Kellan was coaching one of the beginning soccer teams-the Falcons. It was their first practice.
“Angela, you’re supposed to be guarding the net!” Kellan called out.
“But I’m making a flower chain for you,” the girl replied.
A few moments later, Angela ran off the field to present Kellan with her gift. Angela’s teammate Jason, meanwhile, was following the slow-movement of a caterpillar (毛毛虫)in the middle of the field, while another player, Rory, was playing in a near-by pond of rainwater.
After the practice, Kellan felt really tired, as if she had run a marathon. When she arrived home, Kellan threw herself on the couch and thought carefully about the practice. The players ran in a hundred different directions. They didn’t recognize each other’s strengths and had no idea how to work together. As she touched the flower chain still hanging around her neck, an idea slowly started taking shape in her mind.
The next day, Kellan called for her players to gather around and took out a picture. The picture showed the loops of a big chain, and each loop had a team member’s name as well as a talent written on it.
“This picture shows one way each person can help our team,” Kellan began explaining. “For example, Rory has fast speed, and Jason has sharp eyes for watching the ball.” Kellan noticed how everyone in the group slowly changed, sitting up taller and smiling as she mentioned their names and skills.
“What will happen if one loop is missing?” asked Kellan.
“The chain will fall apart, and it won’t be a chain anymore,” Angela replied.
“Exactly!” Kellan said. “In order to be a team, we need everyone to work together, like loops in a chain. It won’t be easy, but I want every person to try.”
Her players still struggled with their practice, but, for the first time, they tried to help each other. It was a start. Kellan felt a sense of satisfaction as she waved good-bye to her team at the end of the practice.

Do Boys and Girls Have Different Reading Habits?
The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is a worldwide study of 15-year-old students’ performance in math, science, and reading. A closer look at the reading tests shows the interesting fact—girls are outperforming boys in reading and this is connected with girls’ greater enjoyment of reading.
One key area which has a main effect on reading performance is reading for enjoyment rather than simply for study or schoolwork purposes. Interestingly, the PISA study found that in all countries except South Korea assessed (评估) girls read for enjoyment more than boys. The study found that in all the countries assessed, just over half of boys, but almost three-quarters of girls said that they read for enjoyment.
In countries such as Estonia, Lithuania and the Netherlands, the difference between boys and girls was most significant (显著的). What’s more, in places such as Austria, very low levels of boys expressed interest in reading.
However, in places like Japan, boys and girls read for enjoyment at almost the same level. And there were a few countries and places that scored very highly in boys reading enjoyment, for example, in Albania, Indonesia, Shanghai in China and Thailand where at least 80% of boys enjoy reading. Although these positive numbers are matched and passed by girls who reported an even higher level of reading enjoyment (90%).
An interesting area which the PISA study looked at was the types of literature (文学作品) that both girls and boys generally enjoy. Boys were found to enjoy reading magazines, newspapers, and comic books more than girls. Girls were found to be twice as likely to enjoy works of fiction (小说) as boys. This was clearly repeated across all countries.
While reading in all forms is certainly beneficial and should be supported, the low number of boys reading for enjoyment and their limited choices are problems that need to be solved. Countries need to think about ways to inspire interest for boys in reading and make sure that a wide variety of different types of books are available for them.
The PISA study has shown a clear result in genders (性别) when it comes to reading. Low levels of interest in or enjoyment of reading can have long term effects on future success in life. For this reason, it is important that governments, teachers and parents all work to help raise reading levels.
35. According to the passage, PISA study found ________.
A. boys enjoyed reading works of fiction twice as much as girls
B. girls in most countries read for enjoyment more than boys
C. boys liked to read for study or schoolwork purposes
D. girls were better in math and science tests than boys
36. What do you know from the passage?
A. Most boys in Shanghai in China enjoy reading.
B. Boys in Thailand enjoy reading more than girls.
C. More boys read for enjoyment than girls in Japan.
D. Few girls enjoy reading magazines and newspapers.
37. The writer probably agrees that ________.
A. students should be suggested reading their favorite books
B. students’ future success in life depends on their reading ways
C. actions should be taken to encourage boys’ interest in reading
D. reading for schoolwork has a main effect on reading performance

