While walking on the sidewalk, we often encounter small, sharp stones that we may just kick aside. Yet, to stone enthusiasts, these little rocks reveal a fascinating world.
JinHuilin, 34, a member of the Nanjing Yuhua Stone Cultural Exchange Association started observing stones at the age of 23 in Nanjing, Jiangsu. He was instantly grabbed by the beauty of Yuhua stones, describing them as “exceptionally enchanting”.
Nanjing Yuhua stone is a type of ornamental waterworn stone mainly found in areas like Nanjing and Yizheng. It is known for its jade-like texture, bright colors, delicate size, and rich designs.
When a Yuhua stone is dry, it appears as nondescript grey, making it difficult to detect its true quality. Jin and his friends used to go to mining sites in Luhu, Nanjing, on rainy days, wearing rubber shoes to collect Yuhua stones. The rainwater brought out detailed patterns on the stones. “If it’s not raining, it’s best to carry a bottle to spray the surface of these stones with water. You can sometimes uncover agate (玛瑙) or even fossils.” Jin said.
According to Jin, appreciating stones starts with their external qualities like texture, color, and patterns. However, “genuine appreciation of the cultural references of the stones requires cultural knowledge; otherwise, they might seem like mere blocks of color,” said Jin. With related cultural knowledge and imagination, people see different patterns according to the textures and shapes of stones — such as weather-beaten trees, lofty peaks, roaring waterfalls, green lotus, or aged scholars. “So, observing stones is, in a way, observing oneself. The stones a person chooses as their favorites ultimately reflect their cultural awareness.” Jin added.
Apart from water appreciation in which people observe patterns of stones in the water, Jin mentioned that enthusiasts also have other ways to appreciate stones. He gave some examples. “Some people enjoy holding stones in their hand, appreciating their unique textures, or using strong light to reveal hidden patterns that are even more beautiful. Others choose to place the stone on the desk, inviting admiration from guests who appreciate the stone from various angles.” said Jin.
For Jin, stone observation brings joy and freshness to his life. “Some people like to have lively pets as companions, while I prefer stones for their everlasting nature.” Jin noted.
24. Why did Jin and his friends collect stones on rainy days?
A. Because rainwater made the stones easier to carry.
B. Because wet stones were more valuable in the market.
C. Because rainy days prevented others from collecting stones.
D. Because rainwater revealed the hidden patterns of the stones.
25. What does the underlined word “nondescript” in paragraph 4 most probably mean?
A. Plain. B. Shiny. C. Unique. D. Colorful.
26. What does Jin Huilin suggest about stone appreciation?
A. It essentially relies on the observer’s cultural perspectives.
B. It is ideally conducted among enthusiasts on social occasions.
C. It specially focuses on examining rocks’ features on rainy days.
D. It generally requires advanced equipment to see their true beauty.
27. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. A Master of Stone Appreciation B. Observing stones, Reflecting Self
C. The Art of Making Yuhua stones D. Identifying stones, Appreciating Nature
C
SHOULD chimpanzees have rights? What about elephants? Or ants? Or microorganisms (微生物)? These questions are at the heart of The Moral Circle, a crisply argued book by Jeff Sebo, who has spent years arguing that consciousness is widespread in the animal kingdom and that we should extend our moral circle to encompass many more types of creature than we do at present.
Sebo sets out to demonstrate that we should take animal consciousness seriously when we decide how to treat other creatures. The scientific evidence for animal consciousness is growing, from reports of monkeys and dolphins apparently calling each other by name, as well as evidence of vivid dreams in octopuses.
However, Sebo’s aim isn’t to convince us that particular species are conscious. He makes a point that is both simple and profound: waiting for absolute certainty is a mistake. We can never be 100 percent sure if another being is conscious. But most of us still act as if other people are conscious beings with feelings and rights. Right now, we aren’t entirely sure whether chimps or elephants are conscious and we are very uncertain about ants — but in all three cases, it is a distinct possibility. That means we must treat them with some degree of moral concern.
This probabilistic argument is both refreshing and commonsensical. It reflects the truth of our experience of animals, and it encourages a degree of kindness and consideration without imposing dogmatic (武断的,自以为是的)standards. Sebo isn’t saying that we should necessarily treat a chimpanzee or an ant as equivalent to a human, but even if we don’t, there is plenty of room for us to extend them more care than we do at the moment.
My one concern is that Sebo may simply be writing at the wrong time. We live in an age where many of our leaders are trying to take rights away from many people, ranging from transgender people and migrants to women in Afghanistan. The prospect of extending rights to animals like chimps and elephants, let alone squids and flies, seems very far away. But perhaps it is in times like these that we need calls for wider empathy most of all.
28. What is the central theme of Jeff Sebo’s book The Moral Circle?
A. The history of animal consciousness research.
B. The widespread consciousness of animal rights.
C. The expansion of the moral consideration to more creatures.
D. The comparison of consciousness between animal and human.
29. If Sebo’s argument were widely accepted, which of the following would be a likely result?
A. The reduction in biodiversity.
B. More concerns over nature preservation.
C. A re-evaluation of human-centered policies.
D. A universal agreement on the rights of all species.
30. What is the author’s worry about Jeff Sebo’s argument?
A. The proposal is short-sighted and impractical.
B. People would not consider it worthwhile to debate.
C. It is tough to conduct in such socio-political climate.
D. It is unnecessary given the current human rights issues.
31. What is the main purpose of this passage?
A. To interpret the core point conveyed in The Moral Circle.
B. To present evidence that all animals possess consciousness.
C. To criticize the current political systems for neglecting human rights.
D. To highlight recent scientific discoveries about animal consciousness.
D
In a twist of modern consumer psychology, we are now comfortable injecting synthetic (人工合成的) substances into our faces, yet shy away from the thought of putting them in our mouths. While we embrace synthetics when it comes to beauty, we continue to draw the line at our lunch. Alternative proteins, from plant-based fake meat to lab-grown meat, struggle for public acceptance despite clear benefits, including far lower greenhouse gas emissions and no animal welfare issues.
One explanation for this is our strange admiration for “natural” as shorthand for purity, authenticity and safety. This preference is known as the “naturalness bias” in psychology and it underlies why we draw back from “synthetic meat” even when it is less risky than industrial farming. This preference isn’t unreasonable so much as old-fashioned. For early humans, avoiding unfamiliar food was a survival tool, as a strong disgust response protected us against taking polluted food.
But our instincts haven’t kept pace with innovation and what is now considered the “natural” choice may be the one carrying significant risk. If we are to meet the protein needs of a global population approaching 10 billion by mid-century, food innovation isn’t a choice, but a necessity. Livestock farming’s landuse, water consumption and emissions footprints are unsustainable at scale. Cultivated meat are viable alternatives, but consumer scepticism, fuelled by outdated beliefs, is slowing their adoption.
One way forward is transparency (透明度): explaining alternative protein production processes to consumers and linking these to familiar ones like cheese-making or beer-brewing. Equally, we must be willing to break the myth that meat, as it is consumed today, is somehow “natural”. A typical supermarket pack of sausages is the result of a long process involving feed additives, genetic selection and industrial killing. If we are uncomfortable with the word “synthetic”, we might do well to consider what conventional meat production actually contains.
Our bias towards the natural once kept us alive. Now it may be preventing us from embracing the very technologies that are essential to our long-term food security, environmental stability and even public health. After all, if we have welcomed synthetics into our lives and our bodies, perhaps it is time to extend that pragmatism (实用主义) to our plates.
32. What does the author mean by “a twist of modern consumer psychology”?
A. People’s psychology has now become twisted and complicated.
B. Psychology studies have taken a new turn in consumer research.
C. Alternative proteins are beneficial yet undesirable among consumers.
D. Consumers hold contradictory attitudes towards synthetics in different products.
33. According to paragraphs 2 and 3, which of the following is true about the “naturalness bias”?
A. It is a completely unreasonable fear of new technology.
B. It has been easily overcome by recent food innovations.
C. It was once a logical survival tool but may be unsuitable today.
D. It protects people from significant risks in the modern food system.
34. What is a recommended approach to increasing public acceptance of alternative proteins?
A. Making the unfamiliar production process more relatable.
B. Focusing on balancing the flavour just like conventional meat.
C. Maintaining the myth about their production to avoid public fear.
D. Adapting their production process to be more industrial and efficient.
35. What is the author’s overall attitude towards alternative proteins?
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.

