Passage 1
Takanori Kobayashi, a 23-year-old from Japan, has had a strong connection with Peking Opera since his childhood. His fascination with Chinese history began in his early childhood, influenced by Japanese manga (漫画), especially works like Romance of the Three Kingdoms. These stories made him curious about Chinese culture and led him to search for related videos online.
At 14, Kobayashi came across a video of a historical Peking Opera, The Battle of Red Cliffs. Although he didn’t understand the language, he was captivated by the costumes, makeup, and music. At 17, he found a website for the Shincyo Theater, a Peking Opera troupe (巡演) in Tokyo founded by Zhang Chunxiang, a Beijing-born artist, who had moved to Japan in the 1980s and founded the Shincyo Theater to promote Peking Opera in Japan.
Kobayashi emailed the theater, sharing with Zhang his passion for Peking Opera, and his desire to join the troupe. Zhang was impressed by his passion. At 18, Kobayashi moved to Tokyo to attend Chuo University, majoring in Chinese language and culture, while attending Zhang’ s Peking Opera classes every Saturday.
Zhang teaches his students by explaining the movements of Peking Opera in simple Japanese. Kobayashi, who enjoys playing civil roles, listens to famous performances to learn the music and get a sense of the roles. He works with Zhang to improve his performance. Years of hard work paid off. In 2020, Kobayashi finally got the chance and debuted in a small painted-face role in Wild Boar Forest, one of Shincyo Theater’s productions, which got well-received.
After graduation, Kobayashi worked for a company in cosmetics, but he still studies Peking Opera in his free time and occasionally performs with Shincyo Theater. “Becoming a professional Peking Opera performer in Japan is difficult and might not be practical as a long-term career. In China, performers usually start training at four or five, whereas I began close to 20. Even so, I’d still like to pursue it professionally and give it my best shot,” said Kobayashi.

Passage 1
McGriff was in her second year of university when she read Half the Sky, which examines the unfair treatment of women in developing countries. She was shocked to learn that 129 million girls worldwide do not have access to school.
“In much of the world, women and girls are responsible for household duties,” said McGriff, “It’s seen that girls won’t ever be putting their education to use.” Additionally, many poor families can’t afford girls’ tuition fees, school supplies and uniforms (校服). Yet, studies have shown that providing free uniforms can reduce dropout rates by 16% and absenteeism by more than 35%. This simple solution took root in McGriff’s mind and started her journey helping girls transform their lives.
As she took an entrepreneurship (创业) class, she was tasked with creating a business or nonprofit for a class project, which reminded her of the idea of the school uniform. Soon she developed an idea. After conducting field research, McGriff returned home, presented her education project at entrepreneurship competitions and won $35,000 in startup funds. Eventually she established her nonprofit, Style Her Empowered (SHE), to bring her vision to life.
That first year, the group hired local tailors and provided uniforms and school fees for 65 girls. But they soon ran into a problem — the students were outgrowing quickly. To address this, McGriff’s team, together with local tailors and students, designed an innovative “growing uniform” which could be adjusted to fit a girl for up to three years, accommodating six different sizes.
Today, SHE serves girls in 20 rural villages in southern Togo, providing 1,500 girls a year with free uniforms, school fees, supplies, tutoring, and much more. Once enrolled, students receive weekly tutoring. As a result, SHE’s students consistently pass their exams at higher rates than the national average. “Our students have increased their performance in school dramatically,” McGriff said. “If given the opportunity, they shine.”
1.What contributes to girls’ high dropout rates according to paragraph 2?
A.Financial difficulty. B.Family conflict.
C.Academic performance. D.School arrangement.
2.When did McGriff start her nonprofit organization?
A.After she analyzed the data of studies. B.When she learned about girls’ dropout rates.
C.When she won entrepreneurship competitions. D.After she read a book on girls’ unfair treatment.
3.How did SHE settle the issue of uniforms for girls?
A.By hiring famous local tailors. B.By creating adjustable uniforms.
C.By providing uniforms of various sizes. D.By increasing the school uniform budget.
4.Why does the writer mention the school performance of SHE’s students?
A.To highlight their hard work. B.To suggest the popularity of SHE.
C.To indicate their further development. D.To show the effectiveness of SHE’s practice.
Passage 2
According to the United Nations, 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions come directly from the way that we currently produce our electricity.71 percent of the earth is covered in water yet only around 1.5 percent of the global energy is produced through wave power. That’s what inspired Eco Wave Power CEO, Inna Braverman to take on the challenge.
Two weeks after she was born in Ukraine in 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear disaster occurred and she got hurt, suffering from breathing arrest and a clinical death. But thanks to her mother, who was a nurse, she was saved. Growing up, she felt it her purpose to find green and sustainable energy.
Inna found that previous wave energy developers have decided to pursue offshore technologies, contributing to huge installation and maintenance costs, incredibly vulnerable stations in storms, and consequently lack of funding. Her innovative version, however, is to install the power station on land. The only part of the system in the water is the floaters which bob up and down with the waves. These push compressed air into a tank where the energy is stored to produce electricity. The floaters are attached to existing man-made structures such as banks, piers, and breakwaters.
The simplicity of the design makes it cheaper to install and maintain as well as being better protected from rough weather and therefore, insurable. Once a commercial plant producing 20 megawatt s or more (enough for 20,000 homes) is in place, the unit cost significantly reduces. “Our price of energy decreases to about $0.05 US (€0.05) per kilowatt hour, which is comparable to the prices of onshore wind,” Inna explains.
A pilot station was installed in Gibraltar in 2016. It was the first wave energy system to be connected to the grid in Europe. More tests of the wave energy system have been arranged in different countries and regions.
1.What do we know from the first two paragraphs?