In parts of Africa, people communicate with a wild bird—the greater honeyguide—in order to locate bee nests and harvest their stores of honey. It’s a rare example of cooperation (合作) between humans and wild animals. Brian Wood and Claire Spottiswoode were lead authors on a study about how this valuable partnership is maintained and how it changes in different cultures.
“Our study proves the bird’s ability to learn specific voiced signals that are traditionally used by different honey-hunting communities. This helps people and birds work together in ways that are beneficial for both,” Wood said. “Honeyguides seem to know the landscape well. They know the location of bee nests and then share with people,” Spottiswoode said. “People are eager for the bird’s help.” The honeyguides also benefit from locating the nests: They eat the leftover honey.
Spottiswoode and Wood’s study was done with the Hadza community in Tanzania and the Yao community of northern Mozambique. Before this study, they had already found that the two groups use different ways to attract honeyguides. When a Hadza person wants to work with a honeyguide, they make a whistle (口哨) sound in Mozambique, Yao people do this by making a “Brr!...” sound first, then a “…Hmm!” sound.
Using mathematical models and audio (音频) playback experiments, the team studied these signals. In the experiment, researchers played the same set of recorded sounds to honeyguides in Tanzania and Mozambique. Through this experiment, the researchers wanted to know whether the honeyguides could recognize and prefer the special sounds used by local honey-hunters, or the birds were just naturally attracted to all such sounds.
The honeyguides in Tanzania were over three times more likely to cooperate when hearing the calls of local Hadza people than the calls of “foreign” Yao. The honeyguides in Mozambique were almost twice as likely to cooperate when hearing the local Yao call, compared to the “foreign” Hadza whistles.
The study shows that differences in honeyguide-attracting signals are not random (随机的) but have a practical reason. While honey-hunting, both the Hadza and Yao come across mammals (哺乳动物), but only the Hadza hunt them, using bows and arrows. The Hadza’s hunting might explain the less noticeable whistles they use. Hadza hunters explain that they can avoid being found by their prey (猎物) because their whistles “sound like birds.” However, the signal the Yao use to communicate with the honeyguide can help scare off animals they find dangerous.
38. By cooperating with honey-hunting communities, honeyguides can ________.
A. recognize hunters’ whistle B. locate bee nests easier
C. have more food D. become familiar with the landscape
39. Why did the researchers use the same recorded sounds?
A. To study their mathematical models.
B. To check if they are a natural preference.
C. To see if they increase birds’ ability to find honey.
D. To teach honey-hunting communities how to give signals.
40. What can we learn from Spottiswoode and Wood’s study?
A. The honeyguides prefer calls from the local people.
B. The human-bird relationship can change with new signals.
C. The Yao community hunts animals while looking for bee nests.
D. The signals from the Hadza were more attractive to honeyguides.
41. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. How mammals react to different signals.
B. How signals connect with hunting activity.
C. How hunting skills are used to scare off animals.
D. How whistles help honeyguides to find bee nests.

第四部分 书面表达(共20分)
八、阅读表达(共10分,第1-3题每小题2分,第4题4分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Strength training, a type of exercise, is used to build strength, power, and endurance (耐力). Many adults do strength training, but is it safe and useful for children? People used to think that strength training was not useful and even dangerous for children, possibly causing injuries that could affect their growth. However, the latest study shows that strength training does improve children’s overall health.
When children do strength training, they get stronger as their muscles (肌肉) grow! The strength training can most likely make them better, faster and stronger. “It is so beneficial for their bodies, like their bones, joints and metabolic (新陈代谢的) health,” says Becca Rigg, a professional trainer at a fitness center. She knows all about the positive effects of strength training. She takes her kids to strength workouts two to three times per week.
“I also love the message teenagers receive when exercising this way: They may feel more confident when they finish such hard and tiring training. It is also rewarding for them to see results. They are, indeed, getting stronger while having a better image,” explains Rigg, “Sometimes they make strength training part of their life and it’s easier for them to get involved in the training later.”
How do kids get started? Just like other activities, it is very important to learn the correct way to do it. For strength training, it is a must to learn from an experienced coach because the coach can make sure children do movements safely and correctly. In the early stage, it is best for teens to simply use their body weight, such as doing push-ups and squats. Bodyweight movements can then be made more difficult by adding equipment or weights, for example, a barbell or dumbbells.
So, let’s cheer our kids on as they lift, pull, and push their way to a stronger future. With our support and care, they’ll grow up ready to take on whatever life throws at them.

32. What was Angela doing when Kellan first coached the Falcons?
A. She was guarding the net. B. She was playing with water.
C. She was making a flower chain. D. She was watching a caterpillar.
33. Why did the players slowly change as Kellan mentioned their names and skills?
A. Because everyone realized their own importance.
B. Because they wanted to share their thoughts.
C. Because they knew they would have big fun.
D. Because everyone did well in the practice.
34. By showing the picture of a chain, Kellan wanted the kids to understand ________.
A the value of winning B. the purpose of practice
C. the importance of trying D. the power of teamwork

A students should be suggested reading their favorite books
B. students’ future success in life depends on their reading ways
C. actions should be taken to encourage boys’ interest in reading
D. reading for schoolwork has a main effect on reading performance
D
B To check if they are a natural preference.