Walking Tall
Jacob Bell had a troubled past. He struggled with drugs, committed theft, and was even imprisoned for burglary. Yet he never gave up on himself. After he was released, he found work as a truck driver and completed a first-aid course required for his job — a decision that would soon help him save lives.
It was one sunny Saturday in August when long-time fishing buddies Jacob Bell and his friend decided to call it a day on Lake Waxahachie. As they approached the shore, he heard screaming coming from the lake, some 50 yards offshore. He immediately steered his boat toward the scene. There, he saw a girl shouting and waving an arm. She was in 12-foot-deep water and seemed to be holding on to a life jacket or a raft.
But when Bell got closer, he was shocked to see that the girl was, in fact, gripping the foot of another girl, who was submerged upside down. Instinctively, he grabbed the unconscious girl, who was like a dead weight, and managed to pull her up and into his boat with great effort.
Her face, lips, and ears were a ghostly blue. She wasn’t breathing. No! thought Bell. Don’t let me lose you! Suddenly, Bell’s recent CPR training kicked in. He began pumping on her chest. After several attempts, she spit out spurts of water from her mouth. He continued until she suddenly coughed, took a deep breath, and opened her eyes. She’s back! he thought, watching her face transform from blue to purple to pale to a light red. Bell kept her stable until paramedics arrived and rushed her to the hospital. She was released later that day, fully recovered.
It didn’t take long for the media to feature the rescue and brand Bell a hero. He felt uncomfortable with the praise, “I’m not a hero. I just did what I needed to do.” He preferred to stay out of the spotlight and return to his daily work.
Six weeks later, as he was driving west of Fort Worth, he noticed a car that had apparently hit a telephone pole, careened (猛冲,疾驰) off the road, slid down a hill and flipped over. It was on fire.
注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;

