The lady said, “You know, one of the 17 I gave you the job was because of that old lawn mower. It doesn’t _ 18 the air and it doesn’t make a big noise. One day, a father and his son went to a kite flying festival.
When they arrived, there were already many adults and their children playing in the park. When the son saw the sky filled with colorful kites in different shapes, he was excited and wanted to get one too. His father agreed to buy one for him. So they went to a kite shop and chose a beautiful one.
With the string (线) in hand, the son started to fly the kite. Soon, the kite was high up in the sky. After a while, the son said, “Father, it seems that the string is stopping the kite from flying higher. If we cut it, it will be free and fly even higher. Can we cut it?” The father didn’t reply, but just cut the string off the reel (绕轴). Suddenly, the kite began to go higher, which made the son much happier. However, to his surprise, the kite was coming down. They waited for quite some time. Slowly, it fell onto the grass. The son felt upset and asked, “I thought that after cutting the string, the kite would fly higher. Why did it fall down?” The father smiled and said, “The role of the string was not stopping the kite from flying higher, but helping it stay in the sky, because the kite itself can’t fly up.”
By using the string you help the kite go up in the right direction. When you cut the string, it could not support the kite. In our life, we may sometimes feel like there are certain things that are holding us back and stopping us from growing. But in fact, these might be the things that support us most. We can really grow up and become stronger by realizing the importance of these things.

A. Helping it fly higher. B. Stopping it from flying higher.
C. Making it more beautiful. D. Keeping it from falling down.
26. Why did the kite fall down after the string was cut?
A. Because there was no wind. B. Because it was too heavy.
C. Because the string was needed to support it. D. Because the son didn’t fly it properly.
27. What might the writer of this story want to tell us?
A. Kites need strings to fly high in the sky. B. We should always listen to our parents.
C. Some things seem to hold us back but help us. D. Flying kites is not an easy activity.

A new study has found that people who use facial (面部的) expressions(表情) often are more popular and better at negotiating. Negotiating means discussing something with others to reach an agreement.
At Nottingham Trent University in England, researchers studied more than 1,500 conversations between people. They set up video calls to record people’s natural reactions and expressions. They used a system called FACS to measure how expressive people’s faces were. Then, they showed the recordings to 170 people and asked them to rate (评定等级) the popularity of the people in the videos from their facial expressions.
In another part of the study, researchers recorded video conversations between 1,456 strangers and studied their expressions. On average (平均), people made 71 facial movements per minute. After the conversations, the people who had been talking to each other had to rate how much they liked each other. The results showed that those with more expressive faces were more liked by their conversation partners.
During the conversations, the people were also given a negotiation task. The more expressive people usually got better results. The researchers believe that using facial expressions makes people look more friendly and helps them connect with others. They also think that being expressive is important for solving disagreements successfully.
Professor Bridget Waller, who worked on the study, said the research may explain why humans have developed more complex (复杂的) facial expressions than other animals. Waller added that facial expressions are not just to show feelings, but also a way of communicating alongside words.

A. They were usually more popular among conversation partners.
B. They were usually less liked by their conversation partners.

30. What do facial expressions mean by Professor Bridget Waller?
A. They are the only way humans communicate.

D. They are used mainly to show people’s feelings.
31. What’s the passage mainly about?

Nearly everyone is shy in some ways. Some are born shy while others become shy because of too much unhappiness. 32 They may always wonder: What kind of impression am I making? Do the people around like me? Am I wearing unfashionable clothes?
Since shyness makes people feel uncomfortable, why not try to overcome (克服) it? 33
Keep a diary to find out the cause of your fears. By writing down your thoughts and fears, you can know more about yourself.
34 For example, if you’re going to a party, you’d better find out who will be there and what they will do. Think about what you would like to say ahead of time. In this way, you’ ll feel it much easier to communicate with others.
Make simple changes in body language. 35 “S” stands for “smile”. “O” is for “open” (always leave your legs and arms uncrossed), “F” for “forward”, “T” for “touch”, “E” for “eye contact” and “N” for “nod” (showing you’re listening and understanding).
No one ever gets over shyness completely. 36 So if you fail to beat shyness completely, don’t feel stressed. At least you can give other people a chance to know more about you!
A. The reasons why they are shy remain a secret.
B. The word “SOFTEN” may be helpful to you.
C. Shy people usually care too much about their own actions.
D. Prepare yourself for being with others in groups.
E. Don’t pay too much attention to the people around you.

七、阅读表达(共3小题;第1小题1分,第2小题2分,第3小题3分,共6分)
My name is Peter. I come from a small village, close to New York. I’ve been crazy about Chinese history and culture. So I learned Putonghua in the university and I am good at speaking it.
Three years ago, I came to China. I am an English teacher in a middle school in Suzhou, a city in East China. Now I get used to the life here except one thing — the language, Suzhou dialect (方言).
When I talk with older people, they prefer to speak Suzhou dialect. It is famous for its soft words, and is known as the “soft dialect”, which sounds very musical and pleasing. But it is quite different from Putonghua. Putonghua has only four tones (语调) while there are no less than seven in Suzhou dialect. Besides, the differences between Suzhou dialect and Putonghua go far beyond (超过) tones and pronunciations. There is rich information about the history and culture of Suzhou in its dialect. Apart from that, some pieces of slang (俗语) and expressions just don’t sound the same in Putonghua.
I made a lot of mistakes when communicating with Suzhou people here. However hard it is, I am already on the way to becoming a native (母语的) speaker, speaking like a local of Suzhou.
64. Which country does Peter come from?
____________________________________________________________________
65. What makes it difficult for Peter to understand Suzhou dialect?

66. Do you think it’s important for foreigners to learn the local dialect? Why or why not?
