Fall is one of the most beautiful times of the year. There are plenty of places around the world when it comes to colourful autumn scenery. Here are 4 for you to explore.
The Cotswolds, England
People who come to England searching for classic countryside scenes usually head to the Cotswolds. The rolling hills, narrow roads and historic villages are attractive. The orange, red and gold leaves add to the scenery (风景) and not surprisingly, the Cotswolds is most famous for its long-distance hiking paths. You can visit the historic university town of Oxford.
Bavaria, Germany
Bavaria often has Oktoberfest (啤酒节) in fall. Smaller towns might have their own Oktoberfest, but you can also see some of Europe’s most beautiful fall colours in Bavaria’s non-urban (非城市的) regions. There are several paths that run through the region’s forests. A couple of these paths pass near Neuschwanstein Castle, a beautiful structure that is the perfect backdrop for the sea of orange and red leaves.
Pitlochry, Scotland
The Scottish Highlands can be the perfect place to see fall leaves. Parts of the place are famous for their treeless landscapes, but the land around Pitlochry is covered by forests. Apart from gazing at the leaves, there are plenty of other activities in Pitlochry. You can see lots of animals. The salmon make their run upriver in the fall as well.
Transylvania, Romania
Tourists who visit Transylvania in fall will see plenty of colourful trees. Like other cities in Eastern Europe, parts of Transylvania’s capital are very urban. The city can serve as a base for exploring the area, but you can also see some picturesque leaves without travelling to the countryside.
1. What is Cotswold best-known for?

2. Where can you see animals according to the text?

Does adventure have an age limit? Two close friends have given a negative answer to the question. Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip, both at the age of 81, inspired by Jules Verne’s novel Around the World in 80 Days, are on a mission to see all seven continents in just over two and a half months.
Their first stop was a location that was not easily accessible to even many experienced travelers: Antarctica. Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake Passage, the famously rough waters. “For almost two days, we were rocking and rolling and slipping and sliding through the Drake Passage. It was just wild,” Hamby said. “But when we stepped foot on the ground of the Antarctic, we forgot all of that. The beauty of the Antarctic is just unbelievable — just breath-taking.”
Over the past three months, the pair have ridden camels in Egypt, met elephants in Bali, and observed the Northern Lights in Finland. For Hamby, the best part of the trip was not the beauty along the way. “We love all the sights that we saw, but the things that we remember the most are the people that we met,” she said. “We met some of the kindest and friendliest people in the world. We just have friends now all over the world.”
When it came to how their families felt about their journey, Hamby said her daughter Louise was not too concerned. “She just says, ‘Well, if Mom falls out of a hot air balloon in Egypt or off of the mountain ... That’s fine. She’s living the life she wanted to live, and I’m happy for her,’” Hamby said.
Hazelip hopes their story can inspire people of all ages. “Don’t sit in that chair and waste away,” Hazelip said. “Ellie has this wonderful saying; it goes ‘the world is a book and he who does not travel only reads one page’. So get up out of that easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make some plans and live. Remember that age is only a number.”
4. Which words can best describe Hamby and Hazelip’s journey to Antarctica?
A. Adventurous but wonderful. B. Boring and uneventful.
C. Well-planned and smooth. D. Romantic but fruitless.
5. What was the most unforgettable part of the trip for Hamby?
A. Seeing beautiful scenes. B. Meeting wonderful people.
C. Experiencing different cultures. D. Having her best friend’s company.
6. What was Louise’s attitude to her mother’s journey?
A. Uncertain. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
7. What message does Hazelip most want to give us?
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. A friend for life is a friend indeed.
C. Seeing the world is not a must for the old.
D. It’s never too late to live life to the fullest.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. C 7. D

