Media literacy isn’t just a nice-to-have skill anymore - it’s essential. At its core, media literacy means understanding how media works - who created a message, why it was made, and how it’s meant to influence the audience. Students are constantly surrounded by messages: some are helpful, others misleading. Teaching them to analyze, question, and evaluate media gives them the tools to think critically and make informed choices. The good news? You can build media literacy into what you’re already doing, one step at a time. Use Headlines as Warm-Ups
Start class with a real-world headline - ideally one related to your subject area.
Ask students:
● Is this information reliable?
● Where did it come from?
● What might be missing?
This five-minute routine builds awareness and can lead to great discussions.Compare Two Sources
Pick two texts on the same topic but from different perspectives. This could be editorials, news articles, or video content. Ask students to compare:
● Language and tone.
● Choice of images.
● What facts are emphasized or ignored?
This is a great way to teach bias (偏见) and point of view, especially in ELA or social studies.Build Visual Literacy
Use political cartoons, advertisements, or photos to practise interpreting:
● What’s the message?
● How is it being communicated visually?
● Who benefits from this image?
This kind of analysis helps students read beyond the text.
This is about teaching students to be curious, and you just need to model curiosity. When you say, “Let’s figure out where this came from,” you’re demonstrating to students how to think critically. And when they see you do it regularly, they start doing it too.
21.What is the primary purpose of teaching media literacy to students?
A.To arouse their interest in media.
B.To enhance their literature skills.
C.To develop their critical thinking ability.
D.To broaden their general media knowledge.
22.Which technique of teaching media literacy is recommended?
A.Using visual aids in teaching.
B.Asking students to connect two sources.
C.Providing materials that include pictures.
D.Having students figure out better headlines.
23.How can teachers best stimulate students’ curiosity?
A.Ask routine questions. B.Show, don’t just tell.
C.Reward curious students. D.Tell, don’t just watch.

Amina’s lungs burned as she reached the summit of the hill, her feet pounding against the unfamiliar pavement of her new hometown. As she ran, memories flashed through her mind.
Six months earlier, Amina had fled her war-torn homeland. When she finally reached this small town in a country whose language she barely spoke, she felt more out of place than ever. That first week, she had hardly left her tiny apartment. But on the eighth day, driven by a restlessness she couldn’t shake, Amina laced up her worn running shoes and stepped outside.
At first, she ran to escape — from the memories, from the pitying looks of her new neighbors. But with each day and each mile, something began to shift. The rhythmic pounding of her feet became a way to process the hurt she’d endured and the challenges that lay ahead. Weeks later, Amina had explored every street of her new town. She started recognizing faces on her runs: the elderly man waving from his porch, the smiling mother pushing a stroller. One day, to her surprise, she found herself waving back.
Now, as Amina pushed up the last hill of her route, she realized how far she’d come. Running had become her lifeline, a way to bridge the gap between her past and her present. When she approached the entrance of her apartment building, she noticed her English teacher, Mrs. Thompson, standing with several other runners from the community. They held a banner reading, “Walnut Grove Running Club.”
Mrs. Thompson stepped forward, smiling warmly. “Amina, we’ve seen you running every day. We wondered if you’d like to join our club.”
Amina felt a lump form in her throat. She nodded, a smile spreading across her face. “Yes,” she said, her accent still thick but her voice strong. As the group cheered and welcomed her, Amina realized she had been running through more than just physical borders. With each step, she had been crossing the boundaries of fear, isolation, and hurt.
24.What can be learned about Amina?
A.She was a distance runner at home.
B.She spoke the local language fluently.
C.She left her motherland because of war.
D.She missed her motherland very much.
25.What initially motivated Amina to start running?
A.To explore her new hometown. B.To escape pain and loneliness.
C.To prepare for a running club. D.To reach the summit of the hill.
26.What does “waving back” in paragraph 3 suggest about Amina?
A.She had learned the local customs.
B.She had mastered the local language.
C.She wanted to impress Mrs. Thompson.
D.She began developing social connections.
27.Which can be the best title for the text?
A.Running Through Borders B.Running Toward a Peaceful Life
C.Overcoming Pain Through Sports D.Breaking Barriers in a New Country
C