That’s why it’s so heart-warming to see a story like this in which a barista (咖啡师) does something small to make life a little easier for someone who is deaf.
Ibby Piracha lost his hearing when he was only two years old, and he now goes to his local cafe in Leesburg, Virginia to order a cup of coffee at least three times a week. Though all the baristas who work there have his order memorized, Ibby always writes his order on his phone and shows it to the barista.
One day, however, one of the baristas did something that changed everything! After Ibby ordered his coffee, he was amazed when barista Krystal Pane handed him a note in response. “I’ve been learning sign language just so you can have the same experience as everyone else,” the note read. Krystal then asked Ibby in sign language what he would like to order.
Ibby was touched that she would learn sign language just to help him feel welcome. “I was just so moved that she actually wanted to learn sign language. It is really a totally different language and it was something that she wanted to do because of me. Because I was a deaf customer. I was very, very impressed,” Ibby said.
Krystal had spent hours watching teaching videos so that she could learn enough sign language to give Ibby the best customer service that she could! “My job is to make sure people have the experience they expect and that’s what I gave him,” Krystal says.

While enjoying the holiday with her family during the summer of 1955, Chava Willig Levy, who was only three and a half years old, suddenly developed a high fever. After rushing her to the hospital, her family received the tragic news that all families of that generation feared— their precious Chava had polio
Chava spent the next few months in hospital. Although she could breathe on her own after treatment, she was left paralyzed from the neck down. When she was nine, she was thrilled that she got the chance to go to school. However, it turned out that she was in a single room with a group of kids who all had mobility impairment. Some of those kids were also intellectually disabled. They weren’t even allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria.

