But here’s something you might not know: arts can actually improve kids’ self-esteem (自尊). As a new middle schooler, it’s easy to compare yourself with others and feel like you’re not good enough. A new study suggests that taking part in arts activities is an easy way for kids to feel better. The study looks at 6,209 eleven-year-old kids. These kids report how often they engage (参与) in arts activities at home, such as playing or listening to music, drawing or painting, and reading for enjoyment. The result? Kids who do these activities most days have much higher self-esteem than those who do them less often. When comparing daily art lovers with kids who take part in the arts less than once a month, the difference in confidence (自信心) is twice as big! For reading, as well as music-playing or listening, the rise in self-esteem needs one thing—kids have to do it with their parents at least once or twice a week. Painting and drawing, however, help build higher self-esteem whether parents are there or not. The act of creating art may help kids feel special and proud, with or without their parents. The best part of the findings is that kids don’t need to be good at arts to feel better. Teachers in the program studied the kids’ art skills, and “being good” didn’t matter. What counts is just doing it. For example, when you draw a funny cat with too big eyes, you might think, “That’s my cat—no one else could make it like this.” That feeling of being special is what builds confidence. Arts aren’t just about self-esteem. Other studies show they can also help with grades and make kids smarter. So next time you worry, “I’m not good at this,” grab a pencil, turn on the music, or open a fun book.
