Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the Museum of Bad Art! Yes, you heard it right — bad art. You might be wondering why we would celebrate something that seems so strange. But we believe that bad art brings out a different kind of beauty. I’m sure it will surprise you. At first, the co-founder, an art dealer named Scott Wilson, found a painting next to a garbage can and saved it. Then he put it on a special exhibition with some other unfavorable paintings. Unexpectedly, it became a huge hit. So, this museum is a reminder that creativity knows no limits, and that even the least liked pieces can move us deeply. As you journey through our collection, you will see pieces that challenge your traditional opinions of what art should be. Paintings featuring odd figures, strange colors, and unique subjects will catch your eye. The other co-founder of the museum, Marie Jackson, said it was built to celebrate an artist’s right to fail. At the Museum of Bad Art, beautiful mistakes become unforgettable masterpieces.

“Wildlife Services. How may I help you?” A concerned woman’s voice described a possible injured animal on the roadside — something with brown, black, and white fur, moving in the wind. “Perhaps it was someone’s loving cat or dog. Maybe a fox? I wasn’t sure. But it might be wounded and need help.” She sounded genuinely worried. She even called it “Fluffy.”
So, I set off in the morning wind, driving along the stretch of road she mentioned. Beautiful day. But there was no sign of any animal, injured or otherwise. I made a note and headed back, figuring the creature might have moved on. Case closed, or so I thought.
The next day, the same lady called back. I told her my findings, and she seemed relieved. I thought that was the end of it. But not an hour later, my phone rang again. It was her. Her voice was a mix of excitement and urgency. “I see it again! It’s farther down the road, behind some bushes. I can see its tail moving! I’ll wait here for you.”
I turned the truck around and headed back. Sure enough, a car was parked on the shoulder, and a woman was waving me over. I eased my way into a parking space. She pointed eagerly toward the bushes.
Parting the branches, I saw it immediately. And I had to stop. I looked closer, just to be absolutely sure. A laugh simply exploded from me. I tried to be polite, but it was hopeless. I was laughing as I walked back to the waiting woman, who was starting to look a little offended.
I held out my prize. “Ma’am,” I said, trying to catch my breath. “I found your Fluffy.” There, in my hand was a colorful winter hat with a big, fluffy (毛茸茸的), 100% cotton pom-pom (绒球).
24. Why did the woman call Wildlife Services that morning?
A. To rescue her long-lost pet.
B. To return a newly found hat.

She even called it “Fluffy.”(她听起来确实很担心。她还给它起了个名字叫“弗拉菲”。)”和第三段的“The next day, the same lady called back.(第二天,那位女士又打来了电话。)”

