My family lost almost everything in the little-known but worst flood of Louisiana last
year.It began raining in mid-August and didn't stop for days. There was talk that the local
rivers were going to crest(到达洪峰)and cause some serious flooding. We lived somewhat
close to the Amite River, but old neighbors told us our neighborhood hadn't flooded in over
100 years. We thought we had several days to plan on how to shelter.
On August 13,I woke up and headed toward the river. Some of the lower areas were
collecting water but there was no standing water anywhere near my house or even my
neighborhood.I went back home and told my wife we should probably get some supplies in
case this got serious;that maybe we should even pack a car in case we needed to leave though
I was very certain there was nothing to worry about.
About 30 minutes into slowly packing,my wife's cousin came and told us to evacuate(
at once.I looked behind her and noticed my entire yard underwater and the waterline only
about a half-inch from going over my doorstep and into my house.
I was floored. We had no time!My wife and I packed up both our cars in about 10
minutes with only our most precious memories.Everything else we had built during a 10-year
marriage was left behind. We evacuated about 5 miles east away from the river to my wife's
grandmothers. After being there for about an hour, the river was coming. We evacuated a
second time in as many hours to her cousin's house even further east. After only an hour,we
found the river was on the way and we had to leave, again.
We evacuated three times that day.I drove back through the flooded waters at some point
because we left our cat. When I got back to our house,I walked through knee-deep water
filled with trash and our waterlogged belongings(浸水的财物).Got the cat safely though.a

The Oxford English Dictionry(OED)is the most trusted dictionary of the English
language, but its creation was a great task that took over 70 years.
In 1857,a London language society decided that existing English dictionaries were not
nough and suggesteda meeynewon The project relied onortoed Engis
literature and collect example sentences for words on small pieces of paper. However,
progress was very slow for the first two decades. In 1879,Oxford University Press agreed to
publish the dictionary and James Murray was appointed editor. He restarted the volunteer
program and built a small iron shed()called the"Seriptorium",in his garden to work on
the project. He even paid his children to sort the millions of small pieces. At first,Murray
thought the work would take 10 years. But after five years, the first section was published,
covering only the words from“A”to“Ant”-it was clear that the dictionary would be much
larger than anyone had imagined.
To speed up the work, three other editors were appointed to work with Murray. Each
editor and their team worked on different sections of the alphabet. After decades of effort, the
final volume()was published in 1928.Sadly,Murray himself did not live to see the project
completed. The final dictionary filled 10volumes with over 250,000 words.
The English language never stops changing,so the OED is never finished.Soon after the
first edition was completed, editors began working on a supplement().In the 1980s,the
彩
dictionary entered the digital age.The entire text was typed into computers, leading to a 20-
volume second edition in 1989.This was followed by a CD-ROM version (and,in the
year 2000,the OED Online was invented.
Today, the OED Online is updated every three months with new words and revised ones.
What started as a great idea in the 19th century continues to grow, remaining the top record of
the English language and its ongoing development.

Do you remember the last time you took a language course? When you finished the
course, your language abilities were different from your classmates'.
These differences exist in every field. But in my field, the psychology()of second-
language learning, one question remains unclear:why is it easier for some people to learn a
new language than for others?Recently,I was excited to learn that scientist Xiaogian Chai and
her team at MeGill University have been studying this question. They looked at students in a
12-week French course and found big differences in how much each student improved.
For their study, the researchers scanned (the brains of native English speakers
before the course started. They collected samples()of the participants'French speaking
and reading before and after the course. The results showed that the strength of connections
between different resting parts of a persons brain could predict()how much their specific
(language skills would improve.Specifically, improvement in reading depended on
the connection between the brain's visual word-form area and another.Improvement in
speaking, however, depended on the connection between the speech-related area and two
other regions. For both skills, stronger brain connections before the course were linked to
greater improvement after the training.
These findings lead to more questions:If brain connectivity predicts learning, how can
we predict the connectivity itself?I can't help but connect this to research on bilingual(
education, which shows that a strong first language is the key to learning a strong second
language. So,the participants'pre-existing English skills might have influenced their brain
connections.
As we understand more about how the brain learns language,we can turn this knowledge
into teaching techniques that play to each students'strengths. The next generation of middle
schoolers is entering a more globalized world than ever, and they are going to need our help.
32.Why does the writer ask a question at the beginning of the text?
A.To share a personal doubt.
u多,。
B.To challenge the reader.
C.To summarize a studyD.To introduce the topic.
33.How did Xiaoqian Chai and her team perform their study?
A.By teaching students different memory skills.
B.By asking participants about their learning habits.
C.By scanning brains and collecting speech samples.
D.By comparing course grades from different'schools.
34.What predicted language skill improvement in the study?
A.The participants'age and background.
B.The intelligence level of the participants.
C.The amount of time spent in the classroom.
D.The connections'strength of the brain parts.
35.What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The application of the study.
B.The ways of English learning.
C.The importance of globalization.
D.The number of middle schoolers.
