Are you an “I person” or an “E person”? These two personality labels in particular are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” and “E” refer to “introverted” and “extroverted” respectively.
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I” person can still be outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E” person.
According to psychologists, this idea of temporarily switching personalities is called “masking”. That is hiding your true personality in specific situations. “Human beings want to feel they belong, and they might become people - pleasers to do so,” wrote the MasterClass website.
Using the MBTI result to identify and describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day - to - day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don’t like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’.” “Why?” She asked back. “Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do?” It was then that I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that’s all it is — for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don’t define who you are.
24. In which of the following situations an “I” person may perform more sociably?
A. Having a conversation with an “E” person.
B. Wanting to feel someone’s sense of belonging.
C. Taking the personality test and accepting its result.
D. Staying with some friends with similar personalities.
25. What does the underlined word “masking” in paragraph 3 refer to?
A Pleasing. B. Escaping. C. Pretending. D. Controlling.
26. What does the author want to tell us by the example in paragraph 4?
A. The MBTI result is of great help to identify a person.
B. A “P” person is unwilling to make or stick to plans.
C. People need to follow the advice of the MBTI test.
D. Don’t take the MBTI result too seriously all the time.
27. What does the author think of the MBTI personality test?
A. It’s a good choice for a conversation starter.
B. It’s a must to quickly get to know a new friend.
C. It’s a perfect way to show your true personality.
D. It’s an effective means of predicting people’s behavior.
C
When delivering medications to patients, one of the most effective methods is direct injection (注射) into the bloodstream using a needle. But this can be an uncomfortable experience, especially for kids or adults with a fear of needles. While patients do have the option to take oral pills instead, drugs containing large molecules (分子) are not absorbed effectively this way.
Now, inspired by octopus suckers (章鱼吸盘), researchers from China and Switzerland have designed a needle-free alternative: a tiny, drug-filled, cup-like patch (贴片) that sticks to the inside of the cheeks. The device is easily accessible, and it can be removed at any time and the drug gets absorbed through the lining of the inner cheek, the team reports in a paper in Science Translational Medicine.
To test the design, the team 3D printed the suckers. They loaded each with the drug and stuck them inside the cheeks of three beagles, a kind of dog which has a similar inner cheek lining to humans. For comparison, they also delivered the drug to beagles via a pill. After three hours, the team found that drug blood concentrations in dogs with the patch were more than 150 times higher than in the dogs that took a tablet. They also found patches worked effectively for drugs with large molecules.
40 healthy human volunteers self-applied water-filled patches to see how well they would stay on while talking and moving their mouths. After 30 minutes, only five of the 40 patches had fallen off, which was because of improper placement. Most volunteers said they would prefer a patch over injections for daily applications.
Still, the team only tested the patch for a short time so they would need to find out what would happen if it was used repeatedly. They’d also need to determine which drugs would work with the technology: the target is large molecules, such as those used to treat obesity or osteoporosis, but they can’t be too large to fit in the cup.
28. Why do the researchers develop the patch?
A. To help patients overcome the fear of needles.
B To enable kids to swallow tablets smoothly.
C. To offer a better way of drug delivery.
D. To guarantee the efficiency of oral pills.
29. What does the research on dogs prove?
A. It is technologically possible to 3D print the patches.
B. The cheek lining of dogs is similar to that of humans.
C. Patches fall easily with their mouth movement.
D. Drugs are absorbed better through patches than pills.
30. Which of the following can best describe the device?
A. Innovative and profitable.
B. Effective and user-friendly.
C. Affordable and accessible.
D. Flexible and long-lasting.
31. What does the last paragraph stress?
A. The related issues to be solved.
B The risk of using patches repeatedly.
C. The way to identity large molecules.
D. The trouble of improving the technology.
D
Many people are embracing “quiet services” to avoid conversation especially in public spaces and businesses. For example, Sunday Salon in North Carolina offers silent haircuts, where customers can request no small talk, allowing them to relax during their appointment.
Similarly, Uber and Lyft riders can choose a “silent ride”, and some massage studios provide silent treatments, where therapists avoid engaging with clients. In Japan, some stores offer unique service where customers can hold a blue bag to signal that they do not want to be disturbed by salespeople.
Self-checkout systems, which are widespread in the U.S. allow customers to complete transactions without interacting with a clerk, further supporting the trend of avoiding social engagement. There are also quieter ways to spend free time, such as the TikTok trend of silent walking, where people wander alone without music or conversation. Silent Book Clubs, where people read books together in silence, are becoming popular in cities across the world, with nearly 1,500 chapters globally.
While some prefer silence to avoid potential awkwardness or unwanted conversations, experts caution that over-reliance on silence can lead to social isolation. Jessica Methot, a professor of human-resource management, argues that brief interactions, such as small talk, are vital for maintaining social connections and reducing loneliness. She notes that small talk, which constitutes a significant portion of our daily interactions, is essential for building relationships both personally and professionally.
However, for many people, these silent services offer an important short break. Salon owner Andrew Edwards explains that his customers often book silent hair appointments to catch up on work, relax, or simply take a break from constant communication. For some, silence has become an essential part of their routine in a fast-paced, always-connected world.
32. What is the common feature of the “quiet services” described in the text?
A. They rely on advanced digital technology.
B. They enable users to manage social contact.
C. They operate mainly in crowded urban areas.
D. They require professionally trained employees.
33. What does Jessica Methot stress about brief interactions?
A. They simplify daily routines. B. They help keep social bonds.
C. They enhance work efficiency. D. They reduce professional conflicts.
34. Why do some customers choose “quiet services” according to the text?
A. To develop a sense of personal focus. B. To maintain personal privacy in public areas.
C. To escape continuous social communication. D. To follow global trends like TikTok challenges.
35. What is the best title of this passage?
A. The Rise of Digital Services in Modern Life.
B. The Importance of Small Talk in Daily Interactions.
C. Social Isolation and Its Solutions in Urban Areas.
D. Quiet Services: A New Trend to Manage Social Interaction.

