The three contestants were sitting at their desks on the stage and waiting. The hot lights were shining down upon them. Suddenly one of them passed out and fell across her desk. A cameraman helped the woman off the stage.
The director hurried down from the control room above. “We need another contestant,” he shouted. “Who among you wants to be on TV?”
Angela raised her hand. “You’re on!” the director shouted. He led her onto the stage, and a make-up artist rushed forward. She quickly put make-up on Angela’s face and brushed her hair.
“Ten seconds,” shouted the director.
“It’s time for Travel Quiz, and here’s your host, Lester Li!” said a loud voice.
Lester Li ran onto the stage. The quiz show began.
Although Angela was not prepared, she seemed relaxed and did really well. She answered the questions with no problems and was soon ahead of the other two contestants.
Twenty-five minutes later, Angela just had to answer six more questions to beat the other contestants and to win the prize.

Floods (洪水) are becoming more and more common around the world. The rising temperature is leading to heavier rainfall, but is the way that cities are growing making things worse? Could we design cities in a different way to reduce floods?
As cities get larger and more and more land is covered with concrete (混凝土), less water is taken in and more needs to be carried away by sewage systems (排水系统). As there is more water than they can hold, the risk of flooding increases.
Are we taking the wrong way? Chinese landscape designer Yu Kongjian certainly thinks so. In 2013, he thought of the idea of “sponge cities”, which are designed to take in water—like a sponge—reducing the sudden floods. He encourages people to take natural ways, such as using riverside parks and ponds to take in floodwater. Ways like this have been taken by cities across the world. Auckland, in New Zealand, was named the spongiest city in one study. It has built green banks and connected parks. This has reduced floods nearby.
Auckland has taken a natural way, but a much more high-tech method can be seen in Amsterdam. It has many special roofs on a number of buildings. These roofs have some plants on the outside and under them there is a smart system to collect and store rainwater. This water can be used by people in the buildings below to water plants or wash toilets.
Yu Kongjian describes the way of the “sponge cities” as using Tai Chi nature instead of boxing. We are still not sure whether a natural way is enough when facing heavy rainfall. What remains to be seen is whether connection to modern technology can help natural methods save many more people from flooding.
13. Why is rainfall getting heavier around the world?
A. Because cities need more rain water.
B. Because cities are getting larger.
C. Because the climate is getting warm.
D. Because cities are covered with concrete.
14. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “sponge” in Paragraph 3?
A. 下水道 B. 水龙头 C. 海绵 D. 水泵
15. What’s the purpose of “sponge cities”?
A. To help cities save water.
B. To develop larger cities.
C. To build more tourist attractions.
D. To protect cities from floods.
16. What is the structure of this passage? (①=Paragraph 1, ②=Paragraph 2…)
A. B. C. D.
【答案】13. C 14. C 15. D 16. B
【解析】
【导语】本文主要讨论了全球洪水问题日益严重的原因,并提出了通过不同的城市设计来减少洪水的可能性,包括“海绵城市”的自然方法以及现代科技手段的应用。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据“The rising temperature is leading to heavier rainfall”可知,气温上升导致降雨量增加,即气候变暖。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“In 2013, he thought of the idea of ‘sponge cities’, which are designed to take in water—like a sponge—reducing the sudden floods.”

Every Sunday at 2 pm, Marisela Godinez, the owner of a Mexican restaurant in Texas, used to fill a big bag with more than 50 liters of leftover (未食用的) food which is unsold from the restaurant’s all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (自助餐). “We threw out a lot of food,” she said.
But a few months ago, Ms. Godinez signed up to use an app called Too Good To Go. Now, 10 customers pick up “surprise bags” of her leftover food for $ 5.99 each and she sends far fewer leftovers to the bin.
Around the country, restaurants and grocery stores throw away huge amounts of unsold food every day. Apps that connect customers to businesses with unsold food have begun to spread. The idea of apps like Too Good To Go is to help businesses sell unsold food at a low price rather than throw it away. They say that the businesses and buyers are helping the environment because the food would otherwise become food waste, a big contributor (导致因素) to climate change.
Food production itself is a big contributor to greenhouse gas release (释放). It is responsible for nearly a third of gas release in the world. Each step of the process—growing, harvesting, processing, packaging, storing and preparing for food—releases carbon dioxide (CO2) and other planet-warming gases. When the food is wasted, greenhouse gas releases. In addition, once unused food reaches the bins, it breaks down and releases more greenhouse gases.
Too Good To Go has tried to make buying unsold food a game. In the United States, customers in 12 cities can book “surprise bags” that typically cost about $ 4 to $ 6 each on the app. The food in the bags would have been firstly priced at about three times that amount. Then, they can pick up the bags at a certain time window.
According to interviews with several companies selling on Too Good To Go, there are at least a few things that buyers don’t think of as “food waste”. An owner of a company which sells drinks said he only used the app to sell discontinued products but also new-flavored drinks in hopes of attracting new customers.

SURPRISES AT THE STUDIO
“Five minutes to go,” shouted the director. “Is everyone ready?”
“I’m glad that I’m not one of the contestants!” Denise said “I’m not that brave.”
“Oh, I’d love to be a contestant,” said Angela.
Denise was so excited that she could hardly keep still. Though the questions were getting more and more difficult, Angela kept getting them right.
Soon there was just a single question between Angela and victory.
“And finally, where’s Big Ben?” asked Lester.
“In England,” replied Angela.
“Correct!” shouted Lester. “You’re tonight’s lucky winner. You’ve won tonight’s prize trip for two to the lovely city of Paris!”

C. Angela and Denise were different in character.
D. The answer to the last question is Paris.
