Bad news sells. If it bleeds, it leads. No news is good news, and good news is no news. Those are the classic ____21____ for the evening broadcasts and the morning papers. But now that information is being spread and monitored in different ways, researchers are discovering new Rules.
Scientists ____22____ people’s e-mails and online posts, and found that good news spread faster and farther than ____23____ and sad stories.
“The ‘if it bleeds’ rule works for mass media,” says Jonah Berger, a scholar at the University of Pennsylvania. “They want your eyeballs and don’t care how you’re feeling. But when you share a story with your friends, you care a lot more how they ____24____. You don’t want them to think of you as a Debbie Downer.” Researchers studying word-of-mouth communication — e-mails, Webposts and reviews, face-to-face conversations found that it tended to be more positive than negative, but that didn’t ____25____ mean people preferred positive news. Was positive news shared more often simply because people experienced more good things than bad things?
To test for that ____26____, Dr. Berger looked at how people spread a particular set of news stories: thousands of articles on The New York Times’ website. He and a Penn colleague ____27____ the “most e-mailed” list for six months. One of his first findings was that articles in the science section were much more likely to make the ____28____ than non-science articles. He found that science amazed Times’ readers and made them want to share this ____29____ feeling with others.
Readers also tended to share articles that were exciting or funny, or that ____30____ negative feelings like anger or anxiety, but not articles that left them merely sad. They needed to be aroused one way or the other, and they preferred good news to bad. The more positive an article, the more likely it was to be shared, as Dr. Berger explains in his new book Contagious: Why Things Catch On.

But man did come along, farmed the land, ____32____ the wolves killing their livestock (家畜) and so gradually drove them out of the homes that had once been theirs.
Wolves are not ____33____ in our language and our literature, however. In fairy stories, they are seen as evil and dangerous, always ____34____ to eat people. And when they do ____39____, their 42 large teeth are fearsomely effective.

Only ____41____ do writers treat them nicely; ____42____, a she-wolf is supposed to have fed the twins Remus and Romulus, who went on to found the city of Rome.
And so, while man kills animals in their millions, often just for the fun of it, the wolf on the mountain, out in the wilderness, running over the Siberian wastes, represents a state of natural ____43____ that we do not know and can never obtain, even though we ____44____ it in our hearts. Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you have just read.
(A)
It Tastes Just Like Chicken
Away from home, eating is more than just a way to keep your stomach full. It is a language all its own, and no words can say, “Glad to meet you… glad to be doing business with you…” quite like sharing a meal offered by your host.
Clearly, mealtime is not the time for you to say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” Acceptance of the food on your plate means acceptance of host, country, and company. So, no matter how difficult it may be to swallow, swallow. Or, as one experienced traveller says, “Travel with a cast-iron stomach and eat everything everywhere.”
Often, the food offered represents proudly your host country’s eating culture. What would Americans think of a French person who refused to take a bite of homemade apple pie or sirloin? Our discomfort comes not so much from the thing itself, it comes from our unfamiliarity with it. After all, an oyster has remarkably the same look as a sheep’s eye; and a first look at a lobster would remind almost anybody of a creature from a science fiction movie, not something you dip in butter and eat. By the way, in Saudi Arabia, sheep’s eyes are a famous dish and in parts of China, it’s bear’s paw soup.
Can you refuse such food without being rude? Most experienced business travellers say no, at least not before taking at least a few bites. It helps, though, to slice any item very thin. This way, you minimize the taste and the reminder of where it came from. Or, “Swallow it quickly,” as one traveller recommends. “I still can’t tell you what sheep’s eyes taste like.” As for dealing with taste, the old line that “it tastes just like chicken” is often thankfully true. Even when the “it” is really rat or snake.
Another useful piece of advice is not knowing what you are eating. What’s for dinner? Don’t ask. Avoid glancing into the kitchen or looking at English-language menus. Your host will be pleased that you are eating the food he offers, and who knows? Maybe it really is chicken in that soup.

