Tom explained the problem and added, “I need help because my legs are paralysed.” The words came out flat. But he did not know how else he could convey the fact that he needed help from this weak old man in the middle of the rainstorm. The old man simply nodded his head and asked Tom to open the boot of his car.

A.Retell the short story in your own words.
Tom was driving home one night in a rainstorm. He struggled to keep his car on the road and felt despair as he was trapped both in his disabled body and inside his car. Then Tom had a flat tyre, making him feel even more hopeless. Tom felt hope when he saw a light in the distance. He eased the car towards it and saw a young
girl standing in the doorway of a house. Tom asked her for help, and soon the girl returned, holding the arm of an old man.
The old man fixed the car and Tom tried to pay him, but he made no move to accept the money. The girl told Tom that her grandfather was blind. Tom insisted on paying money, but the old man told him to just continue the chain of kindness instead. Driving home, Tom reflected on his experience and the old man’s words, and decided to make some big changes in his life. He stopped feeling sorry for himself and instead found ways to live a more fulfilling life, thus passing on the kindness he received from the old blind man.

C.Have you been inspired by the kindness of others or helped someone in need? Describe the situation.
I have been inspired by a man who lives in my community. He is a restaurant owner. For at least four years he has delivered free lunches to the senior citizens in my community. Most live alone and can no longer cook for themselves. He even makes special dishes for them during festivals. Inspired by him, I began to help these old people at weekends and sometimes during my holidays. My simple actions like chatting with them or washing their clothes really make their day, and mine too!

One year, I learnt from a TV news report that a severe flood had taken place in a neighbouring province. My heart broke when I saw that millions of people were seriously affected: their houses were washed away and their farmland was destroyed. I immediately decided to raise money and donate it to the disaster area. The next day at school, I asked my teacher to help me organize a week-long fundraising event.

Once I got permission from the school, I began to plan it. I set up a desk surrounded by eye-catching posters calling on teachers and students to donate. By the end of the week, 3,500 yuan was raised and donated to the flood
victims. I was told that the money would be used for buying necessities for them. I was glad I was able to help.
