2.What can you learn from Han Gan’s way of painting?
The Metropolitan Museum’s introduction to Night-Shining White
A leading horse painter of the Tang dynasty, Han Gan was known for capturing not only the likeness of a horse but also its spirit. This painting, the most famous work attributed to the artist, is a portrait of a charger (战马) of Emperor Xuanzong (r. 712–56). With its burning eye, flaring nostrils, and dancing hoofs, the fiery-tempered horse epitomises Chinese myths about Central Asian “celestial steeds” that “sweated blood” and were actually dragons in disguise.
这匹性情暴躁的马,怒目圆睁,鼻孔张开,马蹄飞舞,是中国神话中中亚“神马”的缩影,这些“汗血”宝马实际上是中国龙的化身。

Famous horse paintings in the west
The Horse Fair – Rosa Bonheur
French painter Rosa Bonheur is known as one of the most famous female artist of her time and typically created works that depict animals or nature settings in great detail. She is remembered as one of the great painters of the 19th century and her ability to capture scenes of animals in motion was unparalleled (绝无仅有的).
Famous horse paintings in the west
Whistlejacket – George Stubbs
One of Stubbs’ most widely recognised works depicts a simple portrait of a horse as it rears up on his hind legs.
The painting is titled Whistlejacket and was completed in 1762. This work was hailed as one of the most strikingly beautiful works that featured a horse, and many art critics noted the crisp detail of the Arabian thoroughbred (纯种马).
Stubbs’ masterful use of colour is on full display as he was able to give the horse a very natural-looking sorrel (栗色) colouration, which seemed to be further highlighted by the solid (纯色的) background.

The main differences are in
style (traditional ink vs. realistic oil vs. classical group scene),
level of detail (minimal/stylized vs. highly detailed vs. detailed but busy),
color (muted monochrome vs. rich, warm colors vs. natural landscape palette),
composition (single simplified figure vs. single detailed figure vs. multiple figures and background).
Three horses are shown in different artistic styles:
the first is an ancient Chinese ink painting with a stylized, lightly detailed horse;
the second is a realistic, anatomically accurate oil painting of a single horse in motion;
the third is a Western classical painting depicting multiple horses and riders in a lively outdoor scene.

The painting leaves a great impression on me. I think it shows the meaning of life. Each of the flowers is trying its best to grow and show its beauty, no matter which stage of life it is at. The painting gives me a deeper understanding of life.

Yesterday, I went to an amazing Chinese art festival. There were different stands where artists could demonstrate their skills! It was definitely an exciting experience for a foreign student like me. What caught my attention first was a 15th-century qinghua bowl in a breathtaking exhibition of Chinese porcelain. It vividly illustrated a dragon playing with a ball. Then I tried some paper cutting, that is, making images out of paper. It was difficult, but a lot of fun! With help from the artist, I managed to make one in the shape of a fish. Meanwhile, a woman at the next stand was using a needle and some thread to do some embroidery. It looked so pretty! Then I went into a section decorated like a traditional Chinese study, with two beautiful Chinese paintings of a pine tree and some bamboo hung on the walls. There was also an old man writing Chinese calligraphy; his writing was so free and elegant! Another man sitting next to him showed me how seal cutting works. Chinese characters are carved into small squares of stone and stamped onto paper with ink. He made one for me with my name in Chinese – pretty awesome!
