While many of us use smartphones, some people are going back to “dumbphones (笨手机)” that can only make calls, send messages, check maps and do little else.
According to Statista, revenue (收入) in the world of the dumbphone market reached about 10.6 billion dollars (76.7 billion yuan) in 2024.
Nostalgia (怀旧) might be a reason why dumbphones get popular again. Many people had a dumbphone as their first phone, so they feel nostalgic for these classic phones, Ernest Doku, an expert on mobile phones, told the BBC.
What’s more, Gen Zers want to cut screen time. Fjolla Arifi, a 24-year-old from the US, used to spend an average of eight hours and 44 minutes a day on her smartphone. But now using a dumbphone for just one week has made a big difference. “I feel like I’m adding more to my conversations with friends without my smartphone. I wasn’t just watching my phone to see if I received texts or emails,” she wrote on Buzzfeed News.
1.What can dumbphones do?
2.Why do Gen Zers use dumbphones?
3.Who does Fjolla Arifi spend more time with now?
4.Which do you think is better, the smartphone or the dumbphone? Give your opinions. (Write 30 words or more.)
【答案】1.They can (only) make calls, send messages, check maps and do little else. 2.Because they want to cut screen time./They want to cut screen time./To cut screen time. 3.Her friends./ Friends. 4. I think the smartphone is better. We can use it to look up words and information online. We can also go online to find out what’s going on around the world./I think the dumbphone is better because we must cut screen time. It’s good for our eyes and health. And we should spend more time with our family and friends. (言之有理即可)

阅读短文,然后根据内容回答问题。
When it comes to the letter grade on your test or homework, you might notice that there is no letter E. Have you ever thought about why that is so?
In the A, B, C, D and F grading system, the first four letters are typically considered passing grades. An F in this system simply stands for “fail”. The word “fail” happens to start with the letter F, which seems to leave out the letter E. The fact of the matter is that any letter can mean “not-passing” or “fail”. Some schools have U grade for “unsatisfactory”, or I grade for “incomplete”.
Even with all this said, we should also point out that E grade actually has been used pretty commonly throughout the history of letter grades in the US.
The first college in the US to use a letter grading system like the ones we use today is Mount Holyoke College. In 1897, they began to use the following grading scale:
A: 95~100% (excellent) B: 85~94% (good) C: 76~84% (fair)
D: 75% (barely passed) E: below 75% (failed)
We can see the inclusion of E instead of F.
Gradually, the letter grading system became more popular throughout the US. However, many schools decided to drop the E grade and go straight to F. There is no evidence (证据) to really support this, but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.
Why do we have letter grades? Well, part of the reason is that they made grading simpler during a time of great change for schools. As the 20th century began, growing cities and an increase in immigration led to larger school classrooms. Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.
Today, more and more people argue that letter grades don’t fully reflect (反映) students’ learning. However, as teachers try to improve grading methods, many parents continue to favor the letter grades they got as kids. They are familiar (熟悉) and easy for parents to understand. So while they might not be perfect, the letter grades probably aren’t going away any time soon.
5.What does an F stand for in the A, B, C, D and F grading system?
6.What is one possible explanation for dropping the E grade?
7.What did most teachers think of the letter grading system in the 20th century?
8.Which letter do you want in the A, B, C, D and F grading system? How can you get it? Write 30 words or more.
【答案】5.It stands for “fail”. 6.Teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”. 7.They thought it was an easy, fair, and clear way to grade students. 8.I want an A because it represents excellence. To get it, I will study hard, complete homework on time, and participate actively in class. Consistency and focus are key to achieving top grades.
【导语】本文讲述了字母评分系统中为何没有E等级的历史原因、E等级的使用情况以及字母评分系统存在的意义与现状。
5.根据“An F in this system simply stands for ‘fail’.”可知,F代表“fail”,即“不及格”。故填It stands for “fail”.
6.根据“....but one possible explanation is that teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for ‘excellent’.”可知,许多学校决定放弃E等级的一种可能的解释是,老师们担心一些学生和家长会把E等级误认为“优秀”。故填Teachers were worried that some students and parents might mistake E for “excellent”.
7.根据“As the 20th century began...Most teachers at that time thought this new letter grading system was an easy, fair and clear way to grade students.”可知,当时的大多数教师认为,这种新的字母评分系统是一种简单、公平且清晰的学生评分方式。故填They thought it was an easy, fair, and clear way to grade students.
8.开放性作答,结合实际,言之有理即可。参考答案为I want an A because it represents excellence. To get it, I will study hard, complete homework on time, and participate actively in class. Consistency and focus are key to achieving top grades.