Passage 1
Working at a commercial bank in New York City in the mid-2010s, Anna Sacks sensed a lack of meaning in her life. She wanted to do something more fulfilling.
Some people seeking meaning might read a self-help book, or perhaps volunteer a few hours a week. Sacks packed up her life and moved to Connecticut for three months to participate in Adamah, a farming program that focuses on sustainable living and growing sustainable food. Returning to New York, Sacks carried with her a newfound purpose and a set of skills to turn her dreams into reality.
“One of the things that really stuck with me from Adamah was how little waste they produced and how they handled the waste they did have, mostly through composting,” she says. “And I just thought, ‘Why aren’t we doing that here? What is actually in all those bags and recycling bins at the roadsides?’”
The Adamah program opened Sacks’s eyes to the damage consumer culture is doing and the need to find solutions. So in 2016, she started working with a food rescue program, and in 2017, she found her true calling—what she calls “trash walking”.
During walks around her neighborhood, Sacks, 31, picked through trash to look for reusable items. Soon her trash walks expanded to include recycling bins in big companies. Surprisingly, she discovered really great stuff—like clothing and food—all of which she documents on Instagram and TikTok.
Under the name The Trash Walker, Sacks quickly gained popularity for her educational, funny, and surprising videos that highlight the problems with consumerism and share information about how to live a more sustainable lifestyle. “The root issue is overproduction, which leads to over-consumption, which leads to a large amount of waste,” she says.

Passage 2
Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcoming. You’re comfortable and feel like you belong. As in most cities, it’s a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business. After taking a few sips of that Caramel Macchiato, you immediately get that feeling of energy and optimism. Perhaps it’s partly due to the caffeine and sugar rush, or maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.
In December of 2017, Trenton’s first Starbucks café was opened to the public at 102 Warren Street. Walking in, people living in Trenton scream at everything about this café, from the diverse but local stuff to the Trenton themed décor (室内装饰) and art. To make things better, this Starbucks also serves as an “opportunity café” which essentially means the young people in our communities are recruited and offered job training and employment. This program not only uplifts our youth, but also increases the amount of minority business in the city.
In the interviews with customers, a trend in responses arose. To many, the Starbucks was a “favorite place to stop in after work” and provided “a very relaxing environment.” The staff were often highly praised, noted as being friendly, helpful, and working in harmony. The interior décor of the café struck a lot of people’s attention, given the familiarity of the atmosphere. Painted on the walls, all around the store, are murals (壁画) with bright, colorful, graffiti-like designs very sui generis in Trenton, showcasing local monuments like the State House and the famous “Trenton Makes” bridge.
This new Starbucks brings a sense of modernity to Downtown Trenton and reminds us that our city is always developing. Open from 6 a. m. until 7 p.m. every day, the building is hardly ever empty. This space is made for everyone in Trenton, even the non-coffee lovers.

Fang Li, a 70-year-old director and producer, hit the headline with The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru.
Late in September 1942, the Japanese military transported over 1,800 British prisoners of war from Hong Kong to Japan by ship. In the waters off Dongji Island, it was torpedoed (被鱼雷击中) by a US submarine. Fishermen from Zhoushan risked their lives to save 384 POWs. Fang was shocked. “How had we in China never heard of the Lisbon Maru? We know of the Titanic, but no one here ever mentioned the Lisbon Maru.” This mystery aroused Fang's curiosity, leading him to begin the search for the ship in 2016. During the journey, Fang learned of 94-year-old Lin Agen, the sole surviving fisherman to have participated in the rescue, and of a 98-year-old British soldier, Dennis Morley, who survived the ordeal. “It felt like a race against time. We had to document their stories before it was too late,” Fang says.
Fang launched a search for more survivors and their families. He placed ads in British newspapers like The Sunday Times and The Guardian. “People thought I was crazy — “Who even reads newspapers anymore? they said. But I knew that the elderly, like myself, still do,” Fang says. The campaign was a success, leading to BBC Radio 4 inviting him on a show, which in turn connected him with 380 POW families.
On Aug 23, The Sinking of the Lisbon Maru premiered on Dongji Island, where the tragedy occurred. In 2013, Deegan was trying to take control of her life after winning the fight against drinking. She did quit, but she was having difficulty reconnecting with people. Even looking someone in the eye proved to be difficult. “I was sort of like a shell of a person and just didn’t really have many life skills or self-confidence,” Deegan said.
However, baking was something that always brought her joy as a child. One day while helping out in the neighborhood, Deegan picked up a handheld mixer and started baking. “My life was just out of control, but baking is such a controlled thing, where if you take the right steps and follow the directions, you’ll get a pretty exact result,” she said.
Deegan started bringing her homemade baked cookies to people’s homes, which helped her reconnect with people. “Feeding people is such a universal love language,” she said. However, she was still trying to figure out how to find a career at 27 years old. She had no real work experience and she couldn’t put ‘quit drinking’ on her resume.

