Today, i'd like to tell you some new year's traditions around the world. Many cultures have traditions meant to ward off bad luck when celebrating the new year. This often involves using fireworks, like in my hometown, beijing. And there are other ways people do IT, too. In scotland, for example, people hold bond fire celebrations. Men from villages walk through the streets with giant lacing fireballs over their heads. These fireballs represent the sun, and they are supposed to clean the coming year. In panorama, people use bond fires to burn pictures of popular celebrities and political figures. These pictures represent the old year. Burning them brings a fresh start for the new year. Of course, some traditions meant to avoid bad luck do not invoke fire at all. For example, just before the new year, people in landmark find the highest services they can and jump from IT as a new yeah starts. This is so they can jump into january. The hope is that they leave behind the bad spirits and bad luck of the previous year and enter a new year full of promise and new beginnings. Good morning, classmates. Dear Tom,
Glad to receive your letter. And I'm writing to tell you something about Chinese high
school students'physical exercise.
With the increasing pressure from the national college entrance exam, more and more
students have to sacrifice the time for sports to prepare for the exam, which is so important
for their future development. They only have one P.E.class a week, obviously not enough.
Actually, most of the students are eager to take part in sports, but they are so occupied with
their study.
In my view, although it is important for them to have a better performance in the exam,
health is equally important.Without a strong body,we would achieve nothing in our life.I
hope all students can reorganize their timetable and try to build up their body.
Yours,
Li Hua

The young lady who looked anxious at first now seemed as relaxed as me.We all
walked to our houses which were just two doors away.As my mother applied medicine to my
arms and legs,I was asked to explain why I ran away from our new neighbor, the young lady.
After listening to what I said patiently,my new neighbor couldn't help laughing. She told us
that she moved here just several days ago and was new to the neighborhood. She had gone
jogging that evening.
My new neighbor explained that she was walking behind me when she heard footsteps
following her.She decided to run when she saw me start running. It turned out that what she
had heard was the neighborhood watch group checking the street. When I fell, she went to
help me up,which unfortunately led to my screaming out in fear. The night ended with our

One of the world's oldest shared traditions,New Year's celebrations take many forms, but most
cultures have one thing in common-letting one's hair down after a long, hard year.
For much of the countries this involves drinking wines with friends until the sun comes up,
seeing out the old year with bonfires and flares. But others have rather more curious habits.
In Finland, people pour molten lead()into cold water to predicate the new year by the
shape the metal sets in.If the metal set represents a ship,it is said to foretell to travel long,if it's a
ball,it means a good luck.
In Denmark, people stand on chairs and jump off together as the clock strikes midnight,it
means literally leaping into the new year. The Danes also throw plates at their friends'homes during
the night before new year-the more pieces you find outside your door in the morning, the more
popular you are said to be.
The Dutch build massive bonfires with their Christmas trees and eat sugary donuts-one of
many cultures to consume round New Year's foods traditionally believed to represent good fortune.
Spaniards,in turn,swallow()a dozen grapes before the stroke of midnight, each fruit
representing a month that will either be sweet or sour.
In the Philippines,revellers()wear polka dots for good luck, while in some countries of
South America people wear brightly coloured underwear to attract fortune-red for love and yellow
for financial success.
Despite regional and cultural differences, for most the New Year's festivities are a chance to let
off steam(宣泄感情)before the annual cycle starts all over again.

A study presented on May 21st at the meeting of the Acoustical Society of America finds that
smaller, thinner people seem to have more sensitive hearing than the big and fat.
If you ever got bullied in the schoolyard, you might have wished for some sort of superpower:
like flying in the air or having the ability to completely disappear. Now scientists at the College of
Wooster in Ohio say that you might have had a skill you didn't realize:the mysterious ability to
hear something dangerous coming.
An earlier study found that women can hear approaching noises sooner than their bigger,
smarter male partners.
Scientists had 50 volunteers listen to a tone that sounds like it's moving toward them. The
listeners pressed a button when it sounded like the tone arrived. After testing for many times, the
scientists then collected the results and assessed each subject's strength to the button and the
changing of their blood pressure.
The final results suggested that the 98-pound weak subjects pressed their buttons quicker and
stronger than the well-muscled ones, because they perceived the threatening sound as being closer
than it actually was.By comparison, the latter had a slow reaction to the tone, that is to say, they had
slower reaction to the coming threat.
The finding got a hearing on May 21st at the meeting of the Acoustical Society of America in
Portland,Oregon.
Such listening overreacting, the scientists say, could be a good survival ability,so the
conclusion is that a smaller and weaker person feel dangers more easily and quickly and has more
chances to survive than a big one.
28.According to the passage, which ability you have but never realized?
A.The ability to see a thing once and remember it forever.
B.The ability to hear something dangerous coming.
C.The ability of flying in the air.
D.The ability to completely disappear.
29.In the test, which one had press the button earlier and powerful?

Huawei has made a bold prediction, saying it plans to surpass Apple as the second-biggest
smart phone player in the world in three years and leapfrog Samsung by 2021,a top executive told
CNBC on Sunday.
Currently, the Chinese network infrastructure and electronics company, sits in third place. After
seeing solid growth in its smart phone shipments last year,Huawei appears to be confident it can
unseat its rivals(对手).
"We hope that in three years our market share can be top two and in five years our market
share can be top one,"Richard Yu,chief executive of Huawei's consumer business group, told
CNBC in a TV interview at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The company shipped 108 million smart phones in 2015,exceeding()its own expectations

Yu said that Huawei's level of growth is sustainable, and said the company is expecting a 30
percent year-over-year rise in smart phone shipments this year. That would bring the figure to over
140 million.
Much of Huawei's smart phone growth has been driven by Western Europe and China, but the
U.S.has eluded()the company until now.Huawei has had a mixed relationship with the U.S.
market and was effectively banned due to concerns about cybersecurity(网络安全).
Recently, the company has dipped its toes()back into the U.S.market,by manufacturing
Google's Nexus 6P device.Yu admits that the company was "quite late"to the U.S.but will
"dramatically"raise its market share there in the next few years.

than my heart beating wildly. Was it my imagination?
I was returning home after a late music lesson. My parents were attending a meeting so I had to
get home on my own.The distance from my music teacher's house to my home was just 500 meters.
The street was darker than I had expected but I was not very worried about the short walk home,I
was busy thinking about my upcoming music exam when I became aware that I was being followed.
I continued on my way keeping an eye out for any sounds. There it was again, the sound of
someone walking behind me.Fear came over me and I hurried on.My house was just around the
corner.I decided to run.To my surprise, the person following me began to run too.I looked behind
me and saw a dark figure catching up with me.Suddenly,I ran into a dustbin by the road and fell
over.
I felt a hand catch hold of my arm and I screamed loudly in fear. The hand let go of my arm
and I pushed myself off the ground quickly, getting ready to run again. It was at that moment that I
found myself looking at a young lady dressed in a dark sports suit.It looked like she had been
scared by my reaction.