Doctor Dolittle, the well-known, fictional naturalist who famously possesses the ability to converse with animals and understand their languages has now inspired a high-paying science prize aimed at cracking the challenge of interspecies communication. A grand prize of $500,000, awaits whichever research team can make real progress: not just decoding the language of another species but using it to draw a reply from an animal. Last week, an initial $100,000 went to a US team studying dolphin whistles — after decades of recording bottlenose dolphins in Florida, they identified around 20 distinct messaging whistles.
The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses. If we were able to decode animal chatter, should this knowledge change how we treat them, whether as pets, labour or food? The prize presents a moral challenge and it forces us to reconsider our relationships with other species.
Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”
While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen.
28.Why is Turing test mentioned in the passage?
A.To stress its role and value in AI progress. B.To show its difference from the Challenge.
C.To warn of concerns the Challenge may face. D.To show its use in interspecies communication.
29.Which research would Birch approve of to win the prize?
A.People communicating with their pets. B.People directing sheepdogs during work.
C.Researchers recording how cattle communicate. D.Researchers interacting with birds using whistles.
30.What does the “move the dial” mean in the last paragraph?
A.Make a change. B.Win the prize.
C.Slow the process. D.Continue the research.
31.What’s the author’s attitude toward the practical effect of the research?
A.Optimistic. B.Doubtful. C.Objective. D.Dismissive.

When we think about high school’s lasting impact, we often focus on grade point averages, extracurricular activities, and close friendships. But according to a new study, the influence of high school stretches far beyond the teenage years and into our very bodies.
The study tracked a nationally representative sample of individuals who were high school sophomores (二年级的) and seniors in 1980. Researchers followed these participants into their early 50s and found strong links between high school experience and midlife body mass index (BMI). This relationship held even when accounting for college education, academic attainment, and weight during high school itself.
This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.
So, what parts of high school matter? It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women. These factors weren’t just minor contributors; they maintained their influence even after researchers controlled for a host of variables like college degrees and adult income.
Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals.
The gender differences in this study are striking. For women, both family and school SES, along with popularity, were significantly linked to adult weight. For men, the connection existed but was less pronounced. One possible reason? The cultural landscape. Girls and women often deal with more pressure to be thin and face harsher judgment about their weight than boys and men. These pressures likely strengthen how high school experiences — both academic and social — shape long-term behaviors and self-perceptions.
32.What does the study mainly reveal about high schools?
A.They predict academic success. B.They foster social relationships.
C.They determine career achievements. D.They shape long- term physical health.
33.Which factor relates to lower adult BMI for women?
A.Adult income status. B.High school popularity.
C.College degree level. D.High school sports activities.
34.Why do gender differences exist in findings?
A.Social expectations. B.Economic policies.
C.Educational resources. D.Biological distinctions.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Gender Differences in Educational Environments
B.The Link Between School Grades and Adult Success
C.High School’s Long- Term Impact on Physical Health
D.The Role of Social Activities in adolescent Development