Passage 2
Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis (诊断) set him on the path to find a cure.
Born to a farmer’s family in 1978, Cai has been deeply influenced by his father’s idea that “one has to fight for himself”. Since primary school, he has been getting up before 5 am to run and study English. At 29, Cai became chief tax manager in Vanke Co. In 2011, he joined JD Group, where he led his team to develop the first electronic invoice (发票) in China. Wherever he worked, he always tried his best to create new value.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he would have only two to five years to live. ALS is usually caused by the gradual death of motor neurons(神经元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others’ help to survive. So far, only two medicines are available to treat ALS, but they can at most extend patients’ life for several months without improving their living quality.
To develop effective drugs is the only way to save ALS patients. However, the intense effort required, which is unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion. Take Alzheimer’s disease for example. Between 2000 and 2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research on more than 300 drugs failed.
Cai decided to take matters into his own hands. He started his own medical technology company, built his own research team, and volunteered to try more than 30 new medicines which all failed. However, he has decided that even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.
1.What kind of person is Cai Lei?
A.Extremely gifted and ambitious.
B.Hard-working and warm-hearted.
C.Quite responsible and dependable.

2.What might happen to people diagnosed with ALS?
A.Losing the ability to think and speak normally.
B.Maintaining a normal life by taking medicines.
C.Dying within months of a confirmed diagnosis.
D.Needing external assistance to survive in the end.
3.Why is Alzheimer’s disease mentioned in paragraph 4?
A.To talk about the severity of Alzheimer.
B.To prove Alzheimer to be a common disease.
C.To explain the difficulty of finding a cure for ALS.
D.To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.
4.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Joint efforts to fight ALS B.A man who never gives in
C.ASL, a rare deadly disease D.Suffering of a man with ALS

On a humid morning, Nev Schulman ran six miles in 43 minutes in East Hampton, maintaining an impressive sub-6:30 pace for three miles. Afterward, he shared a selfie on Strava, proudly noting he had made the top 1% of all-time runners on that route.
Later that day, while biking to pick up his son, Schulman crashed, flying over the handlebars and hitting a work truck. Paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, where X-rays revealed he had broken his neck but hadn’t suffered any broken fingers.
Schulman underwent emergency operation at another hospital. Remarkably, he had feeling in all his limbs and began healing faster than expected. “New doctors and nurses came in every six or 12 hours, and they couldn’t believe I was mobile,” he recalled. “They were delighted to see that I had narrowly escaped paralysis. It was amazing. I spent six days in the ICU, then went home wearing a brace for five weeks.” Just five days later, he shared his experience Instagram, reflecting on his close call with paralysis.

