Dear Oscar,
I'm so thrilled to receive your email, informing me that you're organizing the upcoming China-Australia Cultural
Exchange Week! For this event,I would like to recommend paper-cutting,a traditional folk art deeply rooted in Chinese
daily life.
To make a paper-cut,you will mainly need red paper and scissors. The process is simple yet fascinating. You should
fold a piece of red paper first, and then use scissors to cut out patterns like flowers or Chinese characters, which often
carry people's good wishes. In our culture, the color red represents good luck and happiness, making it a popular choice
for traditional crafts.
I hope this activity will help Australian students better understand Chinese culture.Wish the exchange week a great
success!
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua

explained our bike trip to Gardiner Dam.Moved by our story and seeing our tired faces and dusty bikes,he smiled and
offered us a small room for free.He even fed us a hot supper.Words couldn't express our gratitude to him, just showing
our sincere respect. Before falling asleep,we made our promised call home, assuring our parents we were safe.Refreshed
and grateful,we continued our journey the next morning, determined to finish the last part of our journey to the dam.
Our two-day adventure was completed, for only 50 cents! The 50-cent tire repair cost was the only expense of our
whole journey. We had experienced the joy of speeding down the hill, the hardship of climbing the valley, and the

Text 3
M:Hi,Kelly. How's your new house search going?
W:I've been looking at so many houses, but they're all expensive!

next day.
M:OK.I'd like to book a ticket for this one instead.
Text 5
W:What can I do for you,Sir?
M:Well, how long is it from here to the train station?I'd like to have a wake-up call service tomorrow morning.

Text 6
W:Hello,Richard.I didn't expect to see you here. What kind of book are you looking for?
M:Hey,Anita.I'm looking for a book on software development. It has always been my goal to create computer programs.
W:That's interesting.Actually,I have a friend who works in computer programming.Maybe he could recommend some
useful books to you.Would you like me to give him a call?
M:Yes.But I don't mind asking him myself.I might have other questions to ask as well.Do you think he would mind if
you gave me his e-mail address?
W:I'm not sure, but it's probably better if I ask him first and then tell you his reply later.

M:Annie, how are all our preparations going for the music concert to celebrate our city's 500th birthday?Today is
Monday,December 8th.We only have a few days left.

expecting thousands of people to show up,despite the cold weather.
M:Great! But I'm a little concerned about the weather. The report says it will snow in five days. That's right on the day of
the event.

W:Hmm...I guess we should have another plan in case the weather is too bad.Why don't you call the City Hall and see if
they have a theater to use for the event, just in case we need to move it indoors?
M:Okay.It's worth a try.

M:Germany has many customs.Could you introduce some of being a guest there?

M:Oh,so being late is not allowed at all? What if something comes up and I can't make it on time?
W:If you're going to be over 15 minutes late, you'd better call the host first. And there's one more thing-you should

M:I like that.I wish we do the same here more often. To me,it shows good manners.
Text 9
M:Hi,Maria!What are you reading?
W:Hi,Jack.Just some information from a skydiving school. It looks really fun.Do you want to try skydiving?
M:Sure!Do we have to buy lots of equipment and stuff?
W:Not really. The school provides the basic equipment but we'd have to take a few things along, such as thick boots and
clothes suitable for mountain activities. We also need to bring sunscreen and something to protect our head from
the sun.
M:OK.And where would we stay?
W:Well, the school seems to operate a campsite too.It says here that it's only $10 a day to set up a tent. That would be
fine. And this way we'd save quite a bit because even a cheap hotel would cost much money.
M:Exactly. How about going skydiving next weekend?
W:Sorry,I'm going on a geography field trip then.
M:OK.Let's make it after the final exam, which comes in three weeks.
W:Fine.Although we really like cycling,we'd better drive there. It's a little far from here.
M:Alright.
Text 10
Hello, everybody.Today,we'll talk about languages and how they are disappearing fast.Currently, over 6,000
languages are spoken in the world. However, experts predict that as many as half may have disappeared by the end of this
century.About one language dies every two weeks. There are 516 languages nearly extinct now.The majority of these come
from the Pacific and the Americas, which together make up 74%of the total. They are followed by Asia at 15%of
languages under threat,Africa around 9%and Europe just at 2%.
But why is this happening now?One factor is that globalization has made the world smaller and technology has made
it easier for separated people to communicate in common languages, like English, making minority languages be replaced.
On a social level, some speakers consider the minority languages old-fashioned and even feel slightly embarrassed to speak
their ancestors'languages.Instead, they prefer an international language that represents their improved economic status.
We can't stop the changes but we can try to keep languages alive through language maintenance programmes and by
documenting languages before they disappear,so they can be studied in the future.
