When floods destroyed Bangkok more than a decade ago, Thai landscape architect Voraakhom became determined to help her sinking hometown fight this deadly climate threat. “For us, climate change is primarily a water crisis,” she said.
The architect integrates nature and water into her designs to create landscapes that help ease flooding and add greenery to heavily populated cities. To date, Thailand has tried to tackle its flooding problem by building higher and higher dams. She said, arguing that this is the wrong approach and a solution based on fear, “the central question sinking cities like Bangkok need to focus on is how we are going to live with the water, without fear.”
One of Voraakhom’s most innovative designs is Centenary Park, which stores large amounts of rainwater and prevents the surrounding streets from flooding. Voraakhom also created Asia’s largest rooftop farm, Siam Green Sky, which recycles food waste from restaurants in the building below and uses it as plant fertilizer. The farm also slows down and stores large amounts of rainwater. Inspired by Thailand’s traditional agricultural practices, the architect created a landscape which allows rainwater to pour into the herb gardens.
A research fellow at the Stockholm Environment Institute, Diane Archer said, “For Voraakhom’s urban green spaces, not only are they designed to tackle flooding by acting as water storage spaces, but they contribute to cleaning the air and providing essential green oases(绿洲) in our concrete(混凝土的) jungle, so important for mental and physical health. Even at a small scale, these parks are beneficial to the residents, and we could do with more.”
Voraakhom’s designs and the lessons are now expanding beyond Thailand. “Green, climate-adapted areas are a good long-term investment for cities,” she said, “and the best solution for the next generation.”
24. How does Voraakhom help cities with a large population to address flooding?
A. By countering the fear of residents.
B. By building higher and higher dams.
C. By painting landscapes for the cities.
D. By using nature and water in her design.
25. What is food waste in Siam Green Sky used to do?
A. To store rainwater.
B. To create a landscape.
C. To fertilize herb gardens.
D. To be recycled by restaurants.
26. What does Archer think of Voraakhom’s designs?
A. They benefit the health of citizens.
B. They discover green oases in cities.
C. They become the biggest air cleaner.
D. They increase concrete storage in cities.
27. Which of the following words best describe Voraakhom?
A. Creative and influential. B. Ambitious and warm-hearted.

It’s a cliché (陈词滥调) that everyone’s too busy these days. But one specific complaint is made especially mournfully: There’s never any time to read.
What makes the problem thorny is that the usual time-management techniques don’t seem sufficient. The web’s full of articles offering tips on making time to read: “Give up TV” or “Carry a book with you at all times.” But in my experience, using such methods to free up the odd 30 minutes doesn’t work. Sit down to read and work-related thoughts keep spinning (旋转) — or else you’re so exhausted that a challenging book’s the last thing you need. The modern mind, Tim Parks, a novelist and critic, writes, “is showing more tendency toward communication... It is not simply that one is interrupted; it is that one is actually ready for interruption.” Deep reading requires not just time, but a special kind of time which can’t be obtained merely by becoming more efficient.
In fact, “becoming more efficient” is part of the problem. Thinking of time as a resource to be maximised means you approach it for your specific purpose, judging any given moment should be well spent which advances toward some goal. Deep reading, by contrast, depends on being willing to risk inefficiency, aimlessness, even time-wasting. Try to arrange it in as a to-do list item and you’ll manage only goal-focused reading — useful, sometimes, but not the most fulfilling kind. “The future comes at us like empty bottles along an unstoppable and nearly endless conveyor belt (传送带),” writes Gary Eberle in his book Sacred Time, and “we feel a pressure to fill these different-sized bottles (days, hours, minutes) as they pass, for if they get by without being filled, we will have wasted them.” No mindset could be worse for losing yourself in a book.
So what does work? Perhaps surprisingly, scheduling regular times for reading. You’d think this might fuel the efficiency mindset, but in fact, Eberle notes, such habitual behaviour helps us “step outside time’s flow” into “soul time.” You could limit distractions by reading only physical books, or on single-purpose e-readers. “Carry a book with you at all times” can actually work, too – providing you dip in often enough, so that reading becomes the common state from which you can temporarily get away to take care of business, before getting dipped again. On a really good day, it no longer feels as if you’re “making time to read,” but just reading, and making time for everything else.
28. Which can best replace the underlined word “thorny” in Paragraph 2?
A. Tough B. Pleasant C. Slight D. Essential
29. Why do the usual time-management techniques fail to work?
A. The modern mind is not shaped.
B. Deep reading is not fully guaranteed.
C. Repetition is required in deep reading.
D. People always forget to carry a book with them.
30. Why does the author mention “fill the empty bottles” in Paragraph 3?
A. To tell readers how to make a perfect daily schedule.
B. To prove that people know how to stop wasting time
C. To explain why deep reading is easy to do in daily life.
D. To show people’s usual idea of using time as much as possible.
31. Which statement may Eberle agree with?
A. Distractions can be avoided by developing online reading habits.
B. People should devote themselves to reading for fear of wasting time.
C. Scheduling regular times for reading is helpful in achieving deep reading.
D. Deep reading can only be achieved after dealing with all the daily businesses.

