My life experience is anything but ordinary. Raised by my hardworking single mother on Australia’s Gold Coast, I was encouraged to pursue higher education. Though I ranked top academically, my passion was cooking, a path my mother hesitated to support due to its challenges. To please her, I attended university while working part-time as a chef. However, my love for the kitchen soon surpassed my studies, and I dropped out to pursue cooking full-time.
Over the next 12 years, I climbed the ranks as a chef, landing head chef positions in North Queensland. Life seemed perfect—I was engaged, had great friends and enjoyed stability. Yet, a lingering restlessness grew within me. A trip to Bali became a turning point. I realized I desired something beyond conventional (守旧) existence. Despite guilt, I walked away from my settled life, returning to my mother’s home on the Gold Coast.
Soon, I fell back into old patterns—working in kitchens and feeling unfulfilled. Then, Instagram changed everything. As an early user, I poured my creativity into the platform, discovering a talent for photography and storytelling. By 2012, my audience grew to 200,000 followers, and tourism boards began reaching out. Recognizing the opportunity, I quit my job to pursue travel photography and social media full-time.
The early days were tough. I created a “solo influencer package”, offering brands social media content, photography and campaign reports. As a pioneer in Australia’s influencer market, my services became highly popular. I traveled on and on—50 trips a year at my peak—while expanding into consulting, public speaking, and project management.
Now, I run a multifaceted (多层面) business, including photography, social media, and travel. I co-founded the Travel Bootcamp, teaching others to build careers in the industry, and launched an online photography course for beginners. Next year, I’ll lead my first photography tour in Zimbabwe, my wife’s homeland, combining my passions with conservation and community support.
My journey has been challenging yet deeply fulfilling. Money is no longer the main driver—instead, I seek meaningful experiences and opportunities to inspire others. What began as a small idea has grown into a life of adventure, creativity and purpose.
4. What does the underlined word “surpassed” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Went beyond. B. Broke up. C. Controlled. D. Improved.
5. Why did the author quit his job in North Queensland?
A. He wanted to make a trip to Bali. B. He didn’t enjoy working in the kitchen.
C. He was eager to experience more in life. D. He preferred to live a conventional life.
6. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?
A. Why Instagram changed the author’s mindset.
B. Why followers liked to read the author’s posts.
C. How Internet benefited millions of online users.
D. How the author started a career as a solo influencer.
7. What message does the text convey?
A. Big results require big ambitions. B. The future is built on great ideas.
C. Bravery never goes out of fashion. D. Your heart is the birthplace of dreams.
Everyone has “down days”. Maybe it’s because of the bad weather, or the poor grade on a difficult test, and some days teenagers just act uninterested in life or school. But these symptoms (症状) often pass quickly, as teens move on to new school subjects, or meet friends, preventing themselves from thinking what troubles them at the moment. But if a teenager displays symptoms of sadness for more than two weeks, it might point to something serious.
As teenagers develop, they push new boundaries (边界), complain about rules and look for more free rights from their parents. According to the online Health Guide on Adolescent Development, parents must be lasting figures in their teenagers’ life, providing safe boundaries for teens to grow, even if the teenagers act like these boundaries are unwanted.
Parents need to provide rules, while also remaining flexible (灵活的) and respectful of the growing teens’ need for freedom. For example, teenagers will often feel frustrated, embarrassed, and even angry that though they want freedom, they still need to ask their parents for agreement to go to a friend’s house, or need their mothers to take them to school.
The US Department of Education says that parents should respect (尊重) and support their teens’ choices as long as those choices won’t have long-term harmful effects. For example, even if a parent doesn’t prefer the music his or her teen listens to, it’s unlikely that the choice of music will prevent that teen from entering a good college, or lead to health problems. However, if that teen is drinking alcohol and driving, parents must get through strict punishments to teach him/her that there are bad results of poor choices that come with increased freedom.
