My First Marathon
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles (脚踝) was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my seventh year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my thirties, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces became untied. So I stopped to readjust (重新调整). Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign, “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was really hungry!
As I came to mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels, I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

The body gives off many gases. Although some smells may signal a need to bathe or that you ate a certain meal, other gases might point to serious disease. Now, researchers have come up with a system that uses earmuffs to catch the disease-signaling gases. Doctors could get the information as patients wear a set of earmuffs. Results could be ready within minutes.
“The ear is a good place to monitor (监控),” explains Johnson, a biomedical engineer. The ear’s skin is fairly thin, he notes. So gases don’t have to travel far to get out of the blood and escape through skin pores (毛孔).
To collect the gases, Johnson and his team chose earmuffs that make a tight seal (密封) with the head. These are the type people often wear to protect the ears from loud noise. His team made two holes in the muff covering one ear. A tube slowly pumped (用泵输送) air in one hole. Another tube pulled air out of the second hole and sent it to a sensor.
In their tests, the team found that they could measure changes in the amount of alcohol(酒精) coming from the skin of the ear. It could work much like a Breathalyzer that police use to test people for driving drunk. The team invited three men. Each had to avoid drinking alcohol for at least three days before taking part. Once in the lab, these men wore the earmuffs and sat for 10 minutes as the system recorded normal gas levels leaving their ears. Afterward, the men drank a big amount of alcohol. About 7 minutes later, the earmuff system tested out a rise in alcohol leaving the skin. After 50 minutes, alcohol levels reached the top and continued falling until the test was over.
The team then measured other gases by changing out the sensor. With the right sensor, their earmuff system could test out disease. Later, they replaced the earmuffs with a one-eared version to make it a bit more comfortable.
Johnson imagines another possible benefit. The earmuff system could help doctors tell whether a child’s ear infections (感染) have been caused by bacteria or a virus. How? Each type of infection exudes different gases. That, in turn, could guide how doctors cure the disease.
27. What makes the ear a good place to monitor?
A. Its small size. B. Its thin skin. C. Its clean surface. D. Its blood flow.
28. The word “exudes” in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.
A. collects B. gives off C. cuts off D. uses
29. What did Johnson and his team find in their tests?
A. Sensors should be examined in time.
B. Drunk-driving tests were ineffective.
C. Their system could be used to tell diseases.
D. Serious diseases were difficult to recognize.
【答案】27. B 28. B 29. C

【28题详解】
词义猜测题。根据“Each type of infection exudes different gases. That, in turn, could guide how doctors cure the disease.”以及前文对人体释放气体的描述,可推测“exudes”意为“释放”,与“gives off”意思相近。故选B。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据“In their tests, the team found that they could measure changes in the amount of alcohol coming from the skin of the ear. It could work much like a Breathalyzer that police use to test people for driving drunk.”以及“With the right sensor, their earmuff system could test out disease.”可知,约翰逊和他的团队发现他们的系统可以用于检测疾病。故选C。
D
Smile! It makes everyone in the room feel better because they are smiling with you. Growing evidence shows that an instinct (本能) for facial mimicry (模仿) allows us to understand and even experience other people’s feelings. If we can’t mirror another person’s face, it limits our ability to read and properly react to their expressions. A review of this emotional mirroring appears on February 11 in Trends in Cognitive Sciences.
In their paper, Paula Niedenthal and Adrienne Wood, social psychologists at the University of Wisconsin, describe how people in social situations copy others’ facial expressions to create emotional responses in themselves. For example, if you’re with a friend who looks sad, you might “try on” that sad face yourself without realizing you’re doing so. In “trying on” your friend’s expression, it helps you to recognize what they’re feeling by connecting with times in the past when you made that expression. Humans get this emotional meaning from facial expressions in a matter of only a few hundred milliseconds.
“You reflect on your emotional feelings and then you form some sort of recognition judgment, and the most important thing that results in is that you take the right action—you go near the person or you avoid the person,” Niedenthal says. “Your own emotional reaction to the face changes how you see the face in such a way that provides you with more information about what it means.”
A person’s ability to recognize and “share” others’ emotions can be prevented when they can’t mimic faces. This is a common complaint for people with motor diseases like facial paralysis (瘫痪) caused by nerve damage from plastic surgery (手术). Niedenthal notes that the same would not be true for people who suffer from paralysis from birth, because if you’ve never had the ability to mimic facial expressions, you will have developed other ways of recognizing emotions.
People with social disorders like autism (自闭症), can also experience similar challenges. “There are some symptoms in autism where lack of facial mimicry may in part be due to limitation of eye contact (接触),” Niedenthal says.
Niedenthal next wants to explore what part in the brain is functioning to help with facial expression recognition. A better understanding of that part, she says, will give us a better idea of how to treat related disorders.
30. According to the passage, facial mimicry helps ________.
A. react to others’ expressions properly B. change others’ emotions quickly
C. develop friendship with others easily D. experience one’s own feelings clearly
31. What can we learn from Paragraph 4 and Paragraph 5?
A. People with motor diseases may also suffer from autism.
B. People born with facial paralysis may still recognize emotions.
C. People with social disorders can’t have eye contact with others.
D. People receiving plastic surgery have difficulty in copying faces.
32. According to Niedenthal, the next step of the study will focus on ________.
A. how we can treat brain disorders
B. what can be done to regain facial mimicry
C. how our brain helps us with emotional mirroring
D. what part of our brain helps recognize facial expressions
33. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A. To discuss how people react positively to others’ smiles.
B. To draw people’s attention to those with social disorders.
C. To introduce people’s ability to recognize facial expressions.
D. To explain how emotional mirroring helps people feel for others.