If you have ever driven coast to coast across the United States, chances are that you have passed beneath the flight of a fearless songbird, the cliff swallow (崖燕). Unlike most wildlife that retreat from human footprint, the cliff swallow has survived alongside it. Originally a bird of the western mountains, it has, over the past century, colonized the Great Plains, building its mud nests beneath bridges — wonders of natural engineering like our own.
For nearly forty years, researcher Charles Brown has conducted annual surveys of hundreds of these nesting colonies in Nebraska, seeking to understand the dynamics of swallow society. He has found that in western Nebraska, most cliff swallows live within a stone’s throw of a road.
This choice of habitat is, of course, exceptionally dangerous. When Brown began studying swallows in the 1980s, he often picked up dead swallows on the roads. In 2012, however, Brown suddenly found, though, there was virtually no roadkill to be found. He’d collected twenty dead birds in 1984, when the project began, and twenty more in 1985 and 1986. Then the trend line went downward: fifteen in 1989, thirteen in 1991, eight in 2002. By 2011 it had dropped to four. Brown thought: somehow swallows had become harder to kill.
By measuring the birds’ wings, he saw that the swallows killed by cars usually had longer wings than the ones he caught alive. Brown knew what this meant: The traffic was weeding clumsier, long-winged swallows from the population and favoring the quicker, short-winged ones — Darwinian selection in action.
“Long ago,” Brown said, “cliff swallows lived mostly apart from humans. Now, they are so much a part of our world that our roads and bridges have changed their very genes.” The cliff swallows became rare winners in a world of concrete and steel. But this success came with a cost — the loss of the long-winged swallows and a permanent change to the birds’ nature. They had been shaped, forever, by the road.
28. What does the underlined part “retreat from” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Avoids. B. Expands. C. Erases. D. Reduces.
29. How is paragraph 3 mainly developed?
A. By providing data. B. By extending a definition.
C. By giving examples. D. By making a classification.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly talking about?
A. Backgrounds of a study. B. Reasons for a phenomenon.
C. Theories of natural selection. D. Assumptions about an experiment.
31. What did cliff swallows’ survival cost them?
A. Their genes became abnormal.
B. Their population declined sharply.
C They were edged out of Great Plains.
D. Long-winged swallows were weeded out.
A 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第一段中划线词所在句“Unlike most wildlife that retreat from human footprint, the cliff swallow has survived alongside it. (与大多数retreat from人类足迹的野生动物不同,崖燕一直与人类共存。)”可知,崖燕能与人类共存,而大多数野生动物则相反,会“躲避”人类活动痕迹。“retreats from”为“避开,远离”之意,与“Avoid”意思相近。故选A项。
根据第三段中“He’d collected twenty dead birds in 1984, when the project began, and twenty more in 1985 and 1986. Then the trend line went downward: fifteen in 1989, thirteen in 1991, eight in 2002. By 2011 it had dropped to four. (1984年项目开始时,他收集了20只死鸟,1985年和1986年又收集了20只。然后趋势线开始下降:1989年15只,1991年13只,2002年8只。到2011年,这一数字已经降至4只。)”可知,本段主要是通过提供数据来说明崖燕被车辆撞死的数量在逐年减少。故选A项。
根据第四段中“By measuring the birds’ wings, he saw that the swallows killed by cars usually had longer wings than the ones he caught alive. Brown knew what this meant: The traffic was weeding clumsier, long-winged swallows from the population and favoring the quicker, short-winged ones — Darwinian selection in action.
根据最后一段中“But this success came with a cost — the loss of the long-winged swallows and a permanent change to the birds’ nature. (但这种成功是有代价的——长翼崖燕的消失和鸟类本性的永久改变。)”可知,崖燕的生存是以长翼崖燕的消失为代价的。故选D项。
D
We’ve all had that edgy feeling, that urge to be doing something — anything — other than what we’re doing right now. It’s boredom. Boredom doesn’t just color the time spent sitting in waiting rooms or watching dull television shows. It can also come into the larger patterns of our lives, such as our jobs and relationships. And it brings a message. Just like pain. Pain is your body’s way of telling you that something is wrong, and that you need to do something about it. Boredom is telling you that what you’re doing is not a good fit for the mental or emotional resources you have at that moment.
You may have heard that boredom increases creativity, and some research seems to suggest that it does. But more recent research has called the idea into question, says Andreas Elpidorou, author of Propelled: How Boredom, Frustration, and Anticipation Lead Us to the Good Life. A 2016 study found that boredom probably does not generate creativity. Practice does. In fact, the study found that in many cases, boredom damaged fluency in creative tasks.
However, there may be a connection between boredom and creativity. Elpidorou points out that you can respond to boredom in creative ways. And that gets us to what may be the most important fact about boredom: Whether it’s helpful or harmful depends on how you respond to it.
When that edgy feeling crops up, it’s easy to immediately reach for your phone and start scrolling (滚动) on social media, or worse. Individuals who are prone (易受……影响的) to boredom are more likely to abuse drugs and alcohol, according to some research. On the other hand, boredom can push you toward more meaningful tasks, says Elpidorou. When boredom strikes, you might call a friend you haven’t heard from in a while, go for a walk or to the gym, or pick up your guitar and play that tune you’ve been working on. The trick, of course, is to pay attention to that boredom alert and make a conscious decision about how to respond.
32. What do “pain” and “boredom” have in common?
A. They generate a need for change.
B. They relates to large patterns of life.
C. They reflect similar mental problems.
D. They’re indicators of physical harm.
33. What might the recent research have discovered?
A. Boredom enhances creativity.
B. Creativity arises from practice.
C. Creative tasks improve quality of life.
D. Boredom correlates with language fluency.
34. What might Elpidorou suggest doing to deal with boredom?
A. Paying no attention to it.
B. Scrolling on social media.
C. Drowning it in alcohol.
D. Choosing meaningful engagement.
35. Which is the best title of the text?
A. The Essence of Boredom B. The Origin of Creativity
C. Creativity: A Mental Trick D. Boredom: A Critical Crossroad
A 33. B 34. D 35. D