Being able to run 26. 2 miles means you’ re in good health, right? Not exactly. We’ve already found some of the benefits (好处) of long-distance running, but now we’ll see the darker side of the marathon.
Marathoners who die in training or on the race course usually make headlines because these tragedies seem so unusual — who could be in better health and less likely to die than a runner? At the age of 52, Jim Fixx, a celebrated runner, died in 1984. In this condition, the arteries (动脉) walls become thickened, causing less blood to flow through them. In 2007, 28-year-old Ryan Shay died while competing in the U. S. Olympic marathon trials. His death was caused by an irregular (不规则的) heartbeat.
It’s obvious that running affects the heart, but did you know running can increase the size of the heart? Hearts can become bigger when an athlete is doing physical training. The body supply the increased amount of blood needed by increasing the size of the organ. After that the hearts can lead to irregular heartbeat, which can lead to heart failure.
Some marathoners think their fitness level absolves them from health problems. This simply isn’t the case. Medical examinations can find the risk factors that kill and injure runners. There are ways to reduce your risk factors. Don’t think you can eat or drink whatever you want because running will burn off the calories — diets rich in fat can lead to heart problems.
In addition to these life-threatening aspects of the sport, there are other sports injuries to be aware of. Most of these are overuse or over-training injuries that can be prevented by resting properly. While you should approach the sport with caution (谨慎) , you should also have fun running.
8. Why were the examples of Jim Fixx and Ryan Sha y given?
A. To show the possible danger of the marathon. B. To take pity on their death.
C. To tell the importance of regular exercise. D. To call on people not to exercise by themselves.
9. How does the heart manage to provide the increased need of blood?
A. By beating faster. B. By enlarging itself.
C. By beating more heavily. D. By working with other body parts.
10. What does the underlined word “absolves” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A. Shapes. B. Separates. C. Frees. D. Advises.
11. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Having a rest after injuries. B. Paying more attention to other injuries.
C. Stopping running completely. D. Being careful and having fun running.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要讲述了马拉松这项运动的负面影响,包括可能导致的健康问题和其他运动损伤。
【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Marathoners who die in training or on the race course usually make headlines because these tragedies seem so unusual — who could be in better health and less likely to die than a runner? In 2007, 28-year-old Ryan Shay died while competing in the U. S. Olympic marathon trials. His death was caused by an irregular 故选A。
【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Hearts can become bigger when an athlete is doing physical training. The body supply the increased amount of blood needed by increasing the size of the organ.(当运动员进行体育训练时,心脏会变得更大。身体通过增大器官的大小来供应所需的更多的血液)”可知,心脏通过扩大自身来满足不断增加的血液需求。故选B。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“them from health problems(……他们……健康问题)”以及“This simply isn’t the case. Medical examinations can find the risk factors that kill and injure runners.(事实并非如此。医学检查可以发现导致跑步者死亡和受伤的危险因素)”可知,划线词所在句提出了相反的事实,说明一些马拉松运动员认为他们的健康水平使他们免受健康问题的困扰。故划线词意思是“使……免于”。故选C。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“In addition to these life-threatening aspects of the sport, there are other sports injuries to be aware of. Most of these are overuse or over-training injuries that can be prevented by resting properly. While you should approach the sport with caution (谨慎) , you should also have fun running.(除了这些运动中危及生命的方面,还有其他需要注意的运动损伤。这些大多是过度使用或过度训练造成的损伤,可以通过适当的休息来预防。虽然你应该谨慎地进行这项运动,但你也应该享受跑步的乐趣)”可知,作者在最后一段暗示了小心并享受跑步的乐趣。故选D。

Earth, our home, is the third planet from the sun. While scientists continue to hunt for life beyond Earth, our home planet remains the only place for human beings to live. On it, everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of lived out their lives. That’s home. That’s us.
Our Earth is a book written by Jane Calame. It’s also a helpful guide to caring for our planet. Our planet is unique for many reasons, but its fresh water and oxygen (氧气) are two key things. Water covers about 71% of Earth’s surface, with most of that water lying in our planet’s oceans. About a fifth of the air is oxygen, produced by plants. But water and air pollution is becoming more and more serious. The state of the natural world is alarming, making it a must for us to be knowledgeable about. But the future of Earth doesn’t have to be a negative one. This amazing children’s book has some cheerful pictures as it explains the planet we live on.
By providing ideas for ways in which we can all look after Earth in a workable and child-friendly manner (方式), Our Earth is the perfect book for educating environmentalists or any member of the next generation. The delightful (令人愉快的) pictures and easy-to-understand language make the underlying message in this book simple, and children aged eight or above will enjoy reading it.
Whether you choose to walk and ride your bike to school, or you’re sorting out your rubbish, or live a greener life with a good habit of little things, Our Earth teaches the reader that we can all play a part in shaping the future of the planet, no matter how small the action or how young the person is.
12. What is the purpose of the first paragraph?
A. To present a new discovery. B. To show we are a family on Earth.
C. To introduce the topic of the text. D. To explain the secret of Earth.
13. What makes Our Earth a perfect book to educate children?
A. Its clear ideas. B. Its writing style.
C. Its colourful pictures. D. Its useful knowledge.
14. What may the author agree with?
A. Every small act counts. B. Strike while the iron is hot.
C. He who laughs last laughs best. D. A friend in need is a friend indeed.
15. Where is the text most probably taken from?
A. A review of a play. B. A story on the Earth.

