The bed should be reserved as a place for sleep, but people tend to read an iPad a lot in bed
before they go to sleep.
Charles Czeisler,a professor at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues got a small group
of people for an experiment. For five days in a row,the people read either a paper book or an iPad
for four hours before sleep.Their sleep patterns were monitored all night. Before and after each trial
period, the people took hourly blood tests to paint a day-long picture of just how much melatonin
(褪黑激素)was in their blood at any given time.
When subjects read on the iPad as compared to the paper books, they reported feeling less
sleepy at night and less active the following morning.People also took longer to fall asleep on the
iPad nights, and the blood tests showed that their melatonin secretion()was delayed by an hour
and a half.
The researchers conclude in today's journal article that given the rise of e-readers and the
increasingly widespread use of e-things among children and adolescents, more research into the
long-term consequences of these devices on health and safety is urgently needed.Charles Czeisler
and his colleagues go on,in the research paper,to note:"Reading an iPad in bed may increase
cancer risk.”
However, software has been developed that can reduce some of the blue light from the screens
of phones and computers according to time of day,and there are also glasses that are made to filter
(short wavelengths. While they seem like a logical solution for the nighttime tech users,it
needs more research.
28.In Charles Czeisler's experiment, all the subjects were asked to

Sixty-five million years ago,an asteroid()that crashed on the Earth led to the
disappearance of the largest animals that had ever walked on our planet-the dinosaurs. At least,
this is what some scientists believe. But that accident happened so long ago.People have come to
believe that we are free of threats from asteroids and everything else from space.
However, what happened on Feb.15,2013 was a reminder that we're just as yulnerable as the
dinosaurs once were.Two objects from space-a meteor()and an asteroid called 2012 DA14-
visited the Earth's atmosphere on the same day.The former fell in Russia, injuring 1,200 people,
while the latter passed by the Earth at a record-setting close distance.
Scientists had been expecting the asteroid since last year, but the meteor was a surprise.
NASA's telescope system only detects asteroids at least 50 meters in diameter(),which is just
about the size of 2012 DA14.But the meteor was much smaller, which made it harder to see.
But what if we do see an asteroid that is headed right for the Earth? There are several possible
ways in which the dangerous asteroid could be made to change its orbit ()Which method is
the best depends on several factors and most importantly, how much time we have to stop it.
If there is enough time before the hit,we can send off a heavy spacecraft to travel alongside the
asteroid. The gravity from the spacecraft would gradually change the rock's orbit.Besides that,
scientists could one day use sun-powered lasers to either make the asteroid disappear or change its
course. If there's not enough time,we'll have to go after the asteroid with a spacecraft and change
its orbit with a crash. Finally,if things are truly desperate, there will be only one choice left-to use
a nuclear bomb. That could turn the asteroid into a meteor shower, which would be even more
dangerous.
32.The author mentioned the asteroid that led to the dinosaurs'dying out to
A.show that asteroids fall from space frequently
B.warn people about the possible danger of objects falling from space
C.inform readers about the constant threats the Earth faces
D.suggest that there are still many mysteries about the universe
33.The underlined word"vulnerable"in the second paragraph probably means"
A.unprotected
B.lonely
C.stupid
D.self-important

Lisa Holman was a 45-year-old mother. One night, she told her family that she would visit and
get dinner with one of her old friends in the area of Helena,Alabama.Helena was usually only
about a half an hour's drive from her house where she lived in Chelsea,Alabama.
When Lisa hadn't returned home by 11 pm,the family started to get a bit worried because Lisa
rarely stayed out that late. They called Lisa's phone but didn't get any answer.Next they texted her
saying please call back as soon as she saw the text but never heard back. Her family knew that
something wrong might have happened to Lisa.
The family then reached out to Lisa's friend with whom she had dinner that evening. When
they got in contact with her,she was surprised that Lisa had not come home yet.According to Lisa's
friend, she hadn't heard anything from Lisa and just assumed that she had gotten home safely after
she left to drive home at around 9 pm.Lisa left in fine spirits and was totally normal. She was not
drunk or under the influence of anything so there was no concern for her safety of going home
alone.
The family sat up all night wondering what was happening and their biggest fear began to sink
in.They thought about calling the police that evening but the police typically don't define a person
missing unless there is no contact for 24 hours so all the family could do was sit home and wait.
It was a very long night for the whole family. The family sat up all night pondering if
something happened to her.Was she kidnapped?Who would want to hurt her?
Early the next morning,Lisa's sister Kathy,and Lisa's 17-year-old son,Jackson couldn't sit

information.
Yours,
Li Hua
