Four Best Places to See the Art of Leonardo da Vinci
Santa Maria delle Grazie, Milan
Leonardo da Vinci painted the world-famous work The Last Supper on a wall next to the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. The wall painting was innovative for the time. However, due to its use of this new method and environmental factors, the 15th-century painting has seen its fair share of deterioration (退化) over the years.
Uffizi Gallery, Florence
Uffizi Gallery is a must-see, thanks to its display of works by young da Vinci. These paintings were all completed before 1482, the year the artist left Florence to paint for Duke Ludovico il Moro in Milan. In this room, visitors can explore the early stages of the artist’s brilliance. Annunciation and Adoration of the Magi are two of the highlights that demonstrate his keen attention to detail, and amazing ability to draw landscape backgrounds.
National Gallery of Art, Washington DC
Another national museum lucky enough to have a da Vinci’s work in its collection is the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC. In fact, Ginevra de’ Benci is the only work by da Vinci on public view in the Americas. The portrait (肖像) was one of Leonardo’s first experiments with oil painting. The gallery bought the portrait in 1967 for a sum of $5 million — a record price at the time.
The Louvre, Paris
One of the largest museums in the world, the Louvre is well-known for being the home of da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the earliest Italian painting to focus on the sitter in a half-length portrait. But how did such an important work by the Italian Renaissance artist end up in France? That’s because da Vinci brought the painting with him to France in 1517, where he continued to work on it-it was his favourite painting and he would continuously add details to it for the rest of his life.
1. Which museum only exhibits works by da Vinci during his youth?
A. The Louvre. B. Uffizi Gallery.
C. National Gallery of Art. D. Santa Maria delle Grazie.
2. When did the National Gallery of Art buy Ginevra de’ Benci?
A. In 1482. B. In 1517. C. In 1915. D. In 1967.
3. Which painting did Leonardo da Vinci like best?
A. Mona Lisa. B. Annunciation.
C. The Last Supper. D. Adoration of the Magi.

When you think about who’s responsible for a city’s safety, what people come to mind? Police officers, firefighters or emergency response teams? Would you put your local meteorologist (气象预报员) in this group? That’s the career Ashley Ruiz chose, and she’s now the first female chief meteorologist in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Ruiz predicts the weather for her community.
In 2020, a tornado hit Ruiz’s hometown of Chattanooga, Tennessee — and, even closer to home, her house. So she said she knew what a lifesaving job this could be.
However, her job isn’t without difficulties. “Hearing people have been injured, like in a big hurricane, is really hard,” she said. “We try our best to predict the weather as best as we can, and we are getting better. But it can always change.”
Ruiz talked about the new and changing weather patterns. She said, “We are absolutely seeing changes in weather, with more intense and more frequent storms, which relate to climate change.” Weather is changing everywhere, as the planet warms. There are more frequent droughts, stronger storms, and increasing temperature changes. This makes predicting the weather difficult.
Ruiz always knew she was interested in weather and how it affected the world. But her path to a career in meteorology wasn’t easy. She said, “I struggled so hard with math and wanted to give up. But I kept pushing and working hard, and now I’m the first woman chief meteorologist in the Baton Rouge TV market. I’m proud of that.” She wants kids to know they should never give up on their education or their dreams.
4. Why was the disaster in Ruiz’s hometown mentioned in the text?
A. To call on people to prepare for disasters.
B. To introduce Ruiz’s unusual childhood experience.
C. To offer a successful example of weather forecast.
D. To show Ruiz’s understanding of the work of a meteorologist.
5. What is a challenge of predicting the weather according to the text?
A. Climate change. B. People’s injury.
C. Poor technology. D. Lack of experience.
6. Which word can best describe Ruiz according to the last paragraph?
A. Creative. B. Clever. C. Hard-working. D. World-famous.
7. In which section of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health.
C
People who have trouble walking often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It’s called Seatrac.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (轻便梯) that can smoothly carry a disabled person into the sea. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water or go for a swim. The Seatrac system can also help anyone else who has a hard time walking, including older people and pregnant women.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. The idea for it came when one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair. The friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn’t like having to be carried into the ocean as if he were a sack (袋) of potatoes.
Mr. Fotiou realized that there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr. Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. In time, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell it.
The company worked hard to make the system simple to put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheelchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.
This summer, the Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cyprus, Italy and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries soon.
The Seatrac service in Greece is being offered for free. The Greek government has helped pay for it, with local cities buying and managing the equipment. Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
8. Who is Seatrac designed for?
A Older people who move freely.
B. Youths who like to swim in the sea.
C. Women who enjoy beach baths with their children.
D. People who have trouble moving around on the beach.
9. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A. The system. B. Potato. C. Ramp. D. Normal wheelchair.
10. What can we learn about the Seatrac system?
A. It’s not easy to operate.
B. Users don’t have to worry about charging it.
C. People need to have a big cost to use it in Greece.
D. It has been available at more than one thousand beaches.
11. Why does the Greek government help pay for the Seatrac service?
A. To improve the government’s image.
B. To promote the development of tourism.
C. To set up an organization for the disabled.
D. To support small and medium-sized local companies.