Dear Ben,
It’s cool that you want to pick up a new hobby. I totally get why choosing one is hard!
I chose learning to ride a bike on weekends as my hobby. When I cycle in the park, I can enjoy beautiful scenery, which helps me relax after a week of study. Plus, it’s a good way to keep me healthy.
For you, I think you should make a choice based on your time and interest. If you enjoy quiet time, drawing is great; if you are active and like playing with others, basketball fits. If you love music, playing the guitar could be perfect! No rush to decide. Just have fun trying!

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I never thought my father’s job could change my life so much. One evening he came home and told us his company was sending him to another city. At first, I didn’t worry, thinking it might be a short trip or just a small change. But then he added that because he and Mom would both be very busy, I would have to go to a boarding (寄宿) school. The word “boarding” made me unhappy. It meant leaving my neighborhood, my old school, and most of all, my best friend June.
June and I grew up together. We rode bikes in the summer, shared secrets at night, and laughed until our stomachs hurt. When I told her about the move, she tried to smile. “It’s okay,” she said quickly. “We’ll call every weekend. We’ll always be best friends,” she added. I wanted to believe her, so I agreed, holding on to her promise. Still, deep inside, a small voice raised doubts: Would things really stay the same once I left?
The new school was nothing like home. The buildings were big, and the students all were friendly, but I still missed home and June. At Saturday night, I sat on my dormitory (学生宿舍) bed waiting for June’s call. At first, we talked a lot, but soon our calls grew shorter. Sometimes she didn’t answer right away. When she did, she often talked about a new student named Emily. “Emily is so cool,” June said once, laughing through the phone. I forced myself to laugh too, but inside I felt hurt.
I told myself I didn’t care, but the truth was that I cared too much. I imagined Emily taking my place, walking beside June, and telling her jokes that used to be mine. I grew jealous (妒忌的). Soon I stopped answering her calls. I left her texts unread. At night, I cried quietly into my pillow, telling myself June didn’t need me anymore.
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One Saturday morning, I heard my name called outside the dormitory.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next afternoon, I saw June off at the train station.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】例文
One Saturday morning, I heard my name called outside the dormitory. To my surprise, it was June, her eyes tired from the long journey. She told me she had been worried when I stopped answering her calls. After begging her parents for permission, she decided to visit me. Sitting together on the bench, she explained gently, “You and Emily are both my friends, but you are unique.” I heard those words, and my sadness melted away. The fear that had been pressing on me for weeks lifted, replaced by the warmth of knowing I still mattered to her.
The next afternoon, I saw June off at the train station. We stood there, not wanting to let go, our eyes filled with both sadness and hope. The train whistle blew, pulling us apart, but inside I felt steady. I knew distance would never break what we shared. There would be phone calls, messages, and visits, each one keeping our ties alive. Walking back alone, I realized true friendship is not measured by how often we are together, but by the certainty that we remain close, even miles apart.

“Don’t sit in that chair and waste away” Hazelip said. “Ellie has this wonderful saying; it goes ‘the world is a book and he who does not travel only reads one page’. So get up out of that easy chair, step out of your comfort zone, make some plans and live. Remember that age is only a number.”
4. Which words can best describe Hamby and Hazelip’s journey to Antarctica?
A. Adventurous but wonderful. B. Boring and uneventful.
C. Well-planned and smooth. D. Romantic but fruitless.
5. What was the most unforgettable part of the trip for Hamby?
A. Seeing beautiful scenes. B. Meeting wonderful people.
C. Experiencing different cultures. D. Having her best friend’s company.
6. What was Louise’s attitude to her mother’s journey?
A. Uncertain. B. Indifferent. C. Supportive. D. Concerned.
7. What message does Hazelip most want to give us?
A. It’s never too old to learn.
B. A friend for life is a friend indeed.
C. Seeing the world is not a must for the old.
D. It’s never too late to live life to the fullest.
C
A. Shapes. B. Separates. C. Frees. D. Advises.
11 What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A. Having a rest after injuries. B. Paying more attention to other injuries.
C. Stopping running completely. D. Being careful and having fun running.
D
第二节(满分25分)
注意:
(1) 续写词数应为150个左右;
(2) 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
One Saturday morning, I heard my name called outside the dormitory.
