Just as she graduated from college, a financial crisis swept the country, making it hard to get a job in journalism. Despite her growing worries, she didn’t give up on her dream; instead, she tried a global volunteer program for her self-growth. A year later, Green began taking random writing jobs to make ends meet, while dreaming of a day when she could write freely and be paid for it. Afterwards, she applied for the fully funded Master of Fine Arts program, and was accepted to study fiction writing at the University of Michigan. Though the program didn’t end up opening many doors for her, she was paid to write and take classes. Green has never avoided challenging topics. Marriage healthcare, employment and more have featured noticeably in her writing, and she is especially impressive when it comes to music criticism. “I’ve intentionally tried to keep my path very wide,” she said. “It was what I had to do in the beginning. I wanted to become a well-rounded writer.” She penned articles for a variety of websites. Slowly, she began to build a reputation for fearlessness. “I’ve been writing since I was 22. This craft requires that you have a tough skin,” said Green, when asked about her writing journey. “As a writer, you are not well served by caring what other people think about you. You have to be emotionally prepared to face rejection.” In the past decade, Green, lacking many examples to model after, has achieved remarkable success through great effort. She landed regular writing positions, had worked in respected journals, made the Forbes 30 Under 30 list, and wrote a world-class bestseller. By any young journalist’s definition, Green had arrived. 4. What troubled Green upon her graduation? A. Poor academic performance. B. A tough job-hunting situation. C. Lack of writing opportunities. D. Failure in a volunteer program. 5. Why did Green take random writing jobs? A. To realize her dream soon. B. To gain wide recognition. C. To earn a living temporarily. D. To learn different writing styles. 6. What matters most to her career according to Green? A. Handling refusal bravely. B. Maintaining youthful skin. C. Gaining public recognition. D. Writing about her journey. 7. What may be the author’s attitude towards Green? A. Admiring. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Objective. C A humanoid robot can relay video and touch sensations to a person wearing haptic feedback gloves and a virtual reality (VR) headset hundreds of kilometres away, offering a way for people to attend events without travelling. iCub 3 is a 52-kilogram, 125-centimetre-tall robot with 54 points of articulation across its aluminium alloy and plastic body. Its head contains two cameras where a human’s eyes would be, and an Internet-connected computer where the brain would go. Along with the cameras, sensors covering its body transmit the collected information to the robot’s “brain”, which is then replicated on the special gloves and VR headset worn by a remote human operator. When the operator reacts to what they see and feel, the gloves’ sensors pick up the movements and the robot matches them. “The key is to translate every signal and bit of numeric data that can be sent through the network,” says Stefano Dafarra at the Italian Institute of Technology, who was part of the iCub 3 team. There can be a small delay of up to 100 milliseconds to transmit the visual film, but the operator can lessen this by moving slightly slower than normal. The team has demonstrated the robot at the Venice Biennale held in Venice in northeastern Italy, where it wandered through an exhibition while its operator stayed in Genoa, a seaport in northwestern Italy. Dafarra hopes people will use iCub 3 to attend events remotely, reducing the need to travel. But at present, a fall could be hugely damaging to the robot, and it’s uncertain whether it could stand up again on its own, he says. “iCub 3 is an interesting robot and offers clear advantages from the previous version,” says Jonathan Aitken at the University of Sheffield, whose laboratory owns a prior version of the robot. However, he is disappointed that the team isn’t clear in its research about iCub 3’s data transmission requirements. “It will be good to know just how much data is required, and what the upper and lower limits are,” he says. 8. What is the function of the sensors on iCub 3’s body? A. Sending the data. B. Guiding the operator. C. Stopping iCub 3 from falling. D. Supporting the cameras. 9 What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The difficulty in filming. B. The network’s disconnection. C. The late transmission of data. D. The operator’s improper use. 10 Why are Venice and Genoa mentioned in paragraph 4? A. To demonstrate iCub 3’s popularity in the two cities. B. To show iCub 3’s ability to break the distance limit. C. To indicate technology’s threat to tourist destinations. D. To note robots’ wide application in Italian exhibitions. 11. What does Aitken want to know about iCub 3? A The way it captures videos. B. Its process of translating data. C. Its advantages over the prior one. D. The amount of data it requires. D A new study from Nottingham Trent University (NTU) indicates that people who are more facially expressive are generally more likable and socially successful. The research, which analyzed over 1,500 natural conversations, suggests that complex facial muscle movements can strengthen social bonds and improve social interactions. In the initial phase, researchers engaged with 52 participants in video calls designed to get a range of everyday situations, such as humor, embarrassment and conflict. The participants were further challenged to maintain a still face while their partners attempted to stimulate movement, testing their ability to control facial expressions. Following these interactions, the participants recorded short videos, where they aimed to achieve specific social goals, like disagreeing with someone but without being disliked. These clips of videos were then rated by over 170 independent observers, assessing the readability of the emotions and expressions displayed. The researchers applied the Facial Action Coding System (FACS), a method for measuring facial muscle activity, to evaluate each participant’s expressivity (表现能力). Afterwards, the study extended to analyze an existing database of natural video conversations between 1,456 strangers, where the participants rated their conversational partners’ likability. The study revealed that individuals who were more expressive were more likable by both independent observers and their conversation partners. Additionally, these expressive individuals were easier to read and more skillful at using facial behaviors to achieve their social goals. “This is a study to examine facial expression in real-world interactions,” said the study’s lead author, Eithne Kavanagh. “Our evidence shows that facial expressivity is related to positive social outcomes. It suggests that more expressive people are more successful at attracting social partners and building relationships. It also could be important in conflict resolution.” The research highlights the significant role which facial expressions play in successful social interactions. 12. How did the researchers examine the participants’ ability to control facial expressions? A. By asking them to make complex facial muscle movements. B. By asking them to watch humorous videos and keep a still face. C. By having them use facial behaviors to achieve their social goals. D. By having their partners try to make them produce facial movements. 13. What were the participants asked to do after the first stage? A. Rate the videos of other participants. B. Engage in further social interactions. C. Assess the readability of their own emotions. D. Record short videos under specific conditions. 14. What can we learn about the FACS? A. It is a tool to assess facial muscle activity. B. It decides the social success of individuals. C. It improves the likability of facial expressions. D. It is a method for promoting participants’ likability. 15. What can be the best title for the text? A. FACS: A New Method for Social Science B. Facial Expressions: Important for Social Success C. The Development of Facial Muscle Movements D. Julia Green knows this well. Marriage, healthcare, employment and more have featured noticeably in her writing, and she is especially impressive when it comes to music criticism. A. Admiring. B. Critical. C. Dismissive. D. Objective. 【答案】4. B 5. C 6. A 7. 9. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 3 refer to? A. The difficulty in filming. B. The network’s disconnection. C. The late transmission of data. D. The operator’s improper use. 10. Why are Venice and Genoa mentioned in paragraph 4? A. The way it captures videos. B. Its process of translating data. C. Its advantages over the prior one. D. The amount of data it requires. 【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. The Way to Be Likable and Socially Successful 【答案】12. D 13. D 14. A 15. I firmly support students using e-dictionary pens as they bring great convenience to English learning. Firstly, these pens allow quick lookup of new words, saving time spent flipping through heavy paper dictionaries. This helps maintain learning focus in class or while reading. Secondly, most pens provide multiple functions like pronunciation, word formation and example sentences, which deepen understanding of words.