Paragraph 1: Bell hurried down to the burning car with a fire extinguisher (灭火器).

W: So Max, as an underwater film-maker, you often spend months far from home filming. How is that?
M: I can forget about it on days that I’m really busy, but there aren’t many of those on a long trip. I’d like to fly back during short breaks in filming, but we’re often traveling to other destinations then. The ideal would be for my wife and children to come with me. I’m sure they’d enjoy it.
W: Are there any qualities every good underwater film-maker should have?
M: People who don’t dive assume that filming underwater is really stressful, whereas I actually feel as at home there as I do above it. Nature’s unpredictable, so things don’t often go according to plans. Anyone working in my field has to be good at sorting these difficulties out, and quickly.
W: Are there any suggestions you’d make to people who want to get a job like yours?
M: You get work by creating good films. The mistake people make is to spend whatever money they have paying for expensive cameras and a week filming in a remote location. They end up with one film, which may or may not be any good. Improving your abilities by working on a range of projects nearer to where you live is a much better idea.

A 18. B 19. C 20. B
M: Here at the art sale, there are works of some local artists. One of them is Don Studley, who has a special interest in the art sale because his five-year-old daughter was born with a serious back problem. After an operation earlier this year, she’s now doing fine, but Don says he wants to offer something to help other less fortunate children. His paintings present some of our New Zealand birds in their natural habitats.
One relative newcomer to New Zealand is James Chang, who came here from Singapore nine years ago. At the age of 56, Mr Chang had 13 exhibitions in Singapore right before he came to live here in New Zealand. His paintings are certainly worth looking at — if you like abstract pictures with strong color combinations, you’ll love them.
Natalie Stevens was born in New Zealand, and has exhibited in China, Australia and Spain. Most of her works feature lively figures, so watch out — some of them may even be friends of yours.
Well, that’s all I have time to tell you now, but there are many other artists whose work will be on sale, so do come along.

