Cities can boost happiness just as much as the countryside — as long as they are scenic, according to experts.
Naturally open spaces are typically considered to create a better mood. But in the first study of its kind, scientists found areas with lots of old buildings but not much green space can be just as good for our well-being. And the effect could be the same regardless of the weather, how wealthy the area is, the activities that take place there and the day of the week.
The research leader said, “We find that people are indeed happier in more scenic environments. Built-up areas, which might consist of characterful buildings or bridges, also have a positive link to happiness.”
The researchers made a survey among more than 15,000 users of the app Happiness. People are asked to report on their happiness multiple times per day while recording their current location, who they are with and what they are currently doing.
To determine whether individuals are happier in more scenic environments, the team considered a range of factors that may also play a part. For example, traveling to or from your work is negatively associated with happiness, while leisure activities such as resting, gardening and walking are positively associated with happiness.
The researchers said, “We find that people do report themselves to be happier when in a more scenic location, even after controlling for weather, activities, companionship, weekdays or weekends.”
Although natural elements such as ponds, rivers and forest paths improved ratings on a photograph, so did churches, cottages and towers.
A study surveyed 400,000 people across Canada using a widely-recognized happiness scale. They found that city dwellers (居民) have higher salaries, higher education levels and lower unemployment rates. However, that meant nothing in terms of joy: people who lived in the countryside were, on average, eight times happier than people in urban areas.
4. Which of the following is the key factor that leads to one’s happiness?
A. Beautiful places. B. Tall buildings.
C. Fine weather. D. Rich places.
5. What can we know from the passage?
A. City dwellers are much happier than those living in the countryside.
B. One is happier when he lives in an area with lots of buildings.
C. One is happier to do the gardening than to travel to work.
D. People are unhappier to rest at home than to make money.
6. Which is mentioned as what makes a photo look better?
A. Railway tracks, ponds and rivers. B. Forest paths, cottages and towers.
C. Flying planes, forests and crops. D. City buildings, subways and ships.
7. Where can you most likely read this passage?
A. In a photography book. B. In a guidebook.
C. In a technology report. D. In a health magazine.
【答案】4. A 5. C 6. B 7. D

C
People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.
To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later. In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.
“The study didn’t look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,” Kotz says. “Crops may be drying out on the vine when they should be being harvested.” Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.
Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz’s team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. “We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,” says Kotz. “Warming-fuelled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don’t adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.”
8. What does the study focus on?
A. The factors in the rising living costs.
B. The impact of climate change on food prices.
C. The effects of natural disasters on food production.
D. The comparison of food prices in different regions.
9. How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A. By analyzing a mass of data. B. By referring to previous studies.
C. By tracking some cities for years. D. By conducting a survey among farmers.
10. What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A. Frequent rainfall. B. Extreme high temperature.
C. The increasing demand for crops. D. The restrictions of trade policies.
11. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. To investigate how food prices change. B. To predict the loss caused by the heat wave.
C. To urge farmers to adjust their practices. D. To clarify the situation of global food inflation.
【答案】8. B 9. A 10. B 11. C

逐一把七个选项代入可发现,这里C(班级规模可能很大。)承上启下,符合语境。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答.
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

Spot — the four-legged Internet-famous robot dog well-known for opening doors, climbing steps with ease, and even taking clean dishes out of the dishwasher — has just landed a full-time job at an oil and gas company in Norway.
At some point this year, the Boston Dynamics robot will begin inspecting an Aker BP’s oil and gas production vessel (船) at the Skarv field in the Norwegian Sea, Bloomberg reports. There, it will examine the vessel carefully, look for oil and gas leaks (泄漏), and put together reports based on the data it collects.
Aker BP, which has spent large amounts of money digitizing(数字化)the oil and gas industry, wants to use Spot to make offshore operations safer, the company said during a presentation of the robot in Oslo today. According to Bloomberg, Aker BP will run the tests with software controlled by its parent company.
“These things never get tired. They have a greater ability to adapt(适应)and to collect data(数据),” Kjetel Digre, Aker BP’s Senior Vice President, told Bloomberg. CEO Karl Johnny Hersvik said that he was “pretty sure” more robots would finally join the operation in the future.
Aker BP has an agreement with an AI software company called Cognite(智能科技) to work out which task Spot is best suited to, and then use it in the wild. They’ve already tested Spot in simulated (模拟的) environments.
Boston Dynamics (动力学)has made Spot available for companies to employ since September 2019, and since then about 75 companies have used one. One is also working with the Massachusetts State Police bomb squad (爆破小组). Boston Dynamics said this won’t be the last time a robot dog lands a job. On its website, Boston Dynamics promotes(促进)Spot for use in construction, public safety, oil and gas applications, and even entertainment.
12. What will Spot do on an Aker BP’s oil and gas production vessel?
A. Help operate it.
B. Wash oil and gas pipes.
C. Check for anything wrong.
D. Test software controlling it.
13. What is the attitude of Aker BP’s leaders to robots like Spot?
A. Curious. B. Uncertain. C. Doubtful. D. Confident.
14. Why did Aker BP work with Cognite?
A. To develop Spot’s market.
B. To make Spot have more abilities.
C. To make sure Spot works well.
D. To work out software for Spot.
15 What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The wide use of robot dogs.
B. Aker BP’s plans for the future.
C. A growing need for robot dogs.
D. The promising future of Aker BP.