In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.
Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.
The process of creating lab-grown meat is completely different from the normal meat-raising process. The first cells come from live animals. The cells are grown inside large steel tanks, where they’re fed with everything they need to grow. In a few weeks, the cells grow to look like normal meat. The companies then form this meat into more familiar shapes.
The companies say that their meat is better for the environment than meat from animals.
Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. It also creates a lot of pollution. Raising animals for food creates about 15% of the world’s greenhouse gases. That’s why cutting back on eating meat is one of the easiest ways to fight climate change. Lab-grown meat can also help out in other ways. Raising animals for food is extremely hard on animals. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.
Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat. Lots of people believe that it just sounds weird. But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”
But right now, the meat is far more expensive than meat from animals. Even though the companies have been approved, they have the huge challenge of figuring out how to make much more meat far more cheaply.
12. What can we know about lab-grown chicken meat?
A. It is created from animal cells in a laboratory.
B It is cheaper than the normal meat.
C. America is the first country to approve selling it.
D. Two companies are allowed to do research on it.
13. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A. The necessity of eating normal meat.
B. The process of creating lab-grown meat.
C. The disadvantages of raising animals for food.
D. The similarities between lab-grown meat and normal meat.
14. What does the underlined word “weird” in paragraph 6 mean?
A. Easy. B. Ordinary. C. Strange. D. Attractive.
15. What is the best title for the text?
A. Lab-grown Meat Is Outdated
B. What Exactly Is Lab-grown Meat?
C. How Is the Lab-grown Chicken Made?
D. Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming

The light of dawn bathed the Himalayan tops in gold when Kael first noticed the climbers. At the age of seven, he would sit outside his family’s house, fingers brushing the worn rope his father kept by the door. Tomas, his father, was a guide-one of the few who dared lead tourists up the rough roads of eastern Nepal. Each summer, when wildflowers covered the valleys, strangers would walk through their village, boots covered in mud.
Kael collected their thrown-away items like a worn map. He’d hidden them under his bed, tracing the map’s lines at night. Once, he followed a group halfway up a hill. Tomas found him, scolded (骂) him a little but smiled. Then he carried Kael on his shoulders and walked home. “Mountains test brave people,” Tomas said.
One winter, the mountains were no longer a dream for Kael. He slipped on black ice. That fall left his left leg badly hurt. Weeks later, when the wooden supports were taken off, Kael’s leg could not move. He buried his treasures in the snow, refusing to look at the mountain tops.
Several days later, Kael often heard his father scraping (刮擦)wood with a knife every night, wood pieces piled by the fireplace. One morning, his father placed a wooden leg beside his bed. Kael stared at it, and then looked at Tomas’ blistered (起泡的) hands, and turned his head away.
Spring came, but Kael stayed indoors until he heard tourists laughing one day. He walked outside, watching them tidy their safety belts. Something in his heart began to move. That night, he put the wooden leg on. But he only took two steps before hitting the table. Saying nothing, Tomas just got some ointment (药膏) and helped Kael try again.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Kael’s journey with his wooden leg began on quiet mornings in the valleys.

