During the Warring States Period, there lived a man named Su Qin. He tried to get a job as a government official but failed. When he arrived home, his family looked down on him and didn’t want to speak to him. His sister-in-law treated him worst and even refused to offer any food to him. Su Qin felt very sad, but he didn’t give up on himself. He studied hard every day, and finally came up with the idea of “zong heng principle (纵横术)”.
Later on, Su Qin travelled to many states and explained his idea to the kings. He told them that small states should unite together to fight against the strongest state, Qin. Luckily, his idea was accepted by two states, Yan and Zhao. Then the kings of the two states asked him to persuade other states to accept his idea. Finally, Su Qin united six states and became their prime minister.
One day, Su Qin passed by his hometown. His parents, brother, wife and sister-in-law all came out to welcome him. When he saw his sister-in-law, he laughed. He still remembered how she treated him in the past. Then he asked her, “You were rude to me before. But why do you welcome me now?” His sister-in-law answered, “You are an official now, so I dare not treat you like before.”

Yang Shi showed great intelligence when he was a child. He entered school to study at four and could read and write poems at the age of seven. He was widely called a talented man and well-known everywhere.
One day, Yang Shi and one of his schoolmates had different views on a certain question. To get a correct answer, he went to visit his teacher Cheng Yi, a famous philosopher (哲学家). At Cheng Yi’s house, however, the doorman told him, “Mr Cheng is napping (小睡). You’d better go back and come later.” Yang replied, “It doesn’t matter. I’ll wait here until Mr Cheng wakes up.”
