Every year vaccines (疫苗) save around five million lives globally. Unfortunately, most vaccines need to be kept cool to stop them from going off. This makes it difficult to transport them to remote areas, because if they get too warm they won’t work. This is what Dr Asel Sartbaeva has been attempting to solve.
As a child, Asel Sartbaeva always looked up to scientists like Michael Faraday and Marie Curie. When she studied at Cambridge University, she met an award-winning physicist called Brian Josephson. “My jaw dropped,” she said, “It felt like a ‘big thing’ for me to be working in the same place as scientists I had looked up to for so long.”
In 2010, when taking her daughter to be vaccinated, she noticed the doctor had kept the vaccines in the fridge. Later she found that there were places around the world where vaccines couldn’t be delivered because they couldn’t be refrigerated (冷藏) for the whole journey — meaning some people miss out on getting vaccines. Sartbaeva wanted to invent a way to keep vaccines stable at all temperatures, so she came up with ensilication (硅化法) to improve their stability.
Over the next few years, Sartbaeva and her team have tested out different ways to see if the ensilicated vaccines can be kept stable when they’re out of the fridge. One of these experiments involved sending vaccines in the post from Bath to Newcastle. The journey is more than 300 miles, which can take a day or two by post, but the vaccines were still safe to use when they arrived.
In 2021, Sartbaeva was named a UNICEF Ambassador for Girls in Science Project. She designed experiments to get girls interested in the science-based subjects. “I hope they’ll encourage more girls to work in scientific field because we need more like them. Besides scientific and teaching work, I strive to bridge the gap between scientific innovations and the public, making them more accessible,” she said.
4. How did Sartbaeva feel when she met Brian Josephson?
A. Embarrassed. B. Relieved. C. Scared. D. Honored.
5. What drove Sartbaeva to invent ensilication?
A. Poor quality of vaccines. B. Vaccine instability without refrigeration.
C. Her daughter’s unexpected illness. D. Children’s high demand for vaccines.
6. Why does the author mention the journey in paragraph 4?
A. To show the effectiveness of ensilication.
B. To emphasize the high cost of transportation.
C. To compare different means of transportation.
D. To explain the working principle of ensilication.
7. What can we know about Sartbaeva according to the last paragraph?
A. She encourages girls to be UNICEF Ambassadors.
B. She tries to clear the misunderstanding about women.
C. She aims to popularize science among common people.
D. She thinks females more talented than males in science.
C
The idea that the standard human body temperature is about 37℃ was first presented by the German physician Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich in 1851. Since then, it’s become so widely accepted that it serves as a touchstone for health — a tool used by physicians and parents as a basic indicator of whether someone is sick or well. However, it turns out that this well-established fact isn’t, in fact, correct — or, to put it more accurately, human beings have been getting cooler over the years.
Recent studies have shown that temperature records of groups of people have tended to run low compared to the accepted norm (标准). Therefore, a Stanford team, led by Professor Julie Parsonnet, decided to do a more in-depth study to compare modern measurements with historical records to try to identify body temperature trends and, perhaps, uncover the reason why this cooling is happening.
For their research, the Stanford team looked at three distinct datasets from two historical periods. After going through 677,423 temperature measurements, the team found that men born in the 21st century had an average body temperature of 0.6℃ lower than that of those born in the late 19th century, while women born in the same period showed an average decrease of 0.03℃ compared to those born in the 1890s.
As to why this is happening, the researchers say that the most likely mechanism is a reduction (减少) in the human metabolic rate (代谢率) due to environmental factors. One possibility is that improvements in public health over 200 years have reduced the impact of inflammations (炎症), which promote metabolism. This, combined with people living more comfortable lives in more stable environments, means that the body doesn’t have to work as hard to stay warm, so the average temperature falls.
“The environment that we’re living in has changed. Although we think of human beings as if we have been the same for all of human evolution (演化), we’re not the same. We’re actually changing physiologically,” Parsonnet said.