A. Sports. B. People. C. Education. D. Health.
D 5. A 6. C 7. B

A. Older people who move freely.
D 9. A 10. B 11. B

But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves.
Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system.(福蒂欧和他的搭档以及希腊一所大学的教授一起设计了这个系统。)” 故选A项。
根据第五段中的“The system is solar-powered. It doesn’t require outside power and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out.(该系统是太阳能驱动的。它不需要外部电源,即使停电也能继续运行。)”可知,这个系统是太阳能驱动的,所以使用者不用担心它的充电问题。故选B项。

Greece’s government hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.(希腊政府帮助支付了这笔费用,由当地城市购买和管理设备。
D
B. It is cheaper than the normal meat.
A 13. C 14. C 15. D

根据文章第二段“Unlike normal chicken meat, lab-grown meat isn’t created by raising and killing chickens. Instead, it’s a meat product developed from animal cells that are grown in a lab. So it is also called “cell-based” or “cultured” meat.(与普通的鸡肉不同,实验室培育的肉并不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的。相反,它是一种在实验室中从动物细胞中培育出来的肉类产品。因此,它也被称为“细胞基”或“培养”肉。)”可知,实验室培育的鸡肉不是通过饲养和宰杀鸡只来获得的,而是从在实验室中培养的动物细胞中培育出来的。因此,我们可以知道实验室培育的鸡肉是由实验室中的动物细胞制成的。故选A。
根据文章第五段“Raising animals for food uses huge amounts of land and water. They are often kept in small spaces and are treated badly.(饲养动物作为食物会消耗大量的土地和水资源。
根据划线单词上文“Polls (民意调查) have shown that many people aren’t too interested in lab-grown meat.(民意调查显示许多人对实验室培育的肉类并不太感兴趣。)” 再根据下文“But Amy Chen, who works for Upside Foods, says that once people try the meat, “The most common response we get is, ‘Oh, it tastes like chicken.’”(但 Upside Foods 的Amy Chen表示,一旦人们尝过这种肉,“我们得到的最常见的回应是,‘哦,它的味道就像鸡肉。’”)”
根据文章第一段“In late June, the US government agreed to allow two companies, Upside Foods and Good Meat, to sell chicken meat that has been grown in a laboratory. That makes the US the second country to approve lab-grown chicken.(六月底,美国政府同意允许两家公司 Upside Foods 和 Good Meat 销售在实验室培育的鸡肉。这使得美国成为第二个批准实验室培育鸡肉的国家。)”以及全文内容可知,本文主要报道了美国政府同意两家公司销售实验室培育的鸡肉的消息,并详细介绍了实验室培育肉的相关内容。全文围绕“实验室培育的鸡肉即将上市”这一主题展开,因此最好的标题是D“Lab-grown Chicken Meat Is Coming(实验室培育的鸡肉即将上市)”。故选D。

【答案】Dear Ms. Johnson,
I’m writing to share my choice for the campus cultural festival—I strongly recommend the Chinese Traditional Craft Workshop.
Traditional crafts like paper-cutting and kite-making are vivid carriers of Chinese culture. They not only showcase unique artistic styles but also allow students to experience hands-on creation. Compared with cooking classes, crafts are easier to organize with simple materials, and students can keep their works as meaningful souvenirs.
I believe this workshop will help everyone better understand Chinese culture. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua

注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
Kael’s journey with his wooden leg began on quiet mornings in the valleys.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Years later, a group of young climbers arrived at the door of a guide who was said to be very brave.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Kael’s journey with his wooden leg began on quiet mornings in the valleys. He practiced walking slowly, supported by his father’s arm. At first, every step caused pain, but Tomas always encouraged him, saying that patience would lead to progress. They hiked short paths where wildflowers bloomed, and Kael gradually gained strength. He learned to balance on rocky roads that once seemed impossible. With each passing day, his fear faded, and he realized the mountains still held the magic that he had loved since childhood.
Years later, a group of young climbers arrived at the door of a guide who was said to be very brave. It was Kael, now a respected guide with a wooden leg. The climbers asked if he could lead them up the challenging peaks. Kael smiled, recalling the lessons his father had taught him — that courage is not the absence of fear but the will to keep going. He agreed, and as they climbed, he shared stories of his journey that inspired the young climbers. Together, they reached the top, where the sun shone brightly on their faces.