F 37. A 38. G 39. C 40. D
根据后文“Or was it from my aunt, who always seemed to be wandering somewhere far away?(还是说这是来自我的姑妈呢?她似乎总是行踪不定,不知漂泊在何处)”可知,后文用“Or was it from my aunt”表选择疑问,前文需对应相同句式,F项“这是不是我父亲出差时给我留下的问候信息呢?”符合“or”连接的选择逻辑,衔接自然。故选F。
【37题详解】
根据上文“Postcards make the finest souvenirs (纪念品).(明信片是最棒的纪念品)”以及后文“Whether you’re wandering through the green hills of Scotland or on a road trip across Texas, postcards are wonderfully light and can be put neatly into all sorts of places — between the pages of a book, inside a camera bag, or within a laptop sleeve.(无论你是漫步在苏格兰的青山之中,还是驾车穿越德克萨斯州的公路,明信片都十分轻便,可以整齐地放置在各种地方——比如书页之间、相机包里或者笔记本电脑的保护套内)”可知,前文提明信片是“最好的纪念品”,后文说其“轻便、可整齐放置”,A项“它们从不加重行李负担”承接“轻便”特性,呼应后文储存方式。故选A。
根据后文“When you receive a handwritten card from a friend, sent from a place you’ve never been and filled with their personal stories, it’s hard not to feel inspired to one day set out and create your own.(当你收到一位朋友寄来的手写贺卡时,那贺卡来自一个你从未去过的地方,里面还充满了他们个人的故事,这时你很难不被这种激励所感染,从而萌生出有一天也要踏上旅程、去创造属于自己的美好事物的想法)”可知,该空是一个独立的段落,通常是一个主题句。
根据上文“Best of all, just about anything can become a postcard. I’m not joking.(最棒的是,几乎任何事物都能变成一张明信片。我可不是在开玩笑)”以及后文“I was living in New England at the time and wanted to share the brilliant colors of the season with her back home. I carefully chose a red-and-orange leaf, slipped it into an envelope, and sent it off. I wasn’t sure it would survive the journey through the mail, but to my delight, it arrived perfectly.(当时我住在新英格兰地区,我想把这个季节绚丽的色彩寄给她在家乡的家人。

I had just graduated from high school. The stretch of summer ahead seemed perfect for trying something new. My mother had suggested finding a local job, perhaps working at the community library sorting books or helping with checkouts. “It’ll be good for you. You’ve always loved books,” she said. That was true. I had even organized a very successful book club at my senior high. Thus, when I saw a call for volunteers at the Community Center, I applied specifically for library work—shelving books, helping with checkouts, the quiet tasks I knew I could handle. It sounded perfect.
Then, the letter from the Community Center came. It read: “We’re delighted to welcome you as our Summer Reading Guide for children aged 8-9.” My hands trembled. Guide? Teaching? This wasn’t what I’d signed up for.
Panicked, I called the program director. “There must be a mistake,” I said. “I applied for library work, not teaching.”
“I understand,” she said gently, “but our children’s program is desperate. The previous teacher left suddenly. We need someone who genuinely loves reading, and your book club experience stands out.” I asked her to let me think it over and promised to give her my answer tomorrow.
That night, I confessed (坦白) my fears to my mother. “I’m not ready for this. What if I disappoint them?”
She reminded me, “Remember your first book club meeting? You were nervous then too, but you created something wonderful. These children don’t need a perfect teacher—they need someone who can share the magic of stories.”
Her words sparked (引发) an idea. What if I recreated the book club experience, but made it even more engaging for young readers? I rushed into the study and looked through the pile of children’s books on my desk. I felt a new sense of purpose.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, I called the director back. My heart pounded as the phone rang, but my voice was firm when I said, “I’ll do it.” I explained my book club idea—transforming the classroom into an interactive storytelling space where children could act out scenes, create artwork inspired by the stories, and even rewrite endings together. The director’s enthusiastic response was immediate. “That sounds fantastic! We’ll give you full support.” Hanging up, I felt a wave of nervous excitement washing over. I spent the rest of the week reading different children’s books, designing simple discussion questions, and planning creative activities, my initial anxiety slowly being replaced by a budding sense of anticipation.
The following Monday, I stood before a group of bright-eyed children. Their curious gazes fixed on me, and for a moment, my mind went blank. Then, I remembered my mother’s words. I held up our first book, took a deep breath, and began not just reading, but performing the story, giving characters silly voices and encouraging the children to guess what might happen next. When I paused to ask, “What would you do if you were the brave mouse in this story?” a forest of hands shot up. Their answers were imaginative and profound. As they eagerly started drawing their own book covers and debating the hero’s choices, the room was filled with energy. I looked at their engaged, smiling faces and realized I wasn’t just teaching; we were discovering the magic of stories together, and my summer had become far more perfect than I had ever planned.

C. They were edged out of Great Plains.
D. Long-winged swallows were weeded out.

B They relates to large patterns of life.

What if I recreated the book club experience but made it even more engaging for young readers? I rushed into the study and looked through the pile of children’s books on my desk. I felt a new sense of purpose.
注意:
1. 续写词数应150左右;
The next morning, I called the director back.