Every Saturday night Mama would sit down by the kitchen table and count out the money Papa had brought home.
“For the rent (房租).” Mama would count out the big silver pieces.
“For the groceries.” Another group of coins.
“I’ll need a notebook,” That would be my brother Nels or me.
Mama would put one or two coins to the side. We would watch with great interest. At last, Papa would ask, “Is that all?” And when Mama nodded, we could relax a little, Mama would look up and smile, “Good, we do not have to go to the Bank.” We were so proud of Mama’s Bank Account (银行账户), It gave us such a warm, safe feeling.
When Nels graduated from grammar school, he wanted to go on to high school. “It will cost a little money,” he said.
We all gathered around the table, I took down a box and laid it in front of Mama. This was the “Little Bank”, which was used for sudden emergencies (紧急事件), Mama counted out the money in the Little Bank.
There was not enough. “We do not want to go to the Bank, right?” she said. We all shook our heads.
“I will work in Dillon’s grocery after school,” Nels answered.
“I will give up smoking,” Dad added.
“I will look after the children every Friday night,” I said.
Mama gave us a bright smile and wrote down a number. “That’s quite enough.” We all felt good because we didn’t have to go down town and draw money out of Mama’s Bank Account.
That was twenty years ago.
Last year I sold my first story, I hurried to give the check to Mama. “For you,” I said, “to put in your Bank Account.”

Money may not buy happiness, but it helps. Many teenagers want to learn how to manage money before going out into the world. Be smart with your money. This idea is raised by Dr. Mara Harvey, a money expert. The following are some of her tips.
Learn to make money. Ask parents or neighbors if you can do chores to make pocket money. These could include washing a car or taking the dog for a walk. Agree on the value of different jobs before you start. In this way, you can also improve your communication skills, which will help when you have a grown-up job, too.
Help your money grow. Money can’t grow if it’s sitting inside a piggy bank. Put your money in the bank and you can get interest (利息). Save your money in the long run. One day you may feel surprised at how much money you have.
Make a plan. If you have a big event, such as a holiday coming up, it might mean you will need to spend more of your pocket money. Try making a plan for spending and saving. Write down how much money you have and what you are spending. Then it will help you to control your money.
Spend your money wisely. Figure out (算出) how much you can reasonably (合理地) spend each month. Spend your money on what you truly need. Then try to cut down on spending. For example, rather than eating out, you can choose to cook at home.

My 100 days without a mobile phone
Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time? As a busy modern person, staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothersome (麻烦的).
One day, I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notifications (通知) off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the mobile phone more often than before. So I simply stopped using my mobile phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. However, after three weeks, I started noticing some changes which I liked:
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (注意力集中的). While doing something before, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found the urge (冲动) was already not that strong and my ability to focus improved.
I also discovered that the world is a beautiful place. I used to look at it through my camera mostly— take a photo, post it online and get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I sensed the seasons change. I could understand the beauty of the world and I did not need anyone else to prove (证明) the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

During the break times between classes, Xiao Jingsheng from Beijing Shangdi Experimental School often rushed to the toilet then back to class with no time for anything else. But now that has changed. “I can have more time to rest and share interesting things with my classmates,” said the 14-year-old.
Starting this fall term, students at primary and middle schools in many parts including Liaoning Province have longer breaks between classes. It has been changed from 10 minutes to15 minutes. So students can spend more time outdoors for their physical and mental (心理的) well-being.
To help children better enjoy break-time activities, some schools have mixed break time with labor (劳动) education. For example, they open planting areas and animal feeding zones for students.
“We have welcomed new friends to our school—some ducks and rabbits!” said Zhang Boren, a 13-year-old from Beijing 101 Middle School Kuangda Campus. “During the breaks, some play with these cute animals, while others exercise on the playground. We get closer to nature, which is refreshing and relaxing.”
As the break time is longer, it is also important to make sure everyone is safe. PE teachers are busy keeping an eye on students playing on the ground.

