Officer Julian and Christina parked in front of the bus station and saw that an ambulance had arrived before them. There was a call about an old woman lying on the ground. They came to check things out.
They exited their car and saw a doctor tending to the old woman, who was luckily conscious (有意识) and talking.
“Mrs Logan?” Christina and Julian questioned with wide eyes. They both realised they knew the old woman.
The old woman looked up and finally recognised them.“Julian! Christina! I haven't seen you since you graduated from high school. What are you doing here?” she said breathlessly.“We were asked to come to check things after the call came through 911.Is everything alright? What are you doing in this bus station?” Christina placed her hands on the old woman's shoulders.
Years ago,Mrs Logan was their math teacher. She lived alone in Minnesota after her husband died.“I was hoping to go to Florida to see my son Peter.I haven't heard from him for months. There are lots of hurricanes in Florida.I need to make sure he's safe,” Mrs Logan explained.
Considering the doctor's advice against Mrs Logan travelling alone by bus especially as far as Florida,Julian softly suggested she go home and rest. However,Mrs Logan begged for their help in a weak voice.Moved by her,Julian and Christina decided to drive her to Florida themselves to help realise her wish.
Four days later, they finally reached Florida, only to find everywhere was in a mess.Obviously,a terrible hurricane had hit this area days before. They hurried to her son's home.It was destroyed completely and Peter was nowhere to be found.Mrs Logan broke down on Christina's shoulder.“Don't worry,Mrs Logan.” Christina hugged the old woman close to her body protectively.
About an hour later, they were told that Peter was in hospital, still alive.

Ⅰ.阅读理解(共8小题;每小题2.5分,满分20分)
A
Journalists are the major group of people who make their living from writing. Many young people who see themselves as future novelists choose journalism as a way of earning a living while developing their writing skills.Although writing for newspapers and writing for books require different qualities, the aspiration (志向)to be a great writer is not one to be discouraged in a would-be journalist.
Most people want their work to be recognised by others. This helps to give it value. Some people also want themselves to be recognised,so that they have status in the eyes of society. It is not a bad motive to wish to be famous, but this must never become your main reason for being a journalist. You will not be a good journalist if you care more for impressing your audience than for serving their needs.
Knowing the power of the printed or spoken word or image, some people enter journalism for the power it will give them to influence people. There is a strong belief that journalists control the mass media but the best journalists recognise their role as servants of the people. There is a difference between the desire to influence events for your own sake, and the desire to do it for other people. You should never use journalism for selfish ends, but you can use it to improve the life of other people.
Curiosity is a natural part of most people's characters and an important ingredient for any journalist.Lots of young men and women enter the profession with the desire to know more about the world without needing to specialise in limited fields of study. Most journalists tend to know a little bit about a lot of things, rather than a lot about one subject.Knowledge has many uses.It can simply help to make you a fuller and more interesting person. It can also give you power over people, especially people who do not have that particular knowledge.Always bear in mind that power can be used in a positive way to improve people's lives.

I was 6 years old when my father told me we were leaving the Big Apple Circus (马戏团).Until that point,I had spent most of my life on the circus lot, playing with the other circus kids. The circus,by its nature,is one that has a loose structure. So the early years after my leaving the circus to sit in a classroom all day felt more like a prison.
But years later,I found areas that interested me.I took the skills I had learned from being onstage and applied them to broadcasting. And so when Boston's news station WBUR offered me a job out of college,I jumped at the chance.Along the way,I found I really enjoyed the work.I became WBUR's news reporter. The flexibility and adaptability I'd learned in the circus as a child helped me do my job naturally and easily in a stressful situation—whether it was a destructive tornado outside Boston,or the Boston Marathon bombings of 2013.
But then a serious infectious disease appeared.Suddenly, for the first time in my adult life,I went for a year without doing any shows. But it became clear to me that performing was what I truly wanted. For me,the circus symbolises who I am.And stages have always been where I've felt the most free. Some people get nervous before they go onstage, but by assuming (扮演) the character of Jacques ze Whipper and drawing a stupid moustache on my face, all my social anxiety disappears.
Circus performances go beyond age, socioeconomic status, and even language. It's the type of performance where you can go anywhere in the world to entertain anyone—help anyone forget their troubles for 5,10,and even 30 minutes. And most importantly, for me,it means coming home.