We’ re not just seeking relevant information to increase our chances of survival anymore. We fall into rabbit holes, scroll (滚屏) our feeds mindlessly, and watch video after video by clicking on the recommended links. ____37____ And we have lost control over the content we consume. Just as you try to eat healthily to improve your physical health, going on an information diet is a way to control what you consume to take care of your mental health. Here are some simple ways to start an information diet to break the information addiction.
Prevent unwanted information. ____38____ Make sure to set up filters. Try some apps to unsubscribe from unwanted emails.
Dress the table. Shape your environment to make sure you’re not overly tempted to have access to too much useless information. ____39____ For example, you can change your social media settings to reduce the number of notifications.
Add more offline foods to your content menu. Increase your levels of “offline foods” — content you can consume away from a screen and that you can purchase or download in advance.
____40____ It’s incredibly effective to block time for reading stuff online. If you’re really struggling with information addiction, you can even put a timer on. This will force you to prioritize information that really matters.

The school festival was buzzing with excitement, all because of a new contest called “Innovate Your Way.” This contest was all about making a costume that was as unique and creative as possible, showcasing what one loves the most.
Lily Adams was surrounded by classmates with cool ideas. One classmate said excitedly, “I’m going to be the whole solar system, with planets circling around me!” One boasted (吹嘘), “I’ll redefine innovation. I will become a walking smartphone from the future, showing the digital age with interactive apps and games.”
Meanwhile, another one came up with the idea to dress up as a live weather forecast. He planned to attach LED screens to his outfit, displaying different weather patterns. This costume would not just show the weather but also change with real-time updates, combining technology and creativity in a way the festival had never seen.
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily wasn’t sure what to do. Her friends had such amazing ideas, and she hadn’t even picked a costume yet. She shared her worries with her friend Noah, saying,” I can’t make up my mind. Every idea seems too hard to do or just not exciting enough.”
Noah, always wise, had a great suggestion. “Why don’t you make a costume about gardening? You love it, and it’s something unique to you,” he said. Lily was unsure because the contest was just a few days away. “I don’t know if there’s enough time to make something like that from the beginning,” she worried. But Noah encouraged her, “You have a special talent for making something wonderful out of simple things. Use what’s around you.”
Inspired by Noah’s words, Lily thought over her collection of plants and flowers. Arriving home, she noticed the pile of old gardening magazines and a forgotten green tarp(防水布)in the garage.

I spend about the same amount of time exercising as I did before. However, instead of doing IT between work and dinner, I get up at five AM and exercise. Many people think checking emails or messages on the bus to work or school and making a list of things to do can save time. But the thing that works well for me is having lots of clothes which are similar, so you don't have to think about what to put on in the morning. IT is a firefighting plane. The pilots have to be very experienced. They're going to pick up water from this lake. IT can be a dangerous job. The C, L, two fifteen is flying at one hundred forty kilometers per hour. Now the pilot must be very careful. If he makes a mistake, the plane will crash. It's time to open the water tanks on the plane. The plane picks up water from the lake. This is the most dangerous time for the crew, but the pilot does this job and picks up more than five thousand leaders of water. Then it's time to put out the fire. The pilot has to fly low over the trees to hit the fire. He also needs to wet the ground in front of the fire, so IT can't spread. The water drops on the fire. It's a good hit, but the fire is a big one. The fire rangers have to go back to the lake in just two minutes. The plane is ready again. The crew has to drop water twenty times to put out the fire at last.
