. Scientists aren’t yet sure why, but it might have something to do with all the functional skills cyclists use. “You need to maintain your balance and process a lot of information from your environment, like deciding whether you can squeeze past a tree or how hard you need to brake.” says Reiss, “Most importantly, you’ve got to coordinate (协调), sense, process, integrate, regulate, and continually make decisions.”
According to Reiss, “Research suggests that physical activity like cycling likely encourages new cell growth in areas of the brain linked to memory and problem-solving, and can support stronger connections between neurons (神经元), ultimately impacting memory and learning.”
Luckily, it’s not too hard to get on a bike for most people: You should focus on the fun. To ensure riders don’t get tired too quickly (or too bored), build in a fun stop rather than make the ride the single focus. Self-paced exploration and adventure are key to the ride. Cycling can multiply when it becomes a social project. In neighborhoods where bike lanes or other safe-to-ride pathways exist, organizing a group ride with friends might be just the ticket to less stressed, more relaxed individuals.
8. What does the author want to stress using Shea’s son’s example?
A. Advantage of physical exercise regularly.
B. Importance of leading a relaxing lifestyle.
C. Positive effect of riding on mental health.
D. Possibility that any disease can be cured.
9. Why does cycling boost mental health more according to Reiss?
A. It needs repetitive movement to help calm the mind.
B. Its sense of freedom and exploration helps mind grow.
C. It needs better integrated coordination abilities.
D. Its outdoor exposure helps improve the mood state.
10. What is the function of the quoted statement in paragraph 4?
A. Offering suggestions. B. Explaining concepts.
C. Presenting experiments. D. Providing evidence.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Cycling with partners is recommended.
B. Non-stop cycling makes the most of the ride.
C. Purchasing tickets for a group ride is necessary.
D. Bike lane construction is promoted by communities.
【答案】8. C 9. C 10. D 11. A

Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers (制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, “To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what’s around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably.”
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.

A. It can improve the safety of automated vehicles.
B. It can help drivers communicate with each other.
C. It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents.
D. It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.
13. What can we know about the vehicle-generated early warning system?
A. It can get information several miles ahead.
B. It is under research and development at present.
C. It has been proved extremely helpful for driving.
D. It will send messages to drivers a few days earlier.
14. What will be probably continued with the text?
A. Some car manufacturers. B. The advantages when using 5G.
C. Some safety rules when using 5G. D. The sales information of cars with 5G.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. 5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving

Over the past years, countless studies conducted have shown the positive effects that laughing has on one’s physical and mental health. Are you ready to laugh more? Below you’ll find five ways to bring more laughter into your life.
Smile more. Smiling is not laughing. ____16____ When you smile, happy changes begin to take place naturally, both internally and externally. In addition, you can think of smiling as a warm-up for laughing.
Learn to laugh at yourself. Most of us take ourselves too seriously. ____17____ Learning to laugh at yourself takes some of the pressure off. You can look for the funny side of things. When you’re upset about something, ask yourself “How is this situation funny?” Humor can even turn a negative into a positive.
Share stories from the past. Do you remember one time in high school that you and your best friend wore false hair and matching clothes around your neighborhood? Or, how about when your best friend sat on a painted bench by accident? ____18____
Take up something new. When you try something new — whether it’s to draw or learn to roller skate — your original attempts will likely be clumsy (笨拙的) and even ridiculous (荒谬的). ____19____ So taking up something new is likely to result in laughs.
____20____ We are heavily influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can add more laughter into our days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on (感染) us and it can cause us to want to feel happier and sillier throughout our days.
A. That is funny.
B. It has a lot of benefits.
C. Follow funny people on Twitter.
D. Surround yourself with funny people.
E. These reminders can make us feel silly and childlike.
F. For better results, think of a funny moment from the past.
G. So our ability to find the humor in difficult situations can be limited.
【答案】16. B 17. G 18. E 19. A 20. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了五种让你的生活充满欢笑的方法。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Smiling is not laughing.(微笑不是大笑)”以及后文“When you smile, happy changes begin to take place naturally, both internally and externally.(当你微笑时,快乐的变化开始自然发生,无论是内在还是外在)”可知,空处是一个过渡句,起到连接前后文的作用,根据后文句意,可知是在讲微笑的好处,所以B项“It has a lot of benefits.(它有很多好处)”符合文意。故选B项。
【17题详解】
根据本段首句“Learn to laugh at yourself.(学会自嘲)”可知,本段主要讲述不要对自己太严厉,再根据前文“Most of us take ourselves too seriously.(我们大多数人都太把自己当回事了)”以及后文“Learning to laugh at yourself takes some of the pressure off.(学会自嘲可以减轻一些压力)”可知,空处应该是对前句的进一步解释,所以G项“So our ability to find the humor in difficult situations can be limited.(所以我们在困境中找到幽默的能力是有限的)”符合文意。故选G项。
【18题详解】
分析设空,空处位于段尾,应是对本段前文的总结。根据前文“Share stories from the past. Do you remember one time in high school that you and your best friend wore false hair and matching clothes around your neighborhood? Or, how about when your best friend sat on a painted bench by accident?(分享过去的故事。你还记得高中的时候,你和你最好的朋友戴着假发,穿着情侣装在附近闲逛吗?或者,当你最好的朋友不小心坐在一张彩绘的长椅上?)”可知,E项“These reminders can make us feel silly and childlike.(这些提醒会让我们觉得自己又傻又幼稚)”可知是对前文的总结。故选E项。
【19题详解】
根据前文“When you try something new — whether it’s to draw or learn to roller skate — your original attempts will likely be clumsy and even ridiculous.(当你尝试新事物时——无论是画画还是学溜冰——你最初的尝试很可能是笨拙的,甚至是荒谬的)”以及后文“So taking up something new is likely to result in laughs.(所以学习新事物很可能会带来笑声)”可知,空处应该是一个过渡句,所以A项“That is funny.(这很有趣)”中that代指前文提到的最初的尝试的事,符合文意。故选A项。
【20题详解】
分析设空,空处位于段首,应该是本段的中心句,是对本段的高度总结,根据后文“We are heavily influenced by the people we are with, so by hanging out with funny people, we can add more laughter into our days. That positive and silly energy will immediately rub off on us and it can cause us to want to feel happier and sillier throughout our days.(和我们在一起的人对我们的影响很大,所以和有趣的人一起出去玩,我们可以给我们的生活增添更多的笑声。这种积极和愚蠢的能量会立即影响到我们,让我们每天都想要更快乐、更傻)”可知本段主要讲我们身边的人,所以D项“Surround yourself with funny people.(和有趣的人在一起)”符合文意。故选D项。

A. In 1745. B. In 1767. C. In 1770. D. In 1789.

12. What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text?
B. 5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life
C. 5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World
D. 5G Is on the Way to Making “Dialogue” Between Cars