On a summer in 1871, a young artist sat high upon a cliff in the American West. He was fascinated by the magnificence of the wilderness he saw. In the distance the Yellowstone River came crashing down a huge waterfall into a basin of sky blue. Below him lay enormous valley walls, violently carved out of the cream-yellow stone.
To paint these wonders, the thin, strong man had endured a four-day ride on the newly built Northern Pacific Railroad. He was travelling as an artist on a survey team. The work he created as a result of this trip would introduce thousands of Americans to the glorious landscape of their own country — and help to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the US.
While the bearded figure sat gazing at the marvelous views around him, he wondered if he could capture on paper all the glories he saw. Alone with his watercolors and drawing pencils, 34-year-old Thomas Moran began to draw.
The artist who did so much for the American West was born into a family of weavers in Bolton, England, in 1837. When Moran was seven, his family moved to Philadelphia, where they worked long hours at the loom (织布机).
A sensitive young man, Moran spent his early adulthood improving his art without formal education. Day trips outside the city introduced him to the beauty of sloping hillsides and shining riverbeds, and he translated all these sights into oil paintings that grew more assured as time went by. He sold enough of these early works to keep going.
By 1870 Moran was illustrating articles for Scribner’s Monthly magazine. One article, written by explorer Nathaniel Langford, described a mysterious region in the West called Yellowstone as “the place where hell bubbled up.” By reworking drawings made by members of Langford’s journey and using his own imagination, Moran drew a fantastic world of erupting geysers (喷涌的间歇泉) and other splendid views.
52. The description in paragraph 1 is meant to ________.
A. reveal the danger of Moran’s trip B. stress the popularity of the Yellowstone
C. show how remarkable the scenery is D. introduce Moran’s delicate painting skills
53. What can be learned from the passage about Thomas Moran?
A. He discovered the Yellowstone by accident.
B. He went to an art school to train as an artist.
C. He appealed to the government to set up a national park.
D. He drew the geysers before seeing them in person.
54. The word “illustrating” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. giving examples to B. supplying pictures for
C. explaining the themes of D. writing introductions to
55. What is the best title of the passage?
A. The Man Who Gave US Yellowstone B. Thomas Moran and His Masterpieces
C. A Unique and Adventurous Trip D. A National Park That Has Grand Views
C 53. D 54. B 55. A
根据第一段中“He was fascinated by the magnificence of the wilderness he saw. In the distance the Yellowstone River came crashing down a huge waterfall into a basin of sky blue. Below him lay enormous valley walls, violently carved out of the cream-yellow stone. (他被他所看到的荒野的壮丽景色迷住了。远处的黄石河从巨大的瀑布上奔腾而下,汇入天蓝色的盆地。他脚下是巨大的峡谷壁,仿佛被暴力雕刻在乳黄色的岩石上。)”可知,第一段的描述聚焦Moran在黄石地区所看到的震撼景色,旨在展现这里风景的壮丽非凡。故选C项。
【53题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“By reworking drawings made by members of Langford’s journey and using his own imagination, Moran drew a fantastic world of erupting geysers (喷涌的间歇泉) and other splendid views. (通过重新加工Langford的旅行成员绘制的图纸,并运用自己的想象力,Moran画出了一个奇妙的世界,里面有喷发的间歇泉和其他壮丽的景色)”可推知,Moran在亲眼见到间歇泉之前就把它们画了出来。故选D项。
【54题详解】
词句猜测题。根据下文“One article, written by explorer Nathaniel Langford, described a mysterious region in the West called Yellowstone as “the place where hell bubbled up.” By reworking drawings made by members of Langford’s journey and using his own imagination, Moran drew a fantastic world of erupting geysers (喷涌的间歇泉) and other splendid views.
通读全文,尤其是第二段中“The work he created as a result of this trip would introduce thousands of Americans to the glorious landscape of their own country — and help to establish Yellowstone as the first national park in the US. (他在这次旅行中创作的作品将向成千上万的美国人介绍他们自己国家的壮丽景观,并帮助黄石公园成为美国第一个国家公园。)”可知,文章的中心是19世纪艺术家Thomas Moran,聚焦他通过艺术创作向美国人展示黄石的壮丽,并推动其成为美国首个国家公园,并补充其出生背景、早期艺术经历等信息。因此,A项“将黄石带给我们的那个人”凸显了Moran及其画作的重要意义,最适合作为文章标题。故选A项。

Ⅲ. Reading Comprehension (35’)
Section A (15’)
Directions: For each blank in the following passage there are four words or phrases marked A, B, C and D. Fill in each blank with the word or phrase that best fits the context.
Once upon a time, much of the world was populated by wolves. They ranged all over the United States and Canada, Siberia and much of mainland Europe, as well as Great Britain, and if humans hadn’t come along, they would still be there ____31____.
Remember the time when Little Red Riding Hood thinks that a wolf is her grandmother? “What big teeth you’ve got, Grandmother?” she says, and the wolf, disguised (伪装) as her grandmother, shouts back, “All the better to eat you with, my dear!”
If you really want to see how English-speaking humans think of the wolf, just look at the ____35____! “A wolf in sheep’s clothing” is not a pleasant person and a “wolf-whistle” is not a pleasant sound!
Yet wolves are totally unlike the image we have of them from legend and language. For a start, they don’t ____36____ humans; indeed, they do their best to keep out of our way. They are very sociable animals, living in packs and looking after their young with a fondness that should make some humans ____37____ themselves. Far from wolf music being ____38____, the howl of the wolf — the cry of the whole pack — as the full moon rises in a star-bright sky, is one of the most beautiful sounds in nature. They are beautiful creatures which can run at speeds of up to 65 kph if they have to. They can jump up and run up rock faces like a cat. And when they do ____39____, their 42 large teeth are fearsomely effective.
But the ____40____ remains that we love the lion, the king of the jungle, while we demonize (妖魔化) the wolf, one of the most beautiful animals in the world.
Perhaps that’s why, in the end, we ____45____ the wolf so much — for having something we can never get our hands on.

Section B (20’)

(A)
It Tastes Just Like Chicken

B. He went to an art school to train as an artist.

54. The word “illustrating” in the last paragraph is closest in meaning to “________”.
A. giving examples to B. supplying pictures for
C. explaining the themes of D. writing introductions to
55. What is the best title of the passage?