The Forsa Ring is an iron ring from Halsingland, dating back to the 10th century. The inscription(铭文)on the ring describes fines for a specific crime, where payment was to be made in the form of oxen and silver. The ring is believed to have been used as a door handle and is currently the oldest known preserved legal text in Scandinavia. By changing the translation of the word “auk” from the previous interpretation “and” to the new interpretation “also” the meaning changes so that fines could be paid either with an ox or with two ore of silver. An ore was equal to about 25 grams of silver.
“This indicates a much more flexible system, where both oxen and silver could be used as units of payment. If a person had easier access to oxen than to silver, they could pay their fines with an ox. On the contrary, if someone had silver but no oxen, they could pay with two ore of silver,” says Rodney Edvinsson.
The new interpretation shows that the Vikings had a system where both oxen and silver served as units of payment. This system allowed for multiple types of units of accounts to be used at the same time, reducing transaction (交易) difficulty and making it easier for individuals to meet their financial responsibilities. It also agrees better with how the system functioned later according to later regional laws and is, according to Rodney Edvinsson, significant for our understanding of both Scandinavian and European history of money.
Edvinsson previously contributed to developing a historical consumer price index as far back as the 13th century, but this new interpretation provides insights into price levels even earlier in history. The study highlights the importance of using modern economic theories to interpret historical sources. By combining economic theory with archaeological (考古学的) and historical findings, new opportunities for cross-field research and a deeper understanding of early economic systems are opened up.
32. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs?
A. Vikings only accepted silver as payment for fines from crimes.
B. Vikings had no knowledge of legal systems before the 10th century.
C. The Forsa Ring inscription suggested punishments in oxen and silver.
D. The Forsa Ring was mainly used as a means of trading oxen and silver.
33. Which of the following is an advantage of the payment system?
A. People found it more convenient to pay their fines.
B. According to later regional laws, it functioned better.
C. It allowed for a unique kind of currency unit to be used.
D. It became easier for governments to settle their financial duties.
34. What is the significance of the new interpretation?
A. It is about 3 centuries older than Rodney Edvinsson’s previous study.
B. A new means of interpreting historical sources of inscription is available.
C. It shows that early Scandinavians had an advanced overall payment system.
D. Opportunities of cross-field research and understanding early economies emerge.
35. What is the best title of the passage?
A. Early Payment Systems in Scandinavia.
B. Interpretations of the Vikings' Legal System.
C. New Insights into the Forsa Ring's Inscription.
D. The Discovery of the Scandinavian Forsa Ring.

第二节 读后续写 (满分20分)
阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写最后一段,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Another wildly bright lightning along with a thunder cracked in the sky! Mary swiftly threw herself into her Mum’s arms, burying her face into her chest and trembling with fright. “I think we should leave here right away!” She murmured in a crying tone. Instantly, Dad refused her request again for the fact that the city had already been flooded severely. As he saw through their window, the almost three-meter-high floodwater had already surrounded the apartment building like a wide river, several cars floating on it just like boats.
“Black out!” Mary gasped(喘气)fearfully, the wind roaring and the rain beating on the roof and windows, which made her even more nervous in the whole darkness. Mum took Mary’s hand and carefully led her to sit on the sofa, trying her best to comfort her. While she performed calmly, Mary could tell she was nervous too. “Let’s try to find a light source first and then see what other supplies we have.” Dad made an arrangement. Luckily, there was a flashlight, some packages of instant noodles, bread and some drinking water, which may help them get through the toughness for the half of the night. Without saying a single word, Dad turned on the flashlight, sat down and hugged his wife and daughter. The sudden silence in the house seemed to make the wind and rain more frightening outside. Only the light of the flashlight could now give them some warmth and a sense of little hope.
“What about Mrs. Thomson? Old and weak, she must be extremely helpless.” Mum said with great concern when she thought about their nice neighbor who lived alone upstairs of the same building. After a brief discussion, Mum and Dad decided they should go and check whether Mrs. Thomson was fine. Mary, with heavy breath and pounding heart, stood up immediately, ready to bring all their supplies to Mrs. Thomson’s house.
In the darkness, they supported each other and went upstairs step by step with the light of the flashlight. The water had already flooded into the stairwell, making each step slippery and dangerous. Mary clung(抓住)tightly to her parents’ hands, her heart pounding with a mix of fear and determination. When they finally reached Mrs. Thomson’s door, Dad knocked gently but firmly. After what felt like an eternity(无止境的长时间), the door creaked open, revealing Mrs. Thomson’s frightened face. “Thank goodness you’re here!” she whispered, her voice trembling. They quickly helped her gather her essential belongings and led her back downstairs to their apartment, where they all sat together, finding comfort in each other's presence.