请认真阅读下面短文,并根据短文内容回答问题或完成任务。
After a game like football, the players might get an X-ray in the hospital if they hurt their legs or arms. A dentist can use X-rays to look at teeth. And airport workers use an X-ray machine to check objects before a plane leaves. Nowadays, X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields.
X-rays were first discovered by a German scientist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845 – 1923). He found them quite by accident in 1895. One day, he discovered that an unknown kind of radiation (放射线) could hardly pass through hard objects like bones (骨头). Later, Röntgen took a photo of his wife's hand. It clearly showed her ring and her bones. That was the first X-ray photo in the world.
Why is there an“X” in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. He just knew that X-rays were new and useful for science. In fact, X-rays soon became an important tool in medicine. With the help of X-rays, doctors could see inside the human body for the first time without surgery (外科手术).
Röntgen was awarded the first Nobel Prize (诺贝尔奖) in physics in 1901 for his discovery. When he was asked what he was thinking at the moment of discovery, he replied, “I didn’ t think, I investigated (研究).” Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents (专利权) on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.
53.Where is X-ray technology used?
54.When were X-rays discovered?
55.Why did Röntgen name the ray“X-ray”?
56.What do you think of Röntgen? Why? Write 30 words or more.
【答案】53.X-ray technology is widely used in medicine and other fields. 54.X-rays were discovered in 1895. 55.Röntgen named the ray “X-ray” because he couldn’t explain exactly how it worked. 56.Röntgen was a great scientist who made an important discovery that benefited the whole world. He was also very generous and selfless, giving away his Nobel Prize money to his university and not taking out any patents on X-rays to ensure that his discovery could be freely used by everyone.
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了科学家Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen如何发现的X射线以及X射线的应用领域等。

54.根据“He found them quite by accident in 1895.”可知,X射线于1895年被发现。故填X-rays were discovered in 1895.
55.根据“Why is there an ‘X’ in the word X-ray? It’s because Röntgen couldn’t explain exactly how it worked.”可知,因为Röntgen无法准确解释它是如何工作的,所以给其命名为“X-ray”。故填Röntgen named the ray “X-ray” because he couldn’t explain exactly how it worked.
56.开放性试题,答案合理即可。根据“Röntgen gave away his Nobel Prize money to his university. And he never took out any patents on X-rays, to make sure that the world could freely make use of his discovery.”可知,Röntgen把他的诺贝尔奖金捐给了他的大学。而且他从未为X射线申请过任何专利,以确保世界可以自由地利用他的发现,故可知他是一个无私的人。故填Röntgen was a great scientist who made an important discovery that benefited the whole world. He was also very generous and selfless, giving away his Nobel Prize money to his university and not taking out any patents on X-rays to ensure that his discovery could be freely used by everyone.

Mama looked at me, surprisingly. “There is no account,” she said. “in all my life, I’ve never been inside a bank.”
And when I couldn’t answer, Mama said seriously, “It is not good for little ones to be afraid to not feel safe.”

I go to school five days a week, and I have two days off—Saturday and Sunday. I start to relax on Friday night because I’m tired from a week of classes and tests. I usually go to the movies with my friends.
I hardly ever get up early on weekends. I often have breakfast at 9:30 a. m. After breakfast, I go to the gym (健身房). If I don’t go in the mornings, I won’t have the motivation (动力) to go later. After lunch, I usually go outside with my dog. We often go to the park and play there. Sometimes I go roller skating (滑旱冰) near the park with my friends. If it’s rainy or snowy, I’ll stay at home to watch TV, listen to music or read. Sometimes I do something special on weekends. I help in the Children’s Hospital twice a month.

“May we all blessed with longevity.Though miles apart, we are still able to share the beauty of the moon together (但愿人长久,千里共婵娟)”, wrote Su Shi, a poet during the Song Dynasty, in his well-known poem to his younger brother Su Zhe.
The moon is at its brightest on the 15th day of the eighth month of the lunar calendar. On this day, people celebrate Mid-Autumn Festival. It has been enjoying great popularity all over the country. In ancient China, that day was a harvest (收获) festival because crops (庄稼) were harvested during that period. It was a time for relaxation and celebration.
Just like Thanksgiving in Western countries, families also try to get together for the Mid-Autumn Festival in China. Usually, no matter how far away or how busy they are, people will try to return home for the celebration.
The Mid-Autumn has its own special food just as other traditional Chinese holidays. People eat moon cakes with fillings such as sugar and eggs. The round shape of the cake makes it look like the full moon. The full moon and moon cakes stand for family reunion (团聚).
With the beautiful moon up in the sky, people sit together, enjoy the full moon, eat moon cake and fruits, share the stories, and express the best wishes for the family members and friends who live far away.
45.Who did Su Shi write the poem to in Paragraph One?
46.Why was the Mid-Autumn Festival a harvest festival in ancient China?

“Sometimes the ground can be wet in the morning, so we tell the students to do more upper body exercises to avoid running and slipping (滑倒),” said one PE teacher.
