Must-Read Environmental Books
Silent Spring (1962)
Written by Rachel Carson, Silent Spring has been described as a landmark work of environmental writing. It focuses on the effects of pesticides (杀虫剂) on the environment, especially DDT, which was finally outlawed in 1972. The book led to a change in the United States pesticide policy (Ex) and played a key role in the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), a governmental organization in the US.
The End of Nature (1989)
The End of Nature describes the relationship between nature and humans. It expresses the idea that nature has now been influenced by humans in every way. According to author Bill McKibben, the idea of wilderness is lost, and nature is no longer intact. McKibben says that we need to change how we view and interact with nature.
Braiding Sweetgrass (2013)
Braiding Sweetgrass, written by Robin Wall Kimmerer, looks at the relationship between humans and the land. As a member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, Kimmerer ties lessons she learned from her culture and history to Western society’s view of plants and tries to show the importance plants and animals have in our world. Braiding Sweetgrass won the 2014 Sigurd F. Olson Nature Writing Award (SONWA).
The Uninhabitable Earth (2019)
This book by David Wallace-Wells provides a close look at how we treat the Earth and how our actions will shape both our own future and that of the planet. The Uninhabitable Earth looks ahead to the year 2100 and states that present actions will not be enough to avoid the effects of climate change. Its opening line is quite telling: “It is worse, much worse, than you think.”
1. Which book led to the creation of the EPA?
A. Silent Spring. B. The End of Nature.
C. Braiding Sweetgrass. D. The Uninhabitable Earth.
2. When was the book that won SONWA first printed?

For many people, barbecues are a chance to enjoy a meal with family and friends. For Stan Hays, however, barbecuing becomes his skill to feed people in need when the disaster happens.
The unique effort began in May 2011, when a severe tornado (龙卷风) hit Joplin, about two hours from Hays’ home. His wife asked him to help. So, he put out the word to his partners and headed down with his barbecue. “We thought we’d be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals,” Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.
It was a life-changing experience for Hays who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before. While preparing to head home, he and his friends Will Cleaver and Jeff Stith came to the realization. “A barbecue community is able to respond to disasters like this quickly,” Hays said. “So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief.”
During the last six years, the group has responded to almost 45 disasters across the United States, most recently Hurricanes Harvey and Irma and the wildfires in northern California. More than 6,800 volunteers have joined the effort, and the group often partners with other organizations to serve the meals.
“Barbecues are comfort food,” Hays said. “If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad stuff in your life. That’s worth it to me.”
4. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. The tornado happened in July 2011.
B. Supplies were far from enough for the victims.
C. Volunteers couldn’t meet the requirements.
D. The need for food was beyond Hays’ expectation.
5. What made Hays create the Operation BBQ Relief?
A. His wife’s suggestion. B. His preference for barbecues.
C. A voluntary activity in Joplin. D. The high earnings from barbecues.
6. Which of the following words can best describe Hays?
A. Warm-hearted. B. Strong-willed.
C. Broad-minded. D. Good-tempered.
7. What’s the text mainly about?
A. The bright future of barbecues.
B. The role of barbecues in voluntary activities.
C. An effective approach was used to rescue victims.
D. When disasters fall, they bring barbecues.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. A 7. D

【4题详解】
推理判断题。由第二段中的““We thought we’d be there three to four days, serving maybe 5,000 meals,” Hays said. But the need was there, so Hays and over 300 volunteers worked for 11 days to meet the need.(“我们以为我们会在那里呆上三到四天,提供大约5000顿饭,”Hays说。但需求是存在的,因此Hays和300多名志愿者工作了11天来满足需求)”可知,原本准备呆上三到四天的Hays最终了呆上了11天来满足需求,说明灾难之后,人们对食物的需要远远超出了Hays的想象。故选D项。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。由第三段中的“It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before.(这对Hays来说是一次改变生活的经历,他以前从未组织过任何类型的大型志愿活动)”和“So, before we left, we put together a plan to create the Operation BBQ Relief.(因此,在我们离开之前,我们制定了一项计划,创建the Operation BBQ Relief)”可知,是Hays在Joplin的一次志愿救灾经历让他成立了the Operation BBQ Relief这个组织。故选C项。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文可知,Hays积极去做志愿者帮助处于灾难中的人,并成立一个非盈利组织给灾难中的幸存者提供食物,由此可推知他是热心肠的(Warm-hearted)。故选A项。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段““Barbecues are comfort food,” Hays said. “If you just lost your house or a loved one, getting a hot meal would remind you of the barbecues you had in the backyard and make you forget about the bad stuff in your life. That's worth it to me.”(Hays说:“烧烤是一种安慰食物。“如果你刚刚失去了房子或心爱的人,一顿热饭会让你想起你在后院烧烤,让你忘记生活中不好的事情。这对我来说是值得的。”)”以及通读全文可知,在Hays为一次龙卷风后的幸存者提供烧烤食物后,他和同伴们成立了Operation BBQ Relief 非盈利组织,去帮助灾难中的幸存者,为他们提供热腾腾的烧烤食物,D项“当灾难降临时,他们会带来烧烤”符合文意。故选D项。

Guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and most governments recommend (推荐) that adults do at least 150 minutes per week of moderate (适度的) physical activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous (剧烈的) physical activity. Plenty of people want to meet this level of exercise but find it difficult to do so because of the busy lives many of us lead.
However, a team of researchers has discovered that even if you only have time to exercise once or twice a week, you can still get the same benefits as those who exercise more frequently.
The study found that people named “weekend warriors”— in other words, those who shorten their exercise to just Saturday or Sunday — can lose the same amount of weight as those who exercise every day as long as they meet the recommendations set out by the WHO.
Researchers collected results from more than 9,600 volunteers, aged between 20 and 59 years old, who took part in the US National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey between 2011 and 2018.The team examined the volunteers’ general body fat using a special technique and through other measurements such as BMI. Next, they explored the connection between these and physical activity levels, using data from three groups: inactive, “weekend warriors” and frequently active. Results showed that the “weekend warriors” and the frequently active volunteers had lower body fat and lower BMIs.
The research team believes their findings will be especially welcomed by people whose jobs mean they sit for most of the day.
“The weekend warrior method is worth recommending to people who cannot meet the recommended frequency in the guidelines,” said lead author Lihua Zhang, a healthcare scientist at Fuwai Hospital and professor at Peking Union Medical College in Beijing, China. “Our study could offer them another choice to keep fit.”
“The key message is that people should be active in any way that suits their lifestyle,” said Dr. Beverly Tchang, assistant professor at Weill Cornell Medicine in New York. “All kinds of exercise are welcome, whether that be running, hiking, cycling, climbing, or other choices.”
8. What does the underlined word “benefits” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Feelings. B. Problems. C. Services. D. Advantages.
9. Of the following people, who would most welcome the study findings?
A. Tour guides. B. Taxi drivers. C. School teachers. D. Traffic policemen.
10. What is Lihua Zhang’s attitude towards the weekend warrior method?
A. Carefree. B. Doubtful. C. Supportive. D. Uncertain.
11. What is the main focus of Dr. Beverly Tchang words?
A. Daily exercise matters. B. Running is the best choice.
C. Any activity is better than none. D. Small lifestyle changes will work.
【答案】8. D 9. B 10. C 11. C

【8题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第一段“Guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and most governments recommend (推荐) that adults do at least 150 minutes per week of moderate (适度的) physical activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous (剧烈的) physical activity. Plenty of people want to meet this level of exercise but find it difficult to do so because of the busy lives many of us lead.(世界卫生组织(WHO)和大多数政府的指导方针建议成年人每周至少进行150分钟的适度体育活动或每周75分钟的剧烈体育活动。很多人都想达到这种水平的锻炼,但却发现很难做到,因为我们很多人都过着忙碌的生活)”提到WHO 建议成人每周达到一定运动量,很多人因忙碌难以实现。以及划线单词句中“…even if you only have time to exercise once or twice a week, you can still get the same benefits as those who exercise more frequently.( 即使你每周只有时间锻炼一到两次,你仍然可以得到和那些经常锻炼的人一样的benefits)”指出“每周运动 1-2 次”与“更频繁运动”能获得相同“benefits”,结合后文“减重、体脂和BMI更低”的具体结果,可推断“benefits”指“好处、优势”,和D选项“Advantages(优势)”意思相近。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“The research team believes their findings will be especially welcomed by people whose jobs mean they sit for most of the day.(研究小组认为,他们的研究结果会特别受到那些工作意味着一天中大部分时间都要坐着的人的欢迎)”可推知,研究结果特别受“工作中大部分时间久坐的人”欢迎。