Passage 1
Growing up on a mountain farm in Tyrol, Fritz enjoyed watching how cows and horses interacted with each other more freely, once they’d been led out of the barn and into pasture. It was what he observed in his boyhood that took root in his pursuit of becoming a biologist. After he finished his studies at university, Fritz landed work at Austria’s Konrad Lorenz Research Center, raising raven chicks by hand and teaching graylag geese how to open boxes as he pursued his PhD.Working this closely with free-living animals was exactly what he’d dreamed of as a boy.
In 1997, a zoo gave the research center its first northern bald ibis chicks (隐鹮) Nowhere near as teachable as geese—and not even close to super intelligent ravens—the ibises frustrated most of the scientists. But Fritz was fascinated. He devoted himself to taking care of them. After the ibises were first released back into the wild more than 20 years ago, Fritz learned that spending generations in zoos hadn’t reduced their drive to migrate (迁徙), though it did leave them geographically uninformed. In their search for “south”, some ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thought, was a guide.
Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan—because he had done it before. “Around that time, the movie ‘Fly Away Home’ was a huge hit with us biologists,” Fritz says. When he announced that he’d do the same with the ibises, he was initially laughed at. But Fritz didn’t give up. He modified an ultralight aircraft so it would travel at speeds slow enough for his winged students to keep up. He had been his young pupils’ only provider of food, love and hugs since they were just a few days old, and the ibises eagerly followed their teacher, who just happened to pilot a fairly noisy machine.
In 2004, three years after some initially bumpy (颠簸的) experiments, Fritz led the first batch of birds from Austria to Italy, and has since led 15 such migrations. Over that time, he has rewilded 277 young ibises, many of which then started to pass the route on to their own young.
1.What determined Fritz’s career choice?
A.Fritz’s childhood observation. B.Fritz’s passion for biology.
C.Fritz’s growth environment. D.Fritz’s interaction with animals.
2.What disappointed the scientists about ibis chicks?
A.They are easy to get lost in the migration.
B.They are lacking in the desire to migrate.
C.They are accustomed to the life in the zoo.
D.They are strikingly far from easy to teach.
3.Why did Fritz decide to teach the ibises a new migration route?
A.The ibises were too awkward to find a new migration route.
B.The ibises needed a guide for lack of geographical knowledge.
C.Fritz wanted to prove that he could succeed in a daring plan.
D.Fritz wanted to recreate a touching scene of a popular movie.
4.What is Fritz like according to the passage?
A.sensitive but courageous. B.innovative but demanding.
C.persistent and insightful. D.enthusiastic and cooperative.

Some of those kids were also intellectually disabled. They weren’t even allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria.
Chava now has a communication consulting firm. She even wrote a memoir about her life, titled A Life Not with Standing. Chava became an advocate for disability rights and has dedicated her life to speaking out against discrimination of disabilities in the world. During the pandemic in 2020, Chava spent most of her time inside, starting a YouTube podcast (播客) focusing on one of her passions, music.
There has been positive feedback from listeners who have been touched and inspired by the songs discussed on the podcast. “Chava played a fabulous song called Mother by Tom Paxton. I was listening to it while driving,” said Barbara Schumer, a follower of Chava’s podcast. “The lyrics were about adoption and I started sobbing in the car, since I have two children I adopted at birth. I wrote to her after that, and I think she’s a remarkable person.”
Despite her disability, Chava said, “Having a disability is an important piece of who you are, and I’m not at all in favor of living my life as if the disability is not important. But it shouldn’t be the thing that holds me back from becoming stronger.”
1.What can we learn about Chava from the first two paragraphs?
A.She showed signs of polio at birth. B.She was delayed in polio treatment.

根据第二段“However, it turned out that she was in a single room with a group of kids who all had mobility impairment. Some of those kids were also intellectually disabled. They weren’t even allowed to eat lunch in the cafeteria. (然而,事实证明,她被安排在一个单间里,与其他一群行动不便的孩子在一起,其中一些孩子还存在智力障碍。他们甚至不被允许在食堂吃午餐。)”可知,她在学校受到了不公平的待遇。故选D。
2.推理判断题。根据第四段“The lyrics were about adoption and I started sobbing in the car, since I have two children I adopted at birth. I wrote to her after that, and I think she’s a remarkable person. (歌词是关于领养的,我在车里哭了起来,因为我有两个从出生就被我领养的孩子。之后我给她写了信,我觉得她是一个了不起的人。)”可知,Barbara Schumer被Chava的播客所感动,从而说明Chava的播客对她产生了积极的影响。因此,作者提到Barbara Schumer是为了展示Chava的影响力。故选A。

