M: Well, the bedroom is actually the first room that I started. I doodled a different theme based on the purpose of each room, including food in the kitchen, clouds in the”thinking room“, the ocean in the bathroom and so on.
W: When did you start to draw pictures?
M: When I was about one year old. My mother taught my brother and I to paint. As a teenager, I drew small comics about the subject with my friends. By the age of 25, I had chosen to be a full-time graffiti artist.
W: How do you describe your work?
M: It’s just such a great process. I just make myself completely involved in this free-flowing state of creation, and experience the joy of creation.
W: Do you have any plans for the future?
M: I want to build a “graffiti town” by doodling more houses in the area to further spread my creativity. You know this house was just the beginning of my childhood dream of doodling an entire planet.
W: Sounds great. Thank you very much for coming, and for bringing us so much.

We were hoping to get to Miami by 7:00 p.m., but the storm started moving faster than we had thought. We just can’t take any chances, so we’ll have to stop in Havana City and continue on tomorrow morning. There is also a chance that the storm will move closer to us, and we might experience some strong wind and rain. We know it seems nice and calm now, but that could change at any minute. For this reason, we need everyone to leave the deck and walk to your rooms at once. This is for your own safety. Do not run; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. Please don’t worry. The first week of September was a week that I had been expecting (期待) all summer. I didn’t want summer to end, but I was excited about going to high school for my first week.
When I got to school in the morning on the first day, I realized how large the school was, and how many students went there. I ended up in the wrong classroom because of the size of the school. Luckily, a kind senior showed up and guided me to my homeroom before I was late. I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉的) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey. My science teacher seemed like a good teacher. She was exciting and fun.
After finishing four classes without too much of a challenge, I didn’t feel too bad about ninth grade. However, the fifth class changed everything. I didn’t feel ready after all. My teacher’s name is Mr. Valassidis but he told us to call him Mr. V. Mr. V told us that we would have to write 40 essays (文章) and read AP-level books such as The Odyssey this year. I love reading and writing. But come on. 40 ESSAYS? AP-level books? Now I was afraid.
The courses in high school seem like they’re going to get much harder, but they haven’t yet. Even though my classes look hard, they look really exciting too.
The first week passed quickly. Although a lot of things were overwhelming (令人不知所措的): the size of the campus, the crowds (人群) and the seniors, having a totally different experience than I had ever had before was really exciting. Now, I’m really happy about high school. I have lots of friends in my classes, I really like my teachers and I’m meeting new people.

Scientists have long said getting a good night’s sleep is important to your health. Now, an American team of scientists reports that too much sleep might be connected with cognitive decline (认知衰退). Researchers at Washington University School of Medicine did the sleep study. Their findings were published in the September issue of Brain.
The study examined 100 adults who had been under medical observation for cognitive ability for 3 years. The average age of the study subjects was 65. Every year, they were asked to complete several tests for signs of cognitive decline—the higher the score, the less cognitive decline. They also wore special devices (设备) to measure their brain activity during sleep.
The study found that eighty-eight of the group were identified as free of cognitive damage eleven subjects as very little damaged, and one as a little damaged. And those whose cognitive scores declined slept less than 4.5 hours or more than 6.5 hours per night. But the scores stayed the same for those in the middle of the range (区间). Dr. Brendan Lucey, leading author of the research, said, “Our study suggests that there is a middle range for total sleep time for best cognitive ability. Shorter and longer sleep times were connected with worse cognitive result.”
Greg Elder, a sleep researcher at Northumbria University, expressed his ideas about the findings. He wrote in The Conversation, “This is low when we consider that older adults are advised to get between seven and eight hours of sleep every night.” He also noted that the research should have taken other information about the subjects studied, including their general health or economic conditions, into consideration.
But Dr. Lucey agreed that each person’s sleep needs are unique. Babies, young children, and teens need even more sleep for their growth and development. And people over 65 should also get more sleep per night. “It suggests that sleep quality may be key, not simply total sleep.” Lucey added.
28. Which side of the study does paragraph 2 mainly focus on?
A. Its process. B. Its background. C. Its result. D. Its preparations.
29. Which is the best for total sleep time according to the study?
A. 4 hours. B. 6 hours. C. 7 hours. D. 9 hours.
30. What can be inferred from Greg Elder’s words?
A. The findings need to be perfected.
B. Older adults need less sleep every night.
C. The more you sleep, the better your health is.
D. The findings agree with former expectations.
31. Which of the followings may Dr. Lucey agree with?
A. One’s sleep styles cannot be changed.
B. The amount of sleep increases with age.
C. Sleep needs differ from person to person.
D. Sleep time matters more than sleep quality.
【答案】28. A 29. B 30. A 31. C