Nearly 100 bookworms (书迷) walked through the U.S. national Arboretum on Aug. 24, among the sounds of dogs barking, feet marching and police sirens (警笛声) ringing out from a distance. Many walkers didn’t care about those sounds. 36 This was the monthly meeting for Book It Around D.C., a new club that combines audiobooks and walking.
Since starting in march, Book It Around D.C. has grown, bringing together audiobook listeners who said they felt happier or safer in a group. They also said it not only was a pleasure in reading but also brought them a sense of belonging — even if they didn’t talk to each other. “ 37 ” said Bailey, who listened to “The Book Club for Troublesome Women” by Marie Bostwick.
38 This is especially true because a recent study showed that fewer Americans than before read for pleasure. In addition to audiobook clubs, silent book clubs, where people gather to read silently, have grown in popularity across the country. Many readers have found communities on social media, where some of Book It Around D.C.’s members discovered the group through Instagram.
On the morning of Aug. 24, Kit Ballenger, a librarian who lives in Montgomery County, set up a foldable table in a parking lot in the southern part of the National Arboretum. 39 They each wrote their first name and current audiobook on a white sticker they stuck to the front of their shirts.
The group began walking a few minutes later — some quickly, others slowly — while many walkers opened audiobook apps on their phones. Some walkers used the roughly 90-minute outing to make friends, chatting about their jobs, their favorite books and their go-to grocery stores. 40 After a quiet walk, the lawn filled with chatter (闲聊).
A.Books are just like our close friends.
B.They were trying to focus on exercise itself.
C.Bookworms say they are seeking like-minded people.
D.People of all ages carried head phones as they approached the table.
E.This feels like something that is beautifully both inward and outward.
F.The walkers passed trees, paths and gardens, many stopping to take pictures.
G.Instead, they were listening to narrators read audiobooks on their headphones.

In the opening of the World Conference of Classics in Beijing, Martin Kern, a famous sinologist, advocated for 56 transformative role of cross-cultural study in understanding ancient civilizations.
Kern argued that studying ancient China or Greece 57 (separate) limits the ability of scholars in classical studies to understand 58 makes each culture distinct, as well as the universal characteristics shared across civilizations.
“If you only know about China, 59 only know about Greece, you will never know what is particular and special about either one and what 60 (share) with other ancient civilizations,” Kern said, 61 (emphasize) the importance of engaging in comparative scholarship.
Kern shared how comparative study had reshaped his own work, as investigating Greek 62 (debate) on reading practices brought new insights to his research on early Chinese manuscripts (手稿). For him, cross-cultural dialogues are not simply supplemental (补充的) to 63 (specialize) research; they are essential for transforming scholars’ understanding of their own fields. “To know something about other cultures is to better understand 64 (one) own,” he commented.
Kern said that without engaging with other civilizations, “we rob ourselves of fundamental insights into our own fields and civilization.” The incredibly rich traditions of ancient China, he added, can contribute a wealth of new perspectives 65 the study of other civilizations and global antiquity as a system.

Mr. Whiteside was more than a regular teacher; he belonged to those rare educators who truly loved teaching. His joy spread through his smile as he stood by the geometry blackboard, showing his passion for plane geometry I was a quiet, shy student who rarely spoke up — never causing trouble or drawing attention. Yet in his class, plane geometry unexpectedly became my favorite subject. Through his lively teaching, the clear logic of geometric principles quietly awakened interest in my usually silent heart.
Toward the end of the year, Mr. Whiteside wanted to check our knowledge of geometry and gave us 25 true/ false questions — a nationally standardized test: The test presented each problem with a conclusion shown. If we could prove the result using rules we learnt in math class, the answer was true. If it couldn’t be proved, it was false.
I quickly finished 24 problems. However, number 17 seemed to be a great challenge. I knew deep down that I had the ability to prove its truth, but the exact approach was not immediately obvious. Finally, I spent 30 minutes working on that proof until it was completed. Satisfied, I marked the question true and handed in the completed test.
The following day, when the results came back, my score was an impressive 96, signaling a solid grasp of the subject. However, to my surprise and disappointment, number 17 was marked as incorrect. It was a blow to my confidence, but I couldn’t ignore the efforts I had put into that problem. I clearly remembered that I had racked my brain to cover my page with related lines, figures and formulas until the proof was there at last.
When Mr. Whiteside asked if there were any questions, for the first time, gathering all my courage, I raised my hand and spoke up, “The correct answer to number 17 is true!”
Instead of arguing that this was a nationally standardized test, Mr. Whiteside did the most powerful thing I have ever seen a teacher do.