8. Why do teens’ feelings of bad days usually disappear quickly?
A. Their teachers help them. B. They take some medicine.
C. Their parents talk with them. D. They shift their attention.
9. What does the example in Paragraph 3 show?
A. Freedom must be given at any time. B. Teens are mad about being controlled.
C. Teens need both freedom and proper rules. D. Rules must be absolutely strict for teens.
10. What should parents do about their teens’ choices?
A. Support their helpful hobbies. B. Tell them which college to attend.
C. Cancel their extra-curricular activities. D. Get them away from singing pop songs.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. How to Be with Growing Teens. B. Causes of Teens’ Sadness.
C. Teens’ Worries About Strict Rules. D. The Importance of Making Friends with Teens.
Picture you’re sitting in your living room, windows open. What do you hear? The sound of a flowing river? The soft voice of human chatter in a cafe? A soundscape is your aural(声音的)environment — everything you can hear around you, and researchers say the soundscape can influence your well-being.
In times gone by, soundscapes would’ve consisted of the sounds of nature, such as bird call and the sound of waves. The reality of human life in the 21st Century means that air travel, construction and traffic noises are now in the mix, and agricultural noise means that not even rural life is safe. Noise pollution can lead to heightened stress levels, damaged mental function and higher risk of heart disease in humans, according to an article published by the UK Parliament called “The effects of artificial light and noise on human health”. Not only that, it can also affect the behavior and life cycles of species which rely on sound.
So, what can be done? Urban design is one trick. In Barcelona in Spain, urban planners designed “superblocks”, where traffic goes around big groups of buildings and the inner streets are for pedestrians(行人), creating space for people and wildlife that is free from sounds of cars and motorbikes. In a 2025 article published in BMC Public Health, people in these areas reported an improvement in well-being, quality of sleep and reduction in noise.
Other techniques include tree buffers(缓冲), where trees are planted in urban areas to absorb sound energy. In the Netherlands, they have created earth banks next to Schiphol airport to absorb noise from the runways and protect residents in the surrounding areas. And it turns out that they make excellent sound barriers, particularly if the trees are large, thick and evergreen.
When we think about improving our environment, it’s likely that your mind jumps to reducing litter and air pollution. But reducing noise pollution is also important, to create a soundscape that works for everyone — people and wildlife.
12. What did soundscapes mainly consist of in the past?
A. Traffic and construction noises. B. Agricultural noises in rural areas.
C. Natural sounds like birdcall and waves. D. Sounds from cafes and human chatter.
13. What is the purpose of Barcelona’s “superblocks”?
A. To protect historical buildings.
B. To increase green spaces in cities.
C. To promote the use of public transport.
D. To separate pedestrians from traffic noise.
14. Why are evergreen trees used as sound barriers?
A. They provide habitats for urban wildlife.
B. They can take in large amounts of sound.
C. They are more attractive than other plants.
D. They grow quickly and are easy to maintain.
15. What can we infer about noise pollution from the last paragraph?
A. It greatly disturbs people’s mind peace.
B. It is the key to environmental improvement.
C. It is often ignored in environmental protection.
D. It affects the environment more than air pollution.

As he lay awake that night, Tony could hear his parents discussing his sister Alice’s birthday. It was just two days away. Birthdays were always a lot of fun, even though there was no money for store-bought gifts. Nearly all of toys he and his sister had were homemade. There was nothing wrong with that, he knew. Like many families in this part, they were poor.
This birthday would be different, though. Alice was older now, and he’d seen how her eyes lit up when she saw the new doll at Honey House, a neighborhood store just down the road from their house.
How he longed for her to have it! An idea finally came to him just before he went to bed. After a quick breakfast the following morning, he tied a bag to the handlebars of his bike and headed toward a village hill.
After a long journey, he reached his destination, the mango forest. There were already two other boys there. Tony grabbed his bag and set to work immediately.
The sun was high overhead. The weather was hot and nearly all of the taller trees held ripe mangoes but they were well beyond reach. Tony struggled to climb the trees to pick mangoes, though he fell off many times.
His efforts were sometimes rewarded when a mango dropped into the bag. After a while his neck ached from looking upward, and his arms grew sore. He kept at it, though, and by late afternoon his bag was nearly full.