8. What’s Carl Reinhold August Wunderlich’s achievement?
A. He set up standards for human health services.
B. He first used body temperature as a health signal.
C. He predicted trends in humans’ body temperature.
D. He proposed the standard of human body temperature.
9. What do the Stanford team’s temperature measurements show?
A. Women have a lower body temperature than men.
B. Humans’ body temperature has dropped at a faster rate.
C. Men’s body temperature has fallen faster than that of women.
D. Environmental temperatures have risen since the late 19th century.
10. Which of the following is thought to cause the decrease in human body temperature?
A. The dependence on tools. B. The adaption to climate change.
C. The contact with other animals. D. The improved living conditions.
11. What is the main idea of Parsonnet’s statement in the last paragraph?
A. Humans have stayed biologically the same during evolution.
B. The changed living environment has caused physiological changes in humans.
C. Modern humans’ living environment is much better than ancient people’s.
D. Human evolution has stopped because the current living environment is stable.
D
An ancient Latin proverb says “Aquila non capit muscas” — eagles don’t hunt flies — meaning that important ones shouldn’t concern themselves with small, insignificant matters. But the lions in East Africa should concern themselves with the seemingly insignificant ants, because these ants are changing their lifestyles.
The story starts with the acacia trees (金合欢树) in an African wildlife area in central Kenya. Some of these acacia trees provide food and shelter for specific ant species, which in turn defend the tree against herbivores (食草动物). The ants are actively attacking and driving away herbivores that attempt to feed on the tree’s leaves. This is highly effective; the ants not only physically harm the herbivores but also release chemicals that can deter other potential attackers.
But these ants are in trouble. Another species called the “big-headed” ant is destroying entire groups of tree- protecting ants. This, in turn, sets off an entire chain of events that ends up influencing when and how lions can hunt.
This ant invasion (入侵) affects one thing after another. It leaves the acacia trees defenseless against herbivores especially elephants. The elephants come in and eat the acacias at five to seven times the rate observed in uninvaded areas. The lions, while hunting for food, have no more trees to use for hiding. This reduced tree cover makes lions less successful at hunting and pushes them to find different areas to hunt in.
“These tiny invaders are pulling on the ties that put an African ecosystem (生态系统) together, determining who is eaten and where,” said Todd Palmer, an ecologist from Florida.
The lions, which are already endangered, are managing to cope with this by no longer focusing their attention on zebras. The zebras, of course, can see them much better on the approach given the lack of cover. Instead, they are targeting water buffalo. But this also isn’t the end of the story. Who knows what the lions’ changing strategy will mean for the ecosystem down the line?
12. What does the underlined word “deter” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Direct. B. Discourage. C. Recognize. D. Seek.
13. What role do the elephants play in the chain reaction?
A. Cooperating with “big-headed” ants. B. Damaging the hiding place for lions.
C. Protecting the acacias from herbivores. D. Starting off the disturbance of the chain.
14. What can we infer from Todd Palmer’s words in paragraph 5?
A. Ecologists have found a way to control big-headed ants.
B. The African ecosystem will soon recover from the ant invasion.
C. Only big-headed ants can influence the survival of other species.
D. Big-headed ants have broken the balance of the African ecosystem.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Tiny Ants, Big Impact: Changing the Way Lions Hunt.
B. The Law of Jungle: How Elephants Rule the Ecosystem.
C. Zebras or Buffalo: Lions’ Choice Shift in Food Preference.
D. Ecologists’ New Discovery: Mystery Behind African Acacia Trees.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money.

【答案】Dear Tony,
Truly sorry to learn that you’re feeling down due to communication issues with your parents. Please don’t be too upset as it is a common challenge that many teenagers experience while growing up. I’m writing to show my sincere concern and offer you some suggestions.
First and foremost, it’s a good idea to initiate a calm and honest conversation with your parents. Not only can you express your thoughts and feelings clearly, but you can also listen attentively to their perspective. Besides, you could try to spend more quality time with them, such as having meals together or participating in shared activities, because this can help strengthen your bond and create more opportunities for open communication. What matters most is that you practice empathy and try to see things from their point of view. Only in this way can you build mutual understanding and respect.
Hopefully, my advice would be of benefit to you. Cheer up. Things will get better as long as you keep trying.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

【47题答案】
【答案】 Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money. Hastily, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the completion. After signing up for it, he was given the task. It was his time. He was deeply absorbed in his work, forgetting everything around him. After finishing his task, he went home, with birds singing for him.