“All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.” But now scientists have given us another warning: too much play with smartphones or computers makes you dull too.
“Many focus on the benefits of digital devices (设备) in education but ignore the costs,” said Patricia Greenfield from the University of California, “losing the ability to understand the emotions of other people is one of the costs.” Greenfield and her research team did an experiment. They worked with 105 children who spend about 4.5 hours in front of screens on a school day. The students were asked to describe the emotions towards the pictures of people who were happy, sad, angry or scared. Then, half of them attended a five-day nature and science camp. There they had no smartphones, TV, or computers. The other half stayed in school and spent the five days as usual. Five days later, all the children took the test again.
Students who had been to the camp got about 5 percent more answers correct than they had done before the camp. But the other group of students didn’t show much improvement. The study is not perfect in some ways, said the researchers. But scientists say that the study is still a warning for us.
“Emotional skills develop in practice and the brain develops through real interaction,” said Professor Taylor, a professor at the University of San Francisco.
Researchers talked to 2,000 parents of children aged 2 — 16 in the UK about what activities their children could do confidently. The results were surprising: their children could use a tablet (平板电脑) (59%) and work a mobile phone (57%) more confidently than they could tie their shoe laces (鞋带) (53%)! So, spend more time away from mobile phones and computers if you want to be an understanding friend, and not a member of what the Daily Mail called “Generation Helpless”.
32. According to Professor Greenfield, what’s the possible result of using digital media in education?
A. Being on bad terms with family members. B. Making more mistakes when taking exams.
C. Falling far behind others in all schoolwork. D. Failing to relate to other people’s emotions.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The background of the experiment B. The process of the experiment
C. The results of the experiment D. The purpose of the experiment
34. What do scientists think of the results of Greenfield’s experiment?
A. They are alarming for people. B. They are far from perfect.
C. They are quite surprising. D. They don’t need to be improved.
35. What’s the purpose of writing the text?
A. To warn us to stay away from the Internet.
B. To explain how people become the Internet addicts.
C. To advise children to spend less time on screens.
D. To show digital devices are essential for modern education.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. A 35. C

Discipline is used in schools to keep students, teachers and other staff safe and to help meet the behavioral, social and emotional needs of the students as they grow and develop. Schools can choose to use discipline in various ways. ____36____
Punitive (惩罚性的) techniques of discipline are most commonly used. ____37____ For example, a student must move his desk to the front of the room after getting caught throwing pencils at other students. The aim is that next time the student considers throwing a pencil, he will remember the embarrassment of having to move to the front of the room while the entire class knows he is in trouble.
Zero tolerance is something that is used for more severe behaviors. ____38____ However, the technique of zero tolerance means that no warnings are given and consequences are immediate. This type of discipline is used in cases of violence toward other students and other dangerous behaviors.

【解析】
【分析】本文是一篇说明文,主要讲的是学校使用纪律的几种方式。
【36题详解】
空格前说“Schools can choose to use discipline in various ways.(学校可以通过多种方式选择使用纪律。)”,E选项“And the choice usually depends on how severe the wrongdoing is.(这种选择通常取决于不当行为的严重程度。)”中的“choice”和前面的“choose”相一致,说明纪律的选择由学生错误的严重程度来确定,因此E选项承上启下,符合语境,故选E。
【37题详解】
空格前说“Punitive (惩罚性的) techniques of discipline are most commonly used.(惩罚手段是最常用的。)”,F选项“They involve using punishment in response to a negative behavior.(它们涉及对消极行为的惩罚。)”中的“punishment”和前面的“Punitive (惩罚性的) techniques”相一致,且后文“For example, a student must move his desk to the front of the room after getting caught throwing pencils at other students.(例如,一个学生向其他学生扔铅笔被抓后,必须把他的桌子移到教室前面。)”是惩罚的一个例子,因此F选项承上启下,符合语境,故选F。
【38题详解】
空格后说“However, the technique of zero tolerance means that no warnings are given and consequences are immediate.(然而,零容忍的技术意味着不发出警告,后果是立即发生的。)”,G选项“Typically students are given one warning or two before being punished.(通常情况下,学生在受到惩罚之前会得到一两次警告。)”中的“warning”和后面的“warnings”相一致,形成词语复现,因此G选项承上启下,符合语境,故选G。
【39题详解】
空格前说“For example, perhaps a student is given a sticker for turning in homework on time.(例如,也许一个学生会因为按时交作业而得到一张贴纸。)”,空格后说“So students want to make the right choices.(所以学生们想要做出正确的选择。)”,A选项“The goal here is to make proper behavior attractive.(这里的目标是使适当的行为具有吸引力。)”中的“make proper behavior attractive”和后面的“学生们想要做出正确的选择”相呼应,说明使适当的行为有吸引力后学生才会想要做出正确的选择,因此A选项承上启下,符合语境,故选A。
【40题详解】
空格后说“It means schools can choose more than one type according to different situations.(这意味着学校可以根据不同的情况选择多种类型。)”,C选项“In general, experts suggest using a mixture of the types.(一般来说,专家建议混合使用这些类型。)”中的“a mixture of the types”和空格后的“more than one type”相一致,是语义的复现,因此C选项承上启下,符合语境,故选C。

I was happy to see that in a class of unfamiliar (不熟悉) faces, the only open seat was next to my good friend Casey.

The study found that eighty-eight of the group were identified as free of cognitive damage, eleven subjects as very little damaged, and one as a little damaged.

In this way, schools can create well-rounded students who avoid undesired behaviors and instead gravitate toward the desired ones.