据最后一段“Having a disability is an important piece of who you are, and I’m not at all in favor of living my life as if the disability is not important. But it shouldn’t be the thing that holds me back from becoming stronger. (残疾是你身份的重要组成部分,我绝不同意过一种忽视残疾重要性的生活。但它也不应该成为阻碍我变得更强大的东西。)”及全文可知,文章通过Chava的故事传达了一个核心信息:尽管她遭受了不幸,但她没有让不幸定义自己,而是积极面对生活,成为了一名倡导者和激励者。因此,文章传达的信息是“不幸不会定义你是谁”。故选C。
主题01 人与社会——社会服务与人际沟通
Sacks is one of the most influential climate change activists on social media today. The lesson from her trash walking isn’t just that we need to produce less stuff. It’s that we need to stop throwing perfectly good items in the trash too.
1.What motivated Anna Sacks to get involved in Adamah?
A.A self-help book she read. B.Her job at a commercial bank.
C.Her desire for a meaningful life. D.The volunteer experience she had.
2.What did Anna Sacks find impressive about Adamah?
A.Fast-growing food output. B.Sustainable living practices.
C.Advanced farming techniques. D.Various waste management methods.
3.Why did Anna Sacks start her “trash walking” initiative?
A.To improve her living conditions. B.To gain popularity on social media.
C.To advertise her food rescue program. D.To handle the damage by consumer culture.
4.What does the author advocate to reduce waste?
A.Raising prices on products. B.Collecting second-hand items.
C.Producing high-quality goods. D.Making full use of products.
【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D 4.D

2.Which of the following statements is TRUE?
A.People are amazed at the number of job opportunities provided by the Starbucks.

D.Numerous people are attracted to stop in after work by the murals with original designs.
3.What does the underlined word “sui generis” mean in Paragraph 3?
A.Substantial. B.Delicate. C.Inspirational. D.Unique.
4.What could be the best title for the passage?