D 25. A 26. A 27. B
根据第四段中的“Jin and his friends used to go to mining sites in Luhu, Nanjing, on rainy days, wearing rubber shoes to collect Yuhua stones. The rainwater brought out detailed patterns on the stones.(金和他的朋友们过去常在雨天穿着胶鞋去南京陆湖的矿区收集雨花石。雨水使石头上的纹理更加清晰)”可知,雨水能显现石头上的细致纹路是金和他的朋友们在雨天收集石头的原因。故选D。
【25题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段划线词nondescript前面的“When a Yuhua stone is dry(当雨花石干燥时)”和后面的“making it difficult to detect its true quality(这使得很难察觉其真正的品质)”可知,干燥时的石头难以察觉真实品质。 故选A。
根据第五段中的“genuine appreciation of the cultural references of the stones requires cultural knowledge; otherwise, they might seem like mere blocks of color, said Jin. With related cultural knowledge and imagination, people see different patterns according to the textures and shapes of stones — such as weather-beaten trees, lofty peaks, roaring waterfalls, green lotus, or aged scholars. So, observing stones is, in a way, observing oneself. The stones a person chooses as their favorites ultimately reflect their cultural awareness.(金说,要真正欣赏石头所蕴含的文化内涵,需要具备文化知识;否则,它们可能看起来只是一块块彩色的石头。有了相关的文化知识和想象力,人们会根据石头的纹理和形状看到不同的图案,比如饱经风霜的树木、高耸的山峰、轰鸣的瀑布、绿色的莲花,或者年迈的学者。所以,赏石在某种程度上就是审视自己。一个人所钟爱的石头最终反映了他的文化意识)”可推知,金慧林强调真正的鉴赏需要文化知识,且喜欢的石头反映文化认知,即鉴赏本质依赖观察者的文化知识与认知。故选A。
本文的第五段是核心升华段,根据该段中的“So, observing stones is, in a way, observing oneself. The stones a person chooses as their favorites ultimately reflect their cultural awareness.(所以,赏石在某种程度上就是审视自己。一个人所钟爱的石头最终反映了他的文化意识)”是主旨句,是作者通过雨花石爱好者金慧林的经历想传递的核心思想。由此可知,B项Observing stones, Reflecting Self(观石见己)与之相吻合,可作本文标题。故选B。
D The comparison of consciousness between animal and human.
29. If Sebo’s argument were widely accepted, which of the following would be a likely result?
A. The reduction in biodiversity.
B. More concerns over nature preservation.
C A re-evaluation of human-centered policies.
C 29. C 30. C 31. A

根据第一段中的“These questions are at the heart of The Moral Circle, a crisply argued book by Jeff Sebo, who has spent years arguing that consciousness is widespread in the animal kingdom and that we should extend our moral circle to encompass many more types of creature than we do at present.(这些问题是Jeff Sebo的著作《道德圈》的核心。他多年来一直认为,意识在动物界普遍存在,我们应该扩大道德圈,将更多种类的生物纳入其中,而不仅仅是目前所涵盖的)”可知,该书的核心主题是将道德关怀扩展到更多生物。故选C项。
【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中的“That means we must treat them with some degree of moral concern.(这意味着我们必须给予它们一定程度的道德关怀) ”和第四段中的“Sebo isn’t saying that we should necessarily treat a chimpanzee or an ant as equivalent to a human, but even if we don’t, there is plenty of room for us to extend them more care than we do at the moment.(Sebo并不是说我们必须把黑猩猩或蚂蚁等同于人类,但即使不这样做,我们也有很大的空间给予它们比现在更多的关怀) ”可知,Sebo的核心主张是将道德关怀扩展到更多生物,打破当前以人类为中心的道德边界。
根据第五段中的“We live in an age where many of our leaders are trying to take rights away from many people, ranging from transgender people and migrants to women in Afghanistan. The prospect of extending rights to animals like chimps and elephants, let alone squids and flies, seems very far away.(我们生活在一个许多领导人试图剥夺许多人权利,从跨性别者、移民到阿富汗妇女,的时代。将权利扩展到黑猩猩和大象等动物身上的前景,更不用说鱿鱼和苍蝇了,似乎还很遥远) ”可知,作者担心在当前的社会政治环境下,Sebo的主张难以推行。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,并结合第一段“SHOULD chimpanzees have rights? What about elephants? Or ants? Or microorganisms (微生物)? These questions are at the heart of The Moral Circle, a crisply argued book by Jeff Sebo, who has spent years arguing that consciousness is widespread in the animal kingdom and that we should extend our moral circle to encompass many more types of creature than we do at present.(黑猩猩应该有权利吗? 故选A项。
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Uncertain. D. Supportive.
D 33. C 34. A 35. D