While her classmates were playing with dolls, young Ayanna Howard preferred robots and watching The Bionic Woman! The TV series centers on a former tennis star who becomes a powerful part-robot person after a life-saving operation. Inspired by this, Howard dreamed of a career to create artificial legs for the disabled. However, her plans to study medicine fell apart upon realizing how much she hated biology! Luckily, she found a new interest in robotics. After receiving an engineering degree from Brown University in 1993, she attended the University of Southern California, achieving both a master’s and a Ph.D. in electrical engineering. In 2005, she became an associate professor at Georgia Tech and founded a research group focusing on human-robot interaction. In 2008, her SnoMote robots were internationally recognized for their ability to independently study climate change in remote areas.
【答案】21.C 22.A 23.B
根据文章第一段“Teaching them to analyze, question, and evaluate media gives them the tools to think critically and make informed choices.(教他们分析、质疑和评估媒体,为他们提供了批判性思考和做出明智选择的工具)”可知,教学生媒介素养的主要目的是培养他们的批判性思维能力。 故选C。
故选A。
根据文章最后一段“This is about teaching students to be curious, and you just need to model curiosity. When you say, “Let’s figure out where this came from,” you’re demonstrating to students how to think critically.(这是关于教学生保持好奇心,而你只需要示范好奇心。当你说“让我们弄清楚这来自哪里”时,你正在向学生展示如何进行批判性思考。)”可知,教师通过示范而非单纯说教来激发学生的好奇心,即“展示,而不只是说教”。 故选B。
B

【答案】24.C 25.B 26.D 27.A
根据文章第三段“At first, she ran to escape—from the memories, from the pitying looks of her new neighbors.(起初,她奔跑是为了逃避——逃避记忆,逃避新邻居怜悯的目光。)”
根据第三段“But with each day and each mile, something began to shift. The rhythmic pounding of her feet became a way to process the hurt she’d endured and the challenges that lay ahead. Weeks later, Amina had explored every street of her new town. She started recognizing faces on her runs: the elderly man waving from his porch, the smiling mother pushing a stroller. One day, to her surprise, she found herself waving back.(但随着日复一日的奔跑,某些东西开始改变。
故选A。

【答案】28.C 29.D 30.A 31.B
根据第二段中的“The Coller Dolittle Challenge financed by Jeremy Coller, a vegan and animal lover, is unashamedly modelled on the Turing test (图灵测试). That 20th-century test promotes efforts to design a machine capable of imitating human conversation, and became a touchstone in the evolution of AI. It also became a focus for concerns about machines tricking, even taking over, humans. The ability to commune with other species is likely to raise similar, unsettling questions as research progresses.
根据第三段“Philosopher Jonathan Birch, also a judge of the Jeremy Coller Centre, stressed that the Challenge is looking beyond the interspecies communication we have with pets, or that a farmer has with a sheepdog. Those relationships involve signalling and behavioural responses, Birch explains, “but that’s not telling us how animals communicate with each other... this prize is about understanding it so well that we can start to join the conversation.”(哲学家乔纳森·伯奇同时也是杰里米·科勒中心的评委,他强调,该挑战关注的跨物种交流,远不止我们与宠物之间、或是农民与牧羊犬之间的那种交流。伯奇解释道:“那些关系涉及信号传递和行为反应,但这并不能让我们了解动物之间是如何交流的……这个奖项的目的,是要充分理解动物间的交流方式,从而让我们能够参与到这种交流之中。”)”可知,伯奇认可的获奖研究应是能让人类参与到动物交流中的研究,“研究人员用口哨与鸟类互动”符合“参与交流”的特点。故选D项。
30.词句猜测题。根据最后一段中的“While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures.(虽然科勒希望他的慈善项目能改变我们对动物的态度,但事实是,即使是突破性的研究,在很大程度上也未能move the dial动物的福利状况。最近关于头足类动物智力的研究,也未能阻止养殖这类动物的计划)”可知,“头足类动物智力研究未能阻止其养殖计划”是对“未能move the dial on their welfare”的举例说明,由此可推测“move the dial”意为“产生改变、带来影响”。故选A项。
根据最后一段中的“While Coller hopes his charity will reshape our attitude to animals, the truth is that even groundbreaking research has largely failed to move the dial on their welfare. Recent work on cephalopod’s (头足类动物) intelligence has not stopped plans to farm the creatures. We might one day be able to understand what animals are saying — but there is no guarantee we will listen.
【答案】32.D 33.B 34.A 35.C
根据第三段“This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial. (这项研究认为,高中不仅仅是学习机构,它们还是健康的塑造者。几十年来,我们已经知道教育程度与健康结果有关,包括体重。但这项研究将时间线退回,表明接受教育的过程,尤其是发生在高中的早期阶段,同样至关重要)”可知,这项研究主要揭示了高中对长期身体健康的影响。故选D项。
33.细节理解题。根据第四段中“It turns out that attending private schools, being in high socioeconomic status (High-SES) environments, and enrolling in advanced curricular tracks were associated with lower midlife BMI, especially for women.(结果是就读私立学校、处于高社会经济地位环境以及参加进阶课程,与中年时期较低的体重指数(尤其在女性中)存在关联)”和第五段“Interestingly, popularity during high school also played a role for women. In a society where women and girls face heightened pressure around body image, early social acceptance may help establish healthier long-term habits and body ideals. (有趣的是,高中时期的受欢迎程度对女性也会产生影响。在一个女性和女孩面临更严苛身材压力的社会里,早期的社会认同或许有助于建立更健康的长期习惯与身体审美观念)”可知,对女性来说,高中时期的受欢迎程度也与成年后较低的BMI有关。故选B项。
34.推理判断题。根据最后一段“The gender differences in this study are striking. 故选A项。
通读全文,尤其是第三段“This research argues that high schools are more than institutions of learning — they are health shapers. For decades, we’ve known that educational attainment is linked to health outcomes, including weight. But this study pushes the timeline back, suggesting that the process of becoming educated — especially the early stages that happen in high school — is just as crucial.