It was a dark and stormy night. The ferocious wind shook the windows wildly, as though someone outside were beating on the glass. It was also New Year’s Eve. We were having our annual party just starting to celebrate.
Suddenly, we heard loud explosions (爆炸声). Looking outside and up into the hills, we saw sparks (火花) flying from electrical transformers (变压器). One area after another went dark up in those hills. Then there was the loudest explosion of them all and our house went dark too. I tried to find every candle we had and lit them. The candles made everything look lovely. But we had problems. We had fifteen people standing around and we still had to prepare for the dinner. How would we do that when there was no electricity? The barbecue (烤架)! Why not cook on the barbecue? We men went outside, some holding flashlights and others cooking. We did a wonderful job. The women stayed inside and got the salads ready. Everything was delicious. There were still a few hours to go before the beginning of the new year, so we all sat around the dining room table and sang up until a few minutes before midnight. We couldn’t watch the ball drop in Times Square on television, but that wouldn’t stop us from celebrating. I stood on a chair and, with the help of someone’s watch to tell us the time, we all counted down and I dropped a tennis ball! We all screamed Happy New Year. We didn’t need electricity for that!
Nowadays, we still get together with the same group to celebrate the New Year and we still talk about that special night. I don’t think we have ever laughed so much as we did on that New Year’s Eve.

【答案】
例文:
Dear Chris,
How is it going?
I’m glad that you are organizing activities for the School Service Day. I have some ideas for you. First, you could organize a campus clean-up activity. Students can clean up the playground and classrooms. This will make your school more beautiful and teach everyone responsibility. Second, how about a repair workshop? Students can learn to repair broken chairs or tables. It’s a fun way to develop practical skills and help others. Third, gardening is a great idea. Planting flowers or vegetables in the school garden can be enjoyable and educational. It helps us appreciate nature and work together.
Hope my advice is useful.
Yours,
Li Hua

My First Marathon
A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles (脚踝) was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my seventh year in school. In my first P.E. class the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball.
24. A month before the marathon, the writer ________.
A. made up his mind to run B. felt scared
C. was well trained D. lost hope
25. Why did the writer mention the P.E. class in his seventh year?
A. To tell the readers a funny story.
B. To share a most treasured memory.
C. To show he was not talented in sports.
D. To remember the support of his teacher.
26. What can we learn from the story?
A. One is never too old to learn. B. Failure is the mother of success.

27 What makes the ear a good place to monitor?
A. Its small size. B. Its thin skin. C. Its clean surface. D. Its blood flow.
28. The word “exudes” in Paragraph 6 probably means “________”.
A. collects B. gives off C. cuts off D. uses
29. What did Johnson and his team find in their tests?
A Sensors should be examined in time.
B. Drunk-driving tests were ineffective.
C. Their system could be used to tell diseases.
D. Serious diseases were difficult to recognize.
D

四、阅读表达(第34-36题每题2分,第37题4分,共10分)
阅读短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