根据第一段“In a twist of modern consumer psychology, we are now comfortable injecting synthetic substances into our faces, yet shy away from the thought of putting them in our mouths. While we embrace synthetics when it comes to beauty, we continue to draw the line at our lunch.(在现代消费者心理的转变中,我们现在敢于将人工合成的物质注射到脸上,但却不愿将它们放进嘴里。在美容方面我们欣然接受人工制品,但在饮食方面我们却始终坚守底线)”可知,作者所说的“现代消费者心理的一种扭曲”指的是消费者对不同产品中的合成材料持有相互矛盾的态度。故选D。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“For early humans, avoiding unfamiliar food was a survival tool, as a strong disgust response protected us against taking polluted food.(对于早期人类而言,避免食用陌生的食物是一种生存手段,因为强烈的厌恶反应能保护我们不食用受污染的食物)”以及第三段“But our instincts haven’t kept pace with innovation and what is now considered the “natural” choice may be the one carrying significant risk.(但我们的直觉却未能跟上创新的步伐,如今被视为“自然的”的选择,或许恰恰是风险最大的那一个)”可知,C选项“它曾经是一种有效的生存手段,但如今可能已不再适用”正确。
根据第四段“One way forward is transparency: explaining alternative protein production processes to consumers and linking these to familiar ones like cheese-making or beer-brewing.(一种可行的途径是提高透明度:向消费者解释替代蛋白质的生产流程,并将其与人们熟知的诸如奶酪制作或啤酒酿造等流程相联系)”可知,提高公众对替代蛋白质接受度的推荐方法是使不为人知的生产过程更具可理解性。故选A。

故填apology/apologies。
故填a。

故填on。
attempt to do sth. 故填to cover。

故填how。

注意:1.续写词数应为150词左右;
Paragraph 1: Bell hurried down to the burning car with a fire extinguisher (灭火器).
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: This time, when the press named him “a two-time hero,” Bell didn’t object.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Bell hurried down to the burning car with a fire extinguisher (灭火器). He sprayed until the extinguisher was empty but the car kept burning. So he used the metal extinguisher to smash the driver’s side window. Bell had to work fast. He reached into the car and felt an arm. The driver was still buckled in by his seat belt, hanging upside down in the overturned car. Bell reached for his pocketknife and cut the seat belt. The unconscious driver, an elderly man, began slipping down. Bell cradled him tightly, pulled him from the burning car and carried the man up the hill to the roadside in case the car might explode. Then, his recent first-aid training kicked in, again. He continued reviving the man until paramedics arrived and rushed the man to the hospital.
This time, when the press named him “a two-time hero,” Bell didn’t object. Indeed, he wanted the world to know that there was another side to his story, one he was now ready to share. He told the press, “I had a troubled past. I’ve done drugs, stolen, and worse. I’ve been in prison. But I never gave up on myself.” He paused, blinked back a tear and added, “After I saved the girl, I felt proud of myself for the very first time. Maybe it was God’s way of showing that no matter how far you’ve fallen, you can still find meaning in life if you keep believing. I didn’t just save two lives — I saved my own.” Bell’s transformation from a troubled individual to a lifesaver demonstrates that we are not defined by our past mistakes, but by our present choices. His example encourages us all to be prepared, to care deeply, and to act bravely when others are in need.