56.the 57.separately 58.what 59.or 60.is shared 61.emphasizing 62.debates 63.specialized 64.one’s 65.to
故填the。
故填what。
根据语境,“only know about China”和“only know about Greece”为并列选择关系,需用连词or连接,表“或者”。故填or。
故填is shared。
contribute sth. to sth. 故填to。

The Power of School Clubs
When I entered senior high school, I signed up for the Drama Club. As its member, I once performed in A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Night after night, we rehearsed under dim lights, bringing Shakespeare’s words to life.
This journey was more than acting. It improved my English and deepened my love for literature. What touched me most was our response to crisis — when the lead actor fell ill, we stayed calm, adjusted roles, and stood together. The final show wasn’t perfect, but it was ours.
To me, school clubs are not just after-school fun — they are where we grow. They teach teamwork, courage, and help us discover who we are. Every student should find a club that speaks to their heart — because in that space, we often meet a better version of ourselves.

注意:
Para. 1 Nodding smilingly, he held out his chalk to me in front of the class.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para.2 From that day in his geometry class, something changed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Nodding smilingly, he held out his chalk to me in front of the class. Hesitantly, I walked to the blackboard to show my proof to the class. My hands trembled slightly as I sketched the geometric figures with chalk, but Mr. Whiteside’s reassuring smile gave me the confidence to continue. My voice grew steadier as I connected related lines, cited formulas, and explained each step logically. The classroom fell silent except for the rhythmic tapping of chalk. When I finished, Mr. Whiteside studied the board intently, his eyes tracing every line. Suddenly, he clapped — a sharp, triumphant sound — and declared, “Flawless!” The class erupted in applause.
From that day in his geometry class, something changed. I started participating more in class discussions and became more willing to share my ideas with others. Mr. Whiteside’s trust in my reasoning had ignited a quiet confidence that transcended geometry, transforming my shyness into thoughtful participation. Looking back, I realized true education isn’t about standardized answers, but about nurturing courage to think, question, and prove the truth. Mr. Whiteside didn’t just teach geometry; he taught me how to make silence speak and doubts shine. His impact on my life has been immeasurable, and I will forever be grateful for the lesson he taught me that day.