It was a quiet Saturday afternoon in the small town of Maple Ridge. I had just left George’s Hardware Store, carrying a few things I needed for some home repairs. I was a bit behind schedule, so I hurried to my car, put the items in the trunk (后备箱), and then shut it.
As I reached into my pocket for my keys, I realized that I didn’t have them. My heart sank as I rushed to the driver’s side door. Sure enough, my keys and phone were sitting on the front seat, locked inside. “Seriously?” I sighed, kicking the tire.
Just then, a teenager on a red bike rode up. He looked about 16, with messy brown hair and a worn backpack. His bike looked just as worn as the rest of him, but he pedaled (骑车) gracefully and effortlessly. And he had a friendly smile on his face. Noticing I was in trouble, he asked what had happened.
After I explained my situation, he offered his phone at once, suggesting that I call someone for help. Though grateful, I told him that even if I called my wife, who had the spare key, she wouldn’t be able to bring it since this was our only car.
The boy listened carefully, thought for a moment, and asked where my house was. When I told him it was on Morris Street, he glanced at his bike and suggested that he ride over, grab the spare key from my wife, and bring it back.
I hesitated, realizing it would be an 11-kilometre round trip, almost an hour’s ride, and I suddenly felt bad for the boy. But before I could say anything, he handed me his phone and insisted that I call my wife and tell her to have the key ready. His confidence and determination left me with little room to argue. I agreed and made the call.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
As soon as I hung up, the boy wasted no time.

An hour later, as I saw the boy cycling toward me, my worries were gone.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 As soon as I hung up, the boy wasted no time. He quickly dialed a number on his phone. I assumed it was to let his family know where he was going, so they wouldn’t worry. He adjusted his backpack, making sure it was secure for the long ride. Then, with a determined look in his eye, he got back on his bike and started pedaling towards Morris Street. I watched him until he was out of sight, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt for troubling him, but also admiring his sense of responsibility and willingness to help.
An hour later, as I saw the boy cycling toward me, my worries were gone. As he approached, I could see beads of sweat on his forehead, but his face was lit up with a sense of accomplishment. I thanked him sincerely, offering him some money as a token of my appreciation. He politely declined, saying it was just a small thing he could do to help out a neighbor. With that, he got back on his bike and rode off, leaving me with a profound sense of gratitude and a reminder that kindness still exists in this world.

It was a life-changing experience for Hays, who had never organized any type of large voluntary effort before.

Guidelines from the World Health Organization (WHO) and most governments recommend (推荐) that adults do at least 150 minutes per week of moderate (适度) physical activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous (剧烈的) physical activity.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
What is the Best Way to Learn a Language?
There is no “best” way to learn a language, because everyone learns slightly differently. ____12____Here are some of the most frequent recommendations.
◆Watch foreign language TV and movies.
Not everyone has the opportunity to be exposed to the environment where the native language is spoken or to speak to native speakers. TV and movies offer a good chance to hear native speakers use the language.____13____Watching their movies and TV shows helps you better understand their culture.
◆Get out of your comfort zone.
This is a lesson for life, not just for learning a language! Get out there and do something that scares you. Talk to a foreigner in their language.____14____ Write someone a message in their language. Whatever that zone is where you feel safe and relaxed and easy, get out of that zone because you can learn nothing from it. Push yourself and you’ll see that it’s not so bad in this world.
◆____15____
Don’t think of language as a tool, think of it as a musical instrument. When you learn three chords on guitar, you can play hundreds of songs. Words are the same. For example, take the word “real”, and look at its different forms: real, really, realise, realistic, realism, realist, unreal. . .
◆Make mistakes, it’s fine, it’s even great!
Shyness and fear of making mistakes is common. However, nobody cares if you make mistakes. When you speak a foreign language, everyone knows it’s not your mother tongue and they’re already impressed that you’re speaking it at all.____16____
A. Avoid making mistakes.
B. TV and movies solve that problem easily.
C. Don’t just memorize words, play with them.
D. Order food from a French restaurant in French.
E. Talk, make mistakes, fall down, get back up, that’s life.
F. Besides, learning a language is a doorway into another culture.
G. However, some methods appear to be more effective than others.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