【答案】1.A 2.B 3.D 4.C
文章第一段中“Imagine this: You walk into a place and the atmosphere is light and airy. The subtle scent of coffee beans fills the air and everyone that approaches you is friendly and welcoming. You’re comfortable and feel like you belong. As in most cities, it’s a place where people meet, discuss ideas, and conduct business. After taking a few sips of that Caramel Macchiato, you immediately get that feeling of energy and optimism.(想象一下:你走进一个地方,那里的气氛明亮而通风。空气中弥漫着咖啡豆的清香,每个接近你的人都很友好和热情。你很舒服,觉得自己属于这里。和大多数城市一样,这是一个人们见面、讨论想法和开展业务的地方。喝了几口焦糖玛奇朵后,你会立刻感到精力充沛和乐观)”先描述一个轻松、友好且弥漫着咖啡香气的环境,下文“Perhaps it’s partly due to the caffeine and sugar rush, or maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.(也许部分是由于咖啡因和糖的刺激,或者可能是星巴克的存在通常表明一个城市正在崛起)”接着提出本文的话题:星巴克咖啡馆。 故选A项。
根据第一段中“maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.(也许是因为星巴克的存在通常表明一个城市正在崛起)”和第二段中“To make things better, this Starbucks also serves as an “opportunity café” which essentially means the young people in our communities are recruited and offered job training and employment. This program not only uplifts our youth, but also increases the amount of minority business in the city.(更好的是,这家星巴克也作为一个“机会咖啡馆”,本质上意味着我们社区的年轻人被招募并提供工作培训和就业。这个项目不仅鼓舞了我们的年轻人,而且还增加了城市中少数族裔企业的数量)”可推知,“机会咖啡”项目可以帮助增加就业,促进经常发展,同时鼓舞年轻人,带来精神上的益处。所以““Opportunity café” program helps achieve booming economy and bring spiritual benefits.(“机会咖啡”项目帮助实现经济繁荣,带来精神利益)”是正确的表述。故选B项。
3.词句猜测题。根据第三段中“The interior décor of the café struck a lot of people’s attention, given the familiarity of the atmosphere.(因为它熟悉的氛围,咖啡馆的内部装饰引起了很多人的注意)”和划线词下文“showcasing local monuments like the State House and the famous “Trenton Makes” bridge.(展示了当地的纪念碑,比如州议会大厦和著名的“特伦顿制造”桥)”可推知,咖啡馆内部装饰展示的是特伦顿本地大家熟悉的事物。
通读全文,结合第一段中“maybe it’s that the presence of a Starbucks typically indicates a city on the rise.(也许是因为星巴克的存在通常表明一个城市正在崛起)”、第二段中“In December of 2017, Trenton’s first Starbucks café was opened to the public at 102 Warren Street.(2017年12月,特伦顿的第一家星巴克咖啡馆在沃伦街102号向公众开放)”和最后一段中“This new Starbucks brings a sense of modernity to Downtown Trenton and reminds us that our city is always developing. Open from 6 a. m. until 7 p.m. every day, the building is hardly ever empty.(这家新的星巴克给特伦顿市中心带来了一种现代感,并提醒我们,我们的城市一直在发展。每天从早上6点开放到晚上7点,这家咖啡馆几乎从来没有空过)”可知,文章介绍了特伦顿的第一家星巴克咖啡馆给城市带来了现代感,推动了城市的崛起,营造了发展的氛围,故“Starbucks Sets an Atmosphere of Progress(星巴克营造出发展的氛围)”是文章最佳标题。故选C项。
Passage 3
Passage 1
Deegan’s life shifted in 2015. Encouraged by her friends, she challenged herself to see if she could sell just one pie. She sold dozens! She began baking out of her tiny apartment and eventually launched an official business in 2017. She spent four years developing a pie crust cookie recipe, which has since become the bread and butter of her business. “People have been walking, running and lining up to get cookies, and it’s just been so magical seeing that,” she said.
When she needs more help, Deegan says she looks for anyone who is just excited to work, even if they don’t have any experience. After her own struggle, she realized that the desire to work was better than having a certain skill set. And she became a second-chance employer, hiring women out of prison or the shelter system. “You just have to walk through the door and be ready, willing and able and excited to show up and work and you’ ve got a job,” Deegan told the reporter.
1.What was Deegan mainly struggling with in 2013?

D.Highly motivated and strong-willed.
【答案】1.D 2.D 3.C 4.B

根据第三段“ALS is usually caused by the gradual death of motor neurons(神经元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others’ help to survive.”(肌萎缩侧索硬化症通常是由运动神经元的逐渐死亡引起的,这使得像喝水、吃饭、上厕所和说话等正常的简单运动变得不可能。
根据第四段“However, the intense effort required, which is unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion.”(然而,对于一种如此罕见的疾病,所需要的巨大努力是无利可图的,这使得这项任务几乎不可能完成。 和“Take Alzheimer’s disease for example. Between 2000 and 2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research on more than 300 drugs failed.”(以老年痴呆症为例,2000年至2017年期间,针对这种更常见疾病的新药投资超过6000亿美元,300多种药物的研究中有99.6%失败。)
第一段“Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis(ALS)diagnosis(诊断) set him on the path to find a cure.”(京东集团前副总裁蔡磊透露,肌萎缩性侧索硬化症(ALS)的诊断如何让他踏上了寻找治疗方法的道路。) 以及“However, he has decided that even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.”(然而,他已经决定,即使所有的努力都是徒劳的,他也会继续下去。 B项“A man who never gives in”(一个永不屈服的人)能很好地概括文章内容,符合文意。故选B。
Passage 3
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述Nev Schulman热爱跑步,曾取得不错成绩。某天骑车接儿子时遭遇严重事故,脖子骨折但四肢恢复良好。事故后,盲人朋友Francesco Magisano鼓励他在比赛中为自己引路,他决定恢复跑步并帮助他人实现马拉松目标,最终第六次参加马拉松。
1.词句猜测题。根据前文“They were delighted to see that I had narrowly escaped paralysis. (她们很高兴看到我逃脱瘫痪)”可知,作者遭遇严重事故但奇迹般地没有受到更严重伤害,幸免于瘫痪,由此可推测“close call”意思是“死里逃生,险些遇险”,“A near - miss(幸免,差点出事)”符合语境。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段“However, his friend Francesco Magisano, a blind athlete, encouraged him to guide him in the race. With his recovery, he decided to participate and help someone else achieve their marathon goals(然而,他的朋友弗朗切斯科·马吉萨诺(Francesco Magisano)是一名盲人运动员,他鼓励舒曼在比赛中引导他。随着舒尔曼的恢复进展顺利,他意识到自己既可以参赛,又可以帮助他人实现马拉松目标。)”可知,是他朋友请求他在比赛中引导自己,这激励了他再次跑步。故选C。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段中“After his accident, Schulman faced uncertainty about participating in the upcoming NYC Marathon. However, his friend Francesco Magisano, a blind athlete, encouraged him to guide him in the race. With his recovery progressing well, Schulman realized he could both participate and help someone else achieve their marathon goals. And he did it!(在事故之后,舒尔曼面临着是否能参加即将到来的纽约马拉松的不确定性。

