I’m a seventeen-year-old boy preparing for my A Level exams at the end of the year. In the society where my peers (同龄人) and I live, we tend to accept the rat race values. As students, we want to get good grades so that we can get good jobs. I enjoy studying and have consistently received A’s in my classes. There was a year when I finished first in my class in the final exams. It was a great accomplishment.
Another one I am pleased with is that I managed to improve the relationship between Mum and Dad. Dad was a successful businessman who was rarely at home. Mum was a housewife who always felt bored and constantly nagged (唠叨) him to let her go to work. Their constant arguing bothered me, so I advised Dad that Mum would be better off with a part-time job. He agreed, and their relationship has improved since then.
My most proud achievement, however, is my successful work in the local old folks’ home. My grandparents had raised me since I was a child. I wept (哭泣) bitterly when they died. Unlike many of my classmates, I do not take part in my school's community service to earn points. I enjoy my voluntary work and believe I’m contributing to a worthwhile cause. This is where I can help. I talk to the elderly, assist them with their daily life, and listen to their problems, glory days and the hardships they experienced.
Last year, I hosted a successful New Year party for the elderly and they enjoyed a great time. Many expressed a desire to attend another party the following year. When I reflect on my accomplishments, I’m especially proud of my service at the old folks’ home, so I hope to study social work at university and work as a social worker in the future. I wish to be more skilled in attending to the less fortunate as well as find great satisfaction in it, after all.
4. What can be inferred about the author from the first paragraph?
A. His good grades got him a good job.
B. He refuses to compete with his peers fiercely.
C. His views on social values are well known.
D. He is content with his scholastic achievements.
5. Which role does the author play in his parents’ relationship?
A. A helper. B. A judge. C. A monitor. D. A supporter.
6. What is the greatest accomplishment for the author?
A. The contribution to volunteering. B. The success in exams.
C. The recovery of confidence in life. D. The work in community service.
7. Why does the author want to major in social work at university?
A. To gain a well-paid job.
B. To give his life a purpose.
C. To meet his grandparents’ expectations.
D. To better help the disadvantaged.

You may not know a lot of people when you start high school. Even if you know some freshmen, you still feel nervous that you don’t know any upperclassmen or teachers. How are you going to make friends among this sea of unknown faces?
Most high schools hold freshman orientation before school actually starts, which is helpful not only because you can know your way around the building, but also because you get to meet some of your teachers and fellow freshmen. That way, when you show upon your first day of school, you may already recognize a few familiar faces. When you talk to your new classmates, you’ll probably find that a lot of them are feeling just like you are. They’re all new to the school and don’t know what to expect.Talking about a common worry with them can help you develop friendships.
The work in high school is something that freshmen are possibly worried about. The work in high school builds on what you learnt in middle school, giving you a more advanced knowledge of many subjects. So you may find you have more work to do or that it’s a bit more challenging. If you ever find your work too difficult, teachers can give you extra help.
High school also has more extra-curricular activities than middle school does such as clubs, music and theatre groups and sports teams. This is a good time to explore your interests and try new things.
High school gives you the chance to learn how to manage your time, to develop your social skills and interests, and more importantly to be more independent and responsible.
8. How do the freshmen usually feel when they start high school?
A. Proud. B. Anxious. C. Excited. D. Curious.
9. What does the underlined word “orientation” mean in Paragraph2?
A. A game. B. Discussion. C. Training. D. An examination.
10. What are freshmen probably worried about according to Paragraph3?
A. The learning tasks. B. The ability to make friends.
C. The friendship with teachers. D. The freshman orientation.
11. Extra-curricular activities mainly help students________.
A. build up their strength B. develop their interests
C. develop friendships D. improve their learning ability
D
Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.
Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音高).
One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music ''actually tunes our sensory system''. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.
Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.
For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.
As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word ''mi'' in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.
The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.
12. When learning Chinese a foreigner will find _____.
A. it difficult to learn music at the same time
B. it not difficult to learn music at the same time
C. it hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D. it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
13 Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A. Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music.
B. Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain.
C. Because music training might help people with language study.
D. Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
14. The underlined word ''intoned'' in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word ''_____''.
A. created B. spelled
C. seemed D. pronounced
15. What would be the best title of this passage?
A. Mandarin Speakers Are Smarter than English Speakers
B. Skilled Ear for Music May Help Language Study
C. Pitch Plays a Central Role in Chinese Learning
D. Schools Need to Develop Music Programs

12. When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _____.
A. it difficult to learn music at the same time
B. it not difficult to learn music at the same time
C. it hard to master the tones required to speak and understand
D. it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
13. Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?

由上文“Some kids love handwriting, but others hate when it’s time to put their pen to paper. Maybe they are worried about their handwriting. Are you one of them? (有些孩子喜欢手写,但另一些孩子讨厌该把笔写在纸上的时候。也许他们担心自己的笔迹。你是他们中的一员吗?)”可知,有些孩子因为担心自己的书写而讨厌写字;下文“Here are five steps that really work!(以下是五个真正有效的步骤!)”说明了有一些行之有效的步骤;F选项The good news is that just about everyone can improve their handwriting.(好消息是,几乎每个人都能提高自己的书写水平)提出了书写水平是能够提高的,对于不喜欢书写的孩子而言是好消息,承接了上文,而且也引出了下文改善书写的步骤,符合题意。故选F项。
由本段的小标题“Get a great grasp(好好把握)”可知,本段主要论述的是掌握好抓握;上文“Try this — hold your pencil at the top and try to write your name. Pretty hard? But when you hold your pencil the correct way, writing is much easier.(试试这个——把你的铅笔放在顶端,试着写下你的名字。很难吗?但是,当你正确地拿着铅笔时,写作就容易多了)”说明了抓握方法不当会导致书写困难,但是正确的抓握会使得书写变简单;后文“Hold it in place with your thumb, and your index (食指) and middle fingers.(用拇指、食指和中指将其固定到位)”说明了抓握的正确姿势;G选项The best way to hold a pen or pencil is to let it rest next to the base of your thumb.(拿铅笔最好的方法是把它放在大拇指的根部)承接上文说明了正确的抓握是什么样的,同时引起下文对于抓握的进一步论述,符合题意。故选G项。
由上文“Lined paper is your friend! Those lines can help you create letters that are the right size and proportion (均衡).(线条纸是你的朋友!这些线条可以帮助你创建正确大小和比例的字母) ”论述了线条对于保证书写的大小和比例是有帮助的;下文“Also be sure to fill up the lined space completely. Those capital letters should be from the bottom line to the top one.(此外,一定要将排列好的空间完全填满。这些大写字母应该从最下面的一行到最上面的一行)”说明了在具体书写时候的要求;C选项So “a” should be half the height of a capital “A”.(所以a应该是大写a的一半高)中的so承接上文,具体说明了书写的大小和比例要求,同时与下文的also形成并列关系,符合题意。故选C项。
由下文“ That makes it harder to make the smooth lines. (这使得制作平滑的线条变得更加困难)”说明了有一种方式会很难画出流畅线条;E选项Some kids press down really hard when they write.(有些孩子写字时压得很重)就是会导致难以画出流畅线条的方式,后文的that就是指E选项的press down really hard,且E选项中的really hard与后文too hard对应,所以E选项符合题意。
So even though it’s not schoolwork, you’re still using the skills you need to control your pencil better.(很多游戏都需要你写字或画画。所以,即使这不是作业,你仍然在使用你需要的技能来更好地控制你的铅笔)”说明了在游戏中通过写和画可以练习控制铅笔的技能,A选项Play games(玩游戏)为祈使句且概括了下文的内容,符合题意。故选A项。