【答案】1.A 2.D 3.B 4.C
根据第一段中“It was what he observed in his boyhood that took root in his pursuit of becoming a biologist. (正是他在少年时代的观察,使他立志成为一名生物学家。)”可知,是Fritz童年的观察决定了他的职业选择。故选A项。
根据第二段中“In 1997, a zoo gave the research center its first northern bald ibis chicks(隐鹮) Nowhere near as teachable as geese—and not even close to super intelligent ravens—the ibises frustrated most of the scientists. (1997年,一家动物园给了研究中心第一批北方秃头朱鹮幼鸟,它们远不如鹅那么容易教,甚至远不如超级聪明的乌鸦——朱鹮让大多数科学家感到沮丧。)”可知,朱鹭幼鸟非常不容易教,这让科学家感到失望。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据第二段中“After the ibises were first released back into the wild more than 20 years ago, Fritz learned that spending generations in zoo hadn’t reduced their drive to migrate(迁徙), though it did leave them geographically uninformed. In their search for ‘south’, some ended up in Russia. What the ibises needed, Fritz thought, was a guide. (20多年前,朱鹭第一次被放生到野外后,Fritz了解到,在动物园里生活几代并没有减少它们迁徙的动力,尽管这确实让它们对地理环境一无所知。在寻找‘南方’的过程中,一些人来到了俄罗斯。Fritz认为,朱鹭需要的是一个向导。)”可知,朱鹭缺乏地理知识,需要一个向导,所以Fritz决定教朱鹭一种新的迁徙路线。故选B项。
4.推理判断题。根据第三段中“Fritz decided he would teach the birds a new, safer migration route by guiding them himself in a tiny aircraft. And he was confident he could succeed in this daring, unconventional plan—because he had done it before. (Fritz决定亲自驾驶一架小飞机,教这些鸟一条新的、更安全的迁徙路线。而且他相信自己能在这个大胆的、非传统的计划中取得成功——因为他以前做过。)”、“When he announced that he’d do the same with the ibises, he was initially laughed at. But Fritz didn’t give up.(当他宣布他将对朱鹭做同样的事情时,他最初遭到了嘲笑。但Fritz没有放弃。)”以及最后一段“In 2004, three years after some initially bumpy(颠簸的) experiments, Fritz led the first batch of birds from Austria to Italy, and has since led 15 such migrations.(2004年,在经历了一些最初坎坷的实验三年后,Fritz带领第一批鸟类从奥地利迁徙到意大利,此后又带领了15次这样的迁徙。)”
